  • This week I review the super High Tech virtual camera wing mirrors on the Audi e-Tron.
    Are they better than standard mirrors?
    Should you spec them?
    Are they just a gimmick?

    I generally agree that the camera-„mirrors“ are not yet there with regards to ease of use. Two points I wanted to add:
    1) There is a clear advantage of this technology in heavy rain or when entering a humid tunnel: you always have a perfect view to the back even when the window is not transparent anymore
    2) I didnt even notice they are foldable as this does not make sense even in the thightest spots. If you look at the silhouette of the car you can see that the virtual mirrors only stand out very minimal, so nobody would want to manouvre the car into such a thight space where the folding would bring an advantage. So electric folding would be a complete waste.
    Many thanks an keep up the videos👍🏻

    As regards the blind spots, the yellow line warning is there anyway. This is also seen in regular cars that have a blinker that warns you. Overall, i think it's the same in terms of field of view, however, the camera wins in the aesthetic department.
    It's going to improve definitely

    I personally think it has better view than standard mirror. But it’s just my opinion.

    I agree that the screens are in the wrong place, but the field of view of the cameras seems far superior to the average mirror.
    I would have expected the screens to be in the same location as normal just moved inside the car.

    I was already thinking it before you mentioned it in the video, I believe it's an accident waiting to happen, having to look down inside the vehicle and not out of the window to get a rear view is a terrible idea. We might not be aware of it but our peripheral vision is taking in a lot of information when we're looking out the side windows at normal mirrors, this clearly will not happen when we're looking down inside the vehicle.

    Seem a bit of a gimmick at the moment. I'm sure technology will come along though that will make them better than a wing mirror. At the moment they don't seem like they do anything different enough to warrant the complexity.

    Watching without volume so bare with. (1) The cams with the two indoor screens were purchased with this vehicle or purchased separately from the vehicle? (2) if purchased separately what is the link for the purchase and the pricing? (3) also if purchased separately what are the steps for getting the screens to stay in place of the vehicle? (4) Also where are the slots for memory cards so that the road trip can be watched and re watched (5) Also is there an app that comes with this product that allows you to automatically store footage to a cloud based memory? *Thanks*

    Great review. I’ve just ordered an E-Tron where the virtual mirrors come as standard. They can be unspec’d but you don’t get the £1,200 back! On the basis they aren’t going to cost anything in your experience would you say they’re worth keeping?

    • @SteveJulien

      Thanks.
      Yes in that case.
      After 1,000 miles with them, I liked them more.
      They’re not perfect but if included in the price, I’d have them.
      The car is super quiet so you may also lose a bit of that with normal mirrors.

      @@karimshepherd6454 the screen shoudl adjust match brightnes of driving enviroment, otherwise tis a eyestrain to often switch focus from dark to light and light to dark, a more extreme example of this turning on the light in middle of night after long time of being in darkness. does the display protect against glaring bright lights like a high beam headlight, sunlight during sunrise or sunset, etc?

    I had a courtesy etron with these on for a couple of days. Same as you, thought the screens were too small. The resolution and depth of field was weird. Cars looked far away through the mirrors, but looking at the same car in the rear view mirror they were close.
    I did prefer the position of the screens to normal door mirrors. Felt safer personally looking slightly down and right with your eyes only than looking all the way right with a head movement.
    Really wanted to love them but...meh. Nice review Steve.

  • @budimpla
    @budimpla 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's no use and even dangerous, because, as you say in the video, it takes your eyes off the windshield plan.

  • @PeteSimpson
    @PeteSimpson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When an issue happens with those mirrors, *maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan* that's going to cost an arm and a leg to fix or get right again.

    • @donvanvliet9477
      @donvanvliet9477 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily, you would need to replace all the bits of both mirrors, just the bit that has broken. Font forget most of the technology is inboard, just some relatively cheap cams on the exterior.

  • @ebb3162
    @ebb3162 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very good point. Not gaining much benefit and not good enough honestly. My expectation for this new technology is that this should be equivalent to have a passenger sitting next to you and gives you green light to change lane. i.e. zero blind spot and better distance judgement. I won't buy this technology unless a more innovative one coming

    • @donvanvliet9477
      @donvanvliet9477 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But itt DOES give you an amber light when lane changing, and also gives an amber 'blind spot' warning even when in staying in your lane. Also, they inform the electric door locks which will stop you opening your door into the path of a cyclist or passing car.

    Steve, I think the mirror cam can be a good thing, but compared to the Mercedes Mirror Cam on the HGVs, I don't think the Audi appears as good.
    As I think the positions of the screen is the wrong place... On the Mercedes, I think the screen is the ideal place, where you can look out of both front and side widow. Rather than looking down at the door..
