Typically I never paid attention to the Corolla but this one is nice! Pretty good value from Toyota. It’s awesome they offer a manual option too, but still super efficient with the CVT. Keep up the good work Forrest!
This video was on my recommended videos. I hadn't seen any of your work before. But I really enjoyed this very thorough and no-nonsense review. I'm looking forward to watching more of you work!
Forrest, one thing you could compare or review which others don’t, is durability and long term reliability. I’m kind of afraid to think about all the electronics just in opening the door, in say, seven years, or that intricate interior. Makes me think a ten year old car is simpler and could actually be a better choice. Really nice review regardless.
Yes! I want one and will probably buy one when my daughter gets my '17 Corolla but I wish that the Corolla hatch had more juice under the hood like the old Xrs engine.
Toyota already has a 2.0 turbo motor that they can pull from the Lexus line ups and shove it in the Corolla. That with a nice tuned suspension will be great. 241hp and 258ftlbs is perfect for this car. And of course, a manual too.
Really detailed walk around. Thank you! The quality of the interior of this Corolla Hatchback looks very solid. I'll probably be testing out cars in the spring, and this is high on the list!
I was so curious to see Toyota Corolla Hatchback review. Finally , I found you and you are in Texas. My first fun car was Scion XB. This one will be my next cutie, sporty, fun to ride in Austin, Texas for sure. We are the Toyota fan!!
I am really liking this car! Impressive styling and efficiency combo. I was really impressed with your wholesale shopping trip and how you packed everything in there! Loved the lighting at night on the car, and the shape of the AC vents and the dash looks really cool. I believe this car is almost the same as the new Lexus UX so maybe on that version they took care of the road noise problem. Can’t wait to see the Audi Etron reveal! 👍🏼👍🏼
Admiral There is a difference between reveal and coming out, which refers to market availability. A reveal can whenever they want it to, but production and launch is more concrete. Spring/Mid 2019 is accurate, with late November 2018 reveal.
Ok. I drive a ‘15 VW GTI. But I gotta say. I’m seriously impressed with this Corolla hatchback. The road noise is a real bummer. But the rest of it honestly really good looking. Great job. If Toyota can pull something like this off with their Corolla... then I can’t wait to see what a company like Mazda offers in a all new/completely modern Mazda3.
Great review! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your content. The Corolla hatch looks like it will meet all of my "fun to drive but reliable" requirements for my next car.
Best in-depth review I’ve seen. Straight to the facts and information I haven’t heard from anyone else. I am glad you showed it at night. It would’ve been even better if you had driven it at night to see how the lights are for visibility, low beam and highbeam, in the city and out. Subscribed.
Great review!! I was deciding between this one and Mazda 3 hatchback. Also I finally found a review that care about how the car look at night!! How the front and taillights look is very important to me. LoL thank you so much!!
Krystal W. You should consider looking into a Mazda 3 Hatchback Grand Touring. The interior is amazing! I have the Touring version. You should also see the headlights and tail lights. 2.5 L engine and I get about 26mpg average. Soul metallic red.
It may never die. I had a 2003 that was bulletproof. Funny thing about those early years is the odometer stops at 299999. I was going to take a picture when it broke 300k but it just stopped. Finally sold it when it needed emissions work and I didn't want to do it. I estimate it was over 320k at that point.
If you want the best Hot Hatch for under 25,000 you can still get the Ford Fiesta ST that is Turbo charged 197 hp & 202 foot pounds of torque, and will literally Blow the doors off that Corolla, they only come in a 6 speed and it’s 300 pounds lighter than the Corolla, plus it handles like a go kart. 26 city 35 highway. It will put the biggest smile on your face. I highly recommend taking this car for a test drive.
A little warning for any new hatchback owners. It is almost deceptive how much they can hold. I caused rear springs to compress too much on hatchbacks I owned (and own), leading to squatting. On my current car, I swapped the rear springs to stronger ones (King Springs), to solve that issue. I really should be buying a pickup truck.... Now, if some company would just make a small pickup (less than 200" long)....
catsspat a hatchback is obviously not going to handle as much as a truck. They were not deceptive. You just assumed a hatchback can withstand weight like a truck.
Apart from the fake exhaust tips, the new Corolla I think is a VERY good looking car, coming from a Honda guy. But that's just my opinion of course. Would really like to see Toyota bring back the XRS.
Ryan Littleton i know, if they made another lift engine it would be amazing. they mad 200 horses in the early 2000's so i could see a 3zz making 220 which would be perfect
Excellent review! I liked when you showed the exterior lights at videos end. However, I would have liked to have seen the in-dash illumination as well! Keep your great videos coming, sir!
Great video and review Forrest! I filmed one of these last week and I must say that it was by far the best driving / performing Corolla I’ve ever been in! I’d be happy using this as a daily. Keep the great content coming man!
This the 2nd review of this Car and both of the reviewer’s have mentioned Road noise. I’ve noticed this is Texas and the other review was from California. Something is up with that, in my opinion, it’s the Tires. I’m on my 4th set of tires on a 2014 Fiesta ST with only 59,000 miles on it. I just put a set of Michelin pilot sport A/S 3+ and just did a 2,000 mile trip to Oregon and there the best tires I have ever had. Fantastic grip, very quiet, and no freeway groove tracking, I highly recommend these tires.
Nice looking yes. I test drove one last week. Not enough leg room. I am 6'1 170 lbs. I sit too low for my comfort and not room for thigh support due to leg length. It was slow and i didnt like it on the highway. Good city car for shorter people.
Thats weird. I test drove it a couple weeks ago. im 6'3, 195lbs and i sat pretty comfortably in there. It's at least roomier than my G35. maybe thats why it felt big to me.
Stauriko the distance from my knees to my waist had little distance for width and length. If they had electric seats then i would be able to tilt seat upwards to relieve the stress on my legs. I prefer electric seats for that reason. Not sure if this car offers electric seats. If so i would give a higher recommendation but not for highway distance.
I got an Toyota Auris Hybrid 2014 (that's what you guys call an Corolla Hatchback) and I'm 6'3" myself. I bought this car especially due to it's abundant leg room! Even if one were 6'6" you'd fit perfectly fine in my car with room to spare! Especially thigh room as it's a really wide seat. I have yet to try out the new 2019 model, but from what you tell us it seems that it's interior-space...shrunk???
+Tom Boyle You do release that manual seats can also be adjusted, right? They can tilt forwards, backwards, move upwards and move down...I assume you don't know how to adjust the seat position...Electric seats are the same as manual except for it using buttons instead of levers to adjust your seating position...I don't care at all if it is a manual seat or electric...
Its for the infinitely more gear ratios that allow for the optimization of power, torque, gas, etc. That's why they 'drone' -- when you accelerate, one strategy is to set your RPM's where the torque is the highest, and as you accelerate you adjust the "gear ratio" so that the RPM's stay in the high torque range. This also allows the manufacturer to use less powerful engines, or even engines that have a very narrow torque curve. However, people started complaining about the drone... so some (Toyota being one) manufacturers implemented a step up system during acceleration -- a small concession since that is a much smaller proportion of your transmission usage (the other being engaged during highway speeds), and thus you'll still see MPG gains.
I personally think the corolla is a great car. The only reason I would ONLY buy a Tacoma or 4Runner from Toyota is because any other Toyota car (especially the Corolla, Camry and RAV4) will depreciate in value fairly quickly, especially if you put a lot of miles on your car (I drive 30k+ miles a year). The only reason I would buy one of these cars is for my kids and family who don’t drive as much. And even then, I would buy it cash, I would never finance one of these cars because if you do, get ready to be upside down on your loan for a very long time (unless you have 60-75% of the loan cash to put down). Don’t get me wrong, these vehicles work great and this car in particular looks awesome! They are super reliable but the resale value sucks and because of this I’m not sure if it’s worth investing 25k for something you will only be able to resale for about 10-13k in the near future.
That was an aggregate road you were on which is why it was loud. Other reviewers on different roadbeds found the only other real sound was tire noise. They were satisfied with cabin noise.
Toyota BETTER make a TRD version of this because who wouldn't buy it? It needs to be closer to 200HP and naturally aspirated! PLEASE TOYOTA PLEASE! I need this car in TRD in my life ASAP!
Excellent review, Forrest! The new 2019 Corolla Hatchback seems like quite the improvement over the previous generation iM. If I had the money, this would totally be my first pick in the compact hatchback segment. The looks are incredible, the available features are quite impressive, and the reliability is expected to be superb. The only aspects that I wish Toyota would improve on will probably be the cargo area and rear seat space. All in all, though, the Corolla seems like a great buy in its segment! Keep up the great work, Forrest!
Toyota has vastly improved the cargo area and rear seat space with the Corolla wagon they are about to launch at the Paris Auto Show. Do they have the brains to sell it here as well?
@@rightlanehog3151, Hopefully Toyota thinks about bringing the wagon version... Especially considering the relative sales success of the VW Golf Sportwagen and Subaru Outback here in the U.S.
DriveAndBeDriven , I have never understood why VW gets the entire compact, FWD wagon market to themselves. Toyota needs to hear from as many people as possible on the subject. #SaveTheWagon
Nice review! You always have great commentary and I love to hear what you say! Just wondering if you have the Lane Trace Assist with the Radar Cruise Control on, is it somewhat like auto-pilot on a Model 3 where you kind of have the car steering and controlling the gas pedal for you under conditions that allow it like on the highway? Of course not fully getting you from Point A to Point B but in short spurts here and there with those systems on? Thanks!
I believe the car will drift from side to side within its lane if you tried this. However you can buy something called the Comma AI (open pilot) that will take control of this behavior and make the car hold perfectly center, basically a poor man's tesla autopilot!
Most of this car is ripped from Lexus CT200h. Body style, soft dash, stitching, aluminum accents, sport mode w/dash colors, armrest is identical, etc...
I actually tried to correct that Yaris comment, which I based on your totally unbiased and even handed CarBuzz review which I watched the other day 😏😏😏😏
It would be nice if bright colors like this could be found on local dealer lots instead of black. white, dark gray and silver gray. Looking at the dealer web sites I thought they were posting black & white photos of their cars and thought that is odd, till I noticed the taillights are red. Doesn't anyone like red, blue and green cars anymore?
It is not hard to beat the Honda Civic on looks, firstly. Secondly, Toyota needs to either make this a better performance car in the future, or just make it a full electric WHILE KEEPING THE SPORTY LOOK (ie. not making it look like a sterile hybrid/electric car with the personality of a $35 PC tower). Lastly, add Android for car.
THANK YOU TOYOTA NO SUNROOF:) I had to order my Buick, VW and etc without a sunroof! Standard NO sunroof is JUST SMART-less crap to squeak, rattle and FAIL!
I was rather close to buying this corolla hatch! The main thing that made me say no was the lack of space, and not the best handling of the list of compact hatches. I wished there was more rear seat and hatch space. So I had to go for civic hatch. Also considered mazda3, however space was a concern too.
@Joey Gant since it's a hatchback I can't really say for sure (I'd say similar). However if you compare it against the 2019 sedan then it's a definite yes. I'm 5 foot 8 and had around 2 inches of leg room, but since it's a hatchback it's tighter inside then a sedan. The best thing you can do is go check it out for yourself.
T.D. Everyone has the same issues with the cramped rear seat and deficient cargo hold. Amazingly Toyota just solved those exact problems with the Corolla wagon they preview in Paris in October.
Hey bud, I want to thank you for talking about the cup holders. From other videos and pictures I've seen, it seemed like they wouldn't hold drinks very well while driving. However, in your video I could tell that they were deeper than I thought they were and when you were touching them, they seemed very secure. Thanks for clearing that up for me! Also appreciated your demo of the radar cruise control. Very informative video overall!
I think the only way this car would be any fun is with the manual transmission. But then you compare it to a 2019 Hyundai Veloster R-Spec with a great manual , tasteful enough interior, android auto or apple car play, well sorted steering and suspension, and, oh, 201 horsepower....all for $23K or so out the door. Much more fun to drive and best warranty in the land. This car becomes over priced...
You got the big 18" wheels, that leaves little tyre to absorb road noise. The 16" would be quieter :) It probably also doesn't have as much sound deadening, being a Corolla, they probably want you to upgrade to a more expensive car... The simulshifts are a good idea though.
One thing I don't like about the 2019-2020 Toyota Corolla is the engine is both Dual Port, and Direct Fuel Injection which is gonna cause even more bigger problems when it comes to carbon build up. The older models were equipped with naturally aspirated four cylinder engines.
Typically I never paid attention to the Corolla but this one is nice! Pretty good value from Toyota. It’s awesome they offer a manual option too, but still super efficient with the CVT. Keep up the good work Forrest!

There definitely needs to be some sort of sport or TRD version to compete with other hot hatches
Zatharos for real! I want this hatch already but if they come out with a TRD version I’m 1000% getting it.
Me too! I will only get it if TRD gets a hold of it with a bit more power in it, closer to 200 HP and naturally aspirated.

Whats the point of having a cvt transmission if they simulate the shifting feel? Isnt the whole point of cvt that you dont feel it shift?
No. The point of a CVT isn't "that you don't feel it shift", it's for better MPG rating, and longevity of transmission.
I believe the car will drift from side to side within its lane if you tried this. However you can buy something called the Comma AI (open pilot) that will take control of this behavior and make the car hold perfectly center, basically a poor man's tesla autopilot!
Really good review. Well done.
I’ve been waiting for this!!! Put a moonroof in it and it’s my next car. 100 percent!
Most of this car is ripped from Lexus CT200h. Body style, soft dash, stitching, aluminum accents, sport mode w/dash colors, armrest is identical, etc...
Just started watching. Saw the name and hope you don't let me down.
Detailed. Your voice is clear and you can hear what your saying.
Glad I subscribed.
Nice car but I would not buy one with the automatic. Finally NO Fred Flintstone rear suspension. Manual Corolla lives for ever and ever.
Awesome car, awesome review!
I'm guessing you like this Corolla better, than say.......a Toyota Yaris hatchback 🤨🤨🤨
@@JulezWinnfield Yaris IA isn't a hatchback, but still yes.
Nice video, everything on point...keep it up😉
have one in passion red with black roof and i love it🙂
It is not hard to beat the Honda Civic on looks, firstly.
Joey Gant the sedan has WAY more rear leg room
I recommend waiting for the next gen mazda3. I was rather close to buying one but it's space and features vs civic just made me pick civic
My god! People actually look at cup holders when choosing a car?!
What would you recommend between this and the Mazda3 Hatch?
Ohhh Mini Lexus I love it
great review
The shape of the rear hatch killed the cargo and rear leg room. The main thing that sucked about the iM and they carried it over to the new Corolla😐
Toyota will sell a ton of these new Corolla hatchbacks. I'm curious to see the new Corolla sedan vs the Civic, Elantra, Mazda3, etc.
A guy pulls a you turn at 20:20. Where's the cops 👮♀️ lol
It looks nice, Im guessing the ST and RS have influenced the design, but 168hp....Yea Ill stick with my ST.
It looks good but it needs the 8AR-FTS 2.0L turbocharged motor as and option❗️
I think the only way this car would be any fun is with the manual transmission. But then you compare it to a 2019 Hyundai Veloster R-Spec with a great manual , tasteful enough interior, android auto or apple car play, well sorted steering and suspension, and, oh, 201 horsepower....all for $23K or so out the door. Much more fun to drive and best warranty in the land. This car becomes over priced...
I wish the new Prius would look like this because honestly, current Prius looks like the ugliest 5 cars ever made
Очень хорошая машина. У меня 1995 года тоже хэчбэк катаюсь еще очень прочный машина японцы молодцы
You got the big 18" wheels, that leaves little tyre to absorb road noise. The 16" would be quieter :)
It probably also doesn't have as much sound deadening, being a Corolla, they probably want you to upgrade to a more expensive car...
Golf gti is the best hatchback period
