HotShots has a quieter idle than Amsoil in my L5P. Felt smoother in daily driving too. I really like their products
Run it! I’m interested in the results.
For your testing purposes I would say try it and as always send out the used oil sample although myself I would not use it based on its lack of being certified and concerned about any warranty issue that may arise. What actually has me more concerned although I believe you have been sending out oil samples and that is the 7000+ mile oil change interval and potential long term issues that "may" rear its head for those that plan on a long term purchase. But again having said all that, this is a testing channel after all ... somebody has to stick their neck out to conduct the experiments !
Give it a shot
I bought a case of Dextros D from the dealership I bought my truck from.
Run it and test it.
run it !
Sure try it. I ran Mobil 1 with FR3 seemed to work great. But then I saw Motor Oil Geek trash it so I changed back to just Mobil 1
Be the guinea pig. Run it
Good old 0w20 Dexos-D oil. The bane of many people's existence with this truck. Sometimes takes me a few tries around my city to get the oil I need for my 2022 LTD/RST
many folks are using the mobil now that's readily available.
Where did you get your magnetic drain plug from? And also, I am thinking about putting that catch cam on my 3.0 as well. I do not like all getting into the intake, I even run a catch can of all of my gasoline engines! Thanks for all the hard work you put into research to benefit your viewers!
Thanks for the kind words ! I have links in the description for the various items I use/recommend/tested.
Love Amsoil but Hot Shots has been doing good stuff for diesels for years. Give it a try and do some tests.
I definitely like their fuel treatments.
I wouldn’t touch the stuff , until after the warranty is up. Why mess with it and if there is an engine issue, Chevy would say show me the receipts and that’s when they deny you. Why take the chance. But ultimately it’s up to you the owner. Good luck.
lol, @hochhaul posts an incorrect opposing comment then deletes it. No this oil is not Dexos D certified. I suggest you play the video again and listen closely around the 38 second mark. “Meets” is not the same as certified.
I started out using AC DELCO oil but then switched to the MOBIL1 ESP X2 because it had 30% PAO. An oil analysis showed only a very slight amount of soot and fuel dilution all well within limits after 5000 miles. If you use the HS oil send both a virgin and used sample for analysis. Personally, I would not trust a company that just makes just a few select oils. I wonder what Lake Speed or Bob the Oil guy would think about this new oil from HS. The total base number of the Mobil 1 is 8.9 while the HS oil is 6.8.
I wasn't able to find the TBN for the Mobil 1 esp that you show. I did see the Hotshots at 6.8 and the amsoil at 7.1, though.
@@DemonWorks Google search Mobil 1 esp x2 0w-20 total base number and you will see several pages of oil properties. The TBN is towards the bottom.
You’ve already purchased it, so you’re in it now! I’m super curious about the oil test results after you use it. Hot Shots claims great things, so are the results any different than AC Delco?
Love your channel, btw.
You're right ! and I will pour it in ! Thanks for the ind words !
There is a 2.7 gas turbo, it’s in the canyon/Colorado and in some of the 1500’s
Correct, However, it’s not a Duramax as labeled on the bottle and that’s all I was trying to point out. The 2.7 also calls for 5w30 and that would need a gasoline specific oil as the additive packages are different for diesels. The 2.8 Duramax also calls for 5w30, but gm is now saying the dexos d will be the universal certification for the small diesels.
Do you have to run more oil to accommodate for the larger size oil filter from ppe? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
Not a dumb question, yes, it will need a little bit more engine oil - i believe it's just about .3 qt extra. Just verify on the dipstick that the oil is always within the crosshatch area. The engine needs to have been off for at least 15 minutes before checking oil, the owners manual suggests 2 hours sitting time.
I am interested in how it works. I picked up my 2024 3.0 in Feb and have almost 7900 miles on it. I was running Hot Shots EDT for the first 5000 miles and was in 150 - 200 mile range for regens and when I stopped using the EDT the regens went gradually made it up the 380 miles (per my iDash) but I was making some long highway trips. Now that I am back to normal driving I am creeping back down to the 200 mile range. So I dont think it was the EDT and I am curious about the oil because I only have one more free dealership oil cahnge left
Long road trips will extend the regen cycles as will towing. Are you doing a lot of around town driving? that seems to get the soot level up the quickest.
I mean I’m interested in how it performs, however I won’t use anything other than dexos-d. I’ve got enough ac delco for another change and then I might go to Mobil 1…
But I’ve got a tiny pinhole leak and I’m going to have to drop my oil pan again and redo my rtv. I changed the oil pan out at about 500 miles and I’m not leaking enough to lose any noticeable oil, but the bottom of the pan does get a coating on it, and I lose two or three drops every time I park. It irritates me so I’m waiting to get to 5k miles and take everything back apart again.
I've had an oil leak since day one with this truck, i'm too lazy to fix it though, other projects...
I’m interested in seeing what more oil analysis data says.
Been using Castrol edge turbo diesel 0W20 DEXOS D, I’ve noticed my oil life increased and I’m tempted to send off an analysis.
I got 4600 miles out of Amsoil at 26% oil life remaining.
I have 3700 miles on the castrol and 68% life remaining.
I have not changed filter type, driving style, or ambient air temperatures. What I’m thinking is the additive and base stocks are completely different. As a full synthetic Amsoil is a PAO base stock with a high amount of additives that “shear off”
Not much is available on the castrol edge, but it is a proprietary blend of base stocks including some PAO and uses less additives. Hot shots engine oil looks very similar to this, I’m interested to see actual test data.
Food for thought on oil, however non of this matters if you don’t change it. I’m going to stick to 5k intervals with filter to play it safe
I’m going to be doing 5k changes also. Have you heard of insane diesel? I’m trying to find somebody who knows something about the supplemental filter they offer.
@@Gameplayer70
Haven’t heard of it. I’ve used various products through the years, every engine is different based on its bearing clearances, ring gaps, cam phasers, etc etc. what matters most is finding the right oil for the right vehicle.
In the built 14 wrx I have I’ve learned redline 5w40 performs the best with data to prove it.
Wife’s outback? 0w20 Mobil, Ford 6.7 shell rotella or valvoline premium blue 5w40
If I can find the spec sheets for bearing clearances I’ll base oil decisions around that. Now being anything forced induction I like to see high TBN, High Flash point, and higher shear stability.
Talking to a lead engineer on the LZ0 these engine are TIGHT!!!!! Very very tight clearances and not a lot of room for error, I’m tempted to stay away from anything with high amounts of additives due to the possibility of the oil “foaming” with these tight clearances.
I've been curious about the castrol edge, they finally got it locally so I can try it out. good to hear you have had good results with it.
Separate question, catch can recommendation for Duramax 3.0 LZO.
currently there is just one available to us. Expect the PPE catch can later this year. th-cam.com/video/n4IDO3EqJCM/w-d-xo.html
Off topic . Where did you get the magnetic drain plug ?
I got it off amazon. i just added the link to the description, I just want to note that I have not personally tried it yet. amzn.to/4arABqc
nothing better than amsoil for your diesel
Agree, I run Amsoil in everything I own.
Yep, I’ll stick with amsoil
Yup same! I run amsoil in my 6.0 powerstoke and 3.0 duramax. I also run the ppe oil filter on my duramax
I do same in my 3.0dm 👍@@chrisgarcia9711
Not to be a smartass but what are you basing it on? Do you have any side by side sturdies you can direct us to or is this just your experience based on use.
Valvoline just came out with the Dexdos D.
Correct, I haven’t been able to find it though.
@@DemonWorks I was looking for oil at Autoparts and couldn't find any, anywhere. The Valvoline Instant Oil Change centers carry it now.
Have you seen any def level issues in the 24's yet? I just drove from washington to utah to pick up a trailer and on the way back i got def empty message even after filling to full. I swung by a gm dealer group I used to work for a few hundred miles after it started and they reset the level for me but problem came back all the way to washington. One of my techs looked at it, there is a tsb that states check calibration and if updated basicly replace the def tank. I noticed on my idash the def level drops to zero randomly but I also noticed in some of your videos it happens on yours too. He replaced my tank today but still seeing the data drop to 0 randomly. Any thoughts, I really hoping I don't have to wait till I'm pulling the trailer again to find out if it's fixed. GM Employee as well btw. 24 Silverado 1500 ZR2
Sounds like your def issue was resolved but I want to add that I have not seen def tank issues on the 24's and I have verified calibrations in mine as well because mine gives off excessive alerts when towing. That seems to be normal for these trucks and has gotten worse over the years, but it is what it is. To add, when the tank level reads low, it could take quite a bit of driving for it to reset itself, in addition the tank will will always need at least 1 gallon poured in to notice something changed (I added this for others reading since I know you said you filled yours up). The idash gauge does drop to zero often and that has been the case for all of my trucks the idash has gone into.
Hey Greg. I had recently done my first oil analysis on my 21 3.0l (using Mobil1 and a PPE filter) @ 35k. Changed @ roughly 6,000 miles or so and was surprised by the results. They came back saying I had significant fuel dilution with significant amounts of Iron and aluminum. I don't do a whole lot of short trips, but do let the truck idle for roughly 5-10 min in the winter before going to work. I don't have a CEL but haven't checked for any codes yet and the truck has been running great with good mileage (26+ avg). Any thoughts on what might be going on or what you'd do in this situation? Thanks man!
Hey ! that's scary to see stuff like that. i would confirm you ran or are running the mobil 1 esp x2 for diesels and not the gasoline 0w20 variation. Aside from that, I would assume that you may have a fuel injector that is overfuelling which is causing the excessive fuel in the oil. Could also be a cylinder sealing issue but I would think either of these would show an issue that would trigger the check engine light.
@@DemonWorks yeah I've made sure to only use the Dexos D stuff. I'll probably put a few thousand miles on this oil change and get another test done to verify. The lab (Horizon) did have to "find" my sample as well after several weeks had passed and I didn't hear anything, so who knows. May not have even been mine.
@@Boostwerks for sure, I like your thoughts on another test. Especially if there is a chance there was a mixup. Let me know !
You know I roll with Amsoil. I've been wondering if one should run a oil Friction Modifier by ARCHOIL in a LZ0. I know the oil specifications are picky with even the weight. Any experiences from anyone & would this void factory warranty????
You don’t have a powerstroke, so I would advise against that oil additive.
Mixing an additive with an oil could cause negative effects as different chemicals react differently. If you run Amsoil but really want to run some kind of additive, it should be one that Amsoil says is safe with their oil.
@@DemonWorks Thanks Brother 😎👍
I'm always afraid that if it doesn't have actual DexosD certification, GM won't honour the warranty. ACDelco for me.
I think they have a 2.7 in South America no?
not that I am aware of
Is it on GMs DEXOS D oil approved list
It would have to be if they're putting DexosD on the bottle. Can't do that without paying the licensing fee for it.
It is not on the DexosD List ! They are following the Amsoil game and claiming it meets it.
Run it
Run
as in run away or run it?
I'm not impressed with anything HotShot. Personally I'm sticking with products that meet the requirements, like ACDelco, Mobil 1 DexosD.
I'm of the opinion, if they will not meet the requirements or at least show their supporting data, that they are using us, the paying public to be their test ground at our expense.
Your truck, do as you wish. Just not for me.
Hotshots does not have a DEF additive I assume you’re talking about something else?
@@DFB-1990 You are correct. My mistake. It was Rislone that has the DEF additive.
the AC Delco is oxidated and of course it will be "thicker" than virgin oil.
unfounded speculation, unfortunately. If we were to assume all used oil is oxidated and therefore "thicker" than virgin oil then the oil samples of the amsoil would show the same, yet in the info provided, the amsoil is thinner than what it started with, per their specs and test reports.
@@DemonWorks unfounded? kid I've read UOA's long before you played vroom vroom trucks in the sandbox. AC Delco DEXOS D usually starts close to 8cst then shears to around a 7-7.5cst in about 3-4K miles of use then starts to oxidize from there. Amsoil likes to advertise itself as long drain lubericant and it is blended at the higher end of the SAE Grade and has more antioxidants and a bit more Group IV/V blends to help extend its stability. XOM flagship is of course Mobil One and it will be slightly superior to its 3rd party blend AC Delco. It's 7.6-8cst may be the slightest bit "thinner" than AC Delco but it's literally less than a human hair difference in width. Mobil One will be more shear and oxidation stable than AC Delco and will match or exceed it in HTHS.
@@davidporter7051I stand by what I said. Sorry you got so fired up.
@@DemonWorks it's ok you are a kid.
@@davidporter7051 I hope you get over this trauma you are working through, maybe some time off the internet for a little bit.
If there is a warranty issues, don’t use it. You should know better 😂😂😂
What about sticition eliminator stuff??? Should I be using that in my diesel???
Mr. Byrd ! No stiction eliminator, that's for powerstroke problems !
@@DemonWorks I would like to talk with you about the Def thing and how my 2500 seems to react to different driving modes…
Trailer mode and Engine breaking enabled
Castrol or Delco for long intervals . I would not use a pyramid scheme oil .
I'm not a believer of long intervals and have been unable to find the dexos 0w20 for the diesels. As far as pyramid scheme oils, we should clarify that comment is likely directed at the amsoil pay to subscribe to buy and have a dealer system.
Use 5 w30
Why would I do that?
DEXOS D oil is available at Walmart there is no reason to use a non certified oil
many people don't shop at walmart, but I can see what you are saying. Even though the mobil is showing to be the thinnest of the 0w20 oils, I still prefer the AC Delco 0w20,
@@DemonWorks it's available at AutoZone, Advance Auto, Amazon, Dealerships, Rock Auto. It has become available at a lot more retailers now than ever before. The difference between AC Delco and Mobil One is non-existent to the engine and Exxon Mobil will not blend a 3rd party product to be a "better" blend than Mobil One. One really can't go wrong with using either.
I’m hearing guys are running 0w40 to stop oil consumption
I haven't heard that but if someone has a consumption problem they should probably look into getting it fixed.
@@DemonWorks ha no doubt. I’m picking up a new zr2 3.0 tomorrow
@@TheREALLibertyOrDeath that's awesome !!! congrats !!!
Ac delco straight garbage. Done real world tests on a real heavy duty truck. In real world conditions. 8-12 hour days driving in all conditions especially on the 100 degree days. I used to think running oem oil was better then anything out there… until I started doing my own tests.
Simple test run Ac delco 8 hours a day on a hot day. Run it for 4-5 days or until you reach 2000 miles in hot heavy load conditions. Ac delco will break down at 2000 miles ( 2000 miles 80-90 -100 degree weather, heavy load) almost all other oils will break down at 2k miles or less.
Now run amsoil signature series in the same conditions…. You can't even compare the two. You can do all the tests you want and get all the paperwork you want. YOU WILL feel the difference.
Those who drive in heavy conditions and care about there truck will feel the difference. With the oem oil… at 2k miles you start feeling the engine vibrating more. Once the day reaches 80-100 degrees the engine starts feeling like its having full metal to metal contact and the engine feels like there's a loss of pressure and feels ruff. You go and check the oil and the oil looks just fine until you run it.
Again just try amsoil signature series… all those issues gone… very little to no heavy vibrations of metal to metal contact. There oil can withstand high heat and degrades extremely slow I unlike oem oil.
I drive day in and day out. It took me months and multiple oil changes of different brands till I reached amsoil. A soil was the only one that truly does what it says.
Ain't no oil analysis gonna tell you that. Real world experience will. Ain't no mechanic who spends most his time in a shop and does not actually drive for a living gonna tell you that. They make money adding there tax on the oem shit.. I know this because my mechanic told me straight up.
Now I don't know shit about hotshot secrets but I'll give it a look.
I wish amsoil had a signature series oil that meets dexosD specs, but they don’t and after multiple calls they don’t plan on making one. They just have their standard range stuff. The reason the signature series is so great is because it’s 100% PAO base, that’s why it doesn’t break down as readily as a group II or group III base oil as you mention. (Although Mobile is rumored to be a PAO base, I haven’t been able to find documentation supporting that.)
Unfortunately the only oil amsoil offers for the 3.0 is a group iii base oil. But you still get their great additive package which is better than most other oils.
you said it best yourself in one of your videos th-cam.com/video/4cP2ilQ_G74/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BR-uxgSFGAk6pODp&t=84
clearance on this 3.0L motor is so very little compared to other motors so the oil needs to be superthin to get in there and work
i just changed my oil on tuesday with mobil1 because it is on the approved list and amsoil is not but also saved $40 over amsoil and ppe filter
i would think the hotshots is good also to run but wish it was on the approved list i run their everyday treatment in my fuel each fill
