- QuantumScape’s solid-state lithium-metal battery technology is designed to enable greater energy density, faster charging and enhanced safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. However, lithium metal has some unique characteristics that we believe require innovations in cell architecture to address the uniaxial expansion of lithium metal as it plates and strips during charging and discharging. In response, QuantumScape developed a new cell format - FlexFrame - a hybrid of conventional pouch and prismatic cell designs intended to enable a technological step-change improvement through elegant simplicity of design.
In this video, Associate Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan, Venkat Viswanathan, QuantumScape’s Principal Product Lead, Chris Dekmezian, and Senior Director of Cell Design & Manufacturing, Daniel Braithwaite, discuss the innovation behind FlexFrame.

Thanks Quantumscape for providing an update. 1. Perfection is the enemy of progress. Deliver, Deliver, Deliver... Iterate along the way and this will shutdown the trolls and naysayers. 2. Focus on low quantity high prices markets to drive your capital investments and free cashflow. ( Energy and Shipping) 3. I look fwd to your first released product. Keep driving fwd .
Great video.... well done to Quantumscape!
Looks like they are getting closer to the end goal of mass production!
Mass production of stocks to sell to suckers, yes!
@@Mark_BatteryPhD I think they are doing their best to deliver a new product.
@@Mark_BatteryPhD what are you day trader short seller?
Yes - the new CEO is a manufacturing specialist in high tech products such as chips and memory storage. These are serious people.
You did it buddies. Just Great. Your efforts should pay for the adoption of ev transportation. Thank you😃😃😃
I am looking forward to the day when I can install some of those sexy QS batteries in my home solar power system. Keep up the good work, and hurry up! :)
Venkat..Any final thoughts? Yes, when do my stock options mature.
This is great! Thanks Team!
I agree - this is great comedy!
What about resistance to low temperature ?
The fact that this video looks so unpolished only convinces me more that they're putting every dollar possible into R&D. Right on.
Exciting update!
Thx. for the presentation. I would have like to know the following.
* The Gravimetric energy density
* The Volumetric energy density
* The Charge/ Discharge speeds
* The expected ETA of these commercially
A better question is: even with a 20% improvement of energy density who cares? Do you know any EV OEMs really that are willing pay a premium for a slightly higher energy density? (I'll give you the dirty secret: none). EV OEMs care about 2 things right now: reducing cost and derisking supply chains. This does the opposite.
@@Mark_BatteryPhD there is too many battery techs. coming up. Not sure who will come to production. The last I heard was Zinc Ion batteries.
PS: i have booked a Solar Electric Car called Aptera - I expect 600 miles range - 40 miles. per day just from solar / carbon fibre body - hub motors - drag coefficient of 0.13. I hope that should give you some food for thought.
if they dont give a number in presentation that means numbers are not good
Awesome update!
P.S.: I can't seem to activate notifications for some reason :/ Maybe the channel is marked as family-friendly?
Can you please add a link to a photo (or release a new short video) in which the difference in thickness of the old and new 24 layer cells are clearly visible?
This is important. Yes we would like to see the effectiveness of this new mechanical cell.
What is the QS-0 production line? What is its status?
Good information and interesting product. I´m very concern if the company will start selling this year. Sometimes you have to soar before you can walk.
i want this inside my smartphone
Not sure, why they don't start there like I thought they were
I’m a big fan and supporter of QS and want you to succeed! One question that I have with this flex frame is this: How can you apply a uniform pressure to the cell especially once stacked? All your testing is always done with 2-4 atm of pressure which seems easy to apply on a single frame but not on a stack!?
Also, why not start manufacturing smaller, single frame batteries aka for Cellphones, Watches and other everyday electronics, wouldn’t that validate the SSB and wouldn’t you receive great end-user data etc. and as a side effect you would be bringing in revenue which would “appease” Wall Street which in turn boosts your share price which in turn benefits yourself (QS) and the shareholders? Thanks.
If they are stacked and the heat is dissipated out the back, how can you stack them? Is side dissipation enough?
Back dissipation occurs by stalking the edges leaving a space on the bottom side.
Will the flex part not break apart after tons of charge-discharge cycles? And is there an strong evidence that it is safer than lithium ion battery? And was mass production considered in the package design?
Rhey discuss how mass production was a key factor in choosing the design. The materials are time tested and easily sourced. There is strong evidence regarding the increased potential safety of SS - you'd have to google that.
Great video, thanks. One question....Does the flex part suffer fatigue over time that would cause cracking or breaking? How many flex cycles can it take?
My 1st thought as well. It’s great that it lasts so long as far as battery degradation but how would the casing be able to stand flexing over that time?
@@normanwolfe7639 I think he said it was a "composite" so it's likely it is robust and carefully designed to have a long operating life.
There was a recent test done by VW which confirmed 1000 cycles, QS are claiming that this was done with the new Frame cell. But a seperate metal fatigue/duty cycle analysis of that cell-frame is needed.
. @Hybridog Maybe they've done the fatigue testing but it would be nice to know the results
Ich hoffe, dass sie tatsächlich umweltfreundlich sind.
Would be interesting to hear what Vee Dub has to say.
why are you not considering it for IT products. I wanna upgrade my iphone and airpods with better battery.
Will the case be electrically isolated from the terminal tabs?
That has to be true otherwise the entire cell shorts out and just melts.
Strange how shorting isn't an issue with other cells, where the case is connected to the negative terminal. I'm curious if QS is thinking further ahead to the pack-level where case isolation from both terminals can be useful.
What does VW say about this product that they have been working on, and how does this compare to Toyota SSb
VW has published their view on the third party test results, and are very impressed.
Ever considered a double sided cathode design?
There is literally said there are still generations of samples to come before it is commercially available
No. The stated plan is to produce an initial battery that is well within engineering tolerances, and then explore higher energy densities etc. as data is gleaned and analyzed.
Thanks for exciting news. Is FlexFrame battery currently available for sale?
Sorry, this company only sells stocks.
I'm just curious, how much do some have in it? I don't have much, but like anything, one can't win if they don't play
Wonder if the new 2025 Porsche Taycan is using Quantumscape solid state batteries? Check out the Out of Spec charge review of 2025 Taycan. Cover if your short.
Most likely 2026. In 2024 the QS batteries will be in pilot test cars.
Why not slow the charging? People don't care about slow chaeging if the range us big.
Lets see some actually numbers in process or put it to work here so we can see something Tangible
I wonder if Elon’s thoughts on solid state batteries have changed or will they ever?
If this thoughts change and partner with quantumscape, tesla stock will lose about $300B market cap. Do you know how much hype and expectations there are on Tesla's energy business?
Why do people keep talking that RVs have an exceleration problem? Many of the large sedans are faster 0 to 60 than a formula-1 car. They need to be lighter, better range and faster charging. The exceleration could easily be less.
The only time we get videos any more seems to be when the price is actively dropping. My desperation is one with Quantumscape. I really hope you bring something a little more interesting than an empty shell to the quarterly
Agreed. They don’t care about retail investor. They should post this video after VW announcement.
Your answers were quite vague when it came to the timeline when this will be in production. We are bleeding every day to the point we will no longer be able to see the full production of the battery. Please tell Jagdeep to give us an update of the production schedule.
Just be patient Hindi. God didn’t build the world in a day. It takes time to revolutionize the world like they are in process of doing. Just enjoy the positive trickle of releases..
Here is your update. Quantumscape has been a pump and dump stock from the start.
Can't schedule something that has never been done
I’ve been holding 2 years. It will pay off but agree we need regular comms on scale and prod release
TBH their goal performance isnt that great and by the time they are mass producing, conventional lithium ion cells should be on par with them
So can quantumscape produce cheaper then current cells. If they cant then it might be for niche applications only.
Can you tell us which lithium ion cells are going to be on par?
Thought you were going to be mass producing in 2024? Now you are showing us a mock up of an empty battery case I could have made on my 3d printer overnight.
😣 Promo*SM
Quantumscape - the Theranos of the battery industry! Bravo!
I disagree with that.
Sounds like you've lost a lot of money on this bet. Apologies for your loss @@Greenpower68. I admire the diamond hands though!
Who hurt you?
Not sure what u mean
@@Greenpower68 question was for mark_batteryphd
Yawn. We are still at least a decade away from solid state being at a decent price for use in cars.
This is not hekping the FUTURES, still this thing is going down the tube!
Why
This marketing will not work any more please give real info .not hopes
i thought it was anode free? 🙄
I too have the same thought! In fact they removed or blocked my comments on their senseless thoughts! they always escape with their forward looking statements!!!!
Anode free batteries doesn't mean it doesn't have an anode. It just means that the lithium was plated onto the current collector forming an anode. It's a weird name.
that is where youre wrong. it was explicitly mentioned that there will be cost savings due to having no anode material. if you listened to the earning calls, the flex frame was introduced over a year ago, which at the same time it was mentioned that the battery would be anode free. kinda funny VW chooses to go with someone elses tech, and now they wanna finally reveal some old news packaging? its been over a decade, wheres the damn battery? even the 5mAh would be a breakthru, but the one they showed is same size as my ohone battery currently. the battery was supposed to be 3cm square. again, there was lots of things theyve said which just simply isnt true.
Dude, anode free means no host materials like carbon or graphite etc. Lithium is deposited directly on copper current collector. Just chill.
Penny Stock
Don't buy any Stock
They Show us Just Batterie box😂
And the fraud goes on...
Exactly! What's VW doing with their solid 500 million dollar solid investment into QS?!
Solid state batteries are useless if there is no infrastructure to charge them. No scale viability for current BEVs
That is absurd as they can be charged anywhere fine charging is available. Yes, there is no EV scale becasue no-one makes an EV SS battery - that's kind of the point here.
Are they sitting in a greenscreen room with fake background? If so, couldn't you choose *anything* less boring.
It's not a netflix show.
