Am I Crazy to build a 4,500 Gallon DIY Aquarium?

- Work and some home improvement projects have split grabbed some of my time away from building the 4500 gallon, but that doesn't mean that I haven't made huge progress on the fiberglass work. Of course their is also the fish basement to maintain and we have some sick fish to cure and a lighting upgrade on the River Bend Aquarium!

All fishkeepers are crazy to some degree. And in full honesty, the majority of fish keepers dream of having a tank like this, myself included. 😆 Good on you for making a dream a reality!

Your 600 gallon tank would be the perfect candidate for a large protein skimmer and an ozone generator.
The 600 marine aquarium is plumbed to together with both a 600 gallon refugium sump and the in wall 265 marine aquarium, and there is a large protein skimmer in the sump. I have never messed with ozone yet. 😊
Such a huge tank, you'd be able to swim in it if you want!

Keeping those costs down is a major part of the design, definitely something to always be mindful of. :-)

I feel like this tank needs a pacu. Its from the orinico just like the p bass. It would be cool to see one housed like this. Plus it's an herbivore so no overgrown plants😅
I don't know...I feel like Pacu will just grow even bigger if you put them in a bigger tank...I am not sure if they ever stop growing lol 😀

Hey Wagner! I can't say for sure when the tank will be done, I would like it done as soon as possible. 😀 Probably about 2 months or so until fully up and running.
Any possibility of showing how you actually apply the fiberglass and resin? Maybe some old b-roll lying around just so we can see how it’s actually done? Amazing build-whose got the bigger project, you or AlexG?
I will include some footage of doing the fiber glassing in the next video. Alex and my projects are very similar in size, but very different in materials and design...shows how many different ways there are to do diy...not to mention the concrete and metal diy guys lol 😄

Is there anyway to get a little more light on the back of the 750 riverbank? It sucks we cant see any of that awesomeness when the tank is full
Maybe a submersible light like Serpa design did on one of his large tanks
I could probably beef up the led spot lights on the back...I think they are 50 watts each right now...I have a bunch of 100 watt ones I could swap in. I am going to be tinkering with those lights sometime soon..so will take a look and possibly beef up the rear lights.

Where do you get your aquarium sand?
For saltwater tanks I like to use HTH pool filter sand (very white) and for freshwater tanks I use Sakrete play sand (light tan color).

Yes, I will total up the cost of the build and also put out a video that shows the build process from start to finish.

My home is on a well, so no chemicals to remove.

You make great vids and obviously have lots of skill. Have you considered training young people? Kind of like OFR help with community work? I know you couldn't let people go nuts on your builds but I think you could spread a lot of wisdom and help troubled kids...... it would be great for your channel and you are in that unusual spot of being a boss and mentor.
Interesting idea. I think the toughest part would just be the timing logistics...I do most of my work in the late evening after my day job and family duties are done.

I appreciate the offer, but I only have a grow out tub for quarantine right now and it is full of Oscars. I am planning on building a proper quarantine system, but it is many months away .

Out of sheer curiosity for kicks and giggles... have you, in planning states, cogitated to do anything like buying a fiberglass above ground pool and just cutting out a hole for windows or hiring those boat fiberglass people that come with a giant firehose and just spray it all over the place? This must be very tiresome, not to mention probably high as a kite even with all the ventilating... smell must be out of this world whilst you are applying the darn thing. Such a cool project.
From my experience any sort of pre-built pool or tank wouldn't fit through the doors of the room and would have to be in the space before the walls were finished. This would of course make building and finishing the room very difficult. Also anything of this scale would cost a ton if purchased pre-built.
I prefer to build it myself custom so that I can make it exactly like I want it to be...really too big of a project to undertake and not get an end result that isn't exactly what I want...imho 😀
Ya. I just recently found this station. Lot of great topic. Until I watched. I’m tuning in to see a 4500 built. Not closets and flooring from other projects, you do that in every video. Man. Ya lost me. I’m one guy I get that. But man. Staying in topic is what the viewers are looking for. 6 minutes in before any info on the 4500
Those side projects are done now, so it should pretty focused on the aquarium basement for the foreseeable future :-)

it is essentially an indoor pond with a viewing panel.
