- Bongiwe Nakani from South Africa (mezzo-soprano) sings "Voi lo sapete" from Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni in the final concert of NEUE STIMMEN 2015.
The final was accompanied by the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra, led by the English conductor Graeme Jenkins.
Recorded on October 24, 2015 in Gütersloh, Germany.

Listen everyone, here is a very special voice. No excessive vibrato so common these days, great expressive singing, many absolutely glorious notes, a slight edge to the voice which gives distinct character. All in all the promise of an outstanding operatic singer to be favourably compared with the greats of the past. This was recorded 7 years ago yet I’ve never encountered her before. I can’t find any reference to her performing on the major opera stages?

Miss Nakani, what is the role that you’ve played that has felt the most ‘you’ in terms of voice?
This was definitely the most interesting voice in the competition. Nakani often reminded me of the wonderful Florence Quivar. Whether she should be singing this dramatic aria at this early stage of here career is questionable. One hopes that she will wait another 10 years before tackling roles like Santuzza. By contrast Ulrica seemed to hold no problems for her and the Rossini was stunning. With good nurturing this is a voice that could shoot to join Yende on the major opera house circuit.
Her last professional opera performance was in 2021 in Cape Town. It seems your prophecy has come true

la cantante deve appoggiarsi sul colore e la bellezza divina della voce!
questa bravissima giovane donna ha fatta una scelta sbagliatissima di cantare Santuzza con la voce del soprano.Santuzza si deve affrontare con il colore del contralto e non quello del soprano...
questa bravissima ragazza doveva entrare nel personaggio con la sua vera voce,con la stessa voce con la quale cantava Ulrica...
e così poteva vincere il concorso...
Siamo sempre lì: mancano i direttori di una volta che indirizzavano i cantanti..Questi bravissimi cantanti sono lasciati soli a se stessi...

Santuzza è un personaggio che vive una forte sofferenza interiore, un ruolo difficile da interpretare.
Questa artista comunque ha una bella voce ed ha compiuto una buona esibizione. Inoltre è ancora giovane, con molto margine di miglioramento con un buon maestro.

This is a beautiful mezzo aria in the style of verismo. Miss B. Nakani's voice is also beautiful but she perhaps wasn't ready for this aria yet. This aria requires absolutely fulfilled bel canto singing with wide, very musical legatos and rich, a bit more matured voice, representing the depth of emotions.
In 'opera verismo' it is a MUST and she wasn't able to deliver this depth and quality here in my opinion. Hopefully she already has improved a lot (2018 now ) at singing, progressed to become more matured with her beautiful voice and talent. :) Thanks

It's a soprano role, just lower in tessitura. The composer's favorite Santuzza was Lina Bruna Rasa who was very much a soprano. Further, he went on to state his dislike of mezzos singing the role.

Girl, don´t sing the heavy stuff too soon. It sounds like a little bird is trying to scream like an eagle. Stick with proper roles and approach slowly towards the more dramatic repertory.

It's all about proper technique which she technically doesn't have... there isn't any scuro let alone chest notes in her voice, only chiara. Meh, no hope in any modern opera singer except Saioa Hernandez
