    FAQ
*1) Shoreline length:* At 8:39 you can see that the 7,500km calculated by the GIS software includes all of the island shoreline. The US side is missing from the dataset but it would still be less than 10,000km of shoreline. I used to make maps for a living and I assure you the 100,000km number that gets thrown around is not accurate.
*2) Why no fishing?* I did a bit of trolling big lures for muskie but that didn't pan out so any fishing footage just slowed down the video aimlessly...and the small fish usually aren't worth including.
*3) Why hate on motorboats?* I'm not hating, I'm glad they're enjoying the outdoors. I know this lake is full of boats but as I said this was an experiment to see if I could find some quiet late in the season.
*4) Main track:* Max H - Once Loved
*5) Bought the stove from black spruce gear in Ontario*

@@LostLakes just curious, why are you using maps? There are apps like Gaia and OnX, which can track your trips via GPS and fully off grid. Even if you loose orientation, you know exactly the trail back. Well, that means you will need often to charge the phone. Yet, if you have sa small solar panel, you will be able to charge it.
I understand, that you don't want to be stick to the phone, but this is just for convenient navigation. You can even save the trail from your last trip, so next time you have exact navigation.

Lake of the Woods is nice cottage country and a good birding area. A quick tip for you, Jon: A raven will flap its wings and glide now and then when flying, whereas a crow flaps its wings the whole time it is flying. I was living in New Brunswick back in the 1970s when they sprayed the province with DDT. The bald eagle population plummeted, but they have made a comeback. I'm glad I've lived long enough to see the recovery.

Thank you Jon, another great adventure. I love that you don't try to sugar coat it, but at the same time you don't whine about it either. With careful editing you could have made this a "trip of a lifetime" video, but you were honest. You could have also made it a "oh woe is me, I had a terrible time." But you were honest and didn't do that either. It's a fine balance and you do very well. We've all had trips that didn't pan out the way we expected: the weather was bad, the bugs were bad, we got injured, it wasn't what we were looking for.
Thank you for your honesty: it gives validation to all of our trips that don't go according to plan.

As a young man our extended family enjoyed a log cabin on the shores of Lake Superior. I watched as the original plots were sold and people began to build cabins and install long railways across wide stretches of beach for their boats. They were ugly. Even at that age, I recognized the blight people were bringing to this land. Fortunately, others noticed it as well. The entire area was purchased by the Department of the Interior. All the cabins, shacks, and railways were removed, and 40 miles of scenic shoreline was turned into a National Lakeshore. Their were howls of protest and lawsuits by the landowners, but they were compensated fairly. Some local residents who frequented the area for hunting and fishing protested the usurpation of their "rights." I have traveled the world literally from Antarctica to the Artic. This is my favorite spot in the world. It speaks to me like no other. I felt a great sense of loss as the government took over. I have returned hundreds of times to have my soul renewed. During those times I watched it mature as a National Park. Nearly 1 million people visit this area each year and that traffic has sustained two small towns that I doubt would have made it. The not so surprising thing is, there is less damage to the land than there was when only a few fortunate families owned it. Sure, there is more traffic to several locations but most of the natural beauty remains secluded and has returned to a nearly pristine state.
I could never have done what I am about to describe if it had remained in private ownership. I have taken my grandchildren back many times. My favorite fishing hole, where I caught my first rainbow trout, looks the same as it did when I was a child, and actually has more fish. My grandson caught his first Salmon and Steelhead on a flyrod at that location. I was able to take my grand daughter on a walk along my favorite Brook Trout stream and sit on a sandy bank under the same white pine I did as a kid.
Lake of the Woods has that kind of beauty. I hope it will be well managed in the future for the benefit of those who follow us.

What a great success. I wish the same would happen where I live in the Ozarks. But, it's not private land it's already protected federally. The problem is the local community polluting the isolated small spring fed waterways and more importantly the outfitters that bring 1.2 Million people a year to 3 small streams. Very few realize what they are seeing when they are down here and how different it is from how it should be. The ignorance is palatable.

      @jimfromm3981 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@mflacke I sorry to hear that. Visitors do not have, nor ever will have time to bond with the land. You have to experience counting the years in seasons rather than hours before you can really appreciate that you are as much a part of it as it is of you. Find yourself a little out of the way spot and love it until it loves you back.

There are motor boats and island homes etc. Still - LOW is an Awesome body of water with world class fishing. And plenty of friendly people. I always wave to fellow boaters and they almost always wave back. ps. You can't blame people people for homes on the lake. They are living the dream. There are plenty of protected and/or remote areas to canoe in Ontario. I've done some serious trips lasting two weeks or more. Can't get enough. Great Video!!!

A Minnesotan who owned two properties on Lake of the Woods - one for 36 years a remote log cabin for 24 years on the Alneau Peninsula. We were up there winter and summer for 8 - 10 weeks of the year. Had incredible adventures, winter camped, kayaked and hiked all over, followed a trapper on a trap line on sleds several winters. One dear friend was a retired conservation officer who knew the area like the back of his hand. I recognize many of the spots in this video. There is so much interesting history and prehistory to explore. Birds and flora are worth going up for alone. We counted 21 orchid species one spring. We made friends with many knowledgeable people and some of the Natives. I am so grateful for the rich experiences of this place. In the 80s and 90s we would see lots of moose, but rarely now. I will still be going up once or twice a year. I always tell people to discover Lake of the Woods while you are young, so you can come back again and again. The family cabin was just sold this past summer. It was hard to let it go, but it was time with some of the 4 owners getting into their 80s. BTW: Blueberry Inlet is certainly a favorite - so pretty and the crappies are huge.

I worked as a Junior Ranger at Lake of the Woods in 1977. Lower south east corner near Rainy River. There are cactus (cacti)? there with little red flowers that are a protected species (Opuntia fragilis ), also in some of the woods the ground was covered in moss as thick as 2 feet. It felt like you were walking on a forest floor of pillows. The camp is no longer there and was given back to the natives I beleive in the early 90's. Love the videos.

Yes! A new LL video. The weekend has started well. My Dad who had immigrated to Canada from England (for the second time) in 1964 came up with a plan to take 4 kids ranging in age from 2-11 plus my English Aunt and Uncle on a three week vacation to Lake of the Woods. It was 1965. We drove from Kitchener to Nestor Falls in a 1960 Rover 3 litre and earlier model Humber Super Snipe. No seat belts. Blankets on the floor behind the front seats and acrodssthe transmission tunnel that we took turns sleeping on. My hilarious and imaginative Aunt telling us non politically correct "Indian legends" made up on the spot as we drove through Wawa; for years after I thought the signs along the highway warning to watch for "falling rock" was referring to a disenchanted Sioux Chief. Talk about an adventure. No 4 lane highways in those days let me tell you. I wish I could tell you some of the stories of that trip!

I really liked this one , not the boats or the algae or the lack of remote wilderness , but man the people that live there have an amazing back yard .
You said you didn't expect to see any wildlife , but you saw a lot .
It's differently not a place to send other canoers , but it's beautiful and captivating .
Even the algae , caught my interest , I've only seen it once in person and it was devastating to small environment it was in , well destroying .
But it looked really interging , alive ? Vibrant ? Life ? Wear you were .
I know it's deadly , but so is most of the wilderness and it just shows how dangerous the unknown can be , the wilderness is amazing and deadly .
Thank you , for sharing your experience and being cautious .
Super glad you turned around , that algae is super dangerous and most people don't even know it is .

I paddle in Maine and there are motor boats everywhere. There are always little pockets of solitude, but the motor noise is invasive. Wilderness can be defined many ways, but some of us have to be content with our small pockets of undeveloped land along a lake or shore. The plus side is that the community of paddlers get to see and hear the critters, enjoy the plants, and listen to the loons. You are so fortunate to live where true wilderness is so available.

I'm always hesitant to plan trips on populated lakes like this, always feels like it will be more rewarding to get to more remote places where the motorboat count is near-zero, but this is a good reminder of how much beauty there is to discover on more accessible lakes, even if there's a cottage or two interspersed. 15m in and enjoying the video very much, great job on the video!

Jon, I enjoyed this video just as much as your amazing trip to the Barrenlands. For many of us the closest we will get to nature this month will be a walk in a city park. On the rare occasion that I actually get out on a lake its common to share the lake with other kayakers and boaters. As always the videography is fantastic and thanks for explaining the cause of the green algae overgrowth.

Dear sir …as an American ..I have numerous comments. ..first off I gotta love your good looking meals you prepare on your outings! I also notice I didn’t see you fishing or consuming any fish ( walleyes ) on this trip ..unlike your Lake Superior anventures ..i also would say from a Minnesotan perspective ( I live in Duluth ) I have have grown up on shores of LakeSuperior and have seen many changes ..the lamprey eel ..the cleanup of the St. Louis River ..experimenting with many fish species .the rise and fall of the smelt population ..etc I have also fished and camped on lake of the woods …been been through the northwest angle ..I have also been to Thunder Bay ..near nananabijou and silver islet mine entrance ..I:have scuba dived near Thunder Bay exploring old underwater mining sites ..( historic garbage dumps ) you should drink the water on the Minnesota side of lake of the woods …disgusting,..tastes just like sulfur and smells terrible ..and they have just recently discovered zebra muscles …now I am not sure how the “ flow” of lake of woods direction is ..could it be some of the crap you are experiencing comes from the United States side.. if lake of the woods is like Lake Superior it takes hundreds of years for the water to change over ..

I'm glad you posted this video Jon, and I'm glad you spoke about it. We need to change our agricultural practices because we are not just harming nature but eventually ourselves. I have three kids and four grandkids and I fear for the world when they are my age. On top of all that my country voted in a president who only cares about making money, nature be damned. Besides that gloom and doom it looked like a beautiful place that holds a lot of hope if we make the right choices. Cheers!

Hello there. The decision to turn back on a trip is always a tough one. I used to climb and deciding to not summit always felt like a form of grief but once turned back, felt like a good decision had been made - better to live to fight another day! The motor boats felt like a scar. Fine if they want to use them but why not go more slowly and enjoy the tranquilty - go at 5mph rather than 15. Thanks for another great vid!
