Yeah, but it was for our world, and my theory to make rupees not hyper expensive, corundum is insanely common in hyrule, making it a useful material for a currency, and why every Zelda game has a mine
+Rose BPOS Sadly there is an over abundance of diamonds in real life. But there is a monopoly on them because "a diamond is forever" crap so they are worth more than they should be. So perhaps there is a monopoly on Rupees. I dunno.
Hmm. I don't think that's the actual size of the rupees. Just that they would have to make them visibly larger so the player can see them easier and pick them up. Remember that only so many can fit into the wallet. Perhaps the area and max capacity of the wallet is a better way to calculate their worth.
+moromillas A good point, but Matpat can't just make guesses about what a ruppee's size might actually be. He has to go off what he has, and the size he got is all he had.
+moromillas Maybe he should have done TP rupees. Those things are tiny. I wish he calculated the rupees from all the games. The ones in the 2D games are huge!
Another awesome video! I love your more scientific ones. Although, I'm sure the size of rupees, especially in Ocarina of Time, are visually exaggerated to make them easier to spot for players. Similar to how many chibi-style games like Harvest Moon, have basically every single item greatly enlarged when held by the player character. This isn't to show that, for example, a carrot is twice the size of your body and you can somehow magically eat it a bunch of them, but its actually just the game artists means of depicting a carrot in your hand, if they made it life-size then you would be holding a 2 pixel orange thing, but by greatly exaggerating its size of the carrot, the player can figure out what they are looking at easily. I'm sure its a similar principle with the rupee's, if they made them actual-size, no one would be able to find them, especially in the earlier games. So the artists greatly exaggerate their size for some gameplay simplification. Though if rupee's are indeed that massive then your math is indeed correct. This is just another thing to think about. ;)
That means Magic armor costs at Malo Mart shop=$8,078,484,352.5 The quest to get the armor cost is=40,447,346,250 so in total you spend=$48,545,830,602.5

Since rupees are so common in Hyrule, they wouldn't be worth very much. You can just find them in bushes and no one even cares if you take them, so they can't be that valuable.
Tommy Marshall yeah, but it's easier for people to identify what you're talking about if you call them gay space rocks. I think that was his goal, get people to see what he was thinking about easier.
+Cowboycomando54 Their economy isn't comparable to ours since they only have one form of currency, rupees. Not to mention that rupees in the games are much, much, much more abundant than corundum is in real life, so the rupees would be worth much less in the games.
Wait ... If you could make a sword out of the rupees... The sword would be literally made out of money, and I don't know how well it would retain an edge or the hardness it might actually work as a sword :P
Hmm... Well, what about glass? They can be colored and give off a shine. Heck, they can be turned into mirrors. Glass is made from sand. Sand forms due to weathering, which occurs pretty much everywhere. Sapphires, however, are igneous. That means that they can only form from molten lava. Unless Death Mountain can create an unlimited amount of sapphires and that's where rupee production comes from, I doubt that sapphires are more abundant than sand in the Zelda Universe. Also, look at the shooting gallery. Rupees shatter. That wouldn't happen if it were made of the second hardest mineral on Earth. Here's an example of glass Zelda rupees, and look! They're so shiny! :D www.zeldainformer.com/news/gorgeous-set-of-zelda-themed-glass-rupees-for-under-20
Well, those arrows were being shot by a person who could carry and use that deadly hookshot, and don't forget that both the rupees and the arrows shattered
+Josh S OBJECTION! Hardness of a mineral only affects how easy it is to scratch. Even diamond can shatter like glass, but the fragments won't have any surface imperfections that weren't there during formation or cutting of the gem!
Thomas Manley Mercurz Z HOLD IT! That doesn't disprove my glass theory! It just... kinda... disproves my disproving of the sapphire theory. Hm... Okay then, how about expense? Wouldn't it be tons cheaper and more efficient to produce glass than it would to produce sapphires? I mean, it costs fifteen of those things to buy a freaking deku stick! Death Mountain is probably the only area in Ocarina of Time with the sufficient amount of heat and pressure to make sapphires, but even if rupees were produced there, it still takes a LOT of time to make them! Like... millions of years!
+Josh S NOT SO FAST!!! According to the lore of Legened of Zelda the Minish Cap: the Pikkori are responsible for quite literally for the various item spawns that exist across all the of the LOZ Lore by that standard its not unlikely that the Pikkori would have an easier time producing mass amounts of corundum crystals because of the minish magical properties (being able to change the size of people and objects) a spec of corundum could become an entire rupie by that logic
+Josh S But if you think about it, currently the rupies cost might be that high in the real world because of inflation and rarity of rubies and other gems, while they might be so plentiful that they decided that that is normal currency in their "Planet/universe", as an example if you think about it we used gold for a time as coins as currency in some places making the need for it higher and production of it making golds over all value go down, so the same may apply in that universe.
I really love the intro to these videos. Like REALLY FREAKING LOVE IT. It fills me with DETERMINATION! *Clears throat.* Erm... Adventure. It fills me with an adventurous feeling.
This video makes me so happy. The first video I watched of MatPat's was actually the diamond armor video and while I love all of his theories I think the ones where he just gets down and does math and still my favorites. Thanks MatPat for an excellent video.
+Maxrimus Same tome buddy. The first episode I watched was about people inside the Companion Cube in Portal. Episodes with math are my favourite since the first time I arrived at this channel I thought that was logic in video games sort of content.
BIG OBJECTION MatPat!!! You counted the value or Ruby/Sapphire based upon our world but honestly - do you really think they would be so valuable if they are to be found everywhere? - Honey, will you please cut down the lawn? - Sure, no problem - 30 minutes later - Honey, I found rubies worth of 100 Million $ while cutting the lawn! No let's be realistic - they would have no value at all because of "economic rarity law" or however it's called in English...
+ShiniOokami Well, the point of the video was not to figure out their worth in the Zelda universe (since that is like asking how much 1 dollar is worth in America, which is pretty pointless) but rather to calculate their worth in our world.
+ShiniOokami No, He's not absolutely right. Because plottwist. the reason Zelda's Family is always Royalty and in power is because their lineage possesses the Power that Link does, The ability to produce these rupees from practically nothing, Smash a pot, rupees, cut the grass with a sword, rupees And because Link is Link, he has the power to do it as well. But nobody else in their universe does, so its not that they're found everywhere.... Or Only Link Possesses the Ability, being the Chosen Hero. It seems odd that I don't think any normal person can or even is supposed to just afford the things that you typically spend all your rupees on, once you start getting into the big items, they all look Royal or of importance. And nobody wants you to own bombs, what are you, a terrorist? Ever read a Manga called "The Gamer".. I'd say Link is like that. He kills something, break something, etc, he gets exp and money for it, but normally, If other people were to "kill"/fight the same thing, they might get "stronger" like a normal person, But they wouldn't get money/items like him... Things that would normally be extremely impossible or rare, are uncommon or even common, abundantly so, for him. Or. You could be right and they could be worthless. But hey. That would make the chosen hero and/or Hylia/Her mortal incarnations, that much less powerful, to not have it as a special ability. And what would be the fun in that?
ShiniOokami you can read it at pretty much any manga site I've been to so far, if nothing else, Mangareader and mangahere on the same strain of things, There's also "World Customize Creator", its a little slower, in both the world and the releases
+Zachary Erickson (twilightwindwaker) yeah well i thought they were going to talk about why different colors of rupees are different values and take up different space in your wallet. we were both disappointed werent we
It also puts into perspective the values of both he and Mr. Pat, as well as the vast differences between them. "Not enough speaking lines", eh? He had plenty of lines mocking the scientific value MatPat was working towards.
Legion Entertainment Nope. You use "than" if you want to say something is better, worse ,etc.. *than* something different. And "then" pretty much means after. (not a synonym though)
+AquariusShockGaming Smash Bros. And More! The Rupee is an official currency in: India, Nepal, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Seychelles and the Maldives.
+ComanderScar They would be cheaper because you can find them literally everywhere. In the grass, stuck to monsters, at the bottom of pots, in chests, or even just lying on the ground.
There just one problem with your theory. You assume the Rupies would have as much value in Hyrule than in our world. But rupies are so common in Hyrule that the value of rubies and saphire would plummet to the ground
+Taylor Allen but he should not have done that, as the way currency their works is unknown. we may know about the multi colored rupees but not their value, or if their even real. they could be cheaper than paper money to produce
This video is based off the assumption that the value of rubies is the same in their world as it is in ours. Rubies are largely valued because of their scarcity (although they have some scientific applications, these are things we can dismiss in the Zelda universe), but there's not any guarantee that corundum is as scarce in the Zelda universe as it is in ours. The value of a rupee at $13,492,488.75 is what it would be worth in this universe (also not what it would sell for, since finding a buyer for a single uncut gemstone of that size would be really tricky), but it could be that their only (or at least primary) worth in the Zelda universe is for their fiat value (the value ascribed to them by central governing bodies). And yes, I spend far too long thinking about video game economics as well.
+Drakan R Which is why this "theory" is bunk. It's only taking into the account what we see in the world, and not what Link holds above his head. The rupees he holds above his head is bigger than the palm of his hands, which is still ridiculously big for a gemstone.
He's only going off the math he had previously known. He couldn't go off any other games except Ocarina because Link could be a different height, meaning he has to start completely from scratch. He can't do anything Link pulls from chests since you can't see all of him, and have to estimate the sizes. So, no, the theory makes sense, the explanation is sound.
Omgosh he reads creepypasta? ????? DO A THEORY DO A THEORY DO A THEORY! !!!! (5 mins later) Sorry everyone for the weird overeaction but it's so hard to find people like these into the fringe horror (official term, sad but true) area. It gets demonized so often I'm just happy. Plus I want him to do a theory on ben drowned.
His hair is like an emo tumbleweed. I never realized emos and tumblweeds had so much in common. They're both sad and alone. And roll around in the desert.
***** but I mean that's like saying "omg I ship goku and chi chi so hard" when they're already married. It's like, the ship has sailed and it's doing great xD so it wouldn't matter wether people "ship it" or not. Do you at least see my point of view now?
So I just got a job in a jewelry shop and when I was being taught about gemstones, this episode really came in handy. "So did you know that rubies are just red sapphires?" "Why yes.... yes I did."
I'm just going to take a moment to acknowledge the animation at 9:15 where the rupee spins. That probably took a lot of effort, but I guess I wouldn't really know. It looked like it would be hard to animate.
There is only one problem that i can see in this theory. Rarity. If a gem is commonly found and the common shine is what link is carrying then It isn't that expensive in his universe. Yes to have a "rupee" in our universe it would be that expensive... However you can't say link is paying that much for the bombs because rupees are so common that it isn't like your parting with millions of dollars for five bombs.
+Ziluth I thought the point was to say that how much one rupee would be worth in our world. Of course they're not worth THAT much in the Zelda universe. They're everywhere.
i was thinking the same thing but that brings up another question. why arent ther more rupies floating around for decoration. if theyr that common people should probly be throwing them out with the trash or hoarding them. realisticly this destroys the economy of the game because money is worthless. if theres no money then all cost is based on arbitrary numbers. this means that they hold other real world value. the only thing i can think of is to sustain life. if all sentient species accept rupees as payment i can only conclude that they all stem from a common ancester. a species that has evolved over millenia according to the location that they chose to live in
that's right. Now let's take this thought further. Link's magical world has an abundance of shiny minerals scattered around the land. every 3 meters you walk, dig or swim, there will be at least 1 heavy green crystal of hexagonal shape. Beyond making the world alive, warm, smart and leaving behind the triforce, the goddesses felt something was missing. So they scattered these shiny minerals accross their creation, making it a natural catwalk for their eventual return.
+Ziluth It was like that with some other commodities as well. Pepper per pound was worth more than gold per pound. But now because it more abundant it not as expensive.
No, you are Indian so the rupee is the currency of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia (rupiah), Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives (rufiyaa), and formerly Afghanistan and Myanmar. The Indian Rupee is the currency of India but "The Rupee" is not the currency of any single country. I don't really understand the point of this comment.
I'll never get over how intelligent MatPat is. I was listening to the maths stuff and just sitting here like "Wow...i'm so confused." maths has never been my strong subject.
+Gabe Newell Yep, If a single Green Rupee is really that huge then I'd like to know how they consider the Wallet useless. That rupee's bigger than a bomb.
ChillTerumi Because these rupees are extremely huge and he carries around hundreds of them. Obviously this wallet has magical properties. That his pockets alone can't accommodate.
Kaegan McDonald Well, when the whole deal of keeping gigantic things inside of your pocket is never explained in the game, why should it be explained how you're able to get your money in the middle of all your other stuff?
doesn't that call into question the economy of the kingdom of Hyrule? If a single unit of currency is worth $13,492,448.75. That's got to be some serious inflation. And wouldn't finding them literally laying in the grass by the dozens cause deflation?
+PMW3 It's entirely possible that at some point in Hyrulian history a enormous amount of rubies and sapphires were discovered, and so many of them being around made them worthless (with green being the most common). It's also possible that underneath the surface of the LoZ world there is an abundance of rubies and sapphires. In other words, in our world the gems are expensive because they are rare, but that may not be the case in LoZ.
5:54 - All of a sudden I really want a Jolly Rancher.

That's exactly what I was thinking. In a world made of diamond, diamonds are worthless.
MyCockatielScreams Well, maybe there's some way to measure the size of the wallet in-game.
Wait! What if link's wallet is a TARDIS from doctor who? It could be bigger on the inside!
+Aidan Hamer I guess we can say it is a Wibbly Wobbly Wallet
+moromillas Maybe he should have done TP rupees. Those things are tiny. I wish he calculated the rupees from all the games. The ones in the 2D games are huge!
Way to go guys, this episode was a real GEM. Eh? Ehhh? :D

We NEED more collaboration videos from MatPat and PBG
This is just another thing to think about. ;)
+Gnoggin Yeah, I felt something was a little off with this video.
Gnoggin do a video on how the golden path from far cry 4 are terriosts.
That means Magic armor costs at Malo Mart shop=$8,078,484,352.5
The quest to get the armor cost is=40,447,346,250
so in total you spend=$48,545,830,602.5
And you need to power the armor with rupees.

Since rupees are so common in Hyrule, they wouldn't be worth very much. You can just find them in bushes and no one even cares if you take them, so they can't be that valuable.
+bob harrysville Another video going more into the economy of Hyrule would be cool, I don't know how you would do that though.
+bob harrysville
Seeing as how we're the only person who uses these shops, at least expressly shown in the game.

But in IRL you can't find them in bushes, yes?

+Cowboycomando54 And in the first game, some enemies give you like 50 rupees if you find their hideout.
+Cowboycomando54 well look at how common they are
+Cowboycomando54
Their economy isn't comparable to ours since they only have one form of currency, rupees. Not to mention that rupees in the games are much, much, much more abundant than corundum is in real life, so the rupees would be worth much less in the games.
i really want to cut some grass now
Carful dude! You could Break the ruby itself!

green is not a creative color
www.zeldainformer.com/news/gorgeous-set-of-zelda-themed-glass-rupees-for-under-20
Well, those arrows were being shot by a person who could carry and use that deadly hookshot, and don't forget that both the rupees and the arrows shattered

You counted the value or Ruby/Sapphire based upon our world but honestly - do you really think they would be so valuable if they are to be found everywhere?
- Honey, will you please cut down the lawn?
- Sure, no problem
- 30 minutes later
- Honey, I found rubies worth of 100 Million $ while cutting the lawn!
No let's be realistic - they would have no value at all because of "economic rarity law" or however it's called in English...
+ShiniOokami
Hmm, you're absolutely right.
YOUR HONOR, THAT TESTIMONY IS BULLSHIT.
+ShiniOokami Well, the point of the video was not to figure out their worth in the Zelda universe (since that is like asking how much 1 dollar is worth in America, which is pretty pointless) but rather to calculate their worth in our world.
+ShiniOokami No, He's not absolutely right.
Because plottwist.
the reason Zelda's Family is always Royalty and in power is because their lineage possesses the Power that Link does, The ability to produce these rupees from practically nothing, Smash a pot, rupees, cut the grass with a sword, rupees
And because Link is Link, he has the power to do it as well.
But nobody else in their universe does, so its not that they're found everywhere....
Or Only Link Possesses the Ability, being the Chosen Hero.
It seems odd that
I don't think any normal person can or even is supposed to just afford the things that you typically spend all your rupees on, once you start getting into the big items, they all look Royal or of importance.
Kurzidan Your "The gamer Manga" sounds interesting - sauce maybe?
ShiniOokami
you can read it at pretty much any manga site I've been to so far, if nothing else, Mangareader and mangahere
on the same strain of things, There's also "World Customize Creator", its a little slower, in both the world and the releases

I feel like that you're missing something MatPat
the rarity of the "Rupies" in the game
There just one problem with your theory. You assume the Rupies would have as much value in Hyrule than in our world. But rupies are so common in Hyrule that the value of rubies and saphire would plummet to the ground
He didn't do it for Hyrule though
He did it for our real world equivalent
That's something you've always gotta remember when watching these
+Taylor Allen but he should not have done that, as the way currency their works is unknown. we may know about the multi colored rupees but not their value, or if their even real. they could be cheaper than paper money to produce
my thought exactly
Hes just talking about HERE
+Kevin Cunningham You're right, but that's kind of uncalled for.
He is talking about if we somehow found an exact copy of a rupee, how much cash we'd get from selling it
Wait, but when link pulls out a rupee from a chest it looks way smaller, in fact those fit in his hand
+Drakan R
Which is why this "theory" is bunk. It's only taking into the account what we see in the world, and not what Link holds above his head. The rupees he holds above his head is bigger than the palm of his hands, which is still ridiculously big for a gemstone.
+Zeldagigafan It'd make much more sense to use Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword rupees instead, as they are much less ridiculous in size.
TsukuneD While they certainly are less ridiculous in terms of size, they are still about as big as the palm of the hand.
***** They seem to be as big as the new Real bill here in Brazil. At least in height. As a reference, it's 3/4 the American Dollar bill.

Is it just me or is the intro song for the game theory addicting
Y E S
Yes
Yes
Y E S
Yes definitely
A rupee is Indian currency with Gandhi's face on it.
And of a country named Nepal
India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia (rupiah), Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives (rufiyaa), and formerly Afghanistan and Myanmar.
