Just spend the evening listening to two other interpretation of Armida. Though Callas 's Armida seemed to the summom of the art, I thought I should give other artist a chance to prove me wrong. So I've listen to Renee Fleming which left me feeling cheated due to the fact that part of the score was missing. I felt lost. Than I listen to a concert of Armida. The concept was new to me but to my surprise it was actually very good. Here I must apologize for I can't recall the names of the artist who participated. Third and lastly I listen to this glorious partition with none other than the phenomenal Callas. Needless to say who came on top. I wouldn't want to be unfair to miss Fleming for I had the pleasure of seeing her in other operas. She has no doubt a great deal of talent, I just think that for this particular role Callas is unbeatable.

We all know how Violetta and Norma were Callas' cult roles to the point of believing that Callas herself does not play the two characters but embodies them; some also add Tosca, Macbeth and others but couldn't it be that the true "Callas role", the one in which she will remain truly unsurpassed, is this one of Armida?
