Callas gives "justification" to this music. Not that "Cavalleria" needs justification, but Callas by her interpretation shows how great the music is. In a sense, she makes it great. To me, her greatness begins and ends with her musicianship, and yet I think on stage the music and drama became inseparable.
Once again Callas reminds us how she always extracts something deeper out of everything she sang than anyone else did. There are plenty of other old singers who sang this absolutely beautifully and perfectly with passion, good technique, chest voice, drama and all that. But Callas brings out an extra layer of inner turmoil that is somehow always true and yet simple as if it should have always been obvious and there. Such was the profundity of her work

Max, usually I don't like 'improved' sound, but you do an incredible job. Thank you. Everyone says her Norma can't be beat, Traviata, etc. but when you listen to this, and her Butterfly comes to mind also, roles she wasn't identified with, my god she put her stamp on all of them. Who can beat this interpretation. (Ok, I know someone is going to respond and tell me to listen to so and so, and I will, but hey, I will always come back to Callas. Fabulous, what an artist!!!!!!

1953: une grande année pour Callas. Ici, le son est parfait, la voix l'est aussi. Mais il y manque une touche de verisme, un côté Maria Bieshu: dans les aigus elle explose comme à son habitude et peut-être un peu trop, et dans les graves je ne suis pas sûr que la technique ne prime pas sur le sentiment. Mais au final c'est quans même pas mal, je veux dire par là très bien. Sauf que j'aime bien prendre mon pouce quand j'écoute de l'opéra, prendre mon pied ne me suffit pas.
