  • Driving around in my 2016 VW Golf R DSG, I discus certain situations where people have had problems with ACC. I myself have never had problems with ACC but that doesn't mean to say things can't go wrong!

    Great video, I have only used ACC in my Golf on the M4 and dual carriageways, never on A roads, like this, must try it sometime. Thanks for the instructions.

    The emergency brake(city safety) went off on my Volvo for no reason once. Nobody was ahead and no oncoming traffic. Lucky nobody was close behind as it came to a violent stop. Only happened the one time though. I never trusted the ACC on that car as the collision warning system would go off all the time when driving up windy side streets. Also the ACC over reacted when somebody would change in to my lane on the HWY . My VW ACC seems to work very well. No complaints yet.

    Good logic mate. All modern safety systems are only there to assist the driver.

    You're spot on Jay!
    I have a MK7 GTD DSG and MK7.5 DSG R.
    I regularly drive on the M25 at various speeds using ACC and also country roads, so a good variance and love the feature, it was an essential feature on buying the VW Golf's.
    I get a feeling that the ACC, once it recognises a vehicle in front it "locks onto them" so multi lane driving regarding other slower lane vehicles etc doesn't seem to upset it. You need to be mindful on motorways when the lead vehicle moves off to the slip road the ACC is still usually locked onto that car so can brake the car as they slowdown as the ACC hasn't worked out at that point you're not exactly following it so a dab of throttle until a new lead vehicle is picked up does the trick.
    Only on country roads if I have ACC at max distance the ACC can unlock from the lead vehicle on some corners but dialling the ACC to a shorter range stops such issues.
    It would be nice to see VW adopt what BMW has where the cruise control slows for corners pending steering wheel turn - that would make ACC really useful, or cameras in place of radar like Subaru Eyesight...
    Good video - thank you ;-)
    AJ

      the new toureg has this feature, the acc is linked to the nav and it slows you for bends. A little too conservative however from what I've read about it

  • @goons123flofy
    @goons123flofy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Acc is able to brake at 1/3 of the cars maximum braking capability. Always be ready to brake yourself to apply 100% brake, in case the situation demands more braking than acc is able to provide. Source... happened to me. To the cars credit, I did get a collision warning.

  • @GameWithViiP3R
    @GameWithViiP3R ปีที่แล้ว

    We used acc on the m54, and we set the distance the same as yourself. we set maximum distance, and we got rear-ended cause of a fool. Now we gotta wait for a new taigate looking at March for a boot so driving around with a massive dent in the boot

    On 2018.5 "R" you can set ACC to Comfort or Normal or Race. I will experiment to see which is smoothest as Comfort brakes unintuitively

    The system on my Skoda is hopeless. It has the same problem you say another correspondent mentioned - it is constantly braking when cars go off to the left up sliproads on motorways. It is particularly bad if the main carriageway bends to the right, so I’m betting the other guy has a VW group car too. After a couple of near accidents I don’t use it anymore. Another problem was it leaving very large gaps to the car in front at motorways speeds, so others would constantly pull out in front of you causing it to brake. This contrasts with lower speeds where it got alarmingly close to the car in front before hitting the brakes very hard. I’m getting a BMW 335d shortly (how I found your channel 😀) - it’ll be interesting to see if their system is better.

    I find ACC works briliantly, the only thing I have noticed is if your using it and the car in front comes to a complete stop, it really leaves the braking a bit late for my liking :D

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it scared my girlfriend recently were we came out of a costa coffee shop and i turned acc on whilst on a round about to demonstrate it to her and it seemed to approach to parked cars a bit quick, even i had to step in with the brakes lol. It raised an eye brow so im going to try that again

  • @anibap
    @anibap 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have a normal Golf MK7 with ACC and it is brilliant. I use it all the time in city or motorway. It is not a full proof system, but once you know how it works and its limitations, it can be quite relaxing to use. I find it particularly useful in city and also in 20mph zones as it keeps a steady speed and adapts to vehicles in front. It is also excellent in slow paced traffic or creeping on the road with heavy traffic as it adjusts speed according instead of human error of accelerating hard by mistake. It does tend to overreact and brake in certain circumstances but a gentle press on the accelerator can help in such situations
    I also like how it comes to a complete stop and and with a soft touch on the accelerator, its back in business.

    It's funny you mention you wouldn't trust the autopilot in having the car steer for you, I'm a hgv driver and tests are coming in to do what's called platooning so I believe, scary thinking having sensors take over and drive much closer to a wagon infront where different weights will come into play
    Great reviews by the way, just doing my research as I'm looking at going for a golf r

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello mate,
      Yes the other problem with automation is outside interference. For example I believe recently the Americans accused the Russians of manipulating gps signals causing vessels to go missing. There have been a few incidents recently where US military ships have collided with civilian vessels too... so with automation there is always chance for outside interference with cars and lorries too. I personally think acc is as far as it should go

    • @gaznelson8615
      @gaznelson8615 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's something what other hgv drivers have raised in concern, this platooning method will work with GPS and with the average artics running 30 tonnes+ it would make an attractive weapon to use, yes we can choose to dis engage from the system but surely someone could override that
      We have lane sensors so when you run along road lines it sends a beep through speakers to let you know your over the line or incase if you fall asleep, great bit of kit but due to weather conditions it's very temperamental, sometimes it doesn't work other days has mind of its own
      Having technology aid your driving experience is good but only to a point

  • @seanek9
    @seanek9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just to clarify some things. A Golf (MK67& Mk7.5) will only do an "emergency stop" at speeds below 19mph. At motorway speeds with ACC on it can only use 30% of the total braking power, if more is required its down to you. Its a lidar based system and a plastic bag will NOT trigger it because its looking for objects with much larger radar cross sections. Unfortunately a lot of people get conned into believing by the salesman that the 20-30K Golf they are buying does the same things as a fully specd Volvo XC90. Its not even close!

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 20k 30k golf isn’t anynear fully loaded lol. Fully loaded you’re looking at nearly 50k if I remember correctly. I’ve been told by quit a few people that the golfs Acc is superior to volvos. I wouldn’t know as I’ve never driven the Volvo 👍

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or if you’re saying that salesmen tell buyers that a 30k specced golf is vetter than a fully loaded Volvo. My dealer never mentioned any other brand. We just did a test drive and After test drivin the other top 4 cars I chose this car

      How is it now?

  • @Gary85Paul
    @Gary85Paul ปีที่แล้ว

    It doesn't react as quickly to changes in speed as fast as I do and I don't trust it at all. I do not trust it in the slightest. I've had many times where it feels that it will not slow down quickly enough, and I simply feel unsafe using it.
