And this is why I love your videos! I have been using Cakewalk products since the 80's, so that's a long time! I decided to watch all your Cakewalk videos, even if I thought there was nothing I didn't know in a particular episode. So I'm watching MIDI basics. I get up to the part where you have the little velocity screen at the bottom, and I'm thinking, "Wait, what? you can do that?" 40 years of working with this, and I never knew! I'm laughing and shaking my head at myself, and I just had to say thanks!!!
I have been using Cakewalk for years. I think so far you are the best at explaining working in the DAW world. Keep up the awesome work it is greatly appreciated.
oh my god i was at the point of a breakdown when none of the previous softwares i used always ran into some problems, i love this software so much, no delay, no distortion and so simple
Hi Mike, I've been using Sonar since 2009 to record my music and run midi on my single cover gigs. My old Dell that I've been using finally died a couple days ago. I'm buying a new laptop tomorrow and I plan on downloading Cakewalk by Bandlab as soon as I get it home. A couple of years ago I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and was unable to run Sonar on it. I'm so happy that this Cakewalk software is free because from what I can tell it's pretty much the same as what I bought and can no longer use. I'm going to subscribe as soon as I'm done writing this. Great tutorials Mike!
I am very into your teaching thank you! I was watching you play in the piano and started trying to figure out how you are playing the bass line on your right hand and the melody on your left and suddenly realized you must be recording in a mirrored mode or something. LOl, thanks and keep ‘‘em coming!
Mike I have been using CW for maybe 20 years and have only really learnt the basics. Wish you were around then Sir, but great that you are here now and make it all so logical, excellent
I agree with all the positive comments. You are a great teacher and I find myself moving right along with you easily as you are teaching without falling asleep or getting irritated as I do with most others. Please keep doing what you do, I have already learned a ton from you in such a short time. I can't thank you enough!
Hi Mike, I just want to THANK YOU SO MUCH for these tutorials. Your videos taught me how to use cakewalk. I attribute 100% credit to you of the sound quality of the piano on my channel. When I first looked at Cakewalk I thought there was NO WAY I could learn how to use it, but you spoon fed everything I needed to know and made it so easy! Such excellent tutorials like yours exist no where else on TH-cam! Some of these videos I have literally watched from start to finish 10 times!
Thank you!!! I been using Bandlab on my android, and just got a new computer, I'm trying out the cakewalk today, and this is VERY helpful. Thanks alot!!!
Thank you. A couple things here just unlocked my process an important step. On a random note, I can't recommend enough having a trackball mouse on your non-dominant hand side so you can work two handed.
Thank you sooooooooo much for explaining all this stuff in plain simple English with the calmness of a very patient teacher! I have had so many "YEsssss!" moments watching your videos, you wouldn't believe it! Thank you once again! :oD
Superb... I chose you as my Cakewalk teacher, and am leavig the first lesson (a little before the end), knowing so much that I could teach someone. Cool... Thanks
Hi there. Thank you so much for these cakewalk tutorials. I’m 50+ and have been writing music as long as I can remember but with pen and paper and more recently Sibelius. I have just started with Cakewalk to create orchestral music before Christmas, and although I am reasonably tech savvy I find some of the basics quite confusing. Your video is really helped so I’m going to head off and work my way through the rest of your Cakewalk collection.
was searching for solid two days to find something to get started on cakewalk and this is actually the first video i find hepful ...thanks for that !!!
Hahaha, if you dislike the video click the thumbs down twice, that cracked me up! Funny story about getting here: When tidiying up my media, i came across a very old diskette containing Cakewalk Apprentice, which came as a freebie with a sound card. I thought:"How is Cakewalk doing today?" and stumbled upon Bandlab offering a free download after registering. I used to make quite a few MIDI tracks with Cakewalk in the nineties, dealing with the quirky MIDI mapping of my Yamaha Portasound PSS 780, and Cakewalk served me well setting that up, including Yamaha specific Sysex messages. So after the first install I wondered if the MIDI section of Cakewalk by Bandlab would be just as easy as it used to, some odd 25 years ago. You explained it very well, and your video gave me confidence in setting up my MIDI again. Thanks a million!
Just wanted to say thanks to how you presented this video. Watched a few others where the instructor flew through things and I was left scratching my head at the end. Trying to learn cakewalk now that my daughter is really interested in making her own music and want to get her off to a great start in her young carrier. Thanks again...
Gosh what an enthralling demo! I used to work with the OLD version of Cakewalk many years ago, in association with Hauptwerk - so I could write organ music. But since upgraded my PC and now got 64bit system with 64GigRam and found that Cakewalk has gone. I find other music software for too complicated. So I am very pleased to discover that Cakewalk is back but in a much more modern form - although it is recognisable!
My first glance at the Cakewalk interface left me wondering where to start; might as well have been looking at an instrument panel in an airliner cockpit. Your Midi Basics got me up and running pronto. Thanks for the video! You are a good educator and your video production is excellent/professional. I'm looking forward to watching and following. This is not my first Cakewalk. Just pulled my 7/31/1992 Sweetwater Sound invoice for $349 Cakewalk Professional for Windows 1.0 along with a Roland A-80 keyboard and SC-155 Sound Canvas GS. The gear has been sitting unused for about 20 years. It's cool how after 27 years all it took was a $15 Midi USB Interface (replaced the $70 CMS-401 Midi Interface) to get it hooked up again. What's really bizarre is Cakewalk by BandLab is free. The amount of intellectual property included and hours invested in developing, testing and perfecting the code is almost incomprehensible.
Thank you so much for leaving such an inspiring comment. Inspiring for me that is! It's really helpful to know I may be on the right track, as I still regard myself as a noob to this. Knowing that people will be able to get over the technical aspects, and make some music is a massive reward for me. Thank YOU!

I agree, when I first downloaded Cakewalk for free I thought it must have been an error that worked for my benefit, and I was waiting for the trial period to end, or to learn what major functionality was lacking. I still can't believe this richly featured DAW is free. The icing on the cake is these tutorials. They are just the right level to keep me challenged but not overwhelmed.
These videos you've put together are phenomenal! I've never quite figured out how to utilize midi in cakewalk before and you just shot me into it in 25 minutes. Thank you so much, you are an amazing instructor.
I don't know if i am happy or upset with your tutorials. I recorded an album of original stuff as demos for the band as we cant play due to lockdown in cubase. Played all the instruments myself and was fairly happy. But then i stumbled onto your channel downloaded your tutorials did my next song in cakewalk after watching your stuff. Massive improvement. Now i feel i need to record them all again lol. Brilliant teacher and so simple. Thanks a lot. At least i have some lockdown time to keep learning and having a go with virtual instruments cheers.
Mike, I hope you are well. This midi with cakewalk editing is what make cakewalk so special. Thanks for all your time. Under present situation more time isolated more time to digest what your teach. Thanks again.
Yet another spot on "how to" by Mike. I will be using his tutorials for years to come, I am sure. I am only a semi-pro musician at this point (don't mention the "r" word LOL). I work at a self-employed gig and play in usually 2 or 3 local groups. So I only get to play audio engineer sporadically. Mike's videos have proved invaluable in not only teaching me new stuff, but also providing quick review on things that I may have forgotten.
What an excellent tutorial! I am amazed by your no-hassle presentation, and surprised by Bandlab's free offering of this sophisticated tool. Thank you and Bandlab!
One big thing to remember regarding "Sound on Sound" recording mode (17:00). It also records your sustain pedal, every time. So performing a second recording pass ("sound on sound"), if you use the sustain pedal it will be recorded and added to the track. This results in the track having TWO sustain pedal recordings stacked one on the other, creating a mess and ruining the initial recording.
This is a great refresher course, especially for someone who last recorded anything using pro-24 or cubase on the atari. Just started recording things again this year. This has helped me out a lot. A lot of things came flooding back to me, once I began to get into this video. You make a great teacher Thanks a lot for making this series
Thanks- this video helped me get started with my MPKmini play. Cakewalk recognized both the keys and pads and it records great. It also helped me find the TH3 guitar amp in the plugin folder, for audio tracks- very helpful.
Good video. I used to hate working in the Piano Roll in Sonar but they made it more easy to use and then when they added the dark background in Cakewalk it became a pleasure to use. The only thing I haven't got quite the hang of yet is the paintbrush tool which is one of the best of the last features they introduced.
You make great tutorials, easy to undersand, i learned a lot from them. Thank You! Just a quick note: You might know by now, but you don't have to open the metronome settings to turn on or off during playback or recording. There are two buttons above the metronome icon (triangle-playback, circle- recording) to switch it off (orange-On, black-Off on your color settings)
Hi, I did know, but I must admit not until recently *blush* - seems silly really, I must have gotten used to doing it the hard way years ago, and never noticed the interface! Thanks for sharing :)
13:46 you saved my life. I was looking for that information about 2 month and accidentally I found this video. you have a new suscriber. great tutorial!!!
This video and your "Getting Started" video made me so incredibly happy, thank you! Fantastic tutorials that helped me keep my calm and not throw everything in the bin after spending a lot of time installing the programs and setting up my instruments, but the midi recording not producing any sound. I didn't understand how to assign an instrument (e.g. sound of a piano) to them. I'm competely new to recording/DAWs but after these two video I feel like I understood most of what I need to get started and to actually produce something good! I'm definitely going to stick around your channel and check on your other videos, thank you so very much! Edit: I was able to close so many tabs in my browser, desperately googling what I'm doing wrong. And your video made it all so easy. Wow, I'm so happy right now :D
Hm... Nope, just look up "How to use cakewalk for beginners", you should get a video that shows how the basic stuff works. Towards the end of the video the guy draws notes on a piano roll, so you don't need a controller.
So because of you I have just brought a high end PC and downloaded CAke Walk your advice is proving to be priceless. Thank you buddy for doing these videos. Oh and nw I have started saying reverb differently, can't remember what i used to say but now its both ways :)
just started using cakewalk earlier, subbed so i can find these videos later. that piano roll snap function had me stumped earlier so glad you covered it.
I've always wondered why people always talk about how CPU intensive DAW's are and now I know it's because they store the midi information not the instrument sound. 10 midi instruments means loading 10 VSTs plugins to play every time. Simple really. I am really looking forward to viewing more of your videos as the MPC essentials s/w is terrible and unfriendly and their tutorials even worse. Now with your help I will install and enjoy Cakewalk
I take my hat off to you sir... You really do explain things in such a product friendly way that even I believe, it"s about time you get on to Bandlab"s payroll... if you"re not yet. Your efforts much appreciated.
Thank you. Best source for Cakewalk information. I'm hoping you'll do one about mapping samples to a drum pad and how to set the knobs. There are no videos for this in terms of Cakewalk..
You have saved me! :) Had just got into recording with Audacity and thought I should get a midi keyboard but soon realised my DAW didn't support it so went on the search for a new DAW. After a few google searches I found cakewalk and was struggling to see how I was ever going to be able to work it! Thankfully your video was just what I needed and I'm sure I will be binge watching them in the coming days! thank you so much!! :)
Perfect....loved it so much I hit the like button THREE times!! :) I have Studio One Professional (I am a newbie though) and I am amazed how close Cakewalk is to Studio One so far....thanks for your great work.
This was beautiful and far more helpful than anything I've attempted to use thus far! Liked, Subbed, and the bell shall ring anytime a new vid blesses the internet lol Thanks again mate!
There are some really great tutorials (I'm new to DAW, MIDI, and Cakewalk) out there, but I've got to say, as a teacher, this was my favourite so far. Perfect pacing for me, rich and helpful content, and delightful presentation. I feel the cloud of mystery that is MIDI being lifted. Liked (twice ;-) ) and subscribed. Thank you for your efforts!
Thanks for the MIDI review. I believe a used the Cakewalk TTS-1 twenty or so years ago. I look forward to learning from your other videos. Stay groovy!
July 2020. My first foray into the world of MIDI! My Cakewalk is 2020-04. I installed the AIR MiniGrand to \cakewalk\vstpluginsVST; link to the VST that came with my Keyboard, an M-Audio Keystation 61 Mk3 is below. I really like the feel of the keys; not too light and not too heavy! The keys make very little sound, and no annoying clickety clacks. I carefully read reviews of various keyboards in the $200 (USA) range and chose this one; I'm so relieved it is really satisfactory! At first it failed to do anything; a tech from M-Audio finally had me uninstall McAfee anti-virus, and then the MIDI functioned! Isn't that weird! I'm SO GLAD I went with a 61 Key board and not a 49. I just love the sound of the octave starting from C2, the lowest key on this 61 keyboard. Mike, By the way I just checked my Cakewalk 2020.05, Build 039, 64 Bit. To add a VST, I have to click on Insert, then click on Soft Synth, and that is where all the Plugins are on this version. Or I can click on the icon that looks like a microphone, where the plugins are, and double click on one and that creates a track for that VST. Right now I plan to mostly use it to learn piano on FLOWKEY. So far the program has been excellent. The so called Mini Grand which came free with the Keystation 61 though, sounds anything but grand! Maybe there are reverb and more detailed settings I'm yet to discover. Maybe I'm doing something wrong; on the website it really does sound very nice, link below. I will experiment. www.airmusictech.com/product/mini-grand#.Xv51Rl-Sm00
Thank you for this video and the Getting Started video. Cakewalk is overwhelming at first. It has quite the learning curve due to the many features for a free DAW. Your basic explanation makes it less intimidating.
Such a wonderful tutorial. Clear and concise. Subscribing so I can get to your content faster. Lord knows I need some guidance getting through this DAW. Just downloaded today. Took a while to install; I already had a bunch of plugins for Bandlab to scan. Now I'm about ready to begin. Thanks for your precise instruction.

But it was driving me nuts to cut and paste midi information from several midi files and it wouldn't snap correctly making it sound off when the pasted sections were played. But the SNAP and QUANTIZE just made my day! Thanks!
I'm not musical at all but want to try and do "background noise/music" to videos I create. I've just ordered a mini controller (Arturia MiniLab MkII) for fun. Installed Cakewalk yesterday. Thanks- this video helped me get started with my MPKmini play. Cakewalk recognized both the keys and pads and it records great. It also helped me find the TH3 guitar amp in the plugin folder, for audio tracks- very helpful.
Good stuff John! Thanks for watching :)
Good video. I used to hate working in the Piano Roll in Sonar but they made it more easy to use and then when they added the dark background in Cakewalk it became a pleasure to use. The only thing I haven't got quite the hang of yet is the paintbrush tool which is one of the best of the last features they introduced.
Hey Steve- hop you are wll. I'll try to do a more in depth video soon.
Genuinely helpful. Probably the best "how to use program" video I've watched
I learn something new things from all of your videos, thank you so much!
I'm a total beginner and I wasn't even sure which DAW to chose. I ended up with Cakewalk. You know why? Because of your tutorials!
What you get from Cakewalk considering it's totally free is amazing. Mike is an invaluable part of my cakewalk education for sure!
Just installed Cakewalk and your videos will be a blessing, thank you.
Hi, I just want to say thanks for making your tutorial so understanding.
For once , feel like im getting somewhere now .
13:46 you saved my life. I was looking for that information about 2 month and accidentally I found this video. you have a new suscriber. great tutorial!!!
Great explanation and demonstration. Better than using the help menu in the cakewalk by band lab..
Bought a midi controller last night, and watching this is making me rather excited to when it'll arrive.
Do u need a midi controller to use this daw?
Hm... Nope, just look up "How to use cakewalk for beginners", you should get a video that shows how the basic stuff works. Towards the end of the video the guy draws notes on a piano roll, so you don't need a controller.
Ahh okay thanks bro
What a great video, pretty informative, precise and clear. What a great teacher you are, blessed to learn from you!💯
So because of you I have just brought a high end PC and downloaded CAke Walk your advice is proving to be priceless. Thank you buddy for doing these videos. Oh and nw I have started saying reverb differently, can't remember what i used to say but now its both ways :)
I say it wrong! But when I do get things wrong, I like them to be insignificant:) Congratulations on starting a great journey!
this tutorial saved me so much time and frustration, loving your videos!
just started using cakewalk earlier, subbed so i can find these videos later. that piano roll snap function had me stumped earlier so glad you covered it.
very detailed oriented & very thorough...couldn't leave without subscribing. great job
Selecting the keyboard as virtual controler fixed the issues I was having with recording, thank you and great job!
Hi Jon - thank you so much for watching, I hope I can bring you many more helpful videos in 2020 :)
Hi Mike, thank you very much for all your Cakewalk videos ! It's the first time I really understandn what is midi !
I tried many Cakewalk's tutorial but the yours is the best! Thanks!
Great vid again. Fantastic teacher and very nice to have the software for free. Yippee !
Hey man - just want to thank you for doing these cakewalk videos, I'm learning so much!
Thank you, that's great to hear. More coming!
Indeed, I am a total newbie and want to begin making some productions
I absolutely love your videos. I'm new to home recording and the way explain things make it easy to follow.
I hate tutorial videos and I'm a bad listener. However, this is easy to listen to for me. I like.
Lol. Awesome Brian :)
Perfect....loved it so much I hit the like button THREE times!! :) I have Studio One Professional (I am a newbie though) and I am amazed how close Cakewalk is to Studio One so far....thanks for your great work.
Thank you for watching :)
you are awesome. I haven't thanked you for all of your videos I have watched yet.
This video was not like others it was actually really helpful thank you 🙏🏻
I love this! I did not know that right arrow drag selection... And I was struggling to choose selective notes... Hash. Thanks sir
Hi thanks a million! you made things so much clearer for me. I really enjoy your clear style of teaching.
one of the best tutorials out there, you're a great teacher! much appreciated!
thankyou so much I tried to do it myself and hit a brick wall and this got me up to speed on the basics thanks man! Cheers!
This was beautiful and far more helpful than anything I've attempted to use thus far!
Liked, Subbed, and the bell shall ring anytime a new vid blesses the internet lol
Thanks again mate!
Great information! I write in midi a lot and the quantizing shortcut 'Q', is something that I've never used before... I will now!! Thank you! -Steve
Fantastic series of videos and just what I need. Thank you
Thank you Chris. There is more coming!

Thank you for this video and the Getting Started video. Cakewalk is overwhelming at first. It has quite the learning curve due to the many features for a free DAW. Your basic explanation makes it less intimidating.
That's great to hear Dax - thank you!
Thank you so much. You're a great teacher ! !
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH MAN! THIS WAS THE MOST HELPFUL VIDEO OF ALL!💛😁
And also another midi tutorials too. Thanks for this video. Im new to cakewalk. :)
Always nice and clean thank you
Wow, very informative man! Thank you for starting my cakewalk journey with me!
Very comprehensive video, thank you! :)
best daw ever and its free,it does everything yes im looking at you reaper
Haha - glad you are happy :)
Good job! :) Im using Cakewalk since 1997. so I don't need tutorial but I guess many people need it to learn first steps. Regards :)
Thank you!
I watched your video here once already. I thought you had made mention of how to select one note out of a triad and adjust the velocity like you did with a single note in the video. Time stamp (16:14) Thanks!
Excellent yet again mike, i am loving these cakewalk vids!!!! Well done mate
Chears Glyn. There are many more to come!
Phenomenal channel, can't thank you enough
Great tutorial, lots of great info. Many thanks.
I triple-clicked 'Like'.
That was so clear, thank you!
Thank you for making this. I hope you are doing well.
Great video!!! I am fairly new in the music stuff. Just bought a AKAI MPK249 controller. But it was driving me nuts to cut and paste midi information from several midi files and it wouldn't snap correctly making it sound off when the pasted sections were played. But the SNAP and QUANTIZE just made my day! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this... I've been trying to find a way to do this for months!!!
Awesome, so glad it helped!
You’re a gentleman and a scholar, dude.
Very nice video! Super clear and informative. Definitely coming back to this tutorial after trying some stuff out
I'm not musical at all but want to try and do "background noise/music" to videos I create. I've just ordered a mini controller (Arturia MiniLab MkII) for fun. Installed Cakewalk yesterday. With that tiny knowledge (or rather BIG lack of😁) I started watching this channel...
...and I understand what you're on about!
That is some seriously high grades on your ability to teach 👌👌👌Subbed for sure, you will be my main guide from now. Big thanks from Sweden!
