  • In May 2024, Vietnam has already entered summer. Insider sources reveal that Vietnamese officials have asked Apple's supplier Foxconn to voluntarily reduce the electricity consumption of its six assembly plants in northern Vietnam by 30%. This is a precautionary measure after Foxconn experienced production halts due to power outages last year.
In April, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited Vietnam and emphasized the importance of Vietnam's role in Apple's supply chain. Foxconn's factories in Vietnam assemble Mac computers and iPads. With iPhone sales declining significantly, Apple's revenue now heavily relies on computers and tablets. However, the risk of power shortages at this critical moment could severely impact Apple's supply capabilities.
Looking back to last summer, Vietnam experienced its most severe power shortage in history. Cities couldn't afford to run air conditioners, and rural areas were plunged into darkness at night. The main cause of the power shortage was a sharp increase in electricity demand. Most regions in Vietnam are located in the tropics where high temperatures are common, but last year's extreme heat was particularly intense. By June, Vietnam's power system could not keep up with demand, and power cuts were implemented to ensure basic needs.
Reports indicate that at the time, the Vietnamese power company required Foxconn to suspend production from dusk until midnight for 20 days, allowing production to resume from midnight to dawn. Although Foxconn managed to maintain normal operations, it was not operating at full capacity for a long period. Including factories from Samsung, Canon, Luxshare, and others, the World Bank estimated that power outages in northern Vietnam caused approximately $1.4 billion in losses last year, equivalent to 0.3% of Vietnam's GDP.

There is no electricity shortage in Vietnam, just a sudden weather change in northern Vietnam. In southern and central Vietnam, there is excess electricity. Vietnam buys Chinese electricity because of reasonable economic calculations rather than because of shortage. Vietnam can buy electricity in one place but can sell electricity in another place, that is an economic calculation, not a shortage.

Energy is fundamental to industrial growth. While getting energy from China via its grid, Vietnam should seek energy independence. Like China, nuclear is the future and Vietnam should work with China to develop its own nuclear power fleet. The same holds true for all ASEAN countries if they want their economies to grow.

The Vietnamese government lacks long-term planning to solve the power problem and hesitates to build a new power plant. As a communist country, the construction of power plants in China is efficient and rapid; Vietnam, on the other hand, is even difficult to start work, often dragging its feet.
Both officials and technicians in Vietnam lack decision. Because each scheme must have its own shortcomings, but the real problem is the lack of electricity, so must choose one, and the delay will only lead to greater losses.
For example, Vietnam's nuclear power, before and after more than ten years, has neither completely given up nor seen the continuation, and finally lost a lot of time in empty talk.

Well, Vietnam has the US to help it, no?

@@bemmychan1518 Yes if it wants to be a colony of the US, like the Philippines is currently doing. So far, it chooses not to. It fought the US and won and to be a colony again, makes it look like it lost. Normally the US talks a lot about aid, but most of that aid is military to conquer Russia and China. Short term, it can get power from China's west where power is abundant and population is relatively low. Long term, Vietnam needs to be self sufficient and for that it needs a lot of capital. Solar and wind are small incremental gains, but what it needs is nuclear and that is possible with either Russia or China. As fourth gen reactors mature, costs will drop so Vietnam needs to be patient a little longer when the world is past its recession and then it can look at its future.

Interesting development> China should then retain her development of Thorium plants within China thus keeping that technology within her control but sell her electricity through the power grids to all her neighbors. This can ensure long term revenues.

Fresh water, food security following electricity are crucially essential to surviving. China is strategically smart to keep developing electricity to keeping up the manufacturing and supply chains center in China. The next 5 years for China to development, modernization to strengthening all around China is essentially building s stronger foundation; going forward!

I am Vietnamese, and I don't understand what you all are talking about. The amount of imported electricity in Vietnam hasn't even reached 4% of the total electricity supply. The news about Vietnam lacking electricity actually only occurs in the North. And even if there are power outages, they don't happen as frequently as mentioned in the video; they only occur during unusually hot weather when the water levels in hydropower reservoirs are low. The South of Vietnam has switched to renewable energy and has a surplus of electricity to supply to the North, but our current problem is that the existing power grid can no longer handle the load to transfer electricity to the North. We are trying to build new power grids to reduce the load on the old grid. We don't need help from a scheming and calculating country like China, so stop spreading false rumors to tarnish our country.
I think this channel is a China propaganda channel, there is no accurate information. It's a news channel, yet it uses AI-generated voices and pieces together unrelated images in a sloppy manner. A quick glance is enough to see this clearly.
