It’s amazing how 20 years ago “min of deer” was the standard that all firearms were judged. Today you can spend $300 on a rifle and $150 on a Vortex scope and you have a rig capable of outshooting you. What a time to be alive.

As a small family farm, dairy farmer, actaully located in south central Wisconsin, I much appreciate the mention that people don't drink enough milk anymore. I also greatly appreciate the budget round up. I think you should look more into other budget round ups. Backpacks, pistol, optics, gear, etc. Finally, it's incredible to see how far we've come in "budget" firearms, not because I'm that interested in saving money, but now I can have more firearms for the less.
So, I'm 59 years old and I started out with the cheaper guns and upgrade do some decent guns. My favorite was always the Ruger rifles, which I have rugers and Remington's Savage. I don't think I ever owned a Browning, and I have Henry's Smith& Wesson's, Taurus, anyways, my go-to gun has always been for the last 10 or 15 years. Years is a Thompson center venture compact in 7mm08, well over the course of the last 2 years I rebuilt that gun but the only thing I rebuilt was I put Leopold rings and bases and Leopold 3 to 15x44 scope zls2, and a Boyd's stock laminated gray. And this year I went to Barnes ex bullets which I'm getting half to 5/8 of an inch groups out of it which I was shooting before nozzle partitions, 140 grain and getting 3/4-in groups. Love the gun. Glad to see that Thompson center was bought by Greg Ritz and he's bringing Thompson center back!!! Thanks for the great podcast and TH-cam,
For sure. My Howa 243win gets .355 inch groups at 100 yards all day long. I hand load, but this is an incredible rifle for the cost and I feel like the quality is significantly better than what some of these others are offering.

I love these series you guys do. But it really hurts me to see you guys not include Howa rifles on the podcast. I believe them to be right at the top of this list
I have a Model 110 I got for my first rifle for hunting in 2005 for my 12th Bday and just started reloading with it (chambered in 243 win) and that rifle shoots just under 1moa with the load I developed for it and never got more than 1moa with any load I made. Absolute tack driver.
@@its_a_longshot savage 110s are tac drivers. I’ve owned over a half dozen and every one of them is tac driver. Plus they’re set up. Features are so easy for any level.
Great opening gents! I always enjoy the contrast in personalities between you two and I'm lmao over this episode especially. Thanks also for the superb cartridge conversations - most interesting and enjoyable. You always provide plenty of food for thought re possible future acquisitions. Thanks for the thought provoking entertainment and Ryan's encyclopedic knowledge. This is hands-down my favourite firearms-related TH-cam channel. Keep 'em coming and cheers from beautiful British Columbia!
Had my XPR 270 since they forst came out and it has been excellent. Came with a Vortex scope mounted and for the price, the package deal was beyond worth it.
new Weatherby vanguard obsidian sub 500. incredible trigger, smooth action, hinged floor plate, cerekote, threaded muzzle, solid stock, available in 17 calibers!!!!! how is this not on the list with the obsidian weatherby did us the favor of making the barrels shorter 🙏🏼🙌🏼
I wish you had included either the Howa 1500, or its factory sister, the Weatherby Vanguard. They are well made, reliable, extremely accurate, and the base versions are less expensive than several rifles on the table.
to me factors like calibres available and length of barrel available options seriously relevant. certainly opened up my mind with your first choice after the draw first. . as for Mark being unaware of Billy Joel enough said. the Ruger, CVA certainly get plenty of reason to love.
Gave my buddy my TC Venture 7-08 about 3 years ago when hìs home burned just before season opened. I do miss that rifle, but I have a few others if I need them.
Friend recently picked up an RAR Gen 2 Ranch in 308. First three rounds out of that gun with plain old Federal Fusion 150g was 0.59”. We were impressed to say the least.
Savage just wins. KRG, Bell & Carlson , MDT , Hogue , and HS Precision just To name a few on stock/chassis manufacturers for Savage. Prefit barrels like crazy!
I have a Savage 110 chambered in .243 that my dad got me for my first deer rifle. Still have it and will never sell it. It has been a great rifle, and accurate! Shot a nickel at 100 yards with it.
Being a budget gun discussion, you guys should talk about what calibers you have on the table there and prices to be expected to pay with these rifles.
I LOVE the new Cartridge Talk series Mark and Ryan have been doing this year. I would like a comparison of the classic 30/30 and the new 350 Legend. I won't tell you which one I have, but with the depth and thorough evaluation you put cartridge comparisons through, I am very interested in seeing how these 2 match up.
I have the Mossberg patriot in 6.5 creedmoor that shoots fantastic with hand loads, and I just picked up the savage 110 trail hunter which is the model that you guys showed in 7mm prc when it came out Im just waiting on a chance to get it to the range!
I love my Ranch. I’m just mad that two months after I got mine they released the gen 2 that fixed all my minor gripes with the gen 1! The new ones are amazing!
Yeah I love em. I have ruger american 22lr, 22wmr, 223 gen 1 and 2, 22 250, 300bo, 308, and 450bushmaster. Gen 2 223 is great, I put a rix storm 3 thermal scope with a Griffin can. G5? Maybe it's Griffith... anyway, it's dope.
Just buy the Crest! You will not be disappointed. The winner of HuntLeague's Western Hunter last year won that as part of his prize package along with the Vortex Razor 4.5-22. That guy owned several expensive custom guns and says that Crest shoots as good if not better than any of his other rifles. His first group at 100 you could cover with a dime. He is a good shooter but the Crest is now his go to hunting rifle.
@@huntleague i just bought the sako S20 about a week ago, still havent even picked it up from my FFL yet. Theyre on sale for $999 for the 6.5 prc, I couldnt resist.
@@flynnryder7798that is a killer deal! Sako makes a ridiculous rifle. They had one of my favorites this year at SHOT. I need to look for that sale! Where did you find that price?

This is priceless!! A discussion around Wisconsin heavy cream masquerading as a budget rifle roundup! In the first 10 minutes no less. I look forward to these reviews, priceless. Thank you.
I got my wife a Savage Axis Compact in .243 (in the pretty "Muddy Girl" camo pattern) as her first rifle. Put a Crossfire II 3-9x50 on it and she got her first deer last year with it. I liked the rifle so much that I got one, also in .243 and regular camo, full size for myself. I even ordered the same scope for it. My only observation is that the bolt tightens up when opening it. Maybe it will loosen up with use.
The fact that Savage has 2 Rifles in your Podcast speakes books. The AccuTrigger is a Game Changer. All the mods and accessories for the platform are the next level to transform it from mild to wild. MDT and Vortex is made for each other and run perfectly with A Savage.
Heavy cream and coffee 👍tang safety does look clean but the 3 position has become my favorite. CRF also something I’m gravitating towards, Hinged floor plate as well. Great video guys
Great episode. I never understood however why people think the Mossberg Patriot was ugly. I think it's the most attractive of them all. With its classic clean lines it always reminds me of the M40 sniper rifle.
i got my savage axis .243 with my Christmas money in 2019 for $250 with a weaver scope included. obviously i shot out the scope pretty quick and now i have a Leupold rifleman with Talley rings but it is absolutely the best bang for the buck i have ever found
I know I’ll probably get a bunch of crap for this but my Mossberg Patriot in .308 is horrible. 5-6 MOA with M80 ball. 2-4 MOA with hunting and match loads. That’s always shooting prone or from a bench with a bag or a rest. Optic and rings are torqued and thread locked. I’ve checked the action screws before shooting just to make sure they are tight. Finally decided to try to accurize it with some pillars and bedding compound. Also went through and removed a bunch of the material in the fore end to give the barrel plenty of clearance. I just don’t like that I’m having to go through all the trouble to hopefully have a better shooting rifle. That said, you get what you pay for….
For those looking at the SAVAGE PLATFORM, don’t forget about the APEX model. Price wise it sits between the Axis and the 110 models. It has a better, thicker stock than the Axis. You get the accutrigger. You get the 3 position tang safety. You get stock spacers for LOP , but not risers. What you sacrifice from not getting the 110 is the fore end design with the improved bedding and the cheek riser adjustment, but that’s about all. Either way you go, you still get amazing accuracy out of the box.
You picked a great batch. Of course everyone will have a favorite you didn't include, but I was shocked not to see a Howa in there. I have built a couple and the nice thing is if you don't like one of their pre-configured versions, you can buy a barreled action and a Boyd's or Stocky's stock and you are in the same ballpark with a much more custom feel. My 6.5 Grendel is set up with a Boyd's At-One thumbhole stock and I really love the combo. It also comes with threaded barrels on most of their offerings and you can get 0 or 20 moa picatinny rails and a great variety of other aftermarket stuff. If I had one complaint it's that the mini action has their proprietary magazines required. If they made those work with AR mags, I'd probably own 5 hehe.
The weatherby vanguards and howa 1500s should have been on this list. Also you can usually get the standard blued tikka t3x in this price point as well
The XPR's are good rifles. Budget, basic and a smoother action than the other options (I haven't tried a CVA yet). To get a better action without breaking the bank, you need to go with a Tikka or a Browning X-bolt (plain Jane versions).
IMO Floor Plates are always better than proprietary detachable mags, but standardized mags (STANAG, AICS, ETC) are always better than floor plates. Proprietary mags are always overpriced and are rarely better than AICS mags. I could get three or four magpul AICS mags for the price of one Tikka Arctic mag.
just bought a browning ab3 composite stalker in 270 win with sig 4x12x44 scope. shoots moa or less depending on ammo. ammo is key. awesome gun and budget friendly
Interesting take on the Mossberg Patriot. Over the years I have read and watched many reviews of this rifle and they fall into two camps: it is exceptionally accurate, or it can't group under three MOA. That tells me that Mossberg has some QC issues.
i own savage 116 accu trigger stainless, in 30.06. it shoots really well, pawn shop for 300 bucks. i can’t complain, if i ever upgrade it will be 300 win mag.
One of the most accurate factory rifles I've ever shot was a Sauer 100. I think it, and it's sister rifle the Mauser M18, offer quite a bit for their cost. They have 3-position side safeties, detachable magazines that load and feed amazingly, excellent factory triggers and they share scope bases with a Remington 700 (long action I'd you're buying a one piece mount, like a picatinny rail).
because if it says weatherby vanguard or howa they refuse to even mention it, always have always will, look back at prior budget roundups, they always keep those 2 out. and refuse to answer why.
14:08 Highly accessible safety, is also easily Engaged to return to safe. Ready to fire, and something happens, you want to go immediately, intuitively, fluidly, Into safe position.
I bought my daughter a Franchi Momentum a couple years ago and it's really been fantastic. I have about 5 different 308s and this one has really grown on me. My only complaint is that the stock needs some kind of reburized coating like browning uses. It seems almost slippery, like a Glock without all the texture.
Ryan, I think the single "tube" on the Savage's has been around for a while. When I first got into bolt guns (a decade ago) I remember looking up videos and there was this group that went shooting prairie dogs with Savage single shot bolt actions and they had that same cut of the action.
Why do we not have the new Savage Axis on the table I know at the time of recording the rifle was available did you guys not know about the new Savage Axis basically gen 3!!!!!
I want a podcast on driving rifles! Red dots or open sights only. And I want a tikka battue featured! Also, a shootout between Ryan and Mark with charging targets
Love watching the review of these rifles but also highlight which ones come in a left hand model for us southpaws. Some of these do not even offer that as an option.
I own a CVA cascade SB in 6.5 creedmoor and flat love it. My grandson is using it now because of the spacer in the stock, gives him the correct LOP. I also own a ruger predator in 6.5 grendel and it is a fine shooting gun. I did change the trigger spring and have it in a magpul hunter stock., but a great gun. Enjoy your podcast thanks and God bless
For some reason, they're really hard to find in local gun shops around me but I wish there was more about the Howa 1500. I've been considering buying one but I really want to put my hands on it and see some reviews before I do that
It would be great if ruger had the 350 legend and 450 bushmaster in the auto loading format It’s a comfortable compact bolt action , built it on the ranch 14 body Great information
As to your intro question. I've been a life long hunter and former police officer in Louisiana. 56yrs old been doing mid-long range shooting since my start in LE. IT surprises me that people hear are just in the last 5 or so years have a grip on the sub moa concept. If rifle manufacturers start putting sub quarter mil on the sticker even some guys my age will be like 🤔🤨🙄
The mossberg patriot rifle I used to have was not anything to brag about in accuracy. Best group I ever saw it produce was 2.25” and the normal was 3-5 inches
@@ericbolen7054 What do you mean by "chassie"? Do you mean "chassis"? And if so, what is that? Not a stock? If so, what good is that? I've never heard of the term "lights out" when assessing something as good or bad. I suspect you mean somewhere on the good scale.
Some are saying to do the next tier of pricing, but i think before that, do a part 2 of this tier with the rifles that were missed! Then you can reevalute in a part 3 with the 3 best of each stage (perhaps time was kind to some of the ones you ranked 2nd or 3rd and theyll do better)
@@msquared9605 more flush fitting would be ok but even if someone could figure out an aftermarket solution i would be ok with doing that. As far as I know there's nothing out there other than converting it to AICS.
@@kbowen2251 someone will, give it time. Somebody made a “bottom metal” conversion for the gen 1 ranch 7.62x39 to accept ak mags. Also, aren’t the mags already aics compatible?
Seems like the only thing about the gen one Ruger was the feeding and the stock. So put on a different stock, and I am not sure what you could do about feeding except maybe modify the magazine action

Howa 1500 barreled action and MDT field chassis for $750. Pretty hard to beat
Kwik Trip is by far the best.
No Weatherby vanguard is a shame
The weatherby vanguards and howa 1500s should have been on this list. Also you can usually get the standard blued tikka t3x in this price point as well
Appreciate all the work gentlemen. Great vid. Take a break,do an easy episode. Say, a cartridge talk, on the .358? As always,
jmp
Savage is my pick
The XPR's are good rifles. Budget, basic and a smoother action than the other options (I haven't tried a CVA yet). To get a better action without breaking the bank, you need to go with a Tikka or a Browning X-bolt (plain Jane versions).
'This is a no frills rifle'
Fluted bolt: Am I a joke to you?
We need a video about Floor plate vs detach mag.
Yes!!!
IMO Floor Plates are always better than proprietary detachable mags, but standardized mags (STANAG, AICS, ETC) are always better than floor plates. Proprietary mags are always overpriced and are rarely better than AICS mags. I could get three or four magpul AICS mags for the price of one Tikka Arctic mag.
just bought a browning ab3 composite stalker in 270 win with sig 4x12x44 scope. shoots moa or less depending on ammo. ammo is key. awesome gun and budget friendly
the xpr shown is actually made by browning, thus imprinted on the barrel
Interesting take on the Mossberg Patriot. Over the years I have read and watched many reviews of this rifle and they fall into two camps: it is exceptionally accurate, or it can't group under three MOA. That tells me that Mossberg has some QC issues.
Love the mossy..just have to take it out of the stock and slap into a chassie..shots lights out
I suspect that the accuracy of the Patriot is dependent on the cartridge.
i own savage 116 accu trigger stainless, in 30.06. it shoots really well, pawn shop for 300 bucks. i can’t complain, if i ever upgrade it will be 300 win mag.
I think the savage access two has a rebate through the end of the month and teas have a rebate for the end of September
My 13 year old son shoots a Ruger American in .308 . with a break on it. This gun while loud, ear pro is a must but man that thing shoots lights out.
Why no Howa 1500?
because if it says weatherby vanguard or howa they refuse to even mention it, always have always will, look back at prior budget roundups, they always keep those 2 out. and refuse to answer why.
Ryan does love his Howa mini carbon hunter in 6 ARC.
@brian770 I have several Howa 1500s and they are all tac drivers. From normal short action stuff up to my 7mag. They all just plain shoot.
At 5:05 my mind said “that barrel is right at his arm”
At 5:07 he nonchalantly moves it away 😂😂❤

Highly accessible safety, is also easily Engaged to return to safe.
Ready to fire, and something happens, you want to go immediately, intuitively, fluidly,
Into safe position.
The best chocolate milk across the whole nation is Cass Clay Swiss Style Chocolate Milk. Mostly found in the Dakotas and Minnesota.
My savage axis is surprisingly accurate
Is your Savage Axis accurate enough with factory ammunition to take a deer at 300 yds or 400 yds???
Tikka is the winner!! 🎉🎉🎉
Spend a touch more and they cannot be beat!
LOVE my Tikka, I will never shoot anything but.
I watched the video twice and never saw the Tikka segment, they must've edited since then
@@wagstag89they didn't mention Tikka at all. That's just how much those of us that have them love them.
That ruger gen 2 terrific. Not being a top loader is heart breaking.
Mark was joking about needing a paper sponsor… my family owns a print shop and would happily sponsor the podcast 😂
I bought my daughter a Franchi Momentum a couple years ago and it's really been fantastic. I have about 5 different 308s and this one has really grown on me. My only complaint is that the stock needs some kind of reburized coating like browning uses. It seems almost slippery, like a Glock without all the texture.
I searched Savage’s web site and only found model 110’s. No Model 10. Where can you find Model 10 as shown in the video?
❤ love these episodes!
Why does Savage not have the Model 10 on their website? They only list Model 110.
Just bought my second CVA Cascade. High quality rifle thats not too hard on the wallet.
For some reason, they're really hard to find in local gun shops around me but I wish there was more about the Howa 1500. I've been considering buying one but I really want to put my hands on it and see some reviews before I do that
Tikka for the win!!
Those franchi recessed sling studs. Great on the rear. Front basically removes potential from using any bipods. Swagger being my goto.
It would be great if ruger had the 350 legend and 450 bushmaster in the auto loading format
It’s a comfortable compact bolt action , built it on the ranch 14 body
Great information
What vortex scope on the savage 110?
Really surprised to not see the Tikka on the table at a similar price point as the Ruger American ll and a couple others.
Couple hundred more kind of puts it into the midrange price point, I would think
It would be cool to see best budget rifles for shooting straight walled.
As to your intro question. I've been a life long hunter and former police officer in Louisiana. 56yrs old been doing mid-long range shooting since my start in LE. IT surprises me that people hear are just in the last 5 or so years have a grip on the sub moa concept. If rifle manufacturers start putting sub quarter mil on the sticker even some guys my age will be like 🤔🤨🙄
What was the good and bad ammo with the Ruger American?
The mossberg patriot rifle I used to have was not anything to brag about in accuracy. Best group I ever saw it produce was 2.25” and the normal was 3-5 inches
Exactly. They need a total redesign of the action bedding. It's horrid.
Never owned one but seems like all the videos I’ve seen they either shoot really good or really really bad
I have the mossberg..in the prediator..its shoots light out..under 1 inch..just have to dump the cheap stock and put in a chassie..i can show proof
If there was a hinged floorplate option for the Ruger American gen II i would buy one today...
I feel the same, at least a more flush fitting magazine
@@msquared9605 more flush fitting would be ok but even if someone could figure out an aftermarket solution i would be ok with doing that. As far as I know there's nothing out there other than converting it to AICS.
@@kbowen2251 someone will, give it time. Somebody made a “bottom metal” conversion for the gen 1 ranch 7.62x39 to accept ak mags.
Also, aren’t the mags already aics compatible?
@@msquared9605 these ones are. The Gen 1 had to be converted over from what I can remember.
Howa 1500 with a SWFA scope under a grand! A winner. And yes you can get them anywhere in the USA. Practical quality.
Seems like the only thing about the gen one Ruger was the feeding and the stock. So put on a different stock, and I am not sure what you could do about feeding except maybe modify the magazine action
Can’t beat the old tang safety
