    I have been driving the 2017 model Corolla Hybrid for the past 9 months now and so far it has saved me in $2200 in fuel per year based on my normal daily driving habits. It is amazing what the hybrids can do. The Corolla still has phenomenal power when you need it but having the hybrid changes your driving style and makes you think more like you are driving a manual. I find I am looking ahead now and if I see the traffic lights go red I let the car coast to a stop and it charges the battery and does not use fuel. Similar to driving a manual where you slow down through the gears to avoid a 1st gear start off and coast along before coming to a complete stop. On most tanks I estimate I can get over 1000km to 45L. I normally fill up around 925km and put about 41L in the tank.

      Thanks, Tony! Great to hear from an owner. I think there is plenty of potential in the hybrid tech, and some real cost savings if you really embrace the driving style, like you are doing. It would be good to see the more sophisticated 2.0L hybrid brought down here for this new Corolla, though.

    I have had My 2019 Toyota Hatchback for 6 moths now and I Love this car. I raced a 280 z for 10 years and this car gives me lots of driving enjoyment when I get on it, believe me it is as fast as anyone needs. The planted feel of the car is outstanding and the brakes are very impressive. With the CVT transmission you can downshift the car anytime and it remains in the gear like a manual. I enjoy the interior and entertainment system very much.

    I like how Toyota took the risk with their design, it paid off.

      Took a risk? Nice interior and exterior, but without a 1.6 liter turbo engine, they're selling the sizzle and not the steak.

      I'm coming from a Scion 2008 XD. Orange signature series. And when I look at the orange option you can really tell that Scions were basically corollas. I'm thinking of either a 2019 Civic hatchback or this 2019 Corolla hatchback. But this is a sporty looking model. Going from 128HP to 168HP will feel nice as well.

    Best car ever!! Indestructible!! I own one from 2005, still perfect after all the years and 300000 kms done. Not a single problem. BTW, still haven't had to change the original clutch, well that's reliability, no Golfer can say that.

    I have been driving the 2019 Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport Auto CVT 2.0 Litre petrol for a month. I agree with this review. Its handling, looks and power and smooth drive are great and it could have more room in the back. It also consume 8L of petrol per 100 km in the city which is OK. There is a delay when you put your foot down on the accelerator crossing intersections. Also there is no place to put my smartphone unlike the Yaris, which has a cupholder. When the petrol is low it removes all the info on the screen in front of you. Its uses a soft permanently compressable foam inside which is great if you bump your head, but not so great when you put things in the boot.

    Toyota is reliable but with less money you can get Kia Cerato GT, which has everything. From turbo engine to posh interior with all the latest technology, latest safety features, bigger boot space. And it's backed with 7 year unlimited km warranty. Please let me know would Cerato stand against Corolla in your opinion?

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a good point. Cerato GT is brand new and I’ll have a drive of it soon but from early reports it sounds like a cracking hatch. Given the Corolla doesn’t have a warm or hot engine (yet), if you’re interested in performance you’re better off with an i30 N-Line (or perhaps the Cerato GT with which it shares an engine - I just haven’t driven the Kia yet)

    I guess my used Golf 7 will look upmarket for good while to come. And it amazes me, especially when you consider it went in production in 2012.
    The competition just recently caught up to the Golfs' interior quality. The Practicality is still unmatched.

    I had the last model Corolla hatch, and now have this one. Both had/have CVT auto box. They have removed the "ash tray" / coin box on the drivers side on the dash. They have removed the sun glasses compartment above your head, next to the interior lights. They have removed the extra top centre console small compartment for the mobile phone. They have removed the extra cigarette lighter outlet to the rear seats. (I used it for the dash cam power). The rear door latch is no longer half way up the door, but at the bottom - must now bend down to unlatch it. Less space (LESS! And the car is supposed to be larger?) in the rear - our bags could sit on their side and still close the rear hatch. They can't now. Auto CVT gearbox is not as smooth as the last one. Lots of gimmicky things like side-radar that is sooo off-putting to use. It slightly fights you as you steer. Enough buttons and menus to sink a battleship, but no maps. Doesn't feel more powerful at all, in spite of 200cc extra engine capacity. While it is a nice car, I am not convinced that it is as good as hyped. ...little things.

    20 years ago noone of our german brands could deliver a Hybrid and all cheated their Diesel up. But nowadays you can buy from every german brand a Plug In Hybrid with 40-50km pure electric drive and Toyota did not not offer a single one !! Lexus is even more in a deep struggle because they are expensive and now their Hybrids are only average in fuel consumption and have less performance ! Worst of all for LExus/Toyota is that quality and reliability do not count that much anymore .....cars become like Handy´s ; every 2-3years get the newest model or you cant look into your neighbours eyes :-) !

    Great review for a great car looking car, Tom. Interesting how you found rear headroom adequate while other reviewers have found it lacking. I'll have to check it out. It's amazing how the benchmark is still the Golf even though it's near the end of its life cycle.

    • @chasingcars

    I just bought the ZR but wont get it till August?
    Like all cars, non are perfect.
    Certainly you dont buy a small car for rear passenger comfort.
    Corolla is the cheapest to service at $175 per service.
    I drove the Kia Cerato GT.
    A great car with much more power and max toque from 1500 to 4500RPM?
    Brilliant, but the big downside is to Service the Toyota over 5 years costs $875 the Cerato costs $3250 .
    Power is not that importanr to me and the Corolla meets all my needs.
    Yesthe boot space is not good for sure

    Thanks again for a great review Tom. Can you advise:
    1. What the 6 speed manual in this model of Corolla feels like to drive?
    2. When will you be doing a comparison (preferably manual but understandable if not) with the other cars in this small car segment?
    3. Will you be doing a Focus RS review at all?

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks David. See answers:
      1. Very good. It’s a sweet pairing. Just a shame only the base model is offered with the manual, which means your key touch points - gear shifter and steering wheel - are nasty plastic, not leather.
      2. Comparo has been filmed and will be up soon. It was done with an SX auto and five rivals, all auto. Sad but that’s just the way the market is.
      3. Potentially but Ford aren’t easy to get cars out of. Only a limited fleet here in Sydney.

    Great review, Tom! Comparing top trim levels, the dashboard of this car is now my favorite in this class, followed by the Mazda 3. But for the exterior design, the Mazda 3 is still my favorite. I also anticipate the automatic transmission in the Mazda will be more pleasurable than the automatic transmission in this Toyota. Additionally, at least here in the States, the 3 is available with a sunroof, which the Corolla doesn't get, at least at launch.

    Can you import the euro 2.0l hybrid to Australia. Or is there a reason it hasn’t been introduced to Australia?

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't import it yourself, no. The reason is that there are no tax incentives/disincentives for a manufacturer to bring fuel efficient variants here.

    • @tmaintv
      @tmaintv 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chasing Cars I live in the uk but will be moving to oz soon. If I bought the Uk version on release and kept in Uk for 12 months u think I could import it then? It’s just so frustrating they are feature limiting the au version. There’s no good reason for u to not get car play atleast. As it’s one of Australia’s best selling cars u would think they’d prioritise giving u guys the best spec versions 🙄

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Once you accept that people are going to be distracted by technology (which is a given today), it’s better to site that technology in a high mounted screen near the road, rather than force them to look down at their crotch at a mobile phone. That’s what makes the lack of CarPlay particularly galling

    Nickel Hydride batteries in the hybrid, why last century technology?

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mostly because there are no financial/tax incentives to reduce a car's CO2 in Australia - hence, EV and hybrid takeup is very low. If it was cheaper to register a more efficient vehicle, maybe we'd get the Li-Ion version of this car.

    125kw/200nm from a 2L do NOT sound like turbocharged outputs. I have an old 2015 2L turbo engine that makes 170kw/370nm...

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chill out, I meant for people unaccustomed to displacement in this segment, 200Nm sounds more like a small VW TSI turbo engine than an old 170Nm Corolla.

    • @bluesteel7171
      @bluesteel7171 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, when referencing the 2L engine's outputs you said: "those figures kind of sound turbocharged, but they're not" I'm saying they don't. If you'd said they compare favorably with the 1.4L turbocharged VW engine then that would have made a bit more sense.

      Yeah, Corolla and Auris are the same car. Auris is just the European name for Corolla.

    Great review as always! No Apple CarPlay does that mean I can’t pair my iPhone with the infotainment screen? Can I still make Bluetooth phone calls through it? Sorry could be dumb question but I’ll be upgrading my old faithful Mazda metro soon :-)

      No problem Josh - yes, you can still connect your phone with Bluetooth for calls or music streaming. You just can’t see the iPhone apps on screen.

    I’m currently in the market for a car of this class, and it’s not easy deciding on one!
    Would you pick a turbo civic hatchback over this?

    • @wc7484
      @wc7484 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael Lim if you care about turbos then get the civic, but if you just want something good, then you can’t go wrong with the corolla. I recommend you get it used and under 40,000 miles so that way you can get it cheaper

      Michael Lim no problem . Have you decided on which one to get?

    • @michaellim2830
      @michaellim2830 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wedner calix I’ve decided to go with the civic hatch turbo! I really like the corolla, and went to the show room. It drives really well, happy with it. But it’s fatal flaw was the interior and boot space, or the severe lack of it. It’s actually claustrophobic inside, and in the end I couldn’t drive it for the next 5-7 years. Oh well, no car’s perfect :)

    I love the car...but it's a shame that Toyota is still making underpowered cars. Where is my 200+hp and 200+ lb/ft of torque?
    For that kind of money I'd go for a Veloster R-spec. Sure the interior isn't as nice but it'll be more fun and engaging to drive and a better warranty as well.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd be happy even with 250Nm (185 lb/ft). 200Nm (148 lb/ft) in the new 2.0L is an improvement, but because there's no turbo, you still have to really work and rev for it…

  • @oldtimers6460
    @oldtimers6460 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    no tyre on the zr will be a bad mistake .as anyone who drives often and far will know , debris from trucks and rubbish on the road can and does puncture a tyre in the road and side of the tyre making a puncture kit useless.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, it’s a problem. And even for those in town, you have to remember Toyota doesn’t include roadside assist, so you’re on your own if you get a puncture.

    • @patricknl7845
      @patricknl7845 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lack of boot space is one of the few things that's holding me back from buying this car. It's a great and good looking car. But this boot space is ridiculously smal for a family car. And the space for rear passengers isn't that great either. So it's a great car for two people but for more than two passengers i would look for something else.
