Downhill Running Technique and Tips

  • Downhill running, is there anything better in the running world? Okay, uphill is my favorite, but when you get rolling with that gravity, sometimes you feel like flying like a bird on those mountain descents. Downhill running is an art form, full of quick feet, tap dancing, and clear eyes dead ahead....oh and a bunch of focus too. Onward and downward ladies and gents.

I had a pretty bad fall about 3 weeks out from a big race. Was running downhill at night a bit too quickly after one of my mates said something like "you're faster than me, you go first." Some rather large rocks appeared, I royally sprained an ankle, and had to take 8 weeks off. The lesson I took from this: just chill out, it can take a long time for your body to learn how to deal with all the angles. It also put me in touch with some people who changed my life, I'm now in the best shape of my life, so in some ways I'm grateful it happened.

My fall was when I was running downhill and said good morning to the uphill hikers ... sure enough .focus in the terrain always!’ that was my short coming .. it changed from flat surface to layers of rocks
Lucky I came with minor scratches !!!:)

QD: I was actually running up an incline on the Navy transport ship USS Boxer. My crew and I were doing sprints up the flight deck access ramp when my toe slipped into an aircraft tie down point which resulted in my ankle twisting and dislocating from socket momentarily. This was the beginning of years of ankle issues and eventually a surgery that actually led to me contracting Health care-associated MRSA infection and 3 more surgeries to clear the infection. Upside, I'm still alive. Downside, the fixes of the surgery were actually negated by the infection and I still struggle with running stability and all sorts of physiological related foot/leg issues. I won't let the injury prevent me from seeking my dreams and desires to explore the many wonderful things I'm intrigued by in this one life.

Pikes peak marathon 2017 during descent on probably the easiest part of Barr Trail I fell. My left knee took the blow. Got up finished the race. The great aid people / doctor sewed me up with 7 stitches. The remaining scar I refer to as my Pike Peak tattoo 😆

My main tip for descending would be to keep your stride short. It’s linked to what you say about being light on your feet - longer strides mean heavier landings.
The recent Golden Trail Series video of the Dolomyths race has some good footage of runners descending pretty fast.
I ran my first trail race recently, and managed to fall twice. The first was on a downhill, and I picked up some cuts and scrapes, but nothing serious thankfully. The second was uphill, and harmless, but apparently spectacular! I still did OK, so fairly pleased 😀

QD: I tripped in a boulder field during my first ever ultra (Lairig Ghru ultra in Scotland) and as I went tumbling both legs cramped. My goodness it was painful lying there on the rocks with both legs cramping. Tip of the day: when running across a mountain boulder field in blistering. Heat at the tail end of an ultra, remember to take salt tabs!

    Great insight here Seth!!
I was going for a Strava CR, it was an out and back or up and down segment. Went up just fine, was bombing down the descent. Got past the real technical drop offs and the steep parts. Last mile is pretty flat but still very rocky (Arizona terrain). I'm gunning for it and I took my eyes off of in front of me because there was a hiker ahead and I was just about to tell him that I'm coming on the left. Before I could shout it out my toe stumbled on a sharp rock, tumbled to the ground, dropped my water bottle. Rolled into the fall, scooped my water bottle up. Told him as I ran by that if you don't fall then you ain't going hard enough. We both chuckled and I kept pace and got the CR 👑
The best advice I have is to keep your body mass in the center at all times, don't lean back or lean forward too much at any given time. Downhill is all about quick and light feet! Also don't lose focus because it can get ugly real quick out there just like what happened to me. I've been running for just over a year and that fall (two weeks ago) was my first trip/ fall. Have fun and enjoy!

Running down Lookout Mountain I took a good digger trying to earn a PR (it was on the descent). I just remember thinking it was going to hurt when I landed, and damn it's taking forever to finish falling! Seemed like trying to stop the fall was making it worse, but in the end I escaped with a few bumps and bruises.

Hi Seth, thank you so much for the video! I've had bad knee pains and much fear of going downhill. Sprained my ankles a couple of times during my 1st trail race, ECO 30km and pushed through to the finish line with swollen ankles. Yesterday while going downhill, I tripped and almost fell flat on my face. I was lucky being able to pickup myself and gain balance. This video came out right when I reached home, super apt timing!
You mentioned 1 important thing, logs depths for shoes going downhill. Yes, I lack that in both my trail shoes, Brooks PureGrit & Brooks Cascadia. I'm looking for another shoe now, VJSports. Its a recommended shoe for both trails & obstacles racing. A couple of my friends are wearing them and they swear by it and said it's comparable and comfier than Inno8. I'm thinking to give it a try. Maybe its a shoe you can try on too.

My fall story was during the Run Ridge Run 25km in Vancouver BC. On a steep fast decent in the snow my crampon hooked a tree root under the snow and stopped me instantly. Luckily the deep snow made for a soft landing and after unhooking my foot from the root. (thanks to the help of a couple other runner who stopped) I continued on to finish the race.

  • @eightch1980
    @eightch1980 ปีที่แล้ว

I just ate it hard today on the downhill. Another tip I would add is, you are probably more tired than you think. Take breaks, don’t get moving faster than you can possibly control. I knew I was pushing it but when a rock rolled underfoot I tripped and didn’t have the strength I normally have to come to a controlled stop. I ate it, tore up my clothing and hands. Bloody. Luckily I didn’t break an ankle or wrist. I should have slowed down when the warning signs of fatigue began to show themselves. Sitting in pain and bandages and hoping this tip helps other runners out there. Be well.

  • @manfrummt
    @manfrummt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

One thing is to change up from small forward steps and go into wide reaching steps and even up there side of the trail. Changes the impact location, helps with fatigue, maybe a little more control, and it's super fun!

I have fallen a few times usually from tree roots I didn’t see! Roots have a way of hiding under leaves and snow. My biggest fall was tripping on a root in a switchback I ran down too quickly. I grabbed a tree to break my fall, but that made me fall backwards and roll. I skinned both knees and ended up with some bruises. Luckily I had a mini first aid kit with me so I bandaged and kept running!

Seth, when running down hill do you shorten your stride or length your stride. For me when I can I try to stride out but when it’s more technical I shorten my stride. Don’t know if this is right or not! Great stuff as always!

This is about when I had just started run-commuting. After sitting for a whole hour in a class I got out and started running. I'm in Berkeley, so the roads on the north side of the university are super hilly. I thought I was going to warm up on the downhill section. But my knees were very tight and my legs were not swinging, so within the first 10 seconds of running my left foot caught one of the cracks in the pavement (I was literally dragging my feet at that time) and I fell over and slid a couple feet down the pavement before coming to a stop with bloody elbows and knees.

Hi James, thx a lot for your videos. My story; I feel on a race in Zermatt Switzerland, downhill and I broke my collarbone and ac joint damaged with all ligaments. Was operated 2w ago. So now everybody is telling me I should stop, but I want to continue trail running, I even started to like the dowhill and gained more confidence. But it will be very difficult for me to regain the trust. I tall went so fast, maybe a combination of tired legs and not enough concentration for second. Do you have any tips for me, for my comeback, would appreciate? I am now out for 2-3 months of trail running, hope to te able to start in Dez/Jan and rebuild my fitness level. Thanks a lot

Luckily no bad fall yet on the downhill. Have had a few times where it was close, but having a quick enough turnover helped me recovery so far. On the other hand, I have gone down on a flattish part on the trail and an uphill on the road. The flattish trail was being over confident and didn't have a quick enough turnover to recover me from hooking onto a root sticking out. The uphill was at night, in the dark, being over confident and hooking onto a small bump in the road after which I scraped open my knee to the degree that I went to the hospital and was able to see white lines inside the wound. Yeah, that wasn't good, but was able to recover!

"random Mountain Goats"! as opposed to, ? Ha! LOVE YOU! this is an awes(om)e vid! thank YOU! yes, mountain descending on foot, on skis, on snowshoes...is just a 'controlled fall"...choose your fall line, c(om)mit to it, and dance it, baby! choose, commit, sustain. sustained mental focus is huge for descending! Meditation practice helps myself and my Wholistic Fitness students greatly in this. QOD; ha! my daughter, Dewa, and i were just talking about Daddy's podium falls! top of the podium was in the early eighties, was doing a running ascent of Mt. Teewinot in the Tetons, had on crampons for the final summit snowfield, summitted, flipped it, fatigued legs probably caused a sloppy step, my crampon caught the fabric of my other legs, Pete Rose'd it down the snowfield; ass over elbows! ilg was the man-who-fell-down-Mt. Teewinot! Ha! Just a little blood-letting, all Go(o)d! keep up the GREAT content!

I have only been running since 2017 - previous cycling background, however this video got me thinking about an incident on a school trip around 35 years ago. The class had spent the day climbing Mt. Snowdon in Wales and was on the return journey back to camp. I was way ahead with some classmates and every once in a while someone would come flying down the mountain. out of instinct i would reach out to slow them down and help them gain control.
without realising it though, i had begun to walk faster and faster until i was sprinting downhill. i still remember my body trying to push forward faster than my legs could move which was quite scary having no control. I still remember coming to a bend and knowing i would not be able to turn quickly enough, so i just dived to the ground and bounced a good 100 metres. i stopped and i was fine with a minor cut on my elbow, but damn...... did those teachers panic. i think the blood just drained from their faces as they were probably under the impression that i had tripped, broken multiple bones and needed the mountain rescue service.
i took the rest of the downhill route very slowly and carefully.
on to today. some hill training intervals. nothing major as i dont really have big hills near my home. however when running downhill it made me think of the above tale and how much more in control i felt on today's descent.

Would you say that small steps is key on any steep terrain? Everytime I downhill on hard packed dirt I beat records on my stride length to go fast and i feel like one day I will crash hard

Living in WI we don't have mountains, but I've fallen a couple of times running in the winter due to ice. Running in the winter you need to make sure your weight is always over your feet.

Great video. How do you like the Supercrosses? I just got a pair, and the shoe store tried to warn me against running in them, and said they're more for walking/hiking. Huh? Oh well. I bought them and they are working out ok. Wouldn't use them for ultras or anything, but was wondering your take on them. I'm only about 12 miles into my pair so far. My downhill decending story is once when living in Alaska I was hitting the gym, and dabbling with creatine for recovery, my muscles felt great, but were actually fatigued but didn't know it, and I went for a trail run up a mountain. On the descent, my legs had enough and my quad suddenly just gave out, leaving my knee suddenly locked up. My stiff leg launched me like a catapult and I ended up on my back 15 feet further down the mountain. Luckily it was a part where the rocks turned to packed dirt, so it stunned me but I walked away from it. Scary stuff. Listen to your body when it's tired.

My firstl while descending was kind of silly as I was on a wooden staircase and there was some rain previously and the surface quite slippery and I wasn´t even running, just walk speed overtaking the friend that was with me. Unfortunately, I fall to the side with no handrail but the trees on the side prevented me from rolling down. It was kind of scary but with no big consequences, just a big bruise in the back part of my leg and minor scratches.
Early this year I had a fall this time into some rocks while doing a technical section but I escaped in good shape. I had feared the worst but lucky me, as this time I was totally alone (as normally do)

Hey man. Please agree on me with this: If you're just starting to trail/mountain running, please oh please slowly on the downhill first especially on the technical terrain like yours. Oh man, I don't wanna hurt myself of overstepping or missteps on that sharp gravel/loose rocks like that. Hey, I love downhill running cuz just like u said, it's like u dancing in the sky! BUT if you're a beginner, slow jog/walk and run if you felt comfortable running.

Videos like these makes me wish there were mountains in Denmark, the tallest hill we have is 147 meters above sea level 😭 At least I live in an area that is fairly close to some great trail runs, but it will never be quiet the same as just small mountains.

I would like to know also because I have that same exact vest but cannot use it. Anything that I put into the front pockets (food, phone, etc) invariably gets tossed out as I'm running. There's nothing to keep things secured in those pockets. Otherwise, I think the vest is great, but because of the pocket issue, it's unusable for me...

Oh boy oh boy @sethjamesdemoor this is the best worse down hill crash story. Aug 2018 running full steam down hill switch backs Iron mountain San Diego tons of rocks and terrain and I come around corner and huge rattlesnake sitting in the middle of the trail and it starts to strike because I'm running towards it and I jump to avoid it and crash hard ending up with five fractures and ligament sprain right foot. No snake bite but took myself out of running for three months with DNS for one race.

Ond day in late May, I was going, or kinda running, down a flight of 472 steps, my right ankle slipped at the last 200 mark and I fell to the left - yes left - and landed myself on my left leg.
The right ankle swelled like a turkey egg but I was able to finish the remaining two miles home. The left leg had no complaints at that time.
One week later, the swell in the right ankle disappeared and both legs felt fine. So I went to the local jogging track for a 10K jog.
The left knee started to hurt soon and I stopped several times to ease the pain. I could barely walk the 10th K.
The left knee pain grew worse and a MRI shows that the meniscus, the bones nearby, the cruciate ligaments and the tissues nearby were all injured.
I was only able to quit the crutch last week if I walk slowly and on level ground.
So yes, keep your eyes on where you land, and if you fall, try to roll if it is safe to do so.
    Good luck.

another tip is if you have skiied before or mountain biking, its more like a controlled fall down the slope, if you pull hard on brakes you just lose traction and fall, rather follow the momentum

I think Euros are good downhill runners because of skiing. Skiing you keep your weight forward and you never brake by leaning back on your heels. Slow down by turning sideways. Also keep legs fairly straight and use calves and not glutes.

When I run downhill, I am good with being focused and using my muscles to help with the technical stuff, but the one big problem that I find happens a lot is that I get side pain in my core. It's to the point where I have to completely stop and rest. Any tips for fixing that? Maybe just focus on breathing better?

    • @ChadHiggins
      @ChadHiggins 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It's likely breathing related. I would say focus on consistent breathing where you are taking in and pushing out air at a consistent, non-erratic, rate.

Honestly, all I can think of is my knees riding in pain through this whole thing. I'm really looking for tips on how to have my knees not explore while going downhill... this video was great for someone that's never felt knee pain, but the "breaks" being your heels are just a recipe for disaster with knee problems and slowing down is exactly what has led my knees to almost pop out of socket going downhill. :/ I really wish I could have gotten more from this video, but i dont' think there was any tips on how to safely do this outside of working on your quads (which is great advice!) but just "doing more hills" doesn't seem like a good balance or good advice if there is currently knee issues.

Had lined up two babysitters for three kids when my husband was out of town to do an epic trail run.. 4km into it, I was looking ahead and tripped on a metal gutter line that goes straight across many of the pre-Alp trails for water evacuation. I flew, felt like in slow-mo, flat on all limbs. In shock, I hobbled along to find some dirty snow patches to clean up my wounds to see how bad all the flappy skin parts were. We all know how precious babysitting hours are.. well, I kept running, blood flowing down hands and knees like a warrior, so determined to make it to summit and back down as a number of hikers rubber necked. All trail runners have to have fallen at least once in their life, right?

Rest until it's fairly pain free. Keep everything loose and strengthen ur hips and glutes. This is very important. If it's so the first few run that's ok it's still getting it's strength but if after maybe 6 runs it's still sore rest again and start iver again after another rest period. Hope this helps man

@@isaacmartinez3605I heard Goggins say that he ran through every one of his injury's, fractures and all, and they all healed even with his continuing running. I'm not saying that is good advise, but I think sometimes we underestimate our bodies ability to really heal and be strong, and training really does make us strong. If it was me, I would do easier runs until I felt the strength come back.
