His expression, at the time of looking back at the island, is awesome.
😀
We are not aware of what we have until we lose it.
That moment is also the first time in the film, an hour and 43 minutes in, that we hear any instrumental music
@@disgruntledcashier503 I noticed this too. That’s what makes it such a powerful moment in the film.
Truly one of Tom Hanks best films, Hard to believe he DID’NT win the Oscar for this one
Yes.. I just watched a video interview with Hanks where he talked about how it took FIVE YEARS to make the movie. First gaining weight and then obviously maintaining the dedication to LOSE a incredible amount 👏
@@christopherfritz3840Yes Incredible Actor! He Did The Same With His Weight In "Philadelphia"
there are so many oscar-worthy performances every year, but there can be only one winner. Tom Hanks had strong competition that year, he was nominated for the Oscar, but the award went to Russell Crowe in 'Gladiator'.
A very underappreciated film only him innit really and absolutely epic ,with bravery shown beyond belief if anyone ever actually did this .
@@TheColinChapmanwow yeah if your going to lose out to that beaut ,nothing else to say .
When he looks back at the island with a bittersweet expression. It saved him, but it was also killing him. To decide to risk it and get off the safety of the island after it served him for all those years...sometimes I find myself looking back at my own island as I get back into that rough water on my journey of growth and I have the same look in my eyes.
That's exactly the semantic meaning I was trying to find in the words, you couldn't have said it better.
Its like leaving your first A-hole job but looking back you learn some valuable life experience😅
@@frozentesla7771 no, i dont think that leaving a deserted island you've been stranded on for over 4 years accepting incredibly high chances of dying is anything remotely similar to leaving a job that sucks. that is like comparing a small fire cracker to a nuke. i get the visual symbolism of this scene but still.
@schneevongestern9898 no one can try to relate on the internet anymore can they?
The island provided everything he needed to survive
I like how that whale just looks at tom Hanks thinking " what's going on man, what are you doing out here in the middle of the ocean?
When I first watched it, I didn’t know it was a whale since it was pretty dark.
The whale watched him the whole time I think, looking after him. They are smarter than we think.
@@creneemugo94they def are smarter then most people think same with sharks
Right?!
My thoughts exactly
such a metaphor. sometimes we have to take huge risks into the unknown. leave our island of familiarity and set sail in order to grow
This movie is full of metaphors
This is my favorite movie ever. The island represents a prison. A place we are stuck in and sure to die in if we stay there. For me it has been a bad marriage. A bad job. An addiction. And getting off of it has been the most difficult thing ever. I could have died in the process but instead I took a leap of faith and it worked out. The wings took me to a better place, even if it wasnt the place where I wanted to land in when I first started my recovery journey. I just kept going forward with the Faith that God had a better plan for me. Even if it wasnt my exact plan. Such a great movie.
@@Joed757that made me cry man especially being in recovery myself and finally getting a career and met someone I love and loves me. I’m not where I thought I was going to be but I’m so glad I’m here
amen to that, i am doing it now.
Not just to grow, but to live
So kelly has a baby that is 3 years old...he was on the island for 4 years which means 3 months after he crashed on the island she got knocked up by the dentist.
So much for mourning.
5 months but who's counting :P
Who said the baby is 3? The kid they show looks 18 months old at most.
Regardless, she moved on really quick.
@@achterberghardwoodfloors1520that's womens' specialty
Probably was already having an affair and the presumed death was just the needed excuse from there on.
One of the best things about this movie is the lack of music. When Chuck is on the island, there is no music (to intensify the feeling of isolation) until this scene. One of the most beautiful scores isn't heard until the last 1/4 of a movie, and it elevates this film. It is the score when Wilson drifts away, and when Kelly is brought back home. Incredibly bittersweet
When he looks back at the island, is the first time in the movie that there is any music...brilliant and powerful!
Now that I have grown, watching this brave man crest that wave and stare at the island that was his home for many days. After all these years, I understand.
CRIMINAL that he didn't win his 3rd Oscar for this brilliant performance
That's not what the word criminal means.
@@strategicsage7694 It's a word of saying. And yes he did deserve an Oscar for this movie.
@@Vikingr91 It's a word with a specific meaning, one that is misused here.
@@strategicsage7694 Not really. It's like saying that something is criminally underrated. It's slang.
100%
Leaving Esptein Island is always difficult
We did it Wilson ❤ the most beautiful line in entire movie ❤
The part that he was looking for the last time at the island always gets to me. It reminds me of my brother’s passing 20 years ago, him leaving this World but I know I will see him again…
My condolences. May we all see our loved ones again someday.
TMI
You won’t.
@@indigohammer5732 what's the need?
You bet you will get to see your brother again! I had a similar experience losing my Lady! Thanks for sharing. God Bless you 🙏🙌
This IS what a beach launch is like. Its so daunting. Once the wave passes and you see how low the water around you is, you can't believe that you haven't appeared to move an inch. And there is always that final wave that makes you question your launch. But once you pass it, it's over. It's easier to be a mile out at sea than it is to be 100 yards from shore.
As a boater, he's a bit insane going out with just two oars, even given his limits. You always want multiple means of locomotion. He has two: oars and sail. He really wants 3 - i.e. another back up. That said, having two methods of propelling himself is great given his situation.
The only other thing I question is the size of his boat: perhaps a bit wider and longer... but then he has to row the thing.
A fun side note: when the whale appears its easier to see a connection between this movie and Forest Gump. It's a Forest Gump jogging moment.
Well it isn't like he was going to gin up an outboard motor from coconuts. The only thing that might give him a third is to have some sort of pedal locomotion but I can't conceive of how he could make that. Oars were sufficient providing he was more energetic at them and got more force from them. My grandma could row harder than him
@@jamesbutler8821 another set of oars, my friend. Another set of oars.
@@BrooklynAvenueRowed by who? Or do you mean as a backup?
He could´ve avoided all of that if he just waited till the sea was calm lol
@@91137732 exactly. there wouldn't be swell all of the time. windows of calmer conditions would open up.
This the film, which teaches you never give up in life and though situation
The eye of the whale gets me every time...
Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket (when going to look for Geppetto) always mention Monstro the whale every time scared all sea creatures.
Wilson shouldve gotten an oscar.
This is the feeling when you leave your comfort zone. Looking back to the island without knowing what the future prepares for him.
Just more pain after he finds out Kelly deserted (and cheated) him
‘The tide came in and brought me a sail, who knows what the tide could bring tomorrow’
Paraphrased but always loved this quote.
This movie is awesome
CAST AWAY 2 will show him rowing back to the island in 2023
Can't say I'd blame him.
I wonder if he couldn't put a legal claim on the island since he was there for a long time?
*WILSON IM BACK*
Wilson is non Binary
This part and the ending where he talks to the lady that sent the package are my favorite scenes on the movie. I live the boyish demeanor he has from being on his own for so long too. It was like a rebirth and maybe he'll be less of a jerk and give his new girlfriend more of his time instead of his job.
Let go of people when casted away, let go of appearances, then one day let go of island his only home for many years, then let go of his only friend Wilson during the time he was on island, then let go of his woman he wanted to see again when he is on land! Then finally at cross roads, he decides to let go the feeling of loss !! An amazing journey that almost all of us go through
Interesting how quickly he regained his sanity after being stranded 4 so long
I never thought he lost his sanity. Talking to an inanimate object would actually be the healthy thing to do.
He'd be dead in reality (killed alongside all passengers on board).
@@Frankie-O then there wouldn't be a movie
@@purpurina5663 Realistically you would go batshit crazy by year 2 atleast, not matter what.
I love the theme music for this movie.
I cried when he lost Wilson
A masterpiece 🎉
Im pretty sure when I watched this movie for the 1st time it gave me my base anxieties lol.
😟
Excellent movie and direction
Not often mentioned but the whale staying with him until he is rescued likely kept any sharks in the area away from him.
3:08 the island saying: if you want to leave, then leave; we've got storms and waves, just like everywhere else, but I'm not going anywhere.
When he looked back at the island, he was somewhat sad. He was happy his sail worked and happy to be hopefully sailing back to society. But that island was his home for 4 years. A part of him will always miss the island.
На самом деле это тяжело преодолеть.. это как прыжок во времени. Дас...
He lasted 1500 days!
I wouldn't have lasted a week!
NOT EVEN 1 YEAR.
No tiktok for a week
Wilson had one job: hang on. He couldn't even do that correctly. Some friend...
Agreed. Good thing they got it on tape when the tape gave in.
Fun fact: Sales of Wilson volleyballs improved marginally for a bit after this film was released.
The “bloody palmprint” model was popular with children and marooned sailors. 🏐
Had to scan ahead to make sure this video doesn't have the clip where he loses Wilson
The Whale Is Like.. " What The Fucccccccccc Are You Doing Here "?
Tom should have revisited the iland and looked for Willson!
What a crying shame Gladiator and Cast Away were both in the same year
This movie and performance is phenomenal, as was Russell Crowe's in Gladiator
Both so oscar worthy
The island was home it gave him every thing he needed to live day to day . He just wanted more an had to take a risk at losing it all .
عود.الي.الديار.😊❤...
Man seeing that whale and hearing those sounds in the pitch black ocean I be terrified
Great scene but personally I would have launched from the other side of the island.
Whale: Yo, what's up??
moving places??
Shouldn't he have said to Wilson- hold on .....I'll do all the rowing. He wasn't paddling which implies a different body position.
i'm glad that whale didn't harm his raft, i was scared the first time i watched it
I love survival movies . Now days they make satellite phones and satellite text messagers. If you want one make sure it’s off the iridium net work . The garmin inreach series is perfect
That whale scares the hell out of me.
The thought of a massive creature just being under you and you don't know it's there.
Or you turn around and just see an eye staring at you from the water...
Whale had his back though
2:34😢
💔😓
Seeing a whale up close that exposed in the water would frighten me to death. I would never be able to stay calm if a whale was that close to me I’m terrified of sharks, but whales frightened me even more because of their size. I know they don’t harm you, but they just frighten me to death because of their size.
If only he could have done this 3 years before…..
4 years before.
5 years before
Kelly is an antagonist in this movie.
Ain’t no way I could on the ocean at night would’ve died on the island

It's like he made a boat and set sail but 22 years later he bought a boat and set sail in Pinnochio to search for him Tom Hanks 2 different roles
How long years did he spend there
1500 days
Not a sailor but why not paddle out when seas are calm and waves low?
Or is it that the break there always has big waves?
In the movie he tries this before, but finds himself unprepared and nearly dies.
It always has the waves 🌊
Water current due to Coreolis effect, water in the sea and ocean is moving.
There are always waves in the middle of the ocean
I think the big wave is where the shelf of rising land is around the island.
3:13 but why did the island fade away like that?
Looks like it was getting hit by a rainstorm
@@deputyrock3489 so that was rain?
I thought it faded because he was leaving the island
Titanic saw nothing but ocean until the iceberg.
@@Frankie-O what does titanic have to do with an island?

And i noticed chuck went from slight pudgy to bone thin in this classic film
I don't care what people said about Tom Hanks good actor Saving Private Ryan, women baseball, grow up, the one that he's in a Mafia the guy kills his wife and youngest son his oldest son works but stills the other one with the big brown dog and more
2:28
Plenty of fish in the sea
Whale is like sheesh man, that sucks
Yea if he ever took the time to learn to surf he never would've tried to leave
I wonder how long he would have survived had he stayed on the island. Eventually, with all of the constant sun exposure and lack of medical care, he probably would have died of cancer.
Do you realize 99% of people dont have attachment with other human compar to Hanks and Wilson....
Vorstellung von Nerven Midetion

Imagine if the currents ended up just taking him to another, different, deserted island. Only this time, the conditions are worse, with animal predators living on it.
I remember seeing him do an interview, obviously, LONG before the movie's release with his scraggly hair and beard and thinking WTF?! 😮
When xrp finally wins lol
If the whale ate him, how long could he live inside the whale?
What’s so haunting is besides the blowhole, the whale didn’t even make a sound
No way that little piece of plastic siding would push him over that huge wave

@3:04 .. Wilson.... Rastafari !
Ya, like he’s not going to get attacked by sharks in the middle of the ocean? Give me a break!!
Great scene, love the whale bit. Maybe this is ignorant of me, but I feel like with 100% time devotion, over the course of years you could build yourself a really fly ship. Not a dozen logs tied together. But like did he never think to build a band saw? No but seriously you could build yourself a reasonable vessel with years of focused labour
He didn’t have years. He only had that short time period when the tides and wind was right that year and he was motivated THEN
He had nothing to use as a sail so didn't bother.
Yes, that is ignorant of you.
Makes you wonder why he picked a bad day with high waves and dark water to launch his escape raft. Makes no sense.
The launch day was dictated by the shift in the wind...offshore.
couldn't epstein just fly him out ?
That whale looked at him and thought “I’ll bet that guy is on the Epstein client list”
I wonder if that island reminded Tom hanks of Epstein island since Tom hanks visited Epstein island many times.
He didn't need Wilson. All he needed was Jesus.
Perhaps Jesus sent Wilson to give him hope and companionship in a difficult situation.
Well at least Wilson exists and isnt fictionally murdering people in temper tantrums.
Why did Jesus allow him to get stuck on some island to begin with?
At first, he didn't. But then, he did it! 🌊
