@SubtleForces His stride length means if he were to actually go into a run he'd need to move much faster. It really is as simple as he covers enough distance per stride that this pace only requires a shuffle from him. Jess' shorter stride means she has to actually run to keep that pace.

Well done, Jess! This is what it looks like, when I go for a run with my son. He'll be just jogging along, while I sound like I'm dying! But it's absolutely fantastic for getting faster.
Jess was AMAZING. It's good to see she looks just as shocked and disorganised as me starting off the line 😂. The first 3km is hardest for me. I struggle to settle into a pace.
Wow, Jess is a beast! Big congratz, you really gave everything there! What helps me around kilometer 4 is simply thinking: "I did not already suffer this long and hard to effin stop now!" A strategy I like to use, especially when I'm running up a mountain, is to first ignore the rest of the hill in front of me. Then just focusing on how I feel at the moment, I ask "Can I endure?" and "Is this pain tolerable?". You might be discouraged seeing how much you still need to climb, but if you focus on any given moment it's usually not that bad.
The most impressive coaching I've seen on TRC...bravo Andy!! Jess is just inspirational! She gave 110%. I'm a 61 year old male who's been running for 15 months, lost 5 stone and would love the coaching experience to break a 5K or 10K PB.
I really like this channel. I also love that I can hear Jess's breathing. It is so important to hear the breathing so that you can have a rough estimate of what it is like to push to the limit.
I finally went sub-20 (19:52) on this very same 3-lap course a month ago! I went clockwise though - I feel like that gets the elevation out of the way quicker for each lap, then more of it feels flat/downhill...? Probably 100% in my mind, but it all helps! I was right there with Jess for that last 800m or so. She gave it everything. And yes it blows my mind how easy Andy makes it look. Great video guys ❤
With Andy’s humility, it is so easy to forget how good of a runner he is! Not just fast, but smooth and formed! 👏 Also, great job, Jess!! Incredible work!!
I could literally feel her exhaustion and pushing at the end, that's how I always finish my 5K's, 100% everything I have and completely spent at the end. Great motivating video!

This was an incredible run to show how max effort for some people is an easy jog for others. My fastest 5k time is 22:30, always wanted to run a sub 20min 5K but never stayed fit long enough.
Man that Jess can push soooo hard & for such a long time! I would've thrown up😱 congrats on the PB! Andy also just made my sprint pace look like a zone 1 recovery jog😂

The first 3km I always feel optimistic and then at 3km it starts to hurt and the last few hundred meters are torture. I know that more core training would help me, though, to reduce the pain in my abdomen during those last two kilometers.
What a team: one casually jogging and chatting and talking the other through her fastest ever 5K. Great to watch! Jess, I was almost screaming to my tv to cheer you on. You were digging so deep and never gave up. Congratulations on your new PB!
Wow! Amazing. Anyone else find themselves cheering on Jess near the end of the video? "LETS GO JESS!! YOU CAN DO IT!!" I can't imagine how difficult that was. Great video. Thank you Jess and Andy!

Jess is really smashing her PBs! I am trying to get below 25 minutes for my 5k time and watching any running channel video (but especially the ones where you attempt new PBs) is really motivating 🎉
As a fellow cyclist who also loves running. That was awesome. You've inspired me to suck it up and try and beat my old 5k pb from 2017 (20:22). It's going to hurt but great coaching and digging deep is the only way, as you demonstrated in this video...sub 20 is the goal.
Lets Go Jess! 🏃♂️That breathing got me. Insipring, hope i can do it that some day. 😊. Andys recovery runs are to pace the Running Channel to PB there 5k 😂 well done 🤙
Amazing job, Jess!!!! Also petition for Andy to record audio version of these coaching videos - I would seriously love to listen to this during my next 5k PB attempt (although mine will be much slower than this haha)
Great, I think the emotions and doubts apply whatever your target time. It resonated with me as a newish runner of 60 still dreaming about going under 30 mins for 5k 🏃🏼♂️
Excellent! I was thinking you would just make it, but 10 seconds! Wow! Great coaching on the run, but Jess had to make it happen and she did! Can't wait to watch the next attempt at a PB!
As astmatic myself, i cant do this. For me, 5k pb is 40:25 and 10k 1:25:50. But its nice to watch running channel and just do my best. You are great inspiration
Way to go Jess! I alternated between holding my breath and hyperventilating through your last K. I loved how you kicked to catch up and run abreast of Andy at the end.
Nice work Jess and Andy, so impressed with both of you, what fantastic pacing and coaching from Andy, chatting throughout! A 10 sec PB is really great work.
I love this video and content like this. Having Andy talk through the entire 5k is so helpful and incredibly impressive. The transparency that Jess allows us to see and hear as she is pushing herself to the limit is so inspiring. Sharing this one with friends. Well done.
Well done Jess that was quality. I'm trying to go sub 20 at the moment and watching this has made me realise I need to dig deeper! 20:22 atm but we'll get there. Well done again!
The 4th km is the worst. Always have to fight the “pukes” at about 3.5k. Thankfully our parkrun (where I do most of my hard 5k running) has a little uphill and a quick steep downhill coming up to 4K. I use it as a booster to finish with a fast last k! Congrats Jess on the new PB.

I think andy counted this as a zone 2 workout. Great job jess and andy that was impressive. As a guy that just started "running" its crazy to see andy glide to a sub 19 5k.

Jess that was AMAZING!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The breathing, pain and fatigue were real, but you fought thru it. Andy just makes everything look so easy, sounding like he's doing a podcast in a chair with Rick and Sarah.😲
She runs a lot! Congratulations!!! I still reach this time, my best 5k I did in 23 minutes, I was working to do sub 20, but I had an injury at the time and 2 years later I'm running again. Goals I have in 2025, improve my 5k under 20 and complete a 21k. Congratulations on the channel and to all of you!
That gear Jess dropped it into the last 30 seconds was nothing short of amazing and emotional. That feeling is so intense but so rewarding knowing you’re so close to the end of something that feels like the worst pain ever and you thought would never end but now you see the finish line and you somehow run faster than you did the entire race after feeling like you weren’t able to finish for the longest time
Kilometer 3-4 is the worst mentally for me. You're well into it and tired, but the end still seems so far away. I start wondering if I can keep pushing or if I can pick up the pace by the end. Fantastic job Jess!!
Great effort Jess! I was getting tired with you by the end but you dug deep and crossed the line. Definitely answers a question I've had in my training: at some point - hard is just hard! Push through it!
Running around a 19:30 I felt like Jess, who looks like she is just all out running. I found a guy in front of me who somehow looked in control and like it was an easy pace, like Andy. I told myself I looked like him and how easy is this pace? It was a useful lie that worked for at least a K.

1st min 180bpm...just maintain that all throughout....Jess has that FIGHT in her! Great coaching Andy!
OMG!!!!! You are incredible!!! -18:30 is insane! You smashed it!! Queen ❤🎉
Jess is really smashing her PBs! I am trying to get below 25 minutes for my 5k time and watching any running channel video (but especially the ones where you attempt new PBs) is really motivating 🎉
OMG, that was so amazing to watch. Amazing to see Jess digging so deep. Andy is a great coach and motivator. Very inspirational. Proud of you both.
Fantastic Jess you smashed that. Everybody needs an Andy to pace them through a run. 🏃♀️🏃👏😊
Incredible effort! Loved this! I don't know why... it looks like very hard work but it inspires me to do a 5K
Excellent! I was thinking you would just make it, but 10 seconds! Wow! Great coaching on the run, but Jess had to make it happen and she did! Can't wait to watch the next attempt at a PB!
OMG! I want to have such a pacer on my side too! I need it for my 25 min 5 k PB. And good job Jess!
When's your 25min pb attempt??
@@runningchannel In a few weeks!
Towards the last 4 minutes it was really hard to watch, but Jess really pushed through. She was amazing !! Grats Jess you deserve it.
Meanwhile me breathing like this on a 7 minute km today. 😂 Well done Jess!!!
I love this video and content like this. Having Andy talk through the entire 5k is so helpful and incredibly impressive. The transparency that Jess allows us to see and hear as she is pushing herself to the limit is so inspiring. Sharing this one with friends. Well done.
Wow Jess! You are amazing, well done! You stayed with Andy and he was looking like a casual runner 👏👏
Well done Jess that was quality. I'm trying to go sub 20 at the moment and watching this has made me realise I need to dig deeper! 20:22 atm but we'll get there.
Well done again!
Wonderful video--so much commitment from Jess, so much kindness from Andy.
Jess left nothing in the tank whatsoever, what a great run! Fantastic pacing from Andy too.
This was amazing, Jess really gave everything she had, even when she rhought she didn't have anything left to give. I am proud of her! congratulations on the PB!!Andy over there looking like he's on an easy run though, chatting at a pace i can only dream about 😅
I think andy counted this as a zone 2 workout. Great job jess and andy that was impressive. As a guy that just started "running" its crazy to see andy glide to a sub 19 5k.
Really enjoyed this. I’m used to seeing Jess be a powerhouse, but seeing her work so hard was something I could relate to when I’ve pushed to get a better time. Great work Jess, great pacing Andy and great video generally!
For someone who has a 5
K best of around 20:30 watching Andy basically jog seems like a different sport.
Well done Jess and congratulations great effort and well deserved PB 🎉🎉
That gear Jess dropped it into the last 30 seconds was nothing short of amazing and emotional. That feeling is so intense but so rewarding knowing you’re so close to the end of something that feels like the worst pain ever and you thought would never end but now you see the finish line and you somehow run faster than you did the entire race after feeling like you weren’t able to finish for the longest time
Well done Jess, So good I watched it twice! Really interesting seeing the difference between you both and smashing times I could only dream of.
Kilometer 3-4 is the worst mentally for me. You're well into it and tired, but the end still seems so far away. I start wondering if I can keep pushing or if I can pick up the pace by the end. Fantastic job Jess!!
This guy is phenomenal. Motivating and pacing at the same time. Hes not even breathing. Good job.
Awesome effort Jess!!
Hahaha whatever helps you get there!
Jess, lots of respect on that PB! Amazing! Andy, you’re a machine my man.
