I bought one of these new in September 2022 and promptly returned it a month later. My config was very similar to this one in the video, I had the i7-1260P which is the non-vPro variant, 16GB soldered RAM, 512GB SSD, and the Nvidia T550 4GB GPU option. I hated it. Even doing basic tasks this laptop would run incredibly hot, and while this is to be expected from a 14" laptop with a GPU, I wasn't even using the GPU and noticed how hot and how much this machine throttled, this was all the CPU's fault. The battery life was also incredibly short, maxing out at only two and a half hours if you are lucky. This is why I returned it and went with another laptop instead despite actually really liking the feel and build quality of the machine, the bad thermals and horrific battery life ruined it. The Intel 12th-gen mobile processors, especially the P variants are a buggy and inefficient chipset design, all the ones I've encountered run hot as the sun and throttle like crazy. I've used the same chip in an X1 Yoga Gen 7 and the X1 Carbon Gen 10 which both had similar issues. In fact, my current work issued laptop is actually a T14s Gen 3 with the i5-1240P CPU and it behaves identical to the 1260P in the P14s and the X1 laptops, it runs very hot and also has issues with not going into sleep mode properly. My job is as one of the IT admins for my company, and we manage a fleet of hundreds of this config of T14s Gen 3 and they're all exactly the same, they all run hot, they all have ~2-ish hour battery life, and every user that has one has made complaints about both of these issues in addition to performance being horrible unless you stick the laptop into Windows "Best Performance" mode, laptops not going to sleep, and of course the typical issue of the USB-C ports breaking. I even had one user do a forced BIOS update via Lenovo Vantage which bricked their laptop. It's a shame these have been a terrible experience because other than the issues I've mentioned above, they're actually quite nice, they feel solid, have excellent keyboards, you can option in a nice screen and I/O is decent for a modern laptop. This is why I suggest getting the AMD variant of the P14s Gen 3 or any of the 2022 generation ThinkPads if you have the option to do so. I now use the Z13 Gen 1 as my personal laptop with the Ryzen 6850U and it's excellent, has none of these issues I mentioned above, so if you can find the P14s Gen 3 with a 6850U, it's worth it, though keep in mind the AMD versions all have soldered RAM, but thankfully they all start 16GB minimum rather than the Intel one having an 8GB option.
Thanks for sharing your experience. That must be frustrating to have them perform that way in your environment. This one has behaved rather well. Perhaps that wack it took on the top case helped it behave. 😂
Crap like this is one of the big reasons why I don't chase the latest models besides the usual depreciation that said your experience with this model is very typical of laptop design for the past decade and change that being thin and hot throttle a lot. I like thicker laptops as they usually have better thermal performance and allow for upgrades beyond just the ram or a single nvme drive etc.
This is my current laptop for work. It does have a strong build outside: I have a little crack on the side that happened when it flew out of my bag once. I am not crazy about the key travel on these new TPs and the screen is not as sharp as my older one, but it's OK. The battery life is ~4 hours for me running Ubuntu.
I had the 1260P model and I was very disappointed with it. The build quality was noticeable worse than my T480 at the time; the keyboard was also a downgrade; only only sensible panel choice was the 400nit panel, but I really wanted something brighter or a high refresh rate option.I ended up going with HP and still use my ElibeBook 845 G10 which has much better build quality with a nice glass trackpad. Although I miss the trackpoint at times. I really hope Lenovo will improve the ThinkPad lineup, but honestly they just get more plasticky as time goes on...
Interesting. I hadn't noticed any significant changes to the build quality. Key travel has been reduced over the yard but that isn't the only factor into how a keyboard feels. Glad you found something that works for you, that's the important thing.
@@LaptopRetrospective Hopefully I will be able to get my hands on one of the newer P-Series machines to see if anything has improved... I have been using ThinkPads for over 10 years now as my personal machines. It's just very sad to see a slow decline in all aspects of the laptop when you know how subjectively good these laptops were back in the day ;-)
@diet_lemonade shame that has been your experience. Granted I haven't used many workstation machines so that could be the difference but I'm still pretty happy with the units I daily drive.

@ lol, I wonder if the 1280P is a better chip, none of the configs I tried had that one, only the 1240P and 1260P so that could be a factor.
@JackStavris I'll have to keep my eye out for the CPUs you mentioned.

@MrKillswitch88 what would you consider the most modern upgradable laptop? 🤔

Glad to hear it survived. Odd about the not so great battery life running Ubuntu.
good vid as always
Thanks!
It's a good laptop.
If I needed the power, it would be tempting but realistically I don't need this much on the go.

I like this Video :D
👍
Does the P14s G2 support an m2 ssd at the wwan slot? (I can not manage to find a suitable model) Best regards!
I cannot find anyone on Reddit having success with putting in a drive in that slot. Lots of attempts, but no concrete path to success.
