500 Gallon Plywood Aquarium Is Finished! But Was It Worth It?

- The new 500 gallon DIY plywood aquarium is complete! In the video, I finish some exterior work, fix the leak, work on the plumbing and more! I am so excited to finally have this tank ready for fish. Also in today's video, I talk about the cost to build a tank like this, and itemize the full aquarium build in case you're looking to do something similar.
This is my first time building a plywood aquarium, and I'm bound to make small mistakes along the way. If you're looking for a true "how to" video, I'd look up some of the Fishtubers who have more experience with these builds. I'm confident that this tank will all work out fine, but just wanted to throw out that caveat.

That's an incred price for that size of a tank. I'm inspired, thank you!
Good job, live and learn. All part of the journey.
Always!

I might have to do a project for this guy. He’s getting huge! About 34 inches now

Turned out great! Costs are not that bad either!
this is appositely insanly nice looking good job exited for updates!
Well done , it’s a absolute beauty can’t wait to see it finished with all the fish
Thank you!
The end result is stunning! Great job, Troy and thank you for sharing this journey! cheers.
Thanks for watching!
Yes 🎉😂😊
So big and you’re not a pro you’re just a regular guy like us!
The tank & sump look great. You took your time on this project and it shows. Hope this system lasts you for years to come.
great looking tank!
Looks great Troy 👌🏼👌🏼
Hell Ya Troy! I'm super excited also. The blues look great in there with their fabulous scape. I can't wait to see the big boys in there myself. I hope you show some transfers also. I love how your finished out the doors and trim. Looks sleek. It fits the room which is perfect for filming but also there is lots of room left for family living and functions. What show pieces all the tanks are. Congratulations on completing this massive build and enjoy. Love and Peace.
Thank you, really appreciate it!
This here my friend is exactly what you want your build to look like!!... I absolutely hate when I see them make it too big and it ends needing wood in the front for brace... An aquarium should be 100% visible glass/acrylic, clean with NO OBSTRUCTIONS.... Perfect.. great job ❤
Thank you, appreciate that!
Excited with your progress! Watching from Philippines :)
Amazing tank an so cheap. You should be really proud of the work you've done.
Can not wait to see it with the sting Ray and the fish from your 180 gallon.
Plus already looking forward to what you're going to do with the 180.
Tank looks good
Looks good man
The 500 gallon tank is looking pretty good thanks for the update video can’t wait till the next video with the fish in it and the stingray 👍
Great video and awesome tank! One grand cheaper than a new 180 is crazy tho, might have to try building something myself in the future 😅
Hell yeah! The finished product looks absolutely amazing and the skills and confidence you must have after that will be awesome and well deserved!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Great work. You can use foam pads for sound damping. I did that with my 240 gal tank and things got quite.
Nice
Finally finish. The tank looks fabulous. You can pay more than that for a custom tank and a much smaller tank. Great job.
ive wanted to do this for YEARS.. waaay back.. 2002 or so.. it was all over MFK.. its always been something ive wanted to do. congrats man, looks great
Finally its DONE! Great job Troy its looking awesome
Thanks so much!
Stingray is gonna be sweet in there.
Congrats on a job well done couldn't wait for this one looking forward to seeing the stingray 🎉👍👍
Kudos for doing such hard projects to encourage the h9bby. ❤ .
Nothing can beat the sicce syncra💪
👊🏻👊🏻
It looks so clean now with the framing.
🤙🏼🤙🏼
“I’m in debt up to my eyeballs” 🤣🤣🤣 Bro I remember that commercial from like 20 years ago!!! How did you remember that??? And what was that commercial about??? Excellent find!!!
Very well done, Troy. I'm sure this is such a huge accomplishment to get this all done. Everything looks great! I've been following this video series since the beginning!
Thanks man! Really appreciate the support
The "I"m in debt up to my eyeballs" had me cracking up. Tank is sick!
Let’s go!
Since you have a mitre saw already, stick a little quarter round trim in the front of the tank, it'll hide that silicon line! Tank looks awesome!
You can use foam in your stand to reduce noise and you can get pipe insulation for your drain lines both will greatly reduce noise for low cost.
Love your videos bro❤ keep going with your channel
Thank you!
What an accomplishment, super impressive. Rambo approved.
Thank you!
King of DIY would approve
Awsome finished product! I can't wait to see it fully stocked!!
Thanks Melvin!
This would be a great discus tank
After months of patience and your Hardwork the end result is fantastic bro..I must say you and your wife must hit the gym regularly since both of you are in good shape .
Can't wait for the next update regarding the transfer of fishes❤🎉😊😊😊
Thanks as always for following along and for the support ✊🏻✊🏻
@@CichlidBros ur welcome
Show us awesome dude salute to you and your brothers gave me a lot of ideas to play with. 💪🏿💯
Epic build. the only things I would fix is how the lights form three triangular rays with dark spots in between
Hey, I am so happy to see you are done with the big tank 💪. Great job. 😊
Thank you! 😁
love it! nice work!
👍🏻😎Incredible tank!
Thanks! 👍
Awesome tank man!! Looks super good!!! 👍 😊
Fired Up Response to my comment on needing an update, I thought I was lucky enough for reply. I’ve enjoyed watching this build and can’t wait to see the future inhabitants.
Thanks for following along! 👊🏻👊🏻
Beautiful! Get some more surface agitation to add some shimmer to the tank!
The aquarium looks great. The trim really does make a big difference. The tank is so deep I don’t think you’d even notice the bubbles if you have to go the air stone route. I feel a little bad for the juvenile Acara though. I have a feeling they’re going to get downgraded to a smaller tank soon.
Thanks! Plan is to keep the little guys in there with the new ones. They’re likely big enough to be okay
Congrats on banner 18 🎉
That’s awesome bro can’t wait to see it stocked 💯💯💪🏿
You and me both! Thanks for watching!
Looking amazing, waiting to see how lights come out. I think u many need to add more. Let's c how it goes..but so far amazing 😍
Thanks! I actually only have the lights on at about 5% so should be all good
Its a amazing tank. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Fantastic job....
Wow it looks awesome! Congratulations that was a lot of work! Can´t wait to see your cichlids swimming in that huge aquarium, they are going to be very happy! As for the stingray, I´m not sure the sharp rocks are a good idea for them, they might scrape on them
Awesome! Really looks great.
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome job 🤙
Thanks man!
Beautiful plywood aquarium I just subscribed worth the wait
Awesome, thank you!
Awesome job, must definitely trim the excess sealant. And an extra wave maker will give you the water agitation to create ripple effect for your lighting 👍☹️
Here it is!!!!
Congrats... Looks Great.. About to start mine but I am worried about one thing... My own patience! Good job excited to see the fish going in. Kc
Awesome. Best of luck!
Lovely
Your wife is support you.... awesome
🎉Great 👍
Sooo Awesome!!! wow way to keep going on such a huge project. It looks great!! and your super chick is ripped lol I loved watching your journey. It's totally a dream tank man!! I have a 150 that I want to take with me to my new apt. but I'm not sure if the floor can handle the weight...I'm hoping i can get under the floor and reinforce the floor. crossing my fingers. thanks again it was a great journey. thanks for sharing.
Thanks for following along! Really appreciate it!
Nice bro..👍
Your wife is jacked…💪🏼
I was gonna say the same!! Lmao😅
Sangat mempesona
Amazing job, especially for a first time...random question but is your house your forever home? Lol can't even imagine trying to move all your tanks, not even sure if this 500 gal can be moved outta here...incredible job on the build!
Thanks! And yep I plan to be here for many years. Would have to dismantle the tank if I moved
Refugium build up next! Hopefully you don't go bankrupt 😢
What about adding black silicone around the outside of the glass? It would hide the clear silicone from being seen.
i freeking love EBA
Same!
Looks great but the front right silicone is abit rough maybe trim off excess if possible
Troy the tank looks. great. Wish I had the same skill set. Looking at basement windows to see what size glass I can get through 😂 for someone to build one in place as II have the same stair problem. Looking forward to seeing the 180g fish and the stingray in the new tank. Anticipate some additional fish purchases? Im a somewhat unrelated question how time per week do you spend on normal maintenance?
You should of got a GFI outlet instead of a normal one but great tank I love it
Cant you place a 2 way wavemaker on the back support beam? Maybe its a bit high but it would look better than an airstone
Awesome video. What are you going to do about lids on the tank?
Will be making some DIY lids this week before fish move over
this is awesome! just curious, could you have put glass on the sides or would have been too difficult?
Are you going to do a price list on your custom aquarium tank
Now it's a great time to ask you a ? If you had to charge 1 and only 1 person / customer that hired you to build them exactly the same DIY Plywood aquarium what would you charge the new owner? P.S. Looking AWESOME!!!
Very impressive , well done . Great job. Can i ask a question , what are the dimensions ? .
76x44x34 roughly
What steps will you take to prevent mold growth on your basement ceiling, particularly above the aquarium?
Lids and dehumidifier. Nothing different from a normal aquarium
You could have gone with 3/4-in BC plywood and saved a lot there.
😮
I know that was you lol I wasn't sure 😅
Where you buy those hoses that goes to the sump?
Custom Aquariums
What's the place called you got the glass from?
How much is the sump, pump, plumbing
How many hours did it take?
Where did you get a glass that cheap?
Local glass shop
Curious, why don't you like to add an airstone?
Just never liked the look of bubbles in the tank
@CichlidBros yeah, it's not something that really occurs in nature so I can see that. I like the way it looks, I think it benefits the o2 in the water and some of my fish clearly enjoy them. Thx for the reply bro.
Love the look and congratulations on a job well done. I just became a subscriber so I check out the other build videos prior to this. I also have a small channel feel free to check it out Capital City Aquatics
Thanks for the sub!
Your wife is jacked
Hope those acara are staying because trying to get them out of a big tank sucks….
Yeah they’re staying
If you come across this, please send your prayers for my physical and mental healing. Thank you for your support.
For some reason that 500g look really small?
You can do the calculations yourself. I’ve shown dimensions.
It's the black, depth is funky looking to the eye. Just wait until the fish are in it and the lights are set-up and you will see. It's going to look great. Jim you will love it. Plus the camera never does the size any justice. Ask Paul Cuffaro, every visitor he has ever to his fish building has said so. Peace.
Super cool… go cubs😫!
Get a royal pleco
Nice tank, but tbh it's never going to be pretty. Would still like to have one though.
Cool, thanks?
He’s an aquarium guy not a carpenter lol
@@zerohero6602 to be fair, it's hard to make these plywood tanks look attractive and they're more function over form I guess. I certainly wouldn't be allowed one in my lounge, but ok in the basement or garage I suppose.
First lol
