I mostly run two road marathons a year, for those I do a 3 week taper ie the last 20 mile run is 21 days before the race, the next two weeks I like to do 15, then 10 miles for the long run, and also reduce mileage a bit for the other runs of those weeks. The week of the marathon I like to go for easy runs mon-wed, no runs thu&fri, finally an easy 2-3 mile shakeout on sat. For minor races such as local half marathons or trail races I usually just go a bit easy on the mileage in the week of the race, and then only run the race at 90% effort.
Hi Seth, i think that for such high mileage, you're doing the right thing. You keep adding mileage to your legs, but you taper long before the race. It makes sense. For me who run tops 90 to 100km per week I like to reach that mileage on the week prior to the race week, then on the race week I reduce my training volume. For example for a 10km race, last high volume week: monday 10k Tuesday short distance intervals (ex. 15x200) Wed 8km Thur 10km Frid long distance intervals (ex. 8x1000) Sat 8km + a ton of stretching Sund 20km Race week: Mond 10km Tue 8km Wed 6x400 Thu 8km Fri 6km Sat rest Sun RACE
I'm just around a month out from my "A" race of the year, a tough 100 miler in the mountains. Still getting in solid training but I'll turn things down in the final 2 weeks, reducing volume but keeping hills and a couple faster runs. As much sleep as I can muster and just staying relaxed. :)
Thanks for confirming I am not crazy starting taper 2 weeks out. I reduced volume and vert last week, added a bit of speed, and then I’ll take 2 days off, then do a couple shakeout miles with moderate strides the day before my race on Sat.
Hi Seth ( and anyone) ... getting older, like everyone else and was wondering what your thoughts are about losing speed as we all get older. Seems going faster years ago was much 'easier' and now 'hitting the gas pedal' seems to take forever. Aerobically I feel great and recovery time/process is pretty much there, but strength and speed seems challenging. Any thoughts ... many thanks, really enjoy the videos and the positive approach to living ...
I've only raced road and trail marathons. My last couple marathon I've followed plans. Typically it's about a week and a half of tapering. Great topic and great video Seth! Good luck at Pikes Peak!!
I am injury right now three weeks before my next half marathon 😀 very important one in my new home town after 14 years been somewhere else . Hopefully bike it will be enough for recovery and build my fitness.
My go-to is a 2 week taper. Two weeks out I cut my runs down to 80% of normal, and one week out I cut it down to 50% of normal. Everything else stays the same but the volume is less.
QD: I'm training for my first Half in October and plan on tapering. Following a plan and listening to all the advice I can get at this point. I guess the first one is always a little trial and error with best chances listening to those who have gone before and then dialing in personal factors with each event.
I run the 1500 and i usually don't really taper i often do a track session 4 days before the race (about 90% race pace effort). Before a peak race i take a week easier but i still do one hard session at least in the week.
I tend not to taper more than 2 weeks and usually - I have a final hard workout 10 days out from a key race like a marathon. I find that a 3 week taper makes me feel very stale by race time. I am sure there are ways to do it that may not make me feel like this but every time I have tried it has not quite worked for me
QOD: I rarely taper for any race shorter than a 10mile. For a marathon about 2 weeks out and a half about 5 days. Usually a taper is swimming, cycling, stretching and Rolling.
I'm tapering now for my first Marathon on Saturday 12 days from now, my main concern is the freshness as my legs feel trashed so I'm reducing volume pretty hard. Kinda tough mentally to have gone a week with really low volume and still not feeling fresh, hopefully things will change in the remaining days until go time.

Thanks for the pace in km per min, I really appreciate it. Good video too :-)
Thanks Guy for watching.

Morning routine: wake up, go to cross practice, watch Seth’s vid, nap.
QD: Depends. Did 3-week taper for 1st marathon. 2-week taper for half. 1 week for 10K. Not sure if that's ideal but that's what I did!
Thank you for km pace 👍🏻 you are the best seth
Can you share your gym routine/workout for strength/maintenance? Thanks.
QD: yes i do, the last week before an ultra trail race or marathon. Cheers from Chile
Nice car

Had to stick my inner soles on 2 pairs of NB Beacon’s. Never had any issues with the Zante v3, pursuits or FuelCell Impulse

thanks for using the metric system
Learn a lot about how you do your training SETH....thanks for sharing....GOD Bless you always!
For a peak race I'll taper 2 weeks for 5k-half. Sometimes 3 weeks for half and more if my body needs it. I usually don't run 2-3 days before the race.
No run for days b4 race is a terrible idea

I taper from 2 to 3 weeks out from the race. And it depends of the race
Just bought a pair of all white nike zoom fly 3
Your Taper is speed is like my normal pace haha.
Run with Brad and it’s my race pace 🤣

Seth, will you be doing a race recap from a few days ago?
I'm tapering now for my first Marathon on Saturday 12 days from now, my main concern is the freshness as my legs feel trashed so I'm reducing volume pretty hard. Kinda tough mentally to have gone a week with really low volume and still not feeling fresh, hopefully things will change in the remaining days until go time.
i taper for 1 week before a 5k, 2 weeks before a half marathon, anything shorter like 1 or 2 mile races are 3-4 days
QD: I usually go with a 7-10 day taper depending on the race.
You do your strength work-outs in your running shoes? Or are those New Balance not really your "running" shoes?
Do you not lose fitness if you taper 2-3 weeks before?
How do we enter in the giveaway?

I normally temper 10 days before a race
QD: what even is a taper?
+1
Does your body weight exceed 100 pounds?
Prob 135lb
Awesome videos as always Seth, although cant watch everyday as I am in the desert so only 3g sometimes... and cheers for the kudos yesterday! 🤘🤘
Taper!!!! Fun vlog today!!
Rrrrrr second
First
QD: I taper 2 weeks before the race. I've tried 1 week taper and it didn't work I wasn't fresh enough.
Obviously it's good to keep runs easy, but surely there's no benefit to running 9:30 miles? Better off cross training to get proper aerobic benefit?
