    I had a 2017 C-HR hybrid 1.8 for 18 months and enjoyed it, but recently replaced it with a 2019 Corolla 2.0 hybrid estate as needed more space. I test drove the Corolla estate in both 1.8 & 2.0 versions. For me the 2.0 was the choice as it’s just more refined, quiet & certainly quicker. Battery is not under the floor in the estate as mounted to the side so luggage capacity not reduced like it is in the hatchback.

    @Autogefühl
    Please let Toyota know that consumers in the USA WANT the option of
    the Touring Sport Wagon version of the Corolla! There is definitely a market for a small practical wagon here. Thanks for all your work, and efforts. Appreciated!

      @szokuspokus
      I realize that but then again we don't get most A class cars in the USA
      only a few like the Smart Car, Fiat 500. Instead we have hordes of people buying huge pick up trucks and they don't even really utilize them for the purpose they were designed. The worst part is that if you drive a normal sized vehicle you can't even see over or past these huge behemoths while making turns at intersections, ect.

    • @Emissary52
      @Emissary52 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      watershed44 - I second your opinion. The Europeans have some really nice wagons to choose from. Here in the U.S., we'll never get the Corolla wagon. Toyota expects us all to buy RAV4s, on which, they make more money. The USA is abandoning the car. SUVs for everyone! It's a shame!

    There is no need to floor the gas pedal with a CVT, that's old-school driving, use the tachometer, keep the revs to max torque-rev to get max acceleration, than it doesn't sound like an aeroplane ready for take-off 😁

      blacknester all Toyota hybrids have a CVT. It’s a bit different from others as it has a physical first gear to get going without the lag but after that it’s all CVT.

    • @cristiansmochina9056
      @cristiansmochina9056 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Grk149 The hybrids don't have a launch gear, they don't need it, the bigger motor handles acceleration with instant torque. The continuous variable transmission is achieved by modulating the power in the smaller motor, so it's even simpler than a manual transmission.

    Thank you for the very comprehensive introduction to this Hat Trick of new Corollas. Ideally we would have seen the 1.2 turbo in action as well but I understand they were not available when this testing event took place. I am also grateful that you really emphasized the practical deficiencies that result from Toyota's 'style' choices with the new hatch. Toyota's dubious decision to use a shorter wheelbase for the hatch is really difficult to grasp as it severely restricts rear passenger space and diminishes ultimate cargo capacity. Surely the Touring Sports has to be the best choice for a happy, long-term ownership experience. On this side of the Atlantic, we are hoping Toyota has the brains to bring us the wagon to complete the full range of consumer choice. Lastly, may I state how refreshing it is to see a taller reviewer for a change. People who are 5 feet 5 inches tall will rarely have an issue with head or leg room. #SaveTheWagon #WeWantWagons

    My wife had a backup call from Toyota for her Aygo (problem with the rear window) and during the repairs she got a Corolla TS 2.0 from the garage and ofcourse I wanted to drive it out of curiosity. My own car is a Mitsubishi Lancer 1.8 Intense with 143 HP and I always liked it very much and never had any problems with it. BUT, when I drove this TS my eyes got opened. I always was afraid of an automatic, but with this TS it felt like as easy as possible, I must admitt, it took my heart. This is a great comparison, and for me the TS is still the absolute winner, love the design but also love how it drives................AND...........comparison......My Mitsubishi 1.8 uses 1 liter of gasoline in 9 km on small roads, the TS uses 0 (NOTHING)!!!.........However, 41.000 euro's here in the Netherlands, that's a lot of money!! Thumbs up and I subscribed!!

    Driving fast on the German motorway.... I had to laugh a lot. When you take the 3 from Arnhem to, say, Stuttgart or even on to München, you are in a constant StauBaustelle-80BeiNässe-LKWStau-Baustelle-Lärmschütz-6%-Zone, and effectively you can "go fast" about 5% of that trip. It's hilarious.
    Compare that to the French Peage, where you can set the clock on 135 in Lille and basically not brake until Bordeaux, and it sure feels like you go faster on any motorway you can humanly find outside of Germany. :)
    That said, nice review. Quite thorough.

Great driving part, commentary and driving, Thomas - many thanks. Like the saloon's bright coloured interior, and much prefer the softer suspension and improved comfort for a family road car.

If I did not buy the grandlandX for my wife, And if I settled on cedan (we only have cedan Corolla sold here in Egypt), the Corolla 2020 will be definitely my choice. Although it is only available here as 1600cc naturally aspirated old engine, but it would be OK since here the heat and dusty roads and extremely heavy traffic would be disanvatage for the new high tech engines and transmissions!

    Toyota did some progress here, interior quality is really surprisingly good. Unfortunately they missed a few points - both displays have major flaws (desigh, functionality, quality), they also went bonkers with pricing - Corolla is one of the most expensive compacts in Europe now. Quality/reliability is also just so-so, paint is very thin and easy to scratch, even the lightest hail will leave marks, rust is an issue, maintenance costs are very high.

    Hey Thomas,
    Great review once again. Especially because I was really looking forward to the reviews of the Toyota Corolla.
    I prefer the stationcar.
    I could have a very good look at the station in the Carexpo in Brussels a month ago en I fell in love with the car.
    Thanks for long and detailed 'movie', en comparing the 2 egines. This really helps people to choose the best kind of configuration that suits them the best.
    Keep Up the good works ( as usual).

    The hatchback from most companies is not for carrying adults in the rear seat. It is considered the more "sporty" design, but has some practicality for carrying stuff, maybe small kids in the back. The Corolla sedan is for people who are afraid of wagons......you see them in parking lots trying to stuff things in the trunk of a sedan, and you think....why didn't you get a wagon or a CUV? The wagon is for folks who are independent thinkers, they just want a practical car that can comfortably carry 4 or 5 people and their luggage. Unfortunately the Touring Sports sacrifices capacity to style and makes the rear too steep of a slope. In the good old days a station wagon had a nearly vertical rear window/door. Somewhere along the history of station wagons it was determined they would sell better if they were called "sport-wagons" and sloped the rear window and door. Even the Prius V had more space than this new Corolla Touring Sports. Nice comprehensive test with a dash of humor. 👍

    "The front is more agressive". Really? What do you want to say with that? Is "agressive" a positive attribute? How come? Or do you mean "sporty" or "impressive", "unique", characteric", "original" ? Let's be careful with words and not make "agressive" a positive thing. The world needs more peace, not agression. Good review, thanks.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not up to me to rate if that’s positive or negative, but this is very common to describe design as aggressive or something but whatever it is just a description of the design language

    • @paulmetdebbie447
      @paulmetdebbie447 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@autogefuehl Something becomes "common" if it is used often. It starts with the designer jargon, than reviewers kick in and copy it without questioning. Agressive means Violent, against enemies, no matter how often it's used it's still an strange description. If it is used to promote a design it is meant to stand for something positive. It is for the reviewer to think for himself if he wants to copy that kind of language without lifting his eyebrow. We don't endorse the use of leather upholstery in car seats either, just because car makers use it a lot and try to make it a common luxury item. This is not only a language thing, but pointing to the evolution of how something or term that is negative, slowly becomes more acceptible by using it with a positive connotation.

    One thing that's maybe really good with this kind of hybrid is that you can use the car to just go to the local shops regularly without harming the petrol engine by using it for too many short trips.

    The hatch design is very similar to a longer Opel Adam from the side and astra from the rear, but it's definetly an improvement over the auris in my opinion! The huge problem is the trunk door design! It doesn't make any sense to have have a fancy design like that in a c segment car at the cost of loosing all the boot capacity. The latter point is the reason I wouldn't consider this car if I was buying one

    Great review as always! Big step up in just about every way for the Corolla compared to the previous generation. Very nice looking car, my only issue is their choice of headlight design on the sedan. Hatch and estate look much better. I think if I had to choose one, I’d probably go for the estate and usually I’m not a fan of estates. But it looks great and obviously much more practical. I’d probably go for the extra power from the 2 litre hybrid too.

    Finally a quality review!
    The new generation Corolla does look aggressively styled, I was looking to sign for the hatch, but the dealership don't offer it here.
    Plus, real performance don't really go well with CVT. I ended up with an Octavia RS245.

      These new toyota's have a physical first gear

    • @Elf1492
      @Elf1492 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, toyota took an unconventional way of implementing a first gear that helps to launch the vehicle from standstill, thus negating one of the downsides of CVT.

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But not in Europe. CVT with the launch gear is available with 2.0 naturally aspirated engine wich Europe will not get in any Toyota.
