That „glang“ gets me every time. It‘s not an explosion, not a dying battery, just a distinguished sound of a bell like last order in a pub. Very british way to end it.
That *glang* was most likely the sound of a piston breaking free of the crankshaft and getting smacked around in the crankcase and cylinder wall, and possibly smacking valves in the process, most likely due to the engine sustaining that landing and the timing chain/tensioner possibly snapping.
I love the fact that the guys are genuinely mad at Richard for wrecking the car. Like two older brothers scolding the youngest. And keep in mind, this is an old car and a Jag, but it's nowhere near being a unicorn. Still, the fact that it DID break their hearts a bit shows that they're the purest breed of car guys. Mad respect, we will never get a trio as legendary as these blokes.
As someone who has had a rod thrown in their engine twice (yes, I know), I can say it's not something you can drive away from (if anything, you are now the proud owner of a 2 ton paperweight).
I seen a conrod go on my tractor while It didn't go all the way through it created a bulging crack in the block Upon further investigation oil pressure was lost trough the balencer shafts and it went bang
I knew someone who thought they could just take the broken rod out and keep going it surprisingly ran....but only for about a mile before it literally shook itself off the mounts and promptly exploded.
I had a 1984 Jaguar XJS V12 - what I learned was this - I was no racing car even though it had a 160 mph speedo, it handled pretty well on Perelli tires, it was a huge gas hog, needing 95 octane fuel, and it was terribly expensive to maintain and repair! It was smooth, silent, sexy, glamorous to drive, and also looked great in my driveway or at the beach. Ladies if you can afford a good one, it is a classic car to own and be proud of.
I briefly had a V11 XJ-S. Watching the fuel gauge became an obsession Was going to service it, but buying twelve spark plugs is a painful prospect so I just changed the oil and got rid. Never did find the missing cylinder.
The Glang is the funniest moment in all of TG TGT history in my book because it couldn't be scripted, it was just the perfect sound at the perfect moment.
Oh man this one was superb. This was the best episode yet... when Hammond completly destroyed the jag and tried to start it.... this makes my day everytime i'm stressed out.. watch this and my day is fine again!
The bit where Hammond says about the boiled egg when Clarkson opens the sun roof could of been funnier if May had of said 'Remember your own incident Hammond? Oh no, you can't remember it.'
I still want to know if they actually destroyed the car or if this was all a bit. My father used to own one just like it. Actually there's a realistic chance this was the one he owned.
Knowing hammond’s history of being a menace to machinery, I believe this was real. The set up for the bit might have been staged with Hammond driving the car far beyond its ability, but the result from the Jump I think is genuine. Any car not built for landing like that will break, not to mention the car is around 60+ years old.
Do you say Jaaaaag or Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag? 🤔
Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag
Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggg

In fact, it's quite the pretty sound. So musical.
Did you notice Clarkson trying his hardest to hide himself laughing at that point? That was, as they would say, brilliant!
That *glang* was most likely the sound of a piston breaking free of the crankshaft and getting smacked around in the crankcase and cylinder wall, and possibly smacking valves in the process, most likely due to the engine sustaining that landing and the timing chain/tensioner possibly snapping.
Gets me too...every time..HILLARIOUS!
@@RaggedyAtomnope, that's just the starter ring gear. I hear that sound every day.
Hammond recently admitted to regretting destroying the Jag he was using in this video.
I mean he runs a classic car restoration business now.. he should be pretty disappointed!
He should restore it in The Little Cog now 😂
This is from years ago

@@micktaylor9332 I can't pull a straight face each time I hear that GLANG word. 🤣🤣🤣 "Hammond you idiot"
@@sam-nariman6236 👍👍😂🤣😂
Possibly the starter, old jag starters (specifically the coupler) can make weird noises like that when you stop cranking an engine that doesn't start.
@@archygrey9093 it is the starter motor. Got a mark 10 and that's the sound it makes.
The first time I heard the *"GLANG!"* from Hammond's car, I laughed so hard I lost a filling from one of my teeth.
GLANG!
Sue your dentist
@@tronixfix Why? It was an old filling and the dentist thought it was so silly I'd laughed it out, he replaced it for free.

What do you mean “destroys”??? The car was completely fine afterwards it still drove perfectly and it even grew some new badges and features!
Probably because it was a different car 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@bruceleighton1186 whaaat??? Noooo that’s the same car

And the car number plate also different 🤣🤣
And the steering wheel 😂
Jeremy's face when that rod went🤣🤣
the GLANG noise was spot on great timing 😂
And the immediate look of pain on Clarkson's face afterwards! :)
It's not like you can plan to throw a rod either. Absolutely hilarious.
@@lb9355that's not a thrown rod. It's the starter ring gear that's all.

jaguar 420 isnt any car either
That face and nod what Hammond do when he lies about the time is just perfect.
Sometimes I wish they didn’t deliberately destroy some cars. Hammond’s Jag looks great
was probably better that way cause now it's getting a new engine and probably a new owner that would love it.
Its a magnificent classic indeed.
Yeah

The best noise from the grand tour

Well they were filming the next adventure in march this year
I'm sure you've seen it by now but a scandi flick is out! It's incredible! Easily one of my fav episodes and I've seen em all. TG + TGT
The GLANG noise was the starter recoiling against the ring gear

Just a typical cold start nothing to see here

Little summery 420g was restored, xjs is still on the road, xj6 and xjr are unknown, xk8 obviously doesn't exist anymore
Lol James's dust cloud only affected Hammond, May just stood there.

Squared out the round wing mirrors too! Nice job Richard!
I drive a 78 xj6l daily in Idaho USA. Love it so much, easy to work on too.
Richards Face at 2:11 xD xD
Hammond’s always somehow managing to crash cars into the ground.
They're on the Unaweep Tabeguache scenic byway in far western Colorado. Beautiful drive in the middle of nowhere.
Nothing better than watching a Grand Tour Jaaaaag race 😂😂😂

The three kings in motor show!

Depends on what market and the SAE rating systems they had at the time.
What Colorado road did they start on with the scenery and no traffic. Any idess please. I want to include it on our trip.
Thank you in advance.
