Never noticed it before, but that first 360 degree swivel really makes you wonder: where's the film crew? how did they keep the beach so pristine?
"Well this beach isn't so bad. The last one I was on had blood, guts and bullets everywhere."
Nah, this was before, hence the 'shellshock' at Omaha
Mexico?
You talking about Saving Ryan’s Privates?
If you think this is a fantastic story, please allow me to relate to you a real one. In 1704, a Scottish sailor named Alexander Selkirk, sailing on an English privateer, had a disagreement with his captain and told the captain that he didn't think the ship was seaworthy and asked to be put ashore on an island where they'd stopped off the coast of South America. The captain put him in a boat with two sailors who rowed him ashore with just a few supplies. He lived alone on the island for over four years before an English ship happened to stop at the island for wood and fresh water and found him. On the island were lots of goats and other animals, and a lot of plants, perhaps from ship wreaks in past years, so he had food to eat, although he had to chase it down. As a result of all the exercise he got from chasing the animals for food and climbing around the island, he was in remarkedly good shape when he was found. It's an interesting story and there's a book about his adventures. After he'd been back in England for a short period, he longed to be back on his island again but never made it back.
It’s England, of course he longed to be back. Between that god forsaken island and the island he lived on for four years, who wouldn’t?!
@@LigierthegreensunWhat’s so bad about England?
@@williamrisbridger60 it’s a joke, just giving it back to people who give a lot of grief to America in my experience.

He was a really smart guy. Learned about his story in detail. He used the goats for than just food, btw.
What an incredible story, movie and performance by one of the absolute best of the top-shelf actors in Tom Hanks.

Hanks was incredible in this. One of the greatest films ever.
He is an amazing actor!
Whenever I watch the beach portion of this movie, I feel a tremendous sense of peace. Maybe it's because there isn't loud noises, endless rapid cuts, people talking rapidly.
Take a break from social media.
Whatever you described is not what I find a lot of in contemporary movies, or in real life interactions.
Completely! It’s one of the things I really notice in modern films, whatever the genre; the cut speed is so quick nowadays. I genuinely believe this to be super damaging to children.
I'm 7 months late to this comment but I was just thinking about this about 30 seconds into the video. All too true.
@@steverogers7601leave it to the armchair therapist to tell a stranger on the Internet what to do with only the slightest amount of context provided
One of the things they don’t show about island beaches is the flies.
Sandflies
Ew! 😝
In all seriousness he got lucky with that island.
Fish, coconuts, fresh water source, etc.
And a best friend: Wilson 😂
Yes, BUT he had to learn spearfishing and the fresh water source was only if it rained and he concocted some way of storing the rainwater
@@jennifersman7990 His life raft would have been perfect to collect the rain water and the coconut shells for storing it. He could have also used the big leafs of plants.
I always thought he was unlucky. I mean, imagine spending 4 years in a place where no one can help you.
@@jennifersman7990he got lucky it rained so soon, you can’t last much longer than 72 hours without it.
What I admired about this movie was just how practical and methodical Tom Hanks' character was.
First things first.
What's important now?
Yes shelter and food and schemes to get out.
First important thing was the watch...Kelly time!
There are 5 C’s and 5 W’s to survival and Hanks on the first 2-3 days missed them all. As prepared as he was made out to be in this film, he was not ready for this challenge.
It was all that astronaut training.
This movie is all about movement sounds. I love it
I'd love it if in the last scene when he delivers her the package she says "At last, my satellite phone has arrived."
I'm pretty sure she shipped that box, based on the markings that were on her truck.
@@raterusYessir! Also, Hanks explained the ending in an interview years ago. He does in fact go back to her. We see the sign at her ranch twice in the movie. When she’s going to send the package. And when Hanks brings it back. The first time we see the sign it indicates she is married. When hanks brings the package at the end her husbands name is taken from off it. Intended to inform the audience she too is now single. So we were supposed to infer the two were brought together because of this tragedy. And obviously, the wings were symbolic in that she was his guardian angel even as much so as his girlfriend (Helen Hunt).
That was a Superbowl ad
Truly one of Tom Hanks very best films
With all due respect to Russell Crowe, Hanks should’ve won the Oscar for this
Was that when Crowe won for Gladiator? That was action, versus cerebral. It'll always be a lopsided win then unfortunately.
That would’ve made it three. The hat trick. 🏒
He did win the Golden Globe over Crowe…
Hanks barely had any lines. Great movie but nowhere near Oscar worthy lol
@@fleatactical7390I thought Crowe won for A Beautiful Mind
My favorite is when the coconuts fall and he’s like “hey!?” 🌴
I called it the "coconut monster". Because he was terrified of the sounds the coconuts made when they dropped.
It's difficult watching this clip knowing that he is probably just thinking to himself the same thing anyone would think: "This is kind of beautiful. I wonder how long until a helicopter comes and gets me? I'm just going to enjoy this sunset". Knowing that eventually (spoiler alert) no rescue ever comes makes it hauntingly beautiful in a way.
That’s not what I would be thinking..would immediately think that I’m stranded.
He was looking at the waves already thinking about how to get off the island. But I don't think he raises how long it would take
For me, it would be beautiful until these dental problems. And the spell breaks!
@@JaguarPriest You would build a hat, open a fire , start hunting, fishing ,create a big SOS, make a raft ,a big pile of wood to lit to worn ships and then some tourists will pass by from the near beach

"And I headed towards freedom, not realizing that I was moving away from it."
I remember seeing this in theaters with my family during the holiday season I believe, it was an experience for sure. I loved this film.

I'm 31 years old & have never seen a single scene from this movie until now. Haven't avoided watching it, just never in the mood to check it out or if it's on TV I've already missed so much, so I don't bother. However, I do know, "WILSOOOOOON!" This movie is probably my "jaw dropper never seen before" flick.
The most unforgiving beast in our world. The ocean.
Lost my older brother in the Ocean, sailboat ⛵️!
The ocean should not be messed with.
ever been in a forest fire? if you know how to swim....you can survive in the ocean. a forest fire is like being chased through hell by a thousand T-rex!!
@@montanaelkwhisperer1744 ah yes, I forgot that we as humans are capable (on average) of swimming across the ocean. Whereas a forest fire is somewhat avoidable even escapable. But being stuck on an island hundreds even thousands of miles in the middle of the ocean? You’re fucked. Rip tide? Screwed. Predatory animals in the water? Screwed. And all you have to use is your arms and legs which will eventually, if not quickly, give out and you will grown. I agree with you that Fire and Water are the 2 worst things in our world to deal with, but the ocean… that’s a beast no man has it will conquer. Fire is manageable.
This movie also has a great reason why you never put off that dentist appointment!
It takes a lot of dedication to play a role like this. Just the mere fact that you have to live on an island shows what actors, like Tom Hanks, are willing to do. Most wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Add to that, production paused so Hanks could drop weight and truly look like someone who has been living for years in a deserted island eating fish and coconuts.
I think movie group had all modern amenities there. Nice fresh water and beverages, hot food, shower, comfortable toilets, helicopters and boats, hairdressers, satellite phones and even dentist. It is not like he was in some Survivor show and he had to eat insects and was in danger to be voted out island once a week ;)
Reminds of Gary Sinise, who accepted to lose both legs so he could play Lt. Dan.
Like when David Batista actually embarked on intergalactic space travel and became green and shirtless.
Such dedication to the craft!
As an Alaskan introvert, waking up on an uninhabited tropical island is a dream case scenario.

@jockejocke1 Jesus dude. Ive gone long stints being single, id consider myself an introvert but having someone you love n loves you is immensely better. No one should go their whole lives single. My advice is just talk to em, compliments go a long way with em, be honest.
@@JarrodButaliUnfortunately, if you’re a straight guy in America, being single you’re entire life is the *only* right decision. And it’s a million times worse if you have a child with one of them.
This. The only winning move is not to play.
If anything, this shows the dedication of FedEx employees to their jobs.

Tom Hanks at his best.
First couple of minutes of this is how I spend most hangovers - how am I alive? why am I so hot? oh yeh I slept in my clothes again, why am I wet, oh I pissed myself again, why can’t I walk? I read Mysterious Island when I was 6 y.o. Still remember it vividly.
First things in deserted island is fresh water, food, shelter and fire. Mysterious Island men had river right there on beach, they had group of big rocks for shelter they called Chimneys, they collected bird eggs for food, but they did not have fire. Until engineer Cyrus Smith made fire using two glasses from their watches .Having filled them with water and rendered their edges adhesive by means of a little clay, he thus fabricated a regular burning-glass,

Step 1. Secure your raft. It's not only a means of travel, but shelter, water collection, and hauling stuff.
I know it was ultimately a nightmare, but part of being on a tropical paradise all alone with piece and quiet is really really appealing
You say that now, but wait until you have no human contact for four straight years and have to not only find food and shelter, but adequate drinking water and a way to maintain some form of hygiene without plumbing, toiletries, or even a mirror.
Would be alright for a few weeks
that's assuming you have access to good food and sanitation and shelter. Without any of those, it'd indeed be a nightmare anywhere on earth.
@@sneezyg1the only differences between that and India is people in India have human contact and mirrors. I guess some food as well.

This is a story much greater things happened in real life.
Twist ending: in reality the guy was actually dr house, having been stranded on the island on his return flight escorting wilsons body back home after he died of cancer. The volleyball is actually wilsons preserved, severed head, which floated ashore after the crash, that house talks to in order to keep himself sane
His mistake was waiting , if something like that happens to me I don’t waste time in building shelter and a huge raft that can take big waves . Someone will see him eventually instead of going nuts in sn island

@@halberderdier8073 My mistake it was penicillin that was produced from bread or citrus mold. (I deleted the previous comment) I have no idea how to make insulin treatment. But apparently it would be a complicated process to extract from animal pancreas. It seems you are correct about being doomed, unless there is a means to get it by eating the pancreas of an available animal, but I have large doubts that it would work that way. Especially given that insulin treatment usually requires injection and not digestion.
Let me preface this by saying that I thought this was a great movie, but are there really any deserted islands left in the South Pacific anymore? It seems like all of the ones of any significant size have a resort on them.
Apparently there are many, some with fed ex boxes still there
Actually as amazing as it sounds there are uninhabited islands in most of the Pacific island groups so yeah there are quite a few
Henderson Island is probably the most like this fictional 1 as it has a lot of vegetation and is somewhat large. Others like Ducie and Oeno are coral atolls and have very little plant life.
Henderson is the only 1 of the 3 that has any fresh water and that very limited as its from from a spring that is only exposed at low tide. Getting to any of these is difficult. You can saild there or fly to Papeete change planes to Mangareve then take the supply ship to Pitcairn then convince 1 of the locals to take you by open boat ( about 200km)
Well isn't that the point? Of a deserted island? Thats why nobody can find it or know where it is. Cuz it's uninhabitable and desert. This island is actually really teeny tiny. Lol 😂
I think so, there’ve been stories of Japanese soldiers found on tiny islands in the Philippines who had no idea WW2 ever ended

Incredible to think that today, with a personal locator beacon he would have been found within 24 hours.
Today, most of the scenarios in Seinfeld would be solved in less than 1 minute
There should be one on that raft he floated in on.
Your first day in Minecraft
no island in the world is without ppl , , someone has claimed it , but a good movie , 10/10
That particular island is extremely remote in the very southern Pacific. That's why no one bothers.
Today, with a waterproof smartphone with GPS, the movie would be over in a minute
They actually had sat phones back then too. I'm assuming that's what you mean since a regular smartphone would be basically useless in this situation.
Not if you lose it during your escape on the raft. That's where he lost the EPIRB locator beacon (the red thing that was caught on the wreckage), which would've allowed them to find and rescue him the same way back then
Great film but I just don’t believe that 4 years would go by without someone coming to the island or a ship passing by.

I find it hard to believe that they wouldn't have found him. A massive jet goes down, he drifts for a few hours and lands on an island. He didn't drift long. I would like to know if there really are those Robinson islands anymore? Very unlikely in our overcrowded, overpopulated world, I guess.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a couple still left undiscovered.
One would think it'll all be resorts or private islands, however there are apparently still a few in the Pacific that are too remote to build on and supply economically.
