YT reminded me that the channel is 7 years old today...so grateful for your response to the first episode of the Trippin' series that started last week which recaps this youtube journey and my first year of full-time camping (155 days along with behind the scenes pieces). That series will continue throughout the year and the plan is to release one episode per season. The next episodes are still in progress. Regular trips will continue to be posted in the meantime :)
Remember it's Spring (aka: mating season) That's just how otters mate. The male grabs the female by the scruff of the neck (she's tougher there and it doesn't hurt her) and holds on before he mounts her. She's actually the one dragging him around while he hangs on. LOL. They'll wrestle and roll and play both on land and off while he holds on tight. If you review the footage you may observe papa otter's, ahem, red rocket a couple of times. Aaah...love in Lake Superior.🥰
Yeah my first thought was it was just courtship. I once witnessed two bald eagles one chasing the other before going into a talon clasped spiral down to the water before breakinging apart and resuming their chase over the trees. Now I know it's just a courtship ritual and not a fight as I originally thought 13 years ago.
It's become abundantly clear that you're a plant for BIG NAAN's marketing arm with your breathtaking camera work and soothing, genuine, hilarious perspective. Do I eat more naan now? Yes I do. Do I crush your content knowing full well I'm being gamed by a naan lobbyist? I most certainly do. Bravo Jon Naan Jovi.
Your camera work has become next-level amazing lately, it's as if the viewer is sitting next to you in the canoe or flying by on the back of a bald eagle. Thanks for taking us along!
Life is such a rush. I envy you. Being able to slow it down and take it all in without the 9 to 5 bullshit…good on you. We all live vicariously through you
My wife and I appreciate you gently handling the fish you release. No need to cause additional trauma to the wildlife or to catch and keep more than needed. We love the video.
Making this Saturday morning so much better. You are a true artist with pixels of light and sound waves. And it’s been amazing to see your channel and your skill set grow. You were not born with these gifts. You mastered them with passion.
I spent several years of early childhood on the south shores of Lake Superior and I could swear I've felt the region calling me back my entire adult life. Seeing it through your eyes brings back so many good memories for me, and I always learn so much from your videos. Thank you so much for doing this.
Congratulations on the 7 years! I have to say your videos, the cinematography, the editing, sound...are next level! This is like watching a Nat Geo film. Its stunning and we need to find a way to get you to a Mil subs or have you make videos for Nat Geo.
John you constantly remind me that there is a world out there worth exploring. Love your content can't wait to try my hand at documenting my own adventures!
Thank you Jon. My mother and I watch your adventures together. She says they are the best part of her week. You really have a special talent and love for nature. May the sun always shine upon your face and may the wind always be at your back.
Saved this one for an early Sunday morning watch with my first cup of coffee. Not disappointed - a great watch. You seem to get the most scenic video. Beautiful!!
Congratulations on 7 years! I just love your cinematography and you inspire me to get outdoors. So much so that we’ve booked a full summer camping trip! Nowhere quite so outdoors though.
Spring is my favorite time to paddle. The landscape is so varied. The solitude is guaranteed. Another great video. I miss that part of Canada and happy you bring it right into my livingroom. Thank you.
Jon it can't be overstated the absolute talent you have for filming...an extra for me is SOUND..a video can have beautiful scenes but if the sound is off(annoying music/commentary etc) it can ruin it! But you capture everything from ambient sound to perfect musical choices to informative & humorous commentary placed perfectly!! Extraordinary really🙏💜
Your videos are never anything but the BEST. You're a master of excellence in quality and quantity. Age and mounting arthritis have brought our own trips to a halt, basically...but we fully enjoy ALL OF YOURS. When time might allow, try and do another with your own dad again.😊
I often think early spring is kind of an annoying season -- it's soggy, it's somehow too warm and too cold at the same time, you can't do anything fun. Thanks for showing that that doesn't have to be true!
I got a bit teary watching this.. I have such treasured memories of Lake Superior. My uncle owned Nicol Island near Rossport. We spent time there. I grew up in Manitouwadge, and we used to camp on the shores of Superior. We fished for smelts and Lake Trout near Neys Park. Watching your video makes me realize how much I miss the north shore.
I've been watching you with my youngest son these past many years. He's now heading off on his own. He messaged me to say you just released a new video. Made me realize I wasn't a member. I am now! Thank you for sharing your trips and stories. My son and I are closer because we sat with you on so many journeys. Sincerely, BJ from Maine. (Practically Canada 😊)
I’ve been watching you for years Jon. you’ve gone from someone I used to laugh at in his naïve mistakes- to a top notch experienced traveler, narrator, camper, paddler, filmographer. Wishing you the best.
Congrats on 7 years, and congrats on that great footage of the Golden-crowned Kinglet. One doesn't always see that red in the middle of the yellow, much less capture it on "film".
We have watched your videos when you see the northern lights and how much that means to you. Last night was our first time seeing them in Montana and the experience was something we will never forget. Amazing. We just wanted to share. We appreciate everything the two of you do to bring us great videos.
I've been saving this one. Watching as I pack for the first long weekend trip of the year. Also, my Lost Lakes ball cap and stickers happened to arrive today. I'm fully stoked on trip season now!
Only 15 minutes in and already awesome with incredible scenery, eagles, otter and the rare Ice duck! Just love your videos. They can never be long enough for me.
I don't usually comment on TH-cam, but your TH-cam channel has become by far my favorite channel in the last few years. Every time I long for nature and wilderness, your videos quench my wanderlust at least a little. In 2 weeks I'm finally going to Canada again; until then your videos will sweeten my anticipation. Best regards from Germany
The Canadian Ice Duck (Canard Glace Canadensis) is classified as extremely endangered (they may be extinct by end of season). Please don't handle them if at all possible do a no contact release, and report all sightings to your local conservation authority.
The otters were so amazing! The one eating the fish was annoyed with you, but just wanted to eat, while trying to get away😂 The momma otter was also too funny and entertaining! Amazing footage!
Permission to use poor grammar here but I think them otters was doin it!!😊. Jon, this was just a wonderful bit of serenity and peace. I’ve gotta say that the I couldn’t help but notice the geology of the lake. From red rocks like one might see in Sedona to what looked like basaltic columns! The wildlife was really cool too! The water is the color of a warm Caribbean bay😃🥶!! Thank you for using your stove on pristine sites. I absolutely love that stove of yours! It’s proof that you don’t need holes on the bottom burn plate on a flat pack stove to get the O2 you need. Just a great design! With my emberlit, I constantly have to poke the air holes on the bottom of the side plates to clear the coals from the holes. I also bought a pocket bellows for more O2 as well. Ive said this before but I still don’t know how you sleep at night in those woods alone. I feel like I would be shitting my pants! It gives me anxiety just thinking about it. Anyway… amazing journey and I too am excited about paddle season. It’s actually started I’ve just been busy at work and life🙄. I’ll get out there!! Boston Habah is calling!!!😁😁👍🏼 Peace.
Jon as usual you didn’t disappoint you always show the greatest scenery and I love the wildlife inactions!! I want to tell you when you were on the ice edge I thought of the titanic!! lol but thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us!! Take care and God bless you both!! 🩷🩵
This is just what I need to recover after torturing myself watching the Leafs play. Phenomenal as always Jon, congrats on 7 amazing years and hopefully many many more.
I recently came across this channel and I am enthralled. I am a senior now, living in the Columbia Valley BC. But I grew up on Lake Superior and all those little lakes beyond. Lots of time spent in steam baths near a dock and then into the lake. The filming is so visually stunning, takes my breath away from time to time. I can smell the lake, the spruce forest, the campfire. I can taste the blueberries and the pickerel. Memories of me and my family spending so much time in the bush. Thanks for all the pangs in my heart, feels like I am going home. All my best to you and Erin and your friend Xander from Jean.
That was a good one, thanks a lot Jon! It is nice to see a couple of Swedish things pop up here from time to time, in this one you were using the Trangia, the factory is about a half hour drive away from me. I also spotted yout pants from Fjällräven. Good choices! =) Always a pleasure to tune in, all the best from lat. 63 in Sweden (wich will be ice free in a few weeks time)🌲
Circumnavigating Simpson is on my most wanted list! I’ll have to get the maps and campsites from you. Lake Superior never disappoints and this was a magic video with all the birds and otters and spectacular ice and crystal clear water… loved it!!
I have hiked Isle Royale in June and seen snow. So it’s fun for me to see how much snow and ice is on northern lake Superior in April. Awesome Video Jon! 🛶⛺️😃
We were right in the path of totality for the eclipse and also watched it over one of our local lakes here in WNY. Fished in the morning and spent the rest of the day waiting for the clouds to break. About 20 minutes before totality they finally did. I'm a cynic by nature but it was actually quite humbling. Glad I got the chance to see it.
Happy channel birthday! Great drone shots, great water clarity, great Lake Superior agates all around. Really pretty and a nice setup for the upcoming season. Your moose encounter reminded me; I was asleep in my truck camper in the pre-dawn hours on a cold Front Range morning next to South Boulder Creek and suddenly I was in an earthquake! The truck is rocking and I'm just freaking out, it's so weird. Then I hear the hoof beats of two moose walking by on the creek cobblestones- a cow and calf moose. The mom had been scratching herself on the edge of my camper and that's what woke me up! Freakin moose. You gotta watch out for those monsters.
Here in Texas, the eclipse was total and it was awesome! We too had cloud coverage, then when the eclipse went total dark, the clouds parted. Sweet moment to remember.
Congratulations on your 7 years of success I'm so happy to have come across your channel you are one of my favorites if you see this message twice the first time I tried to send this did not go through😊👍
What an awesome first trip of the season! Lake Superior sure looks like a special spot, it is on my very long bucket list. lol Thanks for sharing your adventure. :) :)
Never disappoint us. The sound of morning coffee being poured by the open fire. And the sound of the water off the paddles is just so relaxing. Your videos make me feel that I am there.
I watch your videos and I feel peaceful. The beautiful scenery, the gentle splash of the paddle hitting water, birdsong in the air, glimpses of wildlife and your calming voice. Your trips are so well planned and so uplifting - it’s a wonderful thing. Thank you for all the pleasure your channel brings. All the best to you both
By far and away the best channel on YT. The effort that not only goes into the adventure from research to exertion, but the quality of the filming and editing is a cut above anyone else. Nice to see the bottle being used too 🙂
Jon, that was just beautiful. Thanks for taking me along on yet another spectacular adventure. I'm going to say it.... this channel is one of the very best of all of them for couch canoeists like me. And the best part....? I never even got me socks wet.🤩 huge respect btw, scary place to be this early in Canada. Can't wait for what's to come.
I’ve been to Red Rock and never really got the reason for the name - now I get it. Some unique geology in that area. Beautiful footage. Your a brave explorer. Lake Superior add ice - lots of potential danger.
Folks don't realize how quickly waves build on Great Lakes and can become too big to handle. Smart move staying put. Better safe than sorry. Thanks for taking us along
As we lived in Schreiber 1988 to 1991 with a young family and spending lots of time outdoors, fishing and camping, I find your trips so amazing and brings meback in time. Lake Superior captured my heart. Every summer when traveling to western Canada, we stop for lunch on the shore near Rossport. ❤❤
Well I don’t think I could get more pumped up for the first big trip of the year but this video has me absolutely itching to go! Beautiful video with all the drone shots of the turquoise water and ice. What an incredible place that is. Wildlife was excellent in this video. Glad you played it safe and made this journey another success. 7 years of TH-cam. Feels like we’ve been watching you forever! Time flies. Keep up the incredible work, it’s always so enjoyable to watch.
Great trip! Exceptional footage over some very beautiful scenery and unique landscapes. I appreciate your commentary. It did surprise me that you were intending to interrupt the marten/otter that turned out to be two otters. As with previous videos you created, thank you for sharing.
Thanks Jon for another great video. 7 years wow! I remember watching my first lost lakes video of your Twist lake/trappers gathering trip north of Manitouwadge. Great content. Nice new boat.
Sheer delight to watch thankyou Jon. Exclaiming long drawn out "wwooow"s at the ice curtains and formations. Heart in mouth at deep freezing chanel crossings. I echo comments in awed admiration of your artistic videography. T.
Always a welcoming gift to see your videos pop up. My dog, Alice and I enjoyed every beautiful moment. The colors in the shoreline rocks just magnificent and the birds so fun to watch. Wonder what was the neck tilting bird behavior was about. Followed iceout on St John River years ago in early May. A super exciting canoe adventure

Exactly what I was thinking. Mating season. I've seen Mallards in mating season and the female is brutalized....but, that's how God made it.
Lol thanks for the info, very interesting. Crazy kids 😂
@@mamapretz You betcha. 👍
Yep. I was laughing as he was thinking it was a fight.

Indeed.
so real
That moment you went "oh no.." and then switched to the drones shots of the ice. Magical.

Wow! Another masterpiece. Lost Lakes never misses. So excited to watch this upcoming canoeing season! Thanks for this phenomenal channel! 👏🏻👏🏻
The cinematography on this episode is just dazzling. Great work!

Thanks for those 7 years Jon. Always a pleasure to watch your work.
Every frame is a real work of art! You are a master of your craft, continue to delight us with your talent! 👏🎨
I sure love those moose droppings too! Thank goodness they collect them and sell them in grocery stores too!
Life is such a rush. I envy you. Being able to slow it down and take it all in without the 9 to 5 bullshit…good on you. We all live vicariously through you
The drone shots in this one are jaw-dropping. Beautiful video.
I love the use of the drone. It gives you a true perspective of the distance and how small in relation to the lake that canoe really is.
My wife and I appreciate you gently handling the fish you release. No need to cause additional trauma to the wildlife or to catch and keep more than needed. We love the video.
Appreciate that 🙂

Hey John, the cinematography of the ice sheet? The "Oh No," moment... TOP NOTCH! So well done!
I love that you love Lake Superior. I also love it!!
Little Lake Harbor is a wonderful spot I too have weather over there but it was on a sailboat. I love this area and have sailed it for about 35 years.

Thanks a bunch you guys ☺️ I remember finding your channel years ago on this lake with your Denison Falls video. Have a great trip!
And another great adventure😃 seeing them all. Thanks Jon
An amazing video. I don’t recall seeing anything like this before in your previous videos. Just awesome 👏
