Hi, It was filmed in July 1983 at Hammersmith Odeon, London. I know this because I was there, I recognise the people clapping in the front row! I was, just, 18 and it was the second gig I went to, the first was the Rolling Stones at Wembley (Still Life Tour) so the bar was set very high. I thought this was normal, but its not, its still one of my top gigs, they all killed it: Mark, Guitar vocals and all round genius. Hal Lindes on backing guitar and backing vocals John Illsley, Bass and backing vocal The brilliant Alan Clark on keys (With Tommy Mandel on back up keys I think its mostly Hammond Organ) Last but not least, the wonderful Terry Williams in drums, the best drummer you've never heard of! The show took a while to get going, but after this it really kicked in to gear, we also realised how good they really are, this show is one of the best ever recorded by any band. You can also see they were loving it and we were too, I was on the balcony, a few rows back and we were getting scared in case it came down, it was banging! For me, because I love good drumming, Terry Williams was the star, peerless. He always played flat out! I'm sure you'll enjoy any song from this show, but you have to watch Telegraph Road, its the law! Thanks for a great reaction❤❤

i remember when i first heard them on my car radio in 77 or 78, i was 18yrs old, totally different sound from anybody else and great songs, still not got old, just wish i had the car that i was driving when i first heard them, 1969 chevelle SS black on black,

Look at the way the band are looking at each other and smiling its as though they can,t believe how on fire and in the zone they are they are playing above themselves the gods of music are looking down and telling them to give the fans something special that they will never forget. Just musical perfection by the whole band
Mark Knopfler is a legendary guitarist. His finger style, the way he picks the strings is what that gives that special sound. The way he sings though is somewhat at a lower level than his guitar prowess. Later in their career they wrote *Brothers in arms* where his singing I think is way more melodic and it's a softer song. I strongly suggest you check it out one day, specially the official video where they mix animation and real footage, a masterpiece.
‘They’ (DS) didn’t write “Brothers in Arms’, Mark wrote & arranged all the songs and lyrics for all 6 Dire Straits Albums, including his 10 Solo Albums. Amazing musicians, Alan Clark, John Illsley, Guy Fletcher, & Jack Sonni, have all lauded MK’s songwriting abilities, & Alan Clark said on video that no one else could do what MK did, i.e. have at least 20 songs ready for each DS album. Also, I do find it pretty arrogant when people with cloth ears assume all MK’s fans have the same sad condition. His voice is an integral part of DS sound, thousands of fans love the tone of his vocals singing or talking, and as his band members tell it nobody else could do MK’s lyrics justice. Finally, MK himself is not a fan of the animated and/or recorded ‘official’ videos, he feels they do not represent the songs, and for the ‘real’ experience you should watch the LIVE concert performances which give you additional content & a lot more atmosphere. "Live Alchemy" was Released in '84 . This album reminds me of a friend who while skiing basically wrapped his leg around a tree (literally from how he tells the story ) He broke his femur . But during the surgery to repair the bad fracture / break , it became infected . He wound up spending 6 months in the hospital . He was a music junkie like me so brought him one of my 30 tape holding cassette cases & "Live Alchemy" became one of his favorites to listen to .BTW Nice chair bopping today Red ! 🙂
Great memories from this band. They where big as hell during the late 70 and 80. I remember tis track Sultans of swing beeing playd all over europe and the rest of the world. I was on the beautiful island of Naxos Greece in 1978. The sun was hot...the beer was cold and the women ever so beautiful. From every bar on the island you could hear Sultans of swing. Sultans came out in 1978. Those who commented that they were at this show are so fortunate. This is Dire Straits at their best. Knopfler’s guitar tone is instantly recognizable.
Thank you for this, Red. It is easy to see when a reactor listens to this: the reactor's body always moves with the music. I once came across a reactor who sat as still as a rock throughout this performance and said that the music was too repetitive. It takes all sorts. You spotted the Welsh talent on the drums. Well done. That was Terry Williams who celebrated the fact that his Dad was in the audience by giving us all a great performance. I saw him playing with the Welsh band, Man who played in London many times during the 1970s. I have seen plenty of great drummers but Terry was the best. Sadly, very few ever do a reaction to Man.
@@redheadedneighbor Sadly, there are not many live videos of Man. They were quite big in the UK and Germany. I saw them dozens of times. During the 70s they were the best live band in London. People don't react to them because they were never popular enough but anyone who saw them was always blown away. If you like, I shall look for a suitable video of Man for you to react to. Many have no visuals and they were like a heavier and tighter version of the Grateful Dead and their heroes were the Quicksilver Messenger Service who, like the Dead, were also based in San Francisco
Bob Dylan was and is one of the inspirations for Mark Knopfler. Later in his career Knopfler was invited by Dylan to produce two of his albums as well as to play with him on а World tour and multiple live gigs.
Cool to see you react to this performance, basically it's 'Sultana of Swing' on steroid's as the record version is played and sung more straight forward, And you know, once you mentioned it - you can hear a Dylanesque singing cadence or quality in this performance - perhaps cuz he's from Glasgow, Scotland. The song is about a jazz ensemble Mark Knopfler saw performing earnestly in a deserted pub; they called themselves the Sultans of Swing. The crowd might not have cared, but they were doing it for the love of the music.
You may have heard of, or perhaps even watched, the movie "The Princess Bride". Soundtrack by Mark Knopfler who's guitar playing you just enjoyed. One of my favourite guitarists.
Yes, Mark had some Dylan-style vocal rhythms early in his career. Less so as time went on. But there were also times Dylan sounded like Mark for the simple reason that he hired Mark to play lead guitar in his band. "Slow Train Coming" is a good example, where you can hear Dylan's vocals and Mark's lead guitar on the same song. The two also toured together later on.
This is the song that made me first fall in love with Dire Straits. My understanding about the drummer he was a bit more dynamic in this concert because his dad was in the audience. Maybe somebody can clarify this a bit more.
I saw Dire Straits in Toronto back in the 80's. A young upstart named Stevie Ray Vaughan opened for them. There was a girl close to our group who screamed, " Is that Sting? " when they played Money For Nothing. It wasn't him, but she must have been embarrassed.

Way back 40 or so, years ago, this was one of CDs I picked up when I added a compact disc player to my stereo system.
The drummer hadn't seen his father for 10 years who turned up. That's why he played out of his skin.

Thank you for this, Red. It is easy to see when a reactor listens to this: the reactor's body always moves with the music. I once came across a reactor who sat as still as a rock throughout this performance and said that the music was too repetitive. It takes all sorts. You spotted the Welsh talent on the drums. Well done. That was Terry Williams who celebrated the fact that his Dad was in the audience by giving us all a great performance. I saw him playing with the Welsh band, Man who played in London many times during the 1970s. I have seen plenty of great drummers but Terry was the best. Sadly, very few ever do a reaction to Man.

@@redheadedneighbor Sadly, there are not many live videos of Man. They were quite big in the UK and Germany. I saw them dozens of times. During the 70s they were the best live band in London. People don't react to them because they were never popular enough but anyone who saw them was always blown away. If you like, I shall look for a suitable video of Man for you to react to. Many have no visuals and they were like a heavier and tighter version of the Grateful Dead and their heroes were the Quicksilver Messenger Service who, like the Dead, were also based in San Francisco

Bob Dylan was and is one of the inspirations for Mark Knopfler.
Later in his career Knopfler was invited by Dylan to produce two of his albums as well as to play with him on а World tour and multiple live gigs.
Cool to see you react to this performance, basically it's 'Sultana of Swing' on steroid's as the record version is played and sung more straight forward, And you know, once you mentioned it - you can hear a Dylanesque singing cadence or quality in this performance - perhaps cuz he's from Glasgow, Scotland.

The song is about a jazz ensemble Mark Knopfler saw performing earnestly in a deserted pub; they called themselves the Sultans of Swing. The crowd might not have cared, but they were doing it for the love of the music.

You may have heard of, or perhaps even watched, the movie "The Princess Bride". Soundtrack by Mark Knopfler who's guitar playing you just enjoyed. One of my favourite guitarists.

Yes, Mark had some Dylan-style vocal rhythms early in his career. Less so as time went on. But there were also times Dylan sounded like Mark for the simple reason that he hired Mark to play lead guitar in his band. "Slow Train Coming" is a good example, where you can hear Dylan's vocals and Mark's lead guitar on the same song.
The two also toured together later on.

I was lucky to of been in the ordinance at the Odeon in Hammersmith it was in 1987 I still have the ticket which cost £11.50
This is the song that made me first fall in love with Dire Straits.
My understanding about the drummer he was a bit more dynamic in this concert because his dad was in the audience. Maybe somebody can clarify this a bit more.

I saw Dire Straits in Toronto back in the 80's. A young upstart named Stevie Ray Vaughan opened for them. There was a girl close to our group who screamed, " Is that Sting? " when they played Money For Nothing. It wasn't him, but she must have been embarrassed.
