Training the Brain as a Runner

  • Fitness does not lie. BUT, it does not hurt the running cause either to obtain a strong mental state in our training and racing. Patience and fortitude is frankly the tact I take when attempting to become a better runner, specifically between the ears. As I continue to dabble in mountain running and again someday in ultra running, I do look forward to the opportunity to test my mental limits. Today's run up Mount Bierstadt is one little step in the right direction for obtaining some more mental focus and toughness on race day at the Pikes Peak Ascent. Onward and Upward as we say around here!

    QD - absolutely. I seek out the hottest most humid weather or coldest windiest weather for my longest/fastest/toughest runs. Always run most when you least feel like it is a motto i stick by. That'll help keep the mental axe sharp.

    Love the video. Mental toughness is a big part of running. Sadly being mentally tough won’t get me through a shin splint injury I achieved at work today. Hoping to get it fixed before the cross country season starts this coming Monday. Realistically it probably won’t happen seeing as how the pain just keeps getting worse and I’m just laying here😫

    QOD one thing I’ve noticed lately is when I’m say an hour or so into my running up some step hills, some times I say to myself “ My god you got to be joking me! This is hard! “ then as soon as I’ve said that a big drain of energy hits & I slow right down, so instead now I say, “ you’re doing good! Hills are good!” Hills are good!” & believe it or not the run comes a hell of a lot easier, awesome Seth way to go 👍

    Hey Seth, I think it would be really interesting to see your opinion on doubling. If you do it yourself? the different types of runners who should be doing it? when to do it? is it bad? Think that would be cool to give your opinion on.

    I am a big fan of mindfulness, and have been practicing for over a year. One useful thing I have learned is to spot the unhelpful thoughts (this is too hard, just give up, you’re no good at this) as just that - thoughts. They don’t reflect reality. So, I can go back to concentrating on my breath, and those thoughts will disappear. Use Headspace, Waking Up, Budhify etc. All really good meditation apps.
    Keep up the good work everybody!!

    QD: Still a novice runner, but I’ve been running in 102+ heat most of the summer, first summer ever as a runner. Curious to see what, if any, benefits in the fall. At 50 and 196lbs, these have been real grinds, especially at 5+ miles.

      Why not run early in the morning or in the late evening?

    • @robertbausa1
      @robertbausa1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seatownfan Mainly schedule. I start work early and am off and ready for a run at 4pm. Waking up at 4-4:30am just isn't in my wheelhouse. Especially in the heat/humidity, I can't handle running after eating dinner. On the hot days, heat index doesn't drop much below 100 until 9pm and running wires me so messes with my sleep. Over the alternatives, I prefer the heat in the afternoon and I do run a highly shaded route except sometimes on shorter 3-4 mile runs.

    For me ... without being too analytical, it's the many constant small tough challenges I can find, and that feeling of total focus as my brain clears. I get a sharp focus, 'fight instincts' take over from 'flight', and everything around me goes into slow motion as I meet the new targets.

    In owning my own contracting business I definitely developed mental toughness. Just overcoming tough physical work and long hours. When Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey there was a large portion on New Jersey without power. At the time I was living in Pa about 15 miles from the Jersey line. Working by myself I was installing large 480 3 phase generators. Getting up at 4am to start my drive with my bucket heading to Jersey from Pa. Before reaching Jersey I already was dispatched calls where to install generators. Then each night getting back home at 11pm and up again at 4am. Could not get a motel anyplace in Jersey since most rooms where full of displaced people. The worst part was going back around to disconnect the generators and rolling up the very heavy copper cables. At that point I was totally exhausted and my arms were killing me. But whether or not it is working or playing sports I believe mental toughness is almost as important as physical fitness. One of my sports heroes was Bobby Clark. There was a guy that had type one diabetes and played NHL hockey. He had an incredible deep well of strength and mental toughness.

    Great video, Seth! QD: Peer pressure has helped me. I run with a running team (Dashing Whippets here in NYC) and by getting together 3-4 times a week for speed sessions and long runs I find that paces and distances that I probably wouldn't muster on my own, I can accomplish with the support of team mates. No doubt, the others I run with would say the same. I have learned to dig deeper as a result, since I've gained confidence in what I'm capable of, even if it seems daunting at first.

    Great camera work! QOD: I spent yesterday as an easy day. Went to the Park where eventually I will BQ. It’s a lil 4.5+ mile loop da loop that I WILL run 6x. I biked it with the kids and made a family time of it! It was great! The whole time I was studying the surfaces. The hills. The turns. The trees. The breeze from the water. The smells. The views. The sounds. The West Nile EEE mosquitoes. I was mentally preparing and taking notes in my head... thinking about where it would be easier and where I was gonna have to dig just a little deeper into my inner Hulkamaniac to get over the humps... I did a second lap after we did the first. I will go back again. I didn’t need to get off the bike to walk up any hills. They’re not that bad. I will accomplish this.
