- DO I NEED TO ADD RING GAP? HOW MUCH RING GAP IS NECESSARY WITH BOOST? HOW DO I INCREASE RING GAP FOR A BOOSTED MOTOR? HOW MUCH RING GAP DOES A STOCK 3800 L67 HAVE? DOES THE FACTORY ADD RING GAP TO A STOCK SUPERCHARGED MOTOR? HOW MUCH RING GAP DID THE STOCK 2ND RING HAVE? CAN I RUN JUST 7 PSI OF BOOST WITH STOCK RING GAP? CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO ON ADDING RING GAP TO THE 3800 V6 IN PERPARATION FOR THE EVENTUAL BIG BANG TURBO COMBO. WE PLAN TO RUN HIGH BOOST ON THE 3800 V6, SO IT WILL DEFINITELY NEED GREATER THAN STOCK RING GAP. HERE IS A VIDEO TO DEMONSTRATE HOW TO ADD THE NECESSARY RING GAP ON A TURBO (OR SUPERCHARGED) MOTOR IN PREPARATION FOR BOOST.
TURN IT UP! I'm not a v6 guy but I love seeing how much boost can be stuffed into any engine.
Can't wait to see what the big bang L67 can do! I'd love to see a 60-degree v6 big bang too. A 3500 or 3900.
A gm high feature motor would be cool to see. Even better a look at the 60 degrees like 34/3500 variant like you said!
So excited for this
guys in Oz making well over 700 rwhp from stock piston and rod l67 bottom ends with turbo I'm guessing button of the piston will let go around 850hp right where the pin goes threw just my guess my guess 850hp
Dude shoutout to Richard’s designated engine building room cargo shorts, them bad boys have 300k miles on them and are still kicking
I can't have nice things at the dyno
I rebuilt my L67 from my 2000 GTP a couple years ago at (195,000 miles) and was still running good. I measured all ring gaps when I dis-assembled it, top was .020, and the second ring was .030. The new rings were .020 for top and 2nd ring, so I gapped the 2nd ring to .030. It is all stock still, no further plans other than a daily driver. The only problems I found upon dis assembly (which were not evident when running) every exhaust valve/seat leaked, four rocker arms had abnormal wear in the push-rod pocket, and the con rod bearings were not that great looking, although the surfaces of the bearing and crankshaft was still smooth.
I'm so stoked for the 3800 big bang! 😎
Love your work, these engines are so underrated,They're capable of alot more than people think.good to see someone pushing it to find weakness, stavjet in Aus done a 10 sec quarter with one of these
There’s a couple in the 8 sec range here now 🤘🏻 lagsux and jetv6, plus Ethel and Ecojet are coming soon both with 12-1300hp each
Far off from getting this under way Richard? Keen to see! The piston crowns normally come off first. I'm keen to see how far you can get before it happens, if it even happens.
Thanks for covering the 3800 platform. Love these and the M90 4.3 videos.
I was going to say .012"
Hard to tell.
When I did my 4.8 one of the rings was way tight .015", so it's a great idea to gap them if you're running boost
Thanks! Sorry I’m late. Been busy with the holidays and all. I’ll be sure and take notes.
I'm so stoked to see what this thing can make!
The 7.3 Diesel that I worked on that come in the International 5 Ton box Truck when new would seize the engine from no oil pressure because the oil pump pickup would be full of silicone sealant from the factory!!
These things used to smoke the mustangs of the same generation just like the sho Taurus from olden times. I’d love to see a side by side 3800 vs ls4 build but with all the 5.3 stuff Richard has already done I can kinda get an idea of how it will go.
Woot woot. Been waiting for this one so i know when to stop with my own. This vid is handy to see what candy is in the pinata before the party.
I’m saying 1200+ HP. Can’t wait!
ohh i been waiting so long for this :)
I had a 01 regal with the L67 with a gen5 Ran out of fuel at 2.9 pulley and big green injector that thing made 330 on a good day but would whoop up on stockish new 5.0 mustangs. And wasn’t bad to daily
Cool stuff...
I was a bit supervised stock ring gap was that wide
I guessed 18 for the gap.
Also the stain on the shorts at bench level I completely understand.
👍💪 This gonna be good!!!!
Been waiting, he'll yeah!!!
I usually go a touch more gap than that and open up the 2nd ring on these for sbe.. i had one make 713wheel hp through a glide recently so ill be keen to see how this one goes for you 😊
hell yea super keen to see this go I'm guessing it'll get close to 900hp
Cool To See What Existing Ring Gap Was. Spec For The Top Ring Factory Is A Range Which Is .010-.018". The Second Ring Was In Spec Which Is .023-.033"
3800 LFG!!! TEAM CAMARO !!!🐢💯x💯
It's going to make all of it!
Hmmmm… running the ring grinder next to rod/piston assemblies should make for a very big bang.
That's pretty cool I'm still driving a old GTP it's my work car 230k miles had it nearly 20 years and still running good.I allways wonder what would happen if I swap to a smaller pulley how that would affect the factory pcm.I really haven't studied it a lot it's just a beater keep miles off my toys.I definitely interested in seeing how much power it can make now don't be making it do more than my supercharger sbf🤣
You have to push the ring a bit deeper for messurement. in the current area the rings never go so you can not account for wear. My 2 Cens
just a photo-it is measured deeper
Man, that sure is a nice ring gap grinder....
still waiting on this
Richard, do you have an f body intake? I have 2 here on the shelf, I'd gladly mail one to you if you need one for testing
Cheers from Australia, those 3.8’s were very popular in our Holden Commodores over here. Our bogans love them. So my question is: how is it going to ‘Mang’ (Limiter Bash) ?
Hi richard how much gap you add for second ring?
Burning oil is better than butting rings.
Even the 4.3 always has copper showing on the cam bearings. I dunno, is this a factory feature?
You can go a lot wider on the gap without measurable loss.
What happened to the 3800 big bang, I am currently building a sleeper series 3 lesabre with an hx35 turbo and would love to see results
What about putting one on a 4.3
I would send you my ported lower I have that's just been on the shelf, but it's for the n/a 3800 😅
im green and after cleaning my deck with Razor blade. I could still see vary vary thin bits hear and there of old head gasket. Not knowing better, i used one of those red Gasket remover disk on a drill. I didn't get carried away. No Gallging, you think it will leak for sure? Or maybe. Guess ill find out in tomorrow All fun and games till its your daily. I need a Richard emergency hot line. Lol- Ouch
it will be fine
Connecting rods. Always the rods
I guess it’s gonna break on those rod journals
It’s the rods it’s always the rods
ZZP makes rods for these. The rods don’t last with lots of torque.
.007 for every inch of bore. Bigger on the second ring. Really not much different to a boosted 5.3. Been looking forward to seeing this test! Been racing these engines for 15 years. Great engines.
I normally go more than that even, to big isn't an issue not enough always sucks 😅
Guesses on how far he will get? I aint seen how much cam he has so hard to tell. They love big duration. I recon the piston tops will come off around 800-900. The rest is good for over 1k as we know. @cornfedboost
Bummer. Thats An Early L67 With The "Weaker" Rods. The 2004+ L67 Have The L32 Rods. Some L67s Like My 04 Monte Had The Updated Rods From Factory. Still Hyped For A Big Bang!
If you’re planning on running more boost on an already boosted factory engine, should you increase ring gap? Is there a spec for how much ring gap per bore size?
we run .0065 per 1 inch of bore on high boost stuff
If adding ring gap to a non oil burning, no audible issues, good running motor, what do you consider re-useable or likely to get away with? Bearings, bolts/nuts, gaskets etc. I have a great running 3rd gen Coyote F150 with some Whipple boost, and considering adding ring gap to the motor while the 10 speed transmission is out to be toughened for more boost. I've gotten away with reusing many TTY bolts for timing covers, dampener bolts, timing chain components to this day with the Coyotes in 2 vehicles, and was wondering what you'd replace on a job like this.
WE REUSE EVERYTHING ON THE JUNYARD MOTORS, EXCEPT HEAD BOLTS AND HEAD GASKETS. I PUT HEAD STUDS AND NEW GASKETS
Thank you!

Is it the same formula for the second ring? Getting ready to turbo my Suzuki G13 engine.
same
Wish you tested your hand ported heads with the supercharger to see if it's even worth doing.
I have hand ported 3800 heads-they do add power
Have you ever done a before and after test with the m90? I remember watching you port a single cylinder and flow testing.
Where did you get the ring cutter from
total seal but summit has them too
you voted for this pal
Would " zero gap" second rings help with power? Blowby? Etc? Or are they just marketing?
we don't use them with boost
892hp before rapid catastrophic disassembly
👍💪
QUESTIONS -
SERIES 2 BETTER THAN THE 3
RUNNING THE BALANANCE SHAFT
WHAT INTAKE ARE YOU RUNNING
IM THINKING 750 TO 900. YOUR THOUGHTS
running the ported blower lower intake ported with a 90-degree elbow and 105mm throttle body with Super Richie adapter plate
That ring gap grinder cost like 2-3 53’s 😂 you can get it done with a file if your careful
I've done plenty with a file and vice or even whizzy wheel (be careful)
Is the gap clearance the same for nitrous as for boosted engines
yes-we run .019-.020
I honestly think that 3800 will hit 700+ before it pops
Are you willing to sell this motor after you are done, if it does not break? I have a 2003 Buick park avenue I would love to swap this in.
the idea is to actually see what breaks-but it can easily be duplicated-that's why I do the videos
@@richardholdener1727 i completely understand why you do the videos and i am a fan regardless! i dont have the tools at the moment so i figured it would be more price effective to try and buy your engine and pay my pal to swap it in. nonetheless i want to see what it can handle!!
What is the downside of making the gap too big?
Blow by & oil consumption
RICHARD CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON THE GEARBOXLESS SPEEDMASTER79 P2 CENTRIFUGAL SUPERCHARGER??? $625 FOR 22LBS OF BOOST SUPPOSEDLY
the boost potential would be a function of the motor you apply it too-boost is not universal for all motors
.018
Did you do a big bang for the k series?
not yet
897 HP before a rod breaks
very specific-I like it
I was waiting to see if you slipped and ended up with one at like 0.040
you can't really slip-hard to do that with a dial
1mm done that before and it ran fine! It’s goin to close up at 25psi boost anyway lol
@richardholdener1727 I meant intentionally "slip" just to get all the people that think you would end up with 50psi in that hole because of it going.
@needmoreboost6369 did that on a g10 suzuki 0.034 in the first hole, then was like may as well make them match. It was my first time gapping rings.
I've got close to .040 thou in an l67 ( one of these motors right here. )
When over 15 psi of boost hastings said add this much.
200hp shot of nitrous add this much.
So I just added the difference together from stock and said yeah that should do it if she ever see's a moon tune 😂
As someone that's pulled a ring land because I'm pretty sure they butted on too much nitrous when I was a kid.
I always add more gap for possible future boredom lol.
Wait. You aren't measuring them in thier respective bores? I mean in my world the bores are a, b and c sized in a factory motor, plus uneven wear is possible. Don't you really want to measure each one where it's going to live ?
guess what happens if every ring measures the same gap? Plus, we don't really care about a variation of .001-.002 on this motor
@@richardholdener1727 yes I get that but you are showing "how to ring gap". Most people arent doing what you are doing and this is a very big operation for them. Actually doing it correctly is probably a good idea. All you needed to do was say" you should check your ring gap with the rings in the correct holes".
I could have swore I hurd him Mention it.
0.018” ,edit no where near it lol
