  • Hi everyone and welcome to the channel. On this one, we are tasked with removing a raised area of the garden that used to have trees growing from it. Some of the tree stumps are small and then one is gigantic and i try tackling it with the chinese mini excavator. I also hire a tree stump grinder.
Stay tuned for the coming videos to see what has happened to the excavator and what i do to fix it.
Thank you all for watching, liking and everyone who has subscribed and is new to the channel.

Best way to get of such a stump is to dig out all the roots until they're exposed, then cut them, then dig a trench under the stump once you found how deep it goes. Here comes the hack, get yourself a a strong jack and some planks of wood or blocks to create a stable base and jack up the stump up and it'll come out. The easiest choice tho would be renting a large stump grinder. Either way not a cheap or easy job. Goodluck!

Hey Alex and welcome 👋 thank you for your idea and assuming a tried and tested way to remove a stump.
Unfortunately this sycamore tree has grown all over the place and has become a much bigger job that just digging around it. We have had to call in a tree surgeon with a professional outfit to grind the remaining stump away.
It was the easiest and most sensible option.
Thank you though, really appreciate you watching and commenting 😁

Nelson Mandela once said, "I never lose, either I win or I learn." Some days on a digger we win but most days we should be grateful that we are learning. You haven't failed Nick it's just a work in progress. Have you thought about using dynamite? It's pretty good, is only a bit negative if the stump comes down on the house. But hey that would make a good video, we'd enjoy it.

    • @everydaywithmenick

I like your style Nick. I had a similar experience, inherited a 6 in 1 laurel stump after the tree surgeon had left the scene, thankfully, three of the trunks were left at about 1800mm high. It had to come out otherwise the thing would have been the star of a Hitchcock film two years on. The one ton excavator, an axe, two aching arms and a bad back dug a trench around the thing, about 1 metre deep and then hacked away horizontally for about 3.5 hours and like you in the heat of June. We had an advantage however, a tree in close proximity was used as an anchor to which ropes, 5:1 mechanical advantage and a hand winch was attached. Under tension, the excavator continued to dig, the axe continued to hack, the arms ached some more and the back was aided by copious amounts of paracetamol. Your video brought back not so happy memories but it did the job and the root ball was dragged out of the hole, then cut down with a chain saw and removed.
We then had what turned out to be another 15 more stumps that could be ground down. We used a pedestrian grinder, similar to the one you had but we insisted the hire company replaced the teeth with new before we took it. The hire company would have been happy for us to take it away cutting teeth that were nicely rounded off. That I suspect was the problem you encountered and the fact the handle had no height adjustment.
There is always a way and you have the tenacity to tackle any problem thrown at you. You no doubt learned a great deal from this. Thanks for the reminder.

Hey Andy and thank you for commenting, that is a great story and sounds a great accomplishment over what sounds a monstrous stump.
That stump grinder i was renting wasnt the greatest and yes i believe the teeth were fairly worn out too.
That Sycamore tree stump are the worst ive dealt with, their roots are terrible and go deep and hard. I basically ran out of time on this job and same as yourself, the baking sun just beat us and in the end had to call in the pros who came with a much heavier duty grinder and got rid of it no problem.
Thank you again budy, keep on making them memories.

Well done Nick in fairness that looks a big stump and there comes a point when its not efficient to keep bashing away with relatively small machines. I took out a similar double stump with a hired 3 tonne machine and was sweating cobbs by the time I lifted it. It'll be a lovely job in the end.

    • @everydaywithmenick

Thank you bud, it sure was a hard slug with my machine. It didn't help that the collection of stumps went deep. I was told sycamore trees are notorious for that. Yea I'm going back to chop it up with the chainsaw and then it will only require a little grinding down.

Hey Nick. Been following you a bit. Stumps are a bugger. I read thru the comments so I didn’t copy someone else’s unsolicited advice. You should dig out as much as you can around that stump. Probably 4 feet at least, so you have the roots exposed. Then, on the three sisters there, saw down from the top 3 times to cut the stump into six slices. Get as close to the ground as possible without fouling the saw. Then maybe, just maybe, you’ll be able to break it up with the digger. I’ve used big hammer and wedges cuz I don’t have a digger yet. I think your machine would break it once its in sixes. Then your grinder can get some work in. Sadly, after that, yet more digging to expose more and more root. Finally, you’ll get under the beast, when you see daylight you have it licked. Done it with hand tools too many times, its awful, and backbreaking, and there is NO shortcut, except maybe a 30 tonner lol. Cheers
