Here’s why the Astros GAVE UP Drew Gilbert in a TRADE! | ESPN Houston

  • The Astros traded their top prospect, Drew Gilbert, along with Ryan Clifford to the Mets for Justin Verlander. How much of their willingness to part with Gilbert is related to Chas McCormick's hot hitting? How much of it is that the Astros don't see Gilbert as a future star??

    As a Mets fan I wish Justin all the luck in the world. Loved him here even if it was for a few months. I LOVE what the Mets did here. Cohen considered all the money spent anyway so to be able to recognize that the giant payroll failed and immediately pivoted to stocking up farm talent. I think Clifford ultimately ends up the better mlb players in this. Good luck Astros!

  • @aiyah44
    @aiyah44 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Clifford is the prize of that trade. I don't know why everyone on Twitter was losing their mind when we traded Gilbert. Melton, Baez and Barber is where it's at... those 3 have a much higher ceiling. Gilberts is more polished yes because he played in the SEC but his ceiling is low at the MLB level in my option. I think his ceiling might be Benintendi, solid player but not a star.
    This also gives you the money to maybe extend Tucker, whether be a long extension or a short one. Hear me out on the short extension. I've said this before, this actually works the best for both sides. It's actually advantages for Tucker as well. Hes currently 26 and hits free agency in 2 years at the age of 28. Buyout the last 2 years of arbitration + 3 year extension. Say we offer this, last 2 years of arbitration we give him 20 mil each, then 35 each the next 3. Thats 20 + 20 + 35 + 35 +35 = 145m. He then hits free agency at the age of 31 to sign his 9 or 10 year deal. Maybe he gets a 10 year 380 deal. Thats well over 500 mil total for him. Hitting free agency at the age of 30 or 31 is the sweet spot. By then the CBT is going to be much higher so his AAV will be much higher as well vs becoming a free agent after arbitration at the age of 28.
    If he signs a long term deal at age 28 (current free agent year) say 10-12 years for 350, or even 400. Hes leaving close to 100 m on the table. Also by year 4 of this deal, hes gonna be at a major discount when the CBT goes up. Hitting free agency at age 28 and signing a long term deal is not the best way to go if hes looking to maximize his money.
    This is what we did with Bregman. Bought out last year 3 years of his arbitration and extended him for 2 more. Now Bregman will hit free agency at age 31 to sign his long term deal, which is also why I think Bregman will leave.
    I think this route could have worked this past offseason before he hit arbitration but we didn't have a gm. I totally wouldn't be surprised if we offered to buyout Tucker's last 2 years of arbitration and then offer a 2 or 3 year extension at a high AAV. Make him a 150m player before he even hits free agency to sign his long term deal. It's the best for both sides.

    Chas came on in the last half of last year and we were tickled that he was good and he stepped it up in the playoffs. Chas has shown us that (up to this point) he is developing into an all-star outfielder. He has speed, pop in the bat, great defense, baseball smarts, and works well with Tuck, Yordan, Julks and Meyers on fly balls.
