Fun Fact: 32 Bits Mario is the one that SM64 uses if Mario is far away from the camera, he is used to render more stuff if the camera is on a locked place, like the top of Big Bomb Omb's mountain.
tbh it's jarring and i wish they hadn't bothered considering there are much lower hanging fruit to optimize. I think this game is proof to never do LoD on 'hero' characters.

@@dtoadq the game came out in '97, 3D tech was borderline brand new, i don't think they even had time to LEARN to optimize it to the extent we have now..
@@The_Lightning_Sparks ; Eh, I mean you're not wrong, but since Nintendo helped make the hardware, they really should have had guidelines/best-practices for the hardware distributed to the programmers. Stuff like keep memory small and cache coherent. But I think you're right in that a lot of the programmers they pulled in probably had to learn a lot about graphics techniques and 3D rasterization while on a tight deadline. I'd like to think they had consultants from SGI who were professional graphics programmers and knew how to leverage the hardware.
I think ultimately it was more of an issue of time/deadlines, which there were better things to spend time optimizing than a LOD hero. That's why the game is compiled with "-g -O0" rather than "-O2", just simple but egregious oversight from pressure of a deadline.
