- This video shows you how to initialize and format a new drive! It's recorded in Windows 10, but will work more or less the same way in Windows 8, 7, and even XP.

I've had desktop for the last 4 years and never knew how to initialise my hard drive, after years of having to conserve memory on the SSD I was down to my last gig of free space. I now have activated the hard drive. Thank you for this!

Bought this new hard drive about 18 months ago, didn't know how to format it and was afraid of damaging it. Was waiting for a friend to do it for me but I decided to TH-cam it instead. I wish I done that at the start, your video was really easily followed and I got it done in about 3 minutes 🙂
In this video when you clicked on Disk Management it automatically appeared with a window to do the action you are carrying out. On my laptop it does not do that so how do we find the window to initialize the disk first??

Quick tip for everyone: If you wanna use your (external drive) with both Windows and MacOS and iOS, format the drive to exFAT instead of NTFS. NTFS is not recognized by any Apple OSes.
However if you are 100% sure you will only use your drive on a Windows machine as an INTERNAL drive, follow this guy's tutorial and format it to NTFS, as NTFS is veeeeeeery slighly more stable on Windows, since it was made for it.
This was a very straight forward and helpful tutorial for setting up my new SSD. It's the first one I've done personally and this video was easy to follow and understand. It was dead on what I needed to do and my 1 TB SSD was exactly like this for the step by step. Thank you for doing this video. Video liked here. =)

Thank god. I recently bought a 2tb m.2 that was the 3rd most expensive component on my PC. Couldn't figure out how to format it, looked up this video, and boom, worked perfectly. BTW, if you are doing this for a steam library and it says that steam can't write to the drive, try write clicking on the drive under disk management, click properties, security, and make sure that all the users have permission to modify and full control, this worked for me.

AMAZING VIDEO! Really helped me out. Thought I had installed the drive wrong because it wasn't appearing. Looked up a tutorial. Most said to click the format button but for me that was greyed out. A few years ago I lent my hard drive to friend for a class and it has been formatted for a Mac ever since. I had no idea how to reformat it to Windows until now! Now I have more storage again. Thanks for the video!!

Thanks, this vid was a lifesaver. I googled "why isn't windows recognizing my new hard drive" and the first result said I either have a faulty cable or a busted drive. I got a mini heart attack and then I found your vid.
It doesn't let me initialize my disk, and the first thing about MBR and GPT doesn't pop up.

When you say 2TB for choosing between GPT and MBR, do you mean 2TB or greater or just greater than 2TB?

GPT is required for any drives larger than about 2TB. If it's smaller than that, MBR should work well.

SO i'm no tech guy by any mean, i'm better at physical work and such, but a friend gifted me a Gaming PC recently and it had 500GB of storage, figured i would grab a 1TB to add to the other slot, so it wouldn't initialize on its own at first and i had no idea what i was doing, searched out some Videos and everyone was saying go GTP cause its newer, well non of them mentioned if your doing under 1TB or under its better to go MBR, so first round i ended up selecting GBT, idk if i fixed that but i fallowed your video and it seems to be showing up and operating, so thank ya a lot for the dummies like me out there lol
