    One of the greatest rock performances of all time. Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists ever and Terry Williams absolutely murdered those drums.

    Mark Knopfler (in red) is still working at age 75. His latest album came out in April 2024!
    He did 6 studio albums as part of Dire Straits, 10 solo albums, 9 film scores, and lots of collaborations with other artists. So if you like his stuff, there's plenty to dig into. He also owns a recording studio in London

    Mark is a god on the guitar and his voice is beautiful. Terry on the drums is out of this world and Alan on the piano is amazing. The whole group is just perfect and the harmony is top notch. The whole "Alchemy" concert was amazing, make sure you watch "Telegraph Road" - a masterpiece. "Tunnel of Love" live at Wembley is also an absolute masterpiece, the autograph will blow you away. It was also a great concert and definitely worth seeing.

    It was filmed in July 1983, no computer assistance required.
    I was 18 at the time and I was at this gig, its still one of the best, I think for talent across the whole band, this gig was the best.
    the line up was:
    Mark Knopfler - vocals, guitars, he wrote the songs as well, all round genius!
    John Illsley - bass, vocals;
    Hal Lindes - guitar;
    Terry Williams - drums, he was the unexpected star, just brilliant!
    Alan Clark - keyboards; Another genius
    Tom Mandel - Back up keyboards;
    Next you have to react to Telegraph Road, same show, its even better!

    if you thought this was great, then you need to hear Telegraph Road from the same album. Also bear in mind that this band was from the 70's - probably long before you were born ? I've been following them from day one and I'm now 77 years old. They are a rock and roll phenomena of the highest calibre and their lead guitar and band leader Mark Knoffler plays using only his thumb and two fingers !! - no pick! Mark, himself, is over 70 now ! and still doing it.

    Welcome to Mark Knopfler and band. He's one of the greatest songwriters, guitarists and performers to ever grace this beautiful planet. One of a kind artist, the full package and rightly regarded as one of the greatest artists of all time, whether with Dire Straits or as a solo performer. I am excited for your journey of discovery ahead. Enjoy. They were at one point the biggest band in the world, but none of that really matters. Highest echolon of music and he continues to write many more masterpieces. Great reaction.😮

    I'm so grateful that I grew up with this music; I am now also getting a kick out of watching new generations discover this band! Mark Knopfler is a guitar virtuoso and finger-plucking genius (unlike most guitarists, he doesn't use a pick), and he is best known for his unique and spot-on tone, nuanced phrasing and masterful skill as a guitarist. Fun fact-- Mark is actually left handed, but is playing brilliantly with his right hand! Mark was also a gifted story-teller/song-writer and composer for the band, and he would go on to compose musical scores for films, as well as pursuing a solo music career that continues today.
    The demo track of "Sultans of Swing" (1977) secured the band it's first record deal. This is one of their best performances, no doubt: That said, if you want to really see the breathtaking live musicianship of this band, and the kind of epic musical masterpiece they could collectively produce, you have to treat yourself to their performance of "Telegraph Road" from this same Alchemy Live concert. Mark's composition ensures that the talents of every member of the band shine as well. Finally, no introduction to Dire Straits would be adequate without "Brothers in Arms"; you can watch the official video to grasp the lyrics and meaning of the track, but then you have to treat yourself to their live performance from 'On The Night'... still gives me chills! Welcome to the wonderful world of Dire Straits 😁

    Terry Williams on drums was just amazing. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world. Terry is now retired at the age of 76. Mark is still recording and doing small, more intimate shows. This is definitely one of the best live performances in rock history. It's hard to believe this performance was 41 years ago. The Brothers In Arms official video is heartbreaking. It's about the Falklands war. Mark uses the guitar as a second vocal in my opinion and it is phenomenal. Check out "Just the Drummer in the Band". It's a documentary about Terry.

    Many of the musicians back then were very familiar with classical music from Beethoven, Mozart, etc. Note how the entire song follows the standard motif of a classical symphony movement: exposition of a theme, variation on the theme, and then finally the resolution of theme coming back at the end.

    The drummer, Terry Williams was white hot in this, and he was driving the performance like an F1 driver on meth. His father came to the show and had never seen his son on stage. Mark Knopfler (guitar, red jacket), heard about this and he told Williams to 'go berserk'. So he did. He is driving the performance like an F1 driver on meth. Like many Dire Straits songs it's a true story. Knopfler is a fan of Zydeco, a very old pre-Blues style of jazz from the Louisiana swamplands.

    I absolutely LOVE to see young people discovering the REAL music that came out when we were your age!
    Since you have so many amazing responses already, I'll leave that alone and suggest a few things to help your channel.
    Before making a reaction video:
    1) If you don't have time to research the band you are reviewing, then at a minimum, print out or bring up on your phone the lyrics so you can follow along. Many songs from this era, tell a story. It can be fun to figure out just what the writer is trying to convey.
    2) Before reviewing a live version, see if there was an original studio version and listen to that first. That way, not only can you hear it with amazing sound quality, but you can appreciate what the band has done for its audience and how the song has evolved.
    As far as what is next:
    You can't go wrong with any classic rock from the 70's. But I will recommend my favorite "Rock Opera" song. Print out the lyrics and follow along with the studio version. THEN, see how much of the story you can decipher on your own.
    THEN, there is an animated version that walks the viewer through and tells you exactly what it all means.
    The song is "2112" and the band is "Rush"
    Have Fun!!!

    Lots of great songs from them, pretty much the whole of Brothers In Arms is worth a listen, some fun very early videos to go with them Money For Nothing was one of the First tracks played on the Brand New MTV (as far as I remember in the early 80s)

    BMI, let's get your views up. I'm sure lots of reccos have come in for DS, one of my favourite bands. If you wanna expand your understanding of music art try out Deep Purple, Child in time live 1970. Pure music performance, deep meaning .. I reckon you may decipher it.

      @@BimuReacts Bear in mind, Regardless of internet/peoples info, Deep Purple invented Heavy metal/rock as we know it. Bands like led zep , etc ALL followed. This live 1970 performance is iconic, no frills. The song and music has very deep meaning Deep Purple- refused to release it as single upto today. I enjoy pure music performances, so if I catch your reaction to child in time and you like it, I'll be sure to put in further suggestions. Enjoy

    Just to expand your musical knowledge of bands from the 70’s I strongly suggest you check out the band Jethro Tull cuz they are unique. Start with the performance from the 1970 Isle of Wight on TH-cam and you’ll be amazed at the music and the talent of the band especially Ian Anderson’s performance

    With due respect to merrilynhunt7819, Dire Straits was the dawn of the computer age in music. The video for "Money for Nothing" took up half the world's computing power. A talented finger picker matched with 64K of RAM blew everyone's mind. I'd have those days again. :D

      I agree. Mark was not thrilled with doing that video for MTV but I guess money talks. Watch "Calling Elvis" in 1993 On The Night concert. Not a cell phone in sight. Wonderful to see people actually listening to the best band before it disbanded.

      @@merrilynhunt7819 Cool video; I hadn't seen it. I didn't know Dire Straits was still popular enough in 1993 to fill a stadium like that. I guess that was around the time that "Heavy Fuel" came out, and that wasn't very good. Truth be told, I like a lot of Knopfler's solo songs better than most of his work with Dire Straits.
