  • Missing the green from inside 50 yards is a major pain point for golfers of any level. Having good accuracy with your wedges is one of the biggest levers you can pull when it comes to lowering your golf scores. In this lesson, Ed teaches Patrick some fundamentals on how to fix his wedge shots so they go more straight and stop pulling and hooking to the left.

    I just wanted to say that your content is absolutely excellent. Great balance of technical what needs to happen with simple how to try and make it happen. I think it really hits home with the skill and ability of the average golfer. I have learned more from you than any other coach I researched. Thank you

    Having been about a month since hitting any balls, I was working on a bit of this yesterday. One of the things I have learned from you, Coach Ed, is to recognize how the club is designed to work, that it will show you proper set up/positioning. This being so, on the range I now study every club I sole relative to my set up. It seems very exaggerated with the short irons but is exactly what you're discussing here. Thank you, sir! Great job, Patrick.

    I'll say again, it is a beautiful thing to watch a master do what he does. Coach Ed your teaching style is also part of my comment; your patient application of uncompromising adherence to concept and fundamentals, recognizing these things are what makes this "swing" work, is outstanding. THIS, is how you swing a golf club. Outstanding! Further proof of my comment is at the 23:36 mark - having hit nothing, no laughing!, you put up great numbers with excellent spin rate making a masterful show of complete and total competence. I may move to Missouri! Thank you, sir!

    My diagnosis of his wedge problem, in addition to the things addressed in the video, is how he grips the club on the ground. Any muscular contraction in the forearms /fingers when gripping the club inhibits free radial-ulnar deviation. I had the same problem until I switched to gripping the club in the air with shaft vertical as suggested by Martin Hall with his EDPU method. Start with Elbows Down / Palms Up with arms tucked in at sides bent 90°, rotate both hands 90° as when praying 🙏🏼 then insert club gripping it normally then lower and hover just over the ground.
    The first step puts both arms in the middle of their range of 180° pronation / supination when gripping the handle. The lowering and straightening of the arm causes both forearms to rotate inward ( ) which STRETCHES the muscles in the forearms which in turn causes the fingers to curl around the handle tighter. You get ideal control of the club and can freely waggle it up / down with radial / ulnar deviation while at the same time the counter-torque stabilizes the arm triangle and keeps hands in sync with the shoulder turn regardless of which club is being used. His spin rate improved in the latter part of of the video when he waggled the club as part of his pre-shot set-up, the test of whether or not there is too much tension in the grip.

    Ed is a very good teacher, always gives little tips that you never hear anyone talk about. I.E in this video is position ball upper body, not your feet. As for Patrick, not sure how he hits the ball with all the thoughts he has going thru his head.

    When you say wedges flatter, do you go up to the pitching wedge or how far?

    So happy while watching this …i was thinking i was correcting a huge fault in my swing with wedges/shorter irons when i was flatting the sole and to square my face at address i would have the butte end way in front of the ball (relatively) ….i always second guess myself ,especially if it was a “non perfect “ lie/shot aim ,or turf etc… now i know at worst i might be exaggerating it but im not totally wrong …well not wrong in that aspect of my setup . I mean iam and always have been multiples better with shorter irons and wedges (at more or less full swing) so i shouldve known this already .but in my mind ,for some reason i thought of it as: it was a “fix” that i just figured out …talk about over thinking hehe

      Holy crap ! Am at where Ed is showing where to keep the “L” in the back swing (how far back ) and where to hold that “L” to before release (when hands are back at the ball) blows my mind…from about every other online teacher ive been led to believe to at least feel like im releasing as early as possible but no later than a few feet before ball…and for what ever reason this tends to be one of ,if not the main thought i usually have in my head …never considered any other release thought …till right now!

    When you say wedges, where would you start? I'm standard in my irons, and I carry a 49 degree gap, a 52 degree, a 56 degree, and a 60 degree. Should I start at 52? 56? Or the 60? Thanks! Love the content!

    • @erichuber7827
      @erichuber7827 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ed, to take it a step further, my 60 has a bounce of 12 and my 56 is either 10 or 12....I absolutely hate both of them in the fairway. In the rough, in the sand, I'm far more confident with them and the bounce. Would flattening them change how the bounce works from the short grass? I lost 4-6 strokes last night in league because of poor wedge shots from the fairway.

  • @sph262
    @sph262 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To fix it, I would keep you swing path but weaken your grip (open a bit club face) , or set up with open feet and put ball position a bit left to promote a fade shot, if you lose distance then use a longer club instead of short club. :)

    When say 2 degrees flatter on wedges. Are you saying pit hing wedge as well or just the higher lofted wedges?

    • @edschwent1630

    Hey Golf Sensei, what do you think about one length irons? I know they have been around for awhile but seem to be popular again. Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks.

    • @edschwent1630
      @edschwent1630 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Clubs with varying links help produce a gap and yardage between clubs. I feel that one length one lie angle clubs are only effective for players with extremely high club head speeds. Then I think they are a great idea.
