From your accent I'm guessing you may be South African and at 36 years old you would have been born around the time Dire Straits headlined The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium before a global audience of over 600m. The concert helped heap pressure on the South African government to release Mandela and bring apartheid to an end. Dire Straits were actually on hiatus at the time after a massive world tour and got back together specially. Their then rhythm guitarist Jack Sonni couldn't make it though as he was home in New York where his wife had just given birth to twins. Fortunately they were able to draft in a replacement, some chap called Eric Clapton. The whole set was great and well worth watching. In particular I strongly recommend checking out their performance of Brothers In Arms. It's a sublime song and it's the most emotional rendition of it Mark Knopfler's ever given.

I think Terry, in his prime, was one of the most technical drummers out there. His power and precision in this performance is unmatched. Terry is now 76 and retired in Wales. Of course, Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world, and pretty humble. If you ask him, he'll tell you that he barely knows how to hold the damned thing. Just one of the best live performances in rock.

I don't he was the most technical (he of course was technical, but as much compared to some of the drumming greats), but what he had over most other drummers was next level intensity and passion, and few could match this. I defo think he is one of the most underrated drummers of all time.
Talking of being humble I saw an interview with Mark recently and he was asked about his reaction to being called the greatest guitarist in the world. His response was "what a load of nonsense".

Thank God this masterpiece has been preserved forever on video. A young Mark Knopfler and his compadres, in my opinion, made music history with their signature song Sultans of Swing (Alchemy Live) the night of this performance. I have viewed this dozens of times ever since it has been on TH-cam, and it sounds as fresh and new as it did the first time. Knopfler is a genius when it comes to the guitar.
I always love it when Mark looks into the camera and smiles like what he's doing 'aint nothing. The man is a genius songwriter/performer/storyteller. So many other Straits tracks to enjoy. 'Romeo & Juliet' 'Brothers In Arms' 'Money For Nothing' 'Walk of Life' to name but a few, all works of musical art. I was there! Its still one of the top gigs ever, I was just 18 and thought this was normal! Its still right up there after 41 years It wasn't normal and I'm so glad it was recorded so well that we can still enjoy it. The whole band was on top of their game and it was a great gig, it really got going after they played this, we were a bit quiet, not after Sultans! We were on the balcony, just behind the people you could see clapping and we thought the balcony was coming down the whole place was jumping! I love the drums and Terry Williams was the star for me, he always played like that! So pleased you like it. Now you have to see the Alchemy version of Telegraph Road (Its the law)

Saw them in in 1991 in Scotland, the "On Every Street Tour"....however, as a 19yr old when Alchemy came out it has always been and forever will be the concert I wish I had gone to see.
I still remember where I was on a mid 80's afternoon when I heard this perfection ... at the time I knew it was something special because everyone just got quiet and were glued to the screen. When it completed, We just passed the pipe around and everyone never said anything and were quiet and for like 10-15 minutes just kind of absorbed what we had just heard. It was different.

from JAPAN. Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands, along with BAND-MAID. The vocals show the influence of Bob Dylan. Most notable is Mark Knopfler's fingerpicking guitar. His guitar solos are technical, very emotional, and full of his personality. They are also very accomplished as a live band, and have a sophistication that you don't find in rock bands that approach you with loud music. Anyway, I really enjoy listening to this band.
There are not many R&R performances that go on for over 9 minutes and include a 3-4 minute guitar solo that you don't want to ever end, neither the solo nor the song. This song and Freebird are insane examples.
Mark was left handed and taught himself to play a right handed guitar. He said it made sense to him because all the work was done by the left hand. He is now 74 years old and just released his 10th album.
Exactly! That’s what I said! I learned as an adult and it made absolutely no sense to me that my left hand was doing all the work. The fingerpicking style is what appealed to me and it actually ends up being pretty even, but I was very upset that my fret hand was my left hand, I should’ve known that after buying at least 10 guitars for my left-handed son
The first time I heard that song I was in my car on the way to work and it was about half way through when I pulled into the parking lot ... I sat in my car and waited until the end of the song and then waited for three or four other songs (this was before there were digital displays in cars) until the DJ announced the line up he had played so I could get the name of the band. I was late for work as a result. It's crazy that the live version done here is even better than the studio version that was so damn good that I did what I described above.

Dire Straits was one of my favorite bands back in the 80's and 90's when I was in the Army. They still are today. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists ever.
It's a great feel good story that this was the first time Terry's father saw him play live. It wasn't. Terry used to drum for Yes. This was the first time Terry's dad saw him live with Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler is truly a GOD among guitar players due to his finger plucking style, instead of using a pick. The banjo roll, using thumb and first three fingers. One of maybe 10 guitarists in the world that can maintain constant 1/16th note riffs finger plucking. Then there's the fact he's left handed, self taught and couldn't read music. Mark said he was a guitar teacher's nightmare recently LMAO! No autotune and definitely using tube style amps, as their Hertz range is 200-20,000. Human hearing is 800-12000. Digital music is only 1000 hertz to 10,000 hertz, losing 200 on bottom end that you can't hear and 2000 on the top end that is lost in all digital recordings and music. This is pure talent and true masters of their craft!
The average human hearing goes down closer to 20hz, not 800hz, a quick google search will also tell you this. Plus, the average upper range is around 15,000-17,000hz, with some being able to hear up to 20,000hz. A 30hz test tone on my subwoofer is heard quite easily. Plus, if digital music only goes down to 1000hz, why don't small bookshelf speakers have the same apparent low frequency sound as a high-end pair of tower speakers (or even subwoofer)? Seeing as you said digital music doesn't go below 1000hz and most small bookshelf speakers can go down to 80hz or even lower. If what you say is the case, then the 'bass' should sound the same from a depth perspective with digital sound (sound, not 'feel') on them as they are both being fed the same 1,000hz cut-off/lower limit, a frequency well inside their sub-100hz capabilities.

Mark Knoppler, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn - three of the greatest guitarists of their generation. Those of us growing up in the sixties, seventies, and eighties were so, so proud and privileged to hear and see these men and a few others not mentioned. Music these days just don’t have the same power, soul, and joy.

I'm not a Dire Straits fan, by any measure, but I think that this is one of the greatest electric guitar performances (the whole band are amazing) that I've ever seen. Love your reaction to it, the pure joy on your face is something to behold.
This was a great performance at a good time in their career. I heard somewhere that the drummer had people in the audience that night. Parents, or something and he said he got a little carried away. lol Not sure if that's true or not, but Mark didn't seem to mind and neither did I.

Can watch this over and over. It must have been a career highlight for them; everyone got it right and not a coincidence, were enjoying it immensely. Then throw in all the obvious talent that allows for improvisation on that level. To be honest, I'm not crazy about the song itself but the second half... wow!

I'm a 'boomer,' and JUST discovered the brilliance of Dire Straits last week. I think the studios, back in the day, took life (frequencies) out of the Singles (which is all that was played on the radio). I recognized it, but this is nothing like, except I remembered his distinctive way of singing, like a balladeer, and verrrrry cool. The single was 4 min. The album track was 6 mins, and this live is 10:46. He's 'outside the box.' Completely self-taught, and left-handed!
I dont know why but I get a bit emotional when hearing the perfection off the guitar riff and seeing him on the drums after someone said his mum and dad were there it really made me feel so proud of them all. Music nowadays with auto tune ghost writers and computerised instrumentals isn't the same and cant hold a candle next to the oldskool guys and gals 👍😎
@joelanderos23 Yes! Lindsey is definitely an incredible player. Got to see him performing "Big Love" live at their Orlando performance of The Dance tour 25 years ago. It sounds as if there are multiple guitars playing at the same time. He is definitely in Mark's class. One of only of few I've seen run consistent 1/16th note riffs. Mark, Lindsey, Roy Clark, and a few more.
What always gets me is that we're used to seeing this moment in time and think it's extraordinary, as indeed it is. But think about when they were touring: they were doing this EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.

I may be old, but I am so glad I grew up on some of the greatest music of all time. I may be old fashioned, but I haven’t heard anything recently that even comes close to this kind of greatness. No autotune, no drum machine, just great musicianship and great music.
That drummer is Terry Williams and this is one of the best live drum performances ever captured on film. People have said his parents were there to see him and the band for the first time and he wanted to give them a show. Even Mark Knopfler looked back at him once and smiled during one of those amazing fills. I'm a guitar player and I often watch not just for the guitars and performance but to watch Terry work those drums.

Terry Williams was the drummer at this point, he helped shape the live sound we all know today. They are all in their 70s now.
loved Dire Straits, but when Mark Knophler went on his own I liked him even more. He's a master wordsmith, wrote dozens of high quality songs.
No matter when, no matter where, it doesn't matter what version of this song I hear, I always feel good after hearing it.

from JAPAN. Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands, along with BAND-MAID. The vocals show the influence of Bob Dylan. Most notable is Mark Knopfler's fingerpicking guitar. His guitar solos are technical, very emotional, and full of his personality. They are also very accomplished as a live band, and have a sophistication that you don't find in rock bands that approach you with loud music. Anyway, I really enjoy listening to this band.
All of the band are having such a great time and that comes across very strongly, so the audience are too!!!
There are not many R&R performances that go on for over 9 minutes and include a 3-4 minute guitar solo that you don't want to ever end, neither the solo nor the song. This song and Freebird are insane examples.

Mark was left handed and taught himself to play a right handed guitar. He said it made sense to him because all the work was done by the left hand. He is now 74 years old and just released his 10th album.
That’s what my instructor told me when I started playing. I’m left handed.
For me it's exactly the other way around. I'm right-handed, but I much prefer playing left-handed instruments :D
To be correct mate, it is Mark's 10th SOLO album. There are also 6 Dire Straits albums plus several live concert albums. Peace & Love
Exactly! That’s what I said! I learned as an adult and it made absolutely no sense to me that my left hand was doing all the work. The fingerpicking style is what appealed to me and it actually ends up being pretty even, but I was very upset that my fret hand was my left hand, I should’ve known that after buying at least 10 guitars for my left-handed son

The first time I heard that song I was in my car on the way to work and it was about half way through when I pulled into the parking lot ... I sat in my car and waited until the end of the song and then waited for three or four other songs (this was before there were digital displays in cars) until the DJ announced the line up he had played so I could get the name of the band. I was late for work as a result. It's crazy that the live version done here is even better than the studio version that was so damn good that I did what I described above.

Dire Straits was one of my favorite bands back in the 80's and 90's when I was in the Army. They still are today. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists ever.

It's a great feel good story that this was the first time Terry's father saw him play live. It wasn't. Terry used to drum for Yes. This was the first time Terry's dad saw him live with Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler is truly a GOD among guitar players due to his finger plucking style, instead of using a pick. The banjo roll, using thumb and first three fingers. One of maybe 10 guitarists in the world that can maintain constant 1/16th note riffs finger plucking. Then there's the fact he's left handed, self taught and couldn't read music. Mark said he was a guitar teacher's nightmare recently LMAO! No autotune and definitely using tube style amps, as their Hertz range is 200-20,000. Human hearing is 800-12000. Digital music is only 1000 hertz to 10,000 hertz, losing 200 on bottom end that you can't hear and 2000 on the top end that is lost in all digital recordings and music. This is pure talent and true masters of their craft!
The average human hearing goes down closer to 20hz, not 800hz, a quick google search will also tell you this. Plus, the average upper range is around 15,000-17,000hz, with some being able to hear up to 20,000hz. A 30hz test tone on my subwoofer is heard quite easily. Plus, if digital music only goes down to 1000hz, why don't small bookshelf speakers have the same apparent low frequency sound as a high-end pair of tower speakers (or even subwoofer)? Seeing as you said digital music doesn't go below 1000hz and most small bookshelf speakers can go down to 80hz or even lower. If what you say is the case, then the 'bass' should sound the same from a depth perspective with digital sound (sound, not 'feel') on them as they are both being fed the same 1,000hz cut-off/lower limit, a frequency well inside their sub-100hz capabilities.
This performance was incredible. They all rock this one in their own way. Mark Knopfler is a guitar genius & he his band mates were having such a fun time up there. Wonderful show. Thank you for sharing this one.

Mark Knoppler, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn - three of the greatest guitarists of their generation. Those of us growing up in the sixties, seventies, and eighties were so, so proud and privileged to hear and see these men and a few others not mentioned. Music these days just don’t have the same power, soul, and joy.
Can't mention those three without adding Gary Moore into the equation. Less well known, but possibly the best of them all
I would add Paul Kossof and Peter Green. Where do you stop, though? The 60s and 70s was a golden age, though that's not to denigrate later eras.

A true guitar legend at the top of his game, with an incredible group of musicians. Never gets old, this remains one of the great live performances we are lucky to have through YT.
I'm not a Dire Straits fan, by any measure, but I think that this is one of the greatest electric guitar performances (the whole band are amazing) that I've ever seen. Love your reaction to it, the pure joy on your face is something to behold.

This was a great performance at a good time in their career. I heard somewhere that the drummer had people in the audience that night. Parents, or something and he said he got a little carried away. lol Not sure if that's true or not, but Mark didn't seem to mind and neither did I.

Can watch this over and over. It must have been a career highlight for them; everyone got it right and not a coincidence, were enjoying it immensely. I'm a 'boomer,' and JUST discovered the brilliance of Dire Straits last week. I think the studios, back in the day, took life (frequencies) out of the Singles (which is all that was played on the radio). I recognized it, but this is nothing like, except I remembered his distinctive way of singing, like a balladeer, and verrrrry cool. The single was 4 min. The album track was 6 mins, and this live is 10:46. He's 'outside the box.' Completely self-taught, and left-handed!

I dont know why but I get a bit emotional when hearing the perfection off the guitar riff and seeing him on the drums after someone said his mum and dad were there it really made me feel so proud of them all. Music nowadays with auto tune ghost writers and computerised instrumentals isn't the same and cant hold a candle next to the oldskool guys and gals 👍😎

@joelanderos23 Yes! Lindsey is definitely an incredible player. Got to see him performing "Big Love" live at their Orlando performance of The Dance tour 25 years ago. It sounds as if there are multiple guitars playing at the same time. He is definitely in Mark's class. One of only of few I've seen run consistent 1/16th note riffs. Mark, Lindsey, Roy Clark, and a few more.

I may be old, but I am so glad I grew up on some of the greatest music of all time. I may be old fashioned, but I haven’t heard anything recently that even comes close to this kind of greatness. No autotune, no drum machine, just great musicianship and great music.
That drummer is Terry Williams and this is one of the best live drum performances ever captured on film. People have said his parents were there to see him and the band for the first time and he wanted to give them a show. Even Mark Knopfler looked back at him once and smiled during one of those amazing fills. I'm a guitar player and I often watch not just for the guitars and performance but to watch Terry work those drums.
