I am a long time Cakewalk user (Guitar Studio>Guitar Tracks>Sonar>CbB). I have watched every video on Creative Sauce pertaining to CbB, and there is still SO MUCH TO LEARN. I love Mike's simplified approach to make you understand. I have used MIDI in other versions but continue to learn. A+++, Thank you for these videos. I even bought a tshirt as I love this content and wish to see more!
I didn't know jack about cakewalk actually, so you're my recent Lord and savior of cakewalk! You're awesome! I would be lost without you and give up entirely. I'm a vocalist and lyricist who can't read music nor play instruments, not a musician at all, just got an acoustic guitar, piano, bass and synth, as well as a moog to learn to play and get this song out already! So this is amazing! Keep up the great work! I've had a song stuck in my head just tormenting me for the past 6 years! I've told people about you on tiktok, so you should have some young kid fans on here following you real soon. God bless!
Your videos have been very helpful. Last year I got a laptop computer. And during this past Christmas season I bought a laptop performance keyboard. I downloaded Cakewalk. And watching your videos have help me navigate my way through this music studio software. I presently don't have any questions. You've done a good job explaining using MIDI. I presently don't have a microphone. My apartment is small, so don't have a lot of space to put extra equipment. Thank you for your help🎹🎵🎹🎵🎹🎵🎹🎵
I love learning about how to use MIDI. I know I'm ALWAYS going to learn something I need to know whenever I am alerted that Creative Sauce has published a new Cakewalk by BandLab video.
Why did I spend so much time clicking around and trying in Cakewalk instead of watching these 25 minutes and learning so much? 😅 Really a great guide, thanks a lot!
I MADE IT THIS FAR! 😁 Wonderful, wonderful video. I've been fiddling with stuff the hard way for years, now I know a much easier and faster way. THANK YOU!
Thank you Mike! I'm a 62 year old with very little experience of digital recording and who only started making my own music back in March to occupy my time during lock down here in he UK. I have used your tutorials to familiarise myself with this DAW. While I had discovered some of the issues covered in this video myself; specifically creating expression curves for Spitfire Audios Discovery Orchestral Strings, I did not know about using the track pane. I had accidentally discovered having muiitple instruments viewed in the piano roll but didn't know how to lock to a specific instrument let alone be able to group them into specific views. That's gonna prove really handy. Although I prefer point and click menu driven choices I also appreciate the inclusion of shortcut keys where appropriate. I know there willl be others who use them extensively.
Hi Mike, I hope you've sorted out your PC issues. I made it to the end, but there were so many great tips, I need to watch it again, possibly a few times. Keep up the great work!
14:34 Left-click-drag through the velocity bars. T for Tool pallet. Long press Edit button and select a tool. 15:11 Sustain pedal. Click '+' in bottom left. 15:41 Transform tool. Can change the velocity values uniformly. 16:35 Long press Transform > Soft Mode. 17:36 Long press Transform > Auto Focus
Wow! another great video. A lot of content there, I think I will have to watch it a few more times to get it all to sink in. Those short cuts are really useful and the track pane is a feature that has always been hidden on my set up, mainly because I wasn't aware it was there! I'm off to start working on some midi tracks! Thanks Mike.
I'm new to CbB, though having watched many of your videos I'm getting more familiar every day. This one, that I watched until the end, was very helpful as always.
Have you been watching over my shoulder!? This video addressed a lot of issues I have come across lately since I started getting into cinematic/trailer composition! I can't thank you enough for addressing this!
I used to be a Cakewalk Sonar user up until it was shut down, I felt a bit angry as I had paid renewal of 2 years updates upfront, so I was not happy with their previous owners. Since Bandlab resurrected the program, I have always had it installed on the computer but not used it, but that is about to change. This video and others are a very useful refresher course to help me back into those things I had forgotten.
Really enjoined this tutorial Mike. I am new to DAWS and drum have baffleed me up to now. Also liked your inclusion of shortcut keys. Yes, I made it all the way to the end.
I made it to the end and this was VERY helpful in unlocking a bunch of goodies I knew were there but never took the time to figure it out. In fact the track pane has baffled me for a long time because I didn't realize that where on the pane I clicked made a difference. The long hold feature was also completely unknown by me till this video. THANKS!
Very helpful video on simplifying the workflow on Cakewalk - so many tools at hand that I overlooked for so long due to an "intuitive" approach. Thanks for this, Mike!
Thanks Mike! I've been using audio tracks for over 12 months but now just getting started with midi - thanks for the useful information - very easy to understand.
This video is gold! I cant believe all this stuff is possible with the midi. Iv'e been using cake walk for ages and 2 days ago I couldn't even figure out how to make the drums record lol (I always make the beat in other software then export as .wav into cakewalk) I figured out how to use the SI drumkit by watching Your other video. now I have been scratching my head about how to make the drum beat less robotic. This video gives a world of options that I never knew about! nice one
I made it this far. There are many great shortcuts in Cakewalk. I use Ctrl + Page Up/Page Down often. Ctrl +Page Down jumps to the next bar, Ctrl + Page Up to the previous bar. It's very handy while I'm editing.
Of course I made it this far! This video was filled to the brim with exciting new information. All the key shortcuts, for example, and finally somebody explained the transform tool to me in an understandable way (I was already assuming Cakewalk wouldn't have the compress/expand function, other midi editors have). Thank you once again for a fantastic source of information, you've created. And if you consider to someday go into detail about setting up the workspace in a reliable way (some details always turn back to default, when I start Cakewalk, like track meters, or the right pane going back to docked to the right in the docker, not to the right of the window), you'll be loved in abundance!
Fantastic stuff. I have been using Cakewalk for over 10 years but you have introduced me to lots of new ways of using midi. I often use Groove Clip Looping for copying bars. I will do a basic bar of drums convert it to a Groove Clip and drag it out for the duration of the track. It is easy to chop it up later into separate clips and add fills and variations.
Great teaching Mike! I'm migrating from ACID Pro to Cakewalk, and your tutorials are invaluable. I don't know whether you've run across Stochas, but it's a free plugin that can give a really nice randomness to your drum patterns. It plays very well with Cakewalk, and you can build your patterns in Stochas then play them back into whatever drum sounds you want. There's a bit of a learning curve to it, but it's worth it. Thanks again!
I have a solution for the problem at 10:55. What I do is to have a keyboard shortcut for bounce to clips. these are my steps: 1. Click on any empty space in the piano roll (very important, because you might accidentally bounce all tracks) 2. Select all using Ctrl+A 3. Press your keyboard shortcut for "bounce to clips" That way you can bounce midi clips into one clip without leaving the piano roll. Hope you like my suggestion. 😀
If I made it through your complete Mix, Record, Release series last year, you can be damn sure I made it all the way through this one now. Thanks, Mike, more great stuff!
Having recently discovered Mike's videos I've learnt more in the last few weeks than in the eight years I've been using Cakewalk. As I'm not much of a keyboard player I prefer using the step sequencer than the piano roll for midi. It would be nice to see a full video on using the step sequencer if possible.
Mike, thank you very, very much! I'm a beginner in Cakewalk and after using FL Studio it was extremely difficult for me to get used to the piano roll here. I had a painful question how to pull the highlited patterns or notes without copying and paisting in order to save my time and you gave the complete and clear answer! It's a very informative video! Get my LIKE and a subscription!)
Thanks for all your tutorials my guy, any new DAW can be very daunting so it's great you've saved us all many hours of frustration figuring this stuff out.
Mike you really do a nice job of explaining. This is about where I am at in editing MIDI drums and other instruments. As a vet of graphics software from a previous career I can really appreciate how deep this software is. As a user of other DAWs, I am often surprised that Cakewalk by Bandlab is free :D Thank you again, I know I'll be rewatching this for the finer points! Cheers
Thanks for this! These tips help transform a “mechanical” composition into a more natural sounding performance. It blew me away how the entire feel of the rhythm you constructed changed when all you did was adjust the hi-hat and kick into triplets! So after you made the adjustments, I’m looking at the triplet notes, filling the measure exactly the same way as the previous measures, with only the adjustments made to time the notes into triplets, yet my brain is telling me that the rhythm shouldn’t “feel” so drastically different; the entire character of the rhythm changed drastically, but you only moved four notes, amazing! (Maybe it won’t be so amazing when I get a little more theory under my belt.)
Hey man just wanted to say that you are an absolute saint. I've been watching a lot of your videos recently and they've all been extremely helpful and easy to follow/understand. Cheers and thanks a lot for making all of these tutorials for free!
Mike, can't thank you enough for all your help. Also, I'm sorry to bring you and/or your viewers my problem, but I don't honestly know where else to find my solution. I've been struggling with this for months now. I can usually figure out midi stuff, it's not so complicated... BUT .. this one stumps me completely. Here's the short explanation of my problem. I record midi with my MOXF8 and it records perfectly.. HOWEVER, the playback is exactly a full measure late. it shows the note info happening at the right time, but the audio is a full measure late. obviously i can work around this, but its annoying as hell and .. i can't sleep at night cuz it's got my brain on a WTF-loop.. I hope you can help. I'll understand if you don't find the time to address this. I realize how popular you are, we all appreciate what you do for us . Thanks again my friend, I'm privileged to enjoy your lessons. You are awesome. Any advise would be so appreciated.
I think I found the answer. After trying almost all possibilities of echo-on/off, all the different time clock settings, I think i actually stumbled onto the right one for my system. Not sure how, and don't really care much, just glad it's working finally.. hahaha
Super helpful video. I've been using Cakewalk for many years but I haven't taken the time to learn all these great shortcuts. This will save alot of production time in the future. Thank you!
Thanks Mike. As with your other Bandlab videos, this is a great learning experience. And, yes, I would like to know more about Bandlab shortcuts. I use a few, but after watching today's video , there are way too many that I don't know.
Another trick I use with drums is to create a 1 or 2 bar pattern and then convert the clip into a 'Groove Clip'. That can then be 'dragged' from either end in track view and it automatically creates repeats of the patterns. You can also drag it in part measures. You end up with a long single clip you can move and copy/paste. You can split and isolate parts later on if you want to edit them.
That was great Mike! Even though midi input and editing is the main thing I do I still get confused with it! I really must learn the key commands too! As with others the track pane was aa revelation. Be great to see more midi tutorials in the future and I need to go back and watch previous ones and this one again!
Hi Mike! I made it "this far" and it's been very handy! Thank you very much once again! By the way! I took your feed back about Arturia MiniaLab and its velocity response on board. Only, instead of the MiniLab 25, I went for the MKII and I'm very satisfied with its performance! When it's used with its Analog lab, it becomes serious stuff!!
Thanks again Mike - very informative and enlightening. As you mentioned about keyboard shortcuts, that would be another interesting and useful tutorial! Cheers ....
I am huge fan of your channel sir. Someday I would like to make music :) I am a novice guitar player. I dont have much idea about creating music. Kudos to you for helping out beginners?
I've been using Cakewalk for years, but after I found your channel, I only started to understand and use it properly. I am so happy that there is finally someone who can explain it well and calmly! Could you show how to edit a hi-hat pedal in another midi video?
this is a great help for me Creative Sauce. Thank you. I keep making my demos and covers through the tips and tuts you're sharing. God bless you more and more power.
Love these tutorials! It's so much easier to learn from a master, who knows all of the tips and tricks. Thank you, Mike!🙏 But, I've got a new trick up my sleeve. I'm a laser artist/maker. So, I've just 'made' a midi controllable Teensy waveform generator to output complex harmonic waveforms (similar to audio chords), called cycloids to my laser projectors. Your L&R audio outputs are my X&Y Lissajous image outputs. But, I also need discrete RGB outputs for color control and modulation, all generated by the Teensy's DACs. So, I need to use the Cakewalk DAW (thanks to your recommendations) to simultaneously communicate with different Teensy generators, aka instruments (hopefully via subgroups and/or patch points), which are physically located inside multiple laser projectors, solely via usbMIDI instructions. Your midi notes along the piano roll are my image presets, except my instrument is the Teensy. I also need to use CC levels to control my imagery, either via the timeline or manually with a MIDI mixer, currently an Akai APC40 mkii (with plans to make a customized MIDI laser control desk). Of course, I understand that we're speaking different languages, so it's up to me to do the translations. The key difference is that my stereo audio outputs are commercial songs, already set in stone. All of my MIDI signals are being sent to directly to external devices via USB, so the two never interact. Just thought I'd share my project, so please wish me rotsa-ruck, cause I'm going to need all the ruck that I can get. 😎
Thank you for this and all the other awesome videos you make, Mike! The way you explain is great! Both delving into details and not loosing the big picture, simply great. It's very difficult to keep people of different know how levels interested, but in my opinion you manage this marvelously. Keep up! 🎶
I love your videos so much that.. I have hit the like button 101 times...😇😇 but the hell TH-cam😠😡🤬, it just adds only one like... 😉😜😜 Shame on TH-cam..😷
I have learned more from this guy in 5 sec, then I’ve learned in a whole day of just fiddling around in Cakewalk by myself 🤦🏾♀️😂 Thank you! 🙏🏽
I'm a "veteran" but ALWAYS learn something new. Your tutorials are excellent! Many thank! By-the-way - I love the new studio!!!!!
Cheers. I learn something almost every day, even after decades! Thanks for watching:)
I am a long time Cakewalk user (Guitar Studio>Guitar Tracks>Sonar>CbB). I have watched every video on Creative Sauce pertaining to CbB, and there is still SO MUCH TO LEARN. Yup, its very handy! Thanks for watching :)
Your videos have been very helpful. Last year I got a laptop computer. And during this past Christmas season I bought a laptop performance keyboard.

Jim, its dedicated people like you, that inspire me to always make my best effort. Thank you so much as always, you are a very valued viewer :)
You make the Best Cakewalk Tutorials. Auto Lock in the Track Pane for the win. Thank you
Thank so much, it's my pleasure:)
Why did I spend so much time clicking around and trying in Cakewalk instead of watching these 25 minutes and learning so much? 😅
Really a great guide, thanks a lot!
I MADE IT THIS FAR! 😁
Wonderful, wonderful video. I've been fiddling with stuff the hard way for years, now I know a much easier and faster way. THANK YOU!

Been using fl studio for close to a decade but thanks to you Mike I'm slowly switching to bandlab!
Many thanks bud!
Great to hear! Thank you :)
@Creative Sauce Also I did make it this far. I have 1 other question, do you have a video on the routing in band land especially with the kits?
Wow! another great video. A lot of content there, I think I will have to watch it a few more times to get it all to sink in. Those short cuts are really useful and the track pane is a feature that has always been hidden on my set up, mainly because I wasn't aware it was there! I'm off to start working on some midi tracks! What a inovative person you are.... Thank you, again.
You are very kind. Thank you :)
Excellent topic that is largely overlooked. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Dan, my pleasure:)
I discovered this channel no long ago and all Cakewalk videos are excellent.
As a newbie to Cakewalk your tutorials are so useful. Clearly delivered and with loads of information. Thank you so much.
Really enjoined this tutorial Mike. I am new to DAWS and drum have baffleed me up to now. Also liked your inclusion of shortcut keys. Yes, I made it all the way to the end.
Cheers John, good luck on your journey, and have fun :)
Thank you, i am a Cakewalk beginner and I find it super impressive and overwhelming at the same time, and your videos have really helped me so far
I made it to the end and this was VERY helpful in unlocking a bunch of goodies I knew were there but never took the time to figure it out. You're the best cakewalk tutor on YT IMO, thanks heaps for your hard work👍
Very helpful video on simplifying the workflow on Cakewalk - so many tools at hand that I overlooked for so long due to an "intuitive" approach. Thanks for this, Mike!
Best channel about Cakewalk ;)
Good to see your systems back working!
All the way til the end, always!:)I hadn't watched this one yet! Found it timely. Thank you Mike!
Fantastic tutorial! I've been a Sonar user since 2XL and you taught me things I never knew. Brilliant!
Thanks Mike! I've been using audio tracks for over 12 months but now just getting started with midi - thanks for the useful information - very easy to understand.

Yes that's what I do too :-)
Great teaching Mike!
Your way of explaining is top teir man 👍
I have a solution for the problem at 10:55. What I do is to have a keyboard shortcut for bounce to clips. these are my steps:
1. Click on any empty space in the piano roll (very important, because you might accidentally bounce all tracks)
2. Select all using Ctrl+A
3. Press your keyboard shortcut for "bounce to clips"
That way you can bounce midi clips into one clip without leaving the piano roll. Hope you like my suggestion. 😀
Clever solution. Thanks.
Glad to see some ads in your vids Mike, it just proves that your channel is growing.
Hello Mike, this kind of explanation is very nice to get to know Cakewalk better. I think you will please many people, including me! Thanks!
Thanks, Mike! Very informative, precise and concise!
Yes. I made it to the end. Always enjoy your insights. I've saved this one and will be referring to it a lot. Thanks Mike.
i'm a longtime pro user using a lot of MIDI, and guess what, i did learn a few things. Good on ya.
Awesome!!!
If I made it through your complete Mix, Record, Release series last year, you can be damn sure I made it all the way through this one now. Thanks, Mike, more great stuff!

Simplesmente mudou a minha vida. Eu morria de preguiça de escrever midi. Agora ficou foi divertido.
Obrigado!!

Very usefull video ! spending one hour watching it in detail allows saving a lot of time afterwards "in the heat of the action" !
This video was extremely helpful as I'm doing more with virtual instruments. Thanks!
Super helpful video. I've been using Cakewalk for many years but I haven't taken the time to learn all these great shortcuts. This will save alot of production time in the future. Thank you!
Hi Mike... Yep, I made it to the end of the video and will watch it again... and again, and again. :-) Thanks so much for posting these vids!!!
You are a legend! Every video you make is so informative so thank you.
Thank you so much! Very useful even I have been using Cakewalk for over 20 years. Best regards!
Thanks Mike, I made it to the end and picked up several new tips.
Awesome David. Thanks for hanging in there!
I came to this video to learn the basics of Cakewalk. Great content!
I made it to the end. Terrific lesson
Brilliant!! Thanks Mike. Very informative, as are all of your vids.
I always make it to the end of your videos. So well done and informative. Thanks for what you do.
Thank you so much sir for the midi walkthrough. You've made life easy for me when using cakewalk.
Another informative and interesting video. Will need to watch again and again to digest it all. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Yes, MIDI is one of cakewalk's great strengths. There will be more!!!!
Good to hear that David its a really handy little keyboard :)
Yeh I got that far. And I'll be watching again and again till it all sinks in. Thanks. I got what I was looking for and more.
Thank you Mike. Great tutorials!
Thanks again Mike - very informative and enlightening. As you mentioned about keyboard shortcuts, that would be another interesting and useful tutorial! Cheers ....
Agreed!
Superb video tutorial. I can now utilize SI Drums so much better. Thanks again!!!! 🎶🎚🎸🎼
I didn't know all the short cuts - thank you
My pleasure :)
You're a great teacher. You help me so much. Merci infiniment.
Nice work , Very Helpful, Thanks!
Nice tutorial. Thanks.
this is a great help for me Creative Sauce. Thank you. I keep making my demos and covers through the tips and tuts you're sharing. God bless you more and more power.
Made it to the end and took great notes
Love these tutorials! It's so much easier to learn from a master, who knows all of the tips and tricks. Thank you, Mike!🙏
But, I've got a new trick up my sleeve.
Yes I made it this far, but did have to watch this video over two days :) such a helpful tutorial, only had Cakewalk 4 days.
Hypnotized by the fans.

Great tutorial and profound knowledge of the software. Thank you!
Great tip on the soft mode
Thank you for this and all the other awesome videos you make, Mike! The way you explain is great! Both delving into details and not loosing the big picture, simply great. It's very difficult to keep people of different know how levels interested, but in my opinion you manage this marvelously. Keep up! 🎶
