Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

On the CZ, if it is a true rear crossbolt, that is designed to brace the mag box.
More 30-06 videos!!! Yeah baby Yeah!!!
I love the 30-06. Different strokes for different folks.
Jack of all trades from barking squirrels to dropping elephants. It's all in the loads
Hmu:)
I have three of them
I'm just now looking to get my first one debating on what brand...for sure not savage 😂
That CZ is beautiful but the savage seems to be the best overall, you can buy the Savage and a nice scope for the price of just the CZ but that CZ sure looks good.
Ron Spomer is “the man”! Always a pleasure to gain some insight from your videos!! Even my wife has her commentaries when I watch your videos! Hahahaha, really enjoy listening and learning from your years of experience!!! Thanks as always 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Those bullets hit a bunch of mosquitos and got deflected! That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
Would be interesting to see if things like that would make a noticeable reflection at 400 yards etc
@@eriksforestryvision8751I read erection the first time I saw the comment😂
My Savage axis quarter size at 300 yards I have many axis they're great field rifles. I buy because 350 bucks for a usable scope and rifle. I don't worry about getting them wet or scratches it's a field rifle.
How about a Tikka?
Not considered budget
You should include a Tikka T3x in your review.
I'll bet that one is coming tomorrow.
They don't want half inch groups
Yes, and a Bergara B14.
Yeah they went to 1,200 and about 1000 dollars. Tikka and Bagara are in that range some tikkas run $600 or so on sale. So yes, though I do not own either.
That CZ must be the grade a wood. The standard American retails for $750ish.
I'm loving this 30-06 week
FYI, the CZ 600 American retails around 750-800, much less than the MSRP quoted. I have one in 30-06 and I love it. You can leave magazine in locked position and load it like a blind mag from the top. I don’t think there is another rifle in that price point that looks so good or ticks so many boxes.
There's a higher grade version they might have been quoting.
The 600 Alpha is even less, around $590, I have a Lux, Alpha and a Range. They all shoot under 1 moa at 100 yards. The Range (6mm creedmoor) , shoots 5 shots under 1/2 moa, CZ's Guarantee claim, is it will shoot 5 shots under 3/4 MOA at 100 m with match ammo., I was using federal match . I think they had the MSRP of the Range, it's more of a bench gun.
I was a little frustrated when they couldn't figure out the safety, especially when Ron said, "we got to take the stock off and fix it"; I'm glad they figured it out.
CZ rocks...have have the ergo....trigger is great...Tikka way over rated
The clear winner, HOWA 1500. It's lightweight, shoots under moa/.25 inches with 150 or heavy 180 grain. It has every feature that made the Winchester pre 64' great, and added an adjustable trigger. Not so long ago You could pick up a barreled action between $400 and $500. I don't own a Mossberg but seeing the comments on here most say pass on them. The CZ at $1300 is not budget friendly imo, and the groups were disappointing to say the least. Thank you Ron, to test the HOWA 1500. 😊
I have a Savage model 110-E that my dad bought for me in 1985. Heavy trigger but consistent. Heavy rifle too. My brother had a beautiful Ruger model 77. Both chambered in 30-06. I always had better groups than my brother. We had some fun competitions. We deer hunted in the mountains of WV. I was young so the weight of that 110 never bothered me. Great old rifle that still shoots amazingly well. Sadly, my brother passed away 1.5 years ago. Enjoy your time while you have it fellas, you never know when things will change! Make those memories!!
Like to see about the pumps of the 30-06 .
Always love your content Ron ! Can never get tired of .30-06 videos.
I just picked up a Winchester model 70 Featherweight in .30-06 and I absolutely love it !
Looking forward to seeing the light mountain rifles video , would love to see one of the Tikka T3X Lite Veil Alpine 20” barrel in 7mm-08
No Ruger Americans? How unamerican!
Bring on the single shots next! This has been a real fun one.
THE HOWA IS SHOOTING 1/2 GROUPS IN 150 GRN, BUT THERE FMG......
I enjoyed this Budget rifles. Will you do some more budget rifle videos??? Thanks Ron
Ruger american gen 2 in 30-06 review plz!
Howa 1500 for me. Solid machined receiver with integrated recoil lug, excellent two stage trigger, three position safety, one piece bolt with sako style claw extractor. Upgrade the stock with whatever you want and be happy. It's a real quality rifle. Buy it from Weatherby if you want a nice stock out of the box.
Thanks Ron, love the budget friendly stuff.
You must have been desperate
To include the Mossberg Patriot
Alongside a Savage 110 and the
Howa. Even the Savage XP base
Is a better rifle than the Patriot.
How do I know? I own one of
Each of these. Two patriots.
They are both subpar rifles.
I'd say 1,000 dollars isn't budget for your average blue collar guy.
1,000$ for a rifle is the new 500$ rifle..
Chase is a great compliment to the show
I like bolt actions......but I also like my BAR and AR and Marlin 39A and etc....😆
ive had a 39a since i was 11yo im turning 69 next month
Where the Ruger American
i have a Savage Axis 30-06 with a Riton Primal 1 4x16 optic 600$ inv4ested [bought new] ana performs great
No Rem 783 .. love mine, shoots anything I feed it
Definitely loving the series on the 30 06, would love to see more on different calibers in the future!! Thanks!
little dissapointed to not see the Winchester XPR 30-06 make the list bought mine a few years ago. MSRP $609 currently can't recall price I paid a few years ago. Came with a Nikon Scope does well enough. I personally run Deer Season XP 150gr.
Please do a straight pull 30-06 rifles day. From 165 to 180 grains.
My bet would be on a Howa 30/06 being the most accurate if one is tested. Mine will poke all three rounds into a single jagged hole IF I LET IT COOL OFF FOR 10 MINUTES BETWEEN SHOTS. I hope that you have one for the test.
Well done guys!
Was there a reason you didn’t include a Winchester XPR?
On cooling the barrel, they make battery powered fans that you insert into the rifle action. These blow air into the chamber, through the barrel and out the muzzle.
Hahaha nobody reads the directions to the rifle on how the safety works
I’m sure any caliber will be another success with these week long series . Great content
I didn't like 30-06 at first......bad experience......I love it now
Love this 06 series you’re doing. Nice focus on the rifles
You should have included the really inexpensive Stevens made by Savage and eliminated the CZ.
I'm not a fan of synthetic stock rifles. But I seem to like a Bell and Carlson one. Especially on the Winchester model 70 300 win mag extreme weather SS rifle.
For me it's a good combination,
Great budget friendly rifles anyway.
Lots of people who complain about 30-06 recoil have a 30 year old hard rubber pad on the rifle grandpa gave them, $60 at limbsaver and it will be as soft as a lamb
I can tell you from experience, the Howa 1500 DOES eject those cases. Be ready to catch, or search.
I would like to see the 270 win.
I bought a Remington 783 30-06 a couple years back for around $350, i love the AccuTrigger on it, its an accurate rifle. The only things I would change on the rifle is replace the injection molded stock and the scope, although the scope isn't really that bad. The trigger came set at 2 1/2 pounds.
I'm a huge fan of a 2 stage trigger in and 18 to 20 inch SPR/DMR AR15, but not sure how I'd feel about it with a bolt action hunting rifle. Maybe a long range precision shooter it would be ok because you get to the wall and rest til everything else falls into place.
All the rifles shot during this video series have grouped REALLY poorly! Maybe a combo of ammo and the operators 🙂
The comparison between bullet weight and accuracy is pointless. It only proves that there is a combination on the table that works well in some of the rifles.
To truly accurize a gun, it needs a load work up done to find the harmonic nodes.
For example.....2 days ago I did 3 different powder charges in with 110gr heads in a
Sears 53 beater (post 64 Model 70) 30-06 ~ 3250 fps groups were 1.25, .75, 1.0.
I'll keep trying to dial it in.
I am absolutely loving 30-06 week and the 30-06! Cool to see its not kicking so hard that it wears you out after almost 3 boxes of ammo! And loving the Chase Ron duo too
Winchester xpr is a good budget gun as well
My Howa 1500 does not like 165 grain. I stick to 150 or 180.
Deet? Stinks, but works well here in Colorado. Eating a raw garlic every day helps too.
Sako 90 (pick a model, any model), Tikka T3X and Bergara B-14 hmr up sometime this week?
I love savage rifles!!!!!!!!
Skeeters for a couple weeks a year . South Ga we have them almost constantly. Almost year round
The Awesome 30-06
Ruger American Gen 2?
Why are the trigger weights so high in the US? Here in Germany you can rareley find a rifle with a trigger weight higher than 2.2 pounds (1000 g).
My rifles are all ~600 g (1.3 pounds) and I really can't imagine to shoot precisely with trigger weights of 3 pounds and more.
I had bought a use 30 year old Sako 75 308 win and I easily get sub moa 5 shot groups with it. After getting such accuracy either it I sold my old Remington rifles and bought a Tikka 300 WSM. Just as good accuracy as the old Sako I have, but I added a vertical tikka grip and a limbsaver recoil pad. My next rifle is going to be a Tikka, or a used Sako 85 finnlite if I get a good price on one.
My old 1969 Remington BDL shoots like a champ with 165 grain even with open sights
Ron, the way you were scratching under your cap...those aren't mosquitoes, I think you have fleas! Lolol, just an observation.
Been waiting on this series. My favourite cartridge!
Yes. Everyone has a different budget, but comparing $1,000+ rifles to a $500 rifle isn't fair.
Your budget rifles should have been the Mosssberg you used, a Savage Axis, and a Ruger American.
THOSE are low-budget entry rifles. I have very few rifles that top above $1,500 and they ALL shoot well. The rifles I have chambered for .30-06 are not high-end. I have a Mossberg 100 ATR that shoots 5/8" groups all day with my loads in all weights I have a Savage Axis (I don't really like it because of the cheap stock, but it shoots 13/16" groups with Federal blue box ammo, and so I won't reload for it). I have a Savage 111 with a laminated thumbh9le stock (that put the price up into the $1,200 range) that shoots CLOVERLEAF groups with reloads. I have a re-barrelled K-98 Mauser with open sights that easily shoots 2" groups with reloads (this is on its way to becoming a 35 Whelan for a bison hunt next winter).
As my most expensive rifle, I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye (purchased second-hand) that shoots 1/2" groupswith 165gr Corelokt ammo.
Being an "everyman" hunter, my scopes are not high-end, either, but I fill my tags every season, no matter which tags I get.
Budget bolts out perform levers and autos.
I love federal ammunition.
I know that the Howa is going to be one of the most accurate because I have a couple of them if you will test one.
My Howa 30/06 pokes 3 rounds into a single jagged hole when I let the barrel cool off for fifteen minutes between shots.
Hey guys not sure of it will work where you are but lifelong Florida boy. Avon Skin So Soft, will keep our skeeters and noseeums at bay. Pretty cheap and ya “stink good”. Probably not good hunting unless the bucks & bulls like it, maybe too much! LOL
Can we do a 3006 year?
Ron. Dropping floor plate with a picatinny rail across the action can easily be loaded from the bottom. Actually, I load ALL my floor plate rifles this way.
Open the floor plate. Turn the rifle upside down and point a bit low. Drop 3 rounds in. Close the floor plate as you give the rifle a shake. Open the action. Everything is ready to go. Chamber a round.
had me itching by the end... ;) love the '06 from the garand to my back up hunting rifle.. have several.. too bad that cz didn't perform better..
Intro music sounds much nicer in 1.25x speed
Thank you for all this work to teach and show us the rifles that are currently available at different prices...and the wisdom of your yours....
I own a Savage Axis in 30-06 just love it..
Yeah, Savage,..inexpensive, not that pretty and it drives nails .
And any dummy can change a barrel on one of those.
Take a thermacel next time!
Ron, a lot of the rifles like 180 - 220 grain. for some reason, also flat base bullets work well, which I believe those were all boat tails. Great Show.
Mine like 165/168 grains. With H4350 and Reloader 16 my groups are 3/4 inch and run 2930-2950 range (Rifle was built for my Grandfather back in early 1970's so 3/4 groups then was a very good Rifle and it was and still is).
Perfect rig 👍💯
Brownells has barreled Howa actions. A guy could buy one of those and then add his stock of choice.
I did just that!
CVA cascade would of be nice to see tested with these.
I'm surprised you didn't show the savage axis XP 2 ! I love mine having a match grade adjustable trigger and floating barrel is nice !
Japanese glass isn’t a disadvantage at all.
The Vortex Razor HD (top tier scope) has Japanese glass.
Japanese glass is slightly less high contrast and the colours are slightly less “warm”but in general Japanese glass is very sharp and has unrivalled edge to edge picture quality
Let’s be clear…though I’m not sure now but I do know that years ago Leupold used Japanese glass as well..but again I don’t know if currently.
Japanese glass was at one point simply the best optic glass.
I had some issues on two Leupold scopes back in 2009…Leupold..Leupold warranty shop insisted there was nothing wrong with those scopes even though the scopes would not hold zero.
I began using Bushnell elite series scopes snd never looked back.
After Bushnell install on my Savsge 30-06 test firing proved conclusively that the Leupold Vari X 2 line of scopes were pure garbage. I sent one of the Leupold scopes back one last time with the sight in target using the Bushnell Elite…getting confirmation Leupold warranty shop had received the scope..I called the shop and was rudely berated (true!) snd the dude hung up on me. I called back of course…spoke to another rep and aired my frustration of Leupolds inferior scope line. Scope sent back snd as expected..wasn’t fixed.
Just saying…Japanese glass in well built scopes..I’m all in!
And Leupold lost a lot of loyal customers because of shotty scopes that Leupold tried to market namely those Vari X 2’s with Leupolds Friction Adjustment Turrets.
I spoke to a Leupold sales rep at one particular event..he 100% said that line was a total flop and nearly 60% of those scopes failed.
Let’s be clear…the Vari X 2’s were not cheap costing..lower than Vari X 3’s but still pricy.
I now have approximately 15 Bushnell Elite scopes. Had problem with one of those 15..Bushnell “Replaced” that scope with a higher Elite model..no charge!!
Take that Leupold!!
Got a BCA 243 chromed spiral 20in barrel, fit and finish are second to none. Haven't shot her yet, but im sure i call reload a magic round that will make it a grouper. Cost 600, with mags and tax was 713. I'm dieing to see how accurate it is.
Mossberg patriot 270 wcf is one of my favorites feels like model 70
Hi Ron what is your thoughts on the Remington 783 bolt 30-06?
Mossberg makes great shotguns (I have 4 varians). I have no, none, zero interest in their pistol and rifle shaped objects...
My Mossberg 308 is not a good shooting rifle if you can get groups At 1 moa in rifle this day in age it's not worth the 150 $ you are saving I would not recommend Mossberg to anyone just because of my experience with the rifle I have
This is a fun series!
Got my cz600 for 600 new, never been more satisfied
You can’t beat a 3006 all around big game for here in Indiana 125 grain drops them in there tracks low recoil shot placement which you could do the same thing with a 223 not legal to hunt with here
I'm sorry I just want to see the difference between the 308 30 06 and all the mags up against the 7mm Ultra meg can I get your thoughts on that
"The 1/4" groups at 200 yards ''...
I picked up a Mossberg patriot for $350 Canadian a few years ago
Yeah Ron, love this UTube video!
Id swear you were my big brother!
I bought a beretta brx 1 in 308 a year or so ago. I was tossing up between 308 or 30-06 at the time, it came down to availability of the 308. I wish I had waited for the 30-06 now, I can always buy another barrel and mag for the 30-06 though.
That 308 will do anything you need, I wouldn't worry about the difference between the two cartridges. I would even say the 270 would be fine too.
@brianhoxworth3881 if beretta were chambering the brx 1 in 270 I would have gotten that instead. I've switched to copper projectiles and want to keep the speed up, hence 30-06>308.
Time for a Garmin
Howa always able to impress if you’re looking for value for money.
Howa rifles have been around for a long time. Interestingly…Smith and Wesson for a time marketed a bolt action rifle using their name brand. The rifle was simply a Howa rifle branded with the name Smith and Wesson along with a twin bar 12 gage shotgun line sporting the name S&W.
The Smith and Wesson rifle I had brand new by the way..shot very well and chambered in 30-06. Action was standard push feed and plunger eject. Smooth.
Jesus I really wished I’d kept that 30-06…some criminal stole the 12 ga shotgun out of my truck. But the point is…Howa is a well built rifle that isn’t expensive all things considered (I think I paid $200 back in 85..!!) snd mine came in a hardwood stock that glass bedded easily.
All of these Tupperware stocks now. Just garbage.
I will say however that most budget rifles will shoot good enough if upgrades are done. And I’ve had in my years expensive rifles that just wouldn’t group for snot no matter what we tried. So..this is why I always start with the basic rifle (Mostly) then rework til I get a good shooter. Repeatable accuracy that is respectable.
I’d rather snyvday shoot a Japanese made rifle than a Chinese made rifle..any day!!
Yes ruger CRF .Sako, win 70 all hight end.
Just let us know when your derriere gets hard and flat enough, Ron.
I’ve heard hornady say shoot 20 but never an old timer lol
Honestly, I love this format, I would love to see more calibers. Probably run a popular MAGNUM next aye?
you can change barrel on cz to diffrent caliber 👍👍
It appears that you are shooting uphill, will that make a difference on a true sighting in the rifle?
Not in any practical way. It could, if he were shooting at a very extreme angle, or at very long range, but at 100 yards any difference would fall way below the margin of error of the ammo and the shooter.
No…because it’s the same elevation…shot after shot and the same relative temperature/humidity, which at 100 yards…it’s not a factor.
In real life hunting in sharp uphill/downhill shots at long distances..to some extend yes. That’s at long distances.
At 100 + - ..just place the crosshairs on the boiler room and shoot
I have the trail hunter in 6.5 prc $520.
Not a fan of Mossberg rifles myself. They look alright, looks wise, but they are not well made on how receiver mates to stocks. Basically no recoil lug support, and some were breaking at that weak point in the stock. I like their shotguns though. The Ruger RAR, Howa, Savage Trail Hunter, possibly Weatherby Vanguard if find deal, are probably your best options for budget rifles at this particular time. Don't waste your hard earned money on junk, and I would consider the Mossberg rifles junk, compared to the other options, for longevity reasons. The Remington 783 is worth a mention too, and something budget, but better built than the Mossberg. Sadly T/C is still not making rifles that I am aware of, but their Venture was a decent rifle. A good shape decent savage 10 or 110 series would be worth looking into for a budget rifle as they always seem to shoot pretty decent.
