    Plain-straight forward review ! No flashy talking and no disrupting music - just focusing on what person needs to know before one wants to get comprehensive information. One thing I wish to see in such review is information, flashing on a side screen - clear coated way - alongside talking general info about specs.

    Am I the only one that prefers the hatchback over the sedan ? 😐 I'll admit the sedan is nice but it's missing the wow factor the hatch gives you. Curious if this car will get a more powerful engine for the refresh. 🤔

      Its most like making more than the advertised 168hp .Theres a few dyno sheets around with one at 164hp to the wheels from DSport magazine and a video on TH-cam of 174hp to the wheels. Figure in drivetrain losses and its probabaly not too far way in power from the camry engine.

      7.5 seconds for the manual by MotorTrend. They have 3 people plus 1 mile above sea level which makes it significantly slower. 7.5 puts it directly in line with previous gen Mazda 3. Heck my Acura TSX with 200 hp 2.5 was 7.4 seconds to 60. It's definitely adequate.

    Love the XSE, but I don't understand why Toyota has a power sun/moonroof available on the XSE sedan but not on the hatch. Why, Toyota? Why?
    Also, I would say that many people, including myself, are not looking for race cars or pure sports cars. A Corolla Hatch is perfectly fine to be a "sporty" car rather than a true sports car. This is a daily driver. Not an autocrosser. And I'm fine with that.

    The time from zero to 60 not only depends on the engine performance and gearing ratios, but also depends on how well you can quickly shift. That's the beauty of driving manual transmission's. It is you who is actually driving by shifting gears. In an automatic, you are not driving, you are only steering it.

    There's one more thing the Itelligent Manual Transmission (IMT) button does: it keeps the cruise control "on" even while you are shifting gears. This is a feature I would use a lot. I.e., when the cruise is set to, say 60, the car tries to get you to your set speed but only the driver can step on the clutch and shift to the next gear. The car and driver "cooperate" (for lack of a better word): the driver shifts the gears and steers; the car does the rest. Other cars with cruise control and manual transmissions simply turn the cruise control "off" as soon as the driver steps on the clutch. This one feature is enough to sell me the car.

      @YearOfTheDog82 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      negative, Kilmer is wrong on this one. The new Corolla iM hatch shares no components with the defunct Matrix, its only similar in concept and dimensions. The new Corolla is built of an entirely new platform (TNGA), has an entirely new engine, transmission, and electronics package, and shares no body panels. About the only thing in common is that they are both offered in red, have four wheels, and seat five.

    I have this exact car but in the CVT. Dont know if it would be necessarily better then the civic hatch. The color really sold me on mine. Also the same spec civic hatch with all the lane trace assist and adaptive cruise is around 29k for the 2018 model year When I bought mine I paid 22,400 for the corolla hatch XSE with the CVT. So maybe dealers are having a tough time selling them because in my state that’s a really good price for the car. My parter lives abroad. If we lived together I would definitely say the space issue may be more of a problem. All you get in the rear is two carry on bags, and it’s a very tight fit. Whenever we are in the US I find myself having to put the rear seats down quite a lot. So if you have a family that’s over two people. This prob is not the car for you. The civic hatch seems to have much more room in that regard. It’s not fast at all but I do think it handles quite well in the mountains. I had more fun driving this car then the civic hatch. Other then that the interior is quite nice for this price point. Wish they would get rid of the piano black interior trim though. Overall I’m very satisfied with the purchase. I always look forward coming home now so I can drive this car. Hopefully the resale value will be good over the next few years. Maybe I will get out of it and go back to a civic.

      Stuff stuff and More stuff I know I know. I live in china most of the year. And my car here is stick shift. It’s horrible for driving in traffic. I thought I would miss the stick with this car and nope completely forgot about it.
      I will say though. Most CVT you drive. The engine will just drone and drone at the same RPM. This car has the simulated gears. Somewhat cool. Idk if the novelty will wear off. It is complete crap for mountain driving though. Even at 5000 RPM. There is hardly any engine breaking what so ever.

    But that being said, the Matrix had a bigger cargo area (almost inbetween a hatch and a wagon) and an AWD option.

    • @sairvinginthestacks
      @sairvinginthestacks 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have Matrix and can confirm with the seats down, it can swallow up a lot of stuff. I put an actual door in it once and didn't even need to pop the back glass open to transport it. Going camping with a friend? It's the perfect size car.
      I have to replace the car in a year or 2, and the only thing that stays smaller from Toyota, but has cargo space is the Prius. The Toyota CH-R just looks wierd.

    I had the last (basic) model Corolla hatch, and now have this one. Both had/have CVT auto box. They have removed the "ash tray" / coin box on the drivers side. They have removed the sun glasses compartment above your head, next to the interior lights. They have removed the extra top centre console small compartment for the mobile phone. They have removed the extra cigarette lighter outlet to the rear seats. (I used it for the dash cam power). The rear door latch is no longer half way up the door, but at the bottom - must now bend down to unlatch it. Auto CVT gearbox is not as smooth as the last one. Lots of gimmicky things like side-radar that is sooo off-putting to use. It slightly fights you as you steer. Enough buttons and menus to sink a battleship, but no maps. Doesn't feel more powerful at all, in spite of 200cc extra engine capacity. While it is a nice car, I am not convinced that it is as good as hyped.

    This stick-shift Corolla Hatchback in blue flame paint is beautiful. Nice review. Regarding the cargo space. The spare tire isn't crowding that area. The Subaru Crosstrek has a spare tire & more cargo space. The hatch area is reduced by the "better than competitors" Multi-Link rear end. I suggest watching the SavageGeese review where they put the car on a lift.

      @@High_Octane Thanks for the suggestion. I normally lease my cars for just 3 years, I don't keep them long term so realibilty isn't a huge concern as most cars don't have major problems until the warranty has already expired. Don't get me wrong the Toyota looks great, but the new Mazda looks like it almost belongs in a different class. I know Mazda isn't a luxury brand but the new Mazda 6 and now the new Mazda 3 definitely look really premium whereas Toyota feels high tech but kind of "Fisher Price".

      The new Supra is 100% BMW that is made by a Canadian owned company in Austria. The same company makes the G Wagon. Nothing about the Supra is Toyota. Toyota and BMW agreed the Supra would only get an automatic. BMW can be had with a manual transmission.

    • @05blkgti
      @05blkgti 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Redskins Pride WGIL Not quite 100% BMW but definitely 75%. The engine is tuned differently and the chassis and suspension dynamics are totally different than the BMW Z4. Obviously the body is Toyota. So to say that nothing is Toyota is completely false.
      That being said, I do agree that it is plausible that BMW might have contracted Toyota to not produce the manual because they didn’t want to have the Supra be a direct competitor to the Z4 ( which is asinine because most who drive BMWs drive automatics).
      That was a business decision that Toyota had to make because the Supra overall was an expensive model to develop and Toyota for some reason just doesn’t like to play in that “sports car” market but saw an opportunity to please a car culture that wanted to see it come back. What confuses me is Toyota knew that the people who would buy this car were those who think it’s cool(automatics) and those who appreciate a great car like the previous model(manual).
      The only Toyota that is a true sports car built and developed in japan at this point in time is the AWD GR Yaris. Go figure and we’ll never see it in the states.
