Id love to see a really good reason to not just hunt other players. Extract shooter always devolve from being about looting the environment to just camping the extraction zones.

Yeah, all I could think about the story of being attacked by another player whilst extracting and then downing them is they probably went over to their desk afterwards to rip on them for failing.

The original Marathon game was not one where you jumped around like crazy and there was health and ammo littered everywhere on the floor. The health and save panels were rare and you did everything to find them. It was INTENSE. It was dark sometimes, there were puzzles, you had to be careful when you moved around. I sincerely hope they retain this feeling.
You could jump around like crazy if you were a real vid master.
It'll be an extraction shooter, every item is sparce. Plus the video co firmed there will be dark and intense areas.

Literally so hesitant to get excited about this after how hyped I got for Destiny being an "open world." I'll never forget landing on the moon for the first time and then immediately stepping "out of bounds"

@@judjudersawn2596 Yes. Christopher Barrett, the guy with the black nails, has been an employee at Bungie since CE, though he worked on Myth II before that, I guess as a contractor.
I'm hoping that the classic Marathon weapons return (especially the shotguns). And I speculate the Compilers lurking are remnants of the Pfhor invasion, but have since become isolated and "feral". No Pfhor to control them, no way to return to Lh'won, just scavenging for Jjaro relics just as the runners are.
That is a very interesting theory. I, for one, hope the AI combatants we face in the world aren’t limited to S’pht Compilers. One of my fondest memories of Marathon was overcharging a Pfhor Hunter with my Fusion Pistol, and watching the explosion kill all the Pfhor Fighters that surrounded it.
I dearly hope that the game delves more into Bernard Strauss's MIDA connection, the Jjaro connection to it all.

@@JacJGraham The Marathon series is primarily named after the UESC Marathon colony ship, which helped found a colony on Tau Ceti IV. The Marathon is actually the Martian moon of Deimos that had been hollowed out and turned into a spaceship. The first game begins with you, a nameless security officer, returning to the Marathon to fight back against an invasion of alien slavers known as the Pfhor. One of the alien species enslaved are the S'pht, part organic and part technologic. With direction from the rampant AI Durandal, you board the Pfhor's ship and break their control over the S'pht, allowing them to fight back against the Pfhor. While you've been fighting against the Pfhor in space, you learn that they had also completely wiped out the colony below.
This new Marathon game is set decades after, in which we as the runners are trying to salvage tech and gear from the remains of the colony. It seems that there are still S'pht Compilers roaming around, the Pfhor likely dead. The S'pht had been uplifted by another alien race called the Jjaro, who the S'pht worship. Perhaps the colony's real purpose was to find ancient Jjaro tech on Tau Ceti IV, which the roaming Compilers are looking for.
I have played the original Marathon games. I get the feeling this is gonna feel completely different. In a good way or a bad way, I guess we'll see.
100% since the originals were very single player focused and this clearly going to be a live service extraction shooter.
Kind of hoping for good. So many interesting story things can be done with the Extraction Shooter dynamic that aren't doable in a single player experience.

I hope they will eventually reboot the campaign in a modern game as well, because that is the only modern Marathon game I would have any interest in playing. I played the original Marathon during my lunch breaks in high school. It was an intense experience that started conversations among my friends based on how far we had gotten in the game and what we had found.
I struggle to see how a PvP extraction shooter is going to capture that essence.
Marathon should have gone in the direction of the Halo series: cinematic storytelling in a single-player experience with online PvP modes.

Yeah. I saw the teaser and got excited. "oh what's this??? A fast pace, intense shooter with Bungies level of polish and quality????"
I loved the intense techno, gothic music, I like the highly artificial poppy art style in the teaser. I like how the shot is a character running fast as possible.
I really got excited at the idea of a fast paced shooter with intense music. Haven't had a good game like that in a while I guess. Just a nice short single player experience with high polish and quality, something I can enjoy on the weekend which would be adrenaline filled, with awesome flowy gameplay, something I can just get into the zone with. Maybe some good story telling mixed in with some stuff that makes me do some deep thinking.

Seen so many dev logs like this and they almost always sound more interesting than they actually turn out to be lol. Not saying the game will be bad, but I doubt the experience will like how devs enthusiastically hype it. I've been so jaded by vids like this I've come to accept that ideas always sound cooler than execution.

I love Marathon’s universe and while I’m concerned about the genre shift, I think they can still deliver that juicy lore that I love so much about the original Marathon trilogy.
I’m cautiously optimistic.

Everyone uses the phrase "cautiously optimistic" about this like they haven't just spent a decade watching Bungie make the worst possible choices they could at any given time.

Yeah, I have 0, I mean ZERO faith in any of this. In no way whatsoever is this going to capture any of the essence of Marathon, so they are just reusing an old name and turning out another form of game that has zero value to me, requiring online play and incentivizing microtransactions. Not at all what I'm looking for.
I've taken to calling them Nu-Bungie. They're not the same Bungie that made Marathon, or Halo, or even the original Destiny for that matter.
Exactly. The entire video is just concept art sprinkled on a word salad. This entire game will be engineered like every other AAA title - to sell the ender user microtransactions for the rest of their life.

If the pvp weaponry is balanced and the maps are consistently updated then bungie’s sense of physics and feel will make this game a hit

I was a huge fan until they stopped updating the crucible maps, balance testing subclasses for release, and turned the weapon pool into a spreadsheet game where you had to roll the perfect hand cannon to have a shot at winning pvp. So yeah i hope marathon is better. Ya boi was like top 10 percent in the world in mayhem clash.
@@tabithadickerson2525 the reason Destiny pvp isn't balanced is because they need to consider how every single gun will work both in pve and also pvp, which no other game on the market has even attempted in the way Bungie has. So if they are building this game from the ground up with pvp in mind, I think they are going to do good.

If Marathon was coming back, I’d want to see a linear singleplayer campaign. The fact this is a multiplayer pvp extraction shooter just flies in the face of the themes of classic Marathon, and the emphasis on player choice kind of feels in opposition to the concept of Quantum Destiny established in Marathon Infinity.
The more I see/hear about this, the more it feels like cashing in on name recognition, and I’m not sure I trust modern Bungie with this brand. 90's Bungie or 2000's Bungie, sure, but not post-Destiny Bungie. I don’t have time to explain why I don’t have time to explain why that is, but it’s where I’m at.
When I first heard news of Marathon making a comeback, I was excited for a faithful retelling of the classic story, maybe even a remake/reboot like Doom and System Shock have been getting, but it seems my hopes have been dashed unless the multiplayer pvp game mode ends up being just a part of the full release.
I feel the same way. A friend told me about it and I dropped what I was doing to hunt down the trailer. As it finished I felt confused and filled with a sense of dread, like I was about to watch an entire game I loved get retconned.
The kicker is that on it's face this doesn't look like a bad game. I enjoyed The Cycle: Frontier, Escape from Tarkov, and Hunt: Showdown for essentially same style of gameplay.
I think we (OG Marathon players) are getting out of touch with modern trends in first person shooters, kids nowadays like this "runner extraction bs" just like we liked the deep lore single player experience in the 90. I'm starting to believe we are just getting old.

You might be confused with the battle royale genre, in extraction shooters your objective is to stay alive while looting as much as you can, not necessarily killing everyone...

Honestly it kind of sounds to me like a way to make a more cannon in-universe version of the world's first raid race teams from Destiny. Which, again, most people don't participate in that and it's fine the game gives you a full experience without that
I really hope the gameplay has fun physics like the old Halo games. Fun, physics based sandbox gameplay is Bungie to me. Can’t wait to see more!

We'll see more lore videos the closer we get to release. But maintain that enthusiasm for that game. Don't listen to all the doomsayers. Marathon will pull through Bungie always nails every game they release. Just hope for the best
Miss the epic single player Bungie experiences and it's a shame we are not getting that along side this multiplayer route their taking. Live service- while Bungie doing it better than most, we lose alot of potential.

Those who havent played the original Marathon trilogy and enjoy scifi games with a very deep plot have a new series to enjoy. I would highly recommend delving into the original story. You wont be dissapointed.

Marathon has been my favorite video game series, since Windows '95. It's lore fascinated me. It's single player was fantastic. But I enjoyed PVE tournament parties all the way back in 1996 😅 What great memories and carnage.

I love Marathon and all its lore and i love what Bungie can create. I know the mechanics will be solid.
I'm not a huge fan of competitive multiplayer games but more than that i don't see any visuals here that remind me of Craig Mullin's original Marathon concept art - which as a kid, was exactly what i'd imagine the Marathon universe would like with todays graphical capabilities.

@@nox2889 I doubt it’ll be a fully new aim assist system. Should follow Destiny. So keyboard/mouse will also get aim assist. Not just controller. Weaker, of course, but enough to balance the two.
@@gcarsk yeah that sounds like the reasonable route, i remember they had to add aim assit to kbm in halo cuz of how strong it is on controller xD so i feel they'd def avoid that by having it be like how they do it with destiny
The mention of disconnect recovery this early in the dev process is also positive. One of my biggest frustrations with CoD DMZ is that there is no disconnect recovery.

As great as the game looks, it's a shame that the source material is only being name-checked and, based on what I've read, there appear to be no plans for a single-player campaign to build on/reimagine the original trilogy that many of us grew up with.
It's probably best to leave the original trilogy story alone. They need to come up with their own stories. I won't be surprised if they we're connected. We do know every one died on tau ceti and everything being abandoned makes me think it is.
I completely agree, but it would be a lost opportunity if the new Marathon just became a looter-shooter Destiny clone.

Oh man, I'm glad I'm not the only one that had this thought. I miss BRINK and its art and story. Don't think we'll get to see a new take on parkour in games with Marathon, but nonetheless, I'm certainly looking forward to the art, and Bungie's unique storyline. Just hoping they don't go crazy with milking the cash cows, and can keep toxicity at bay.

Been watching Bungie Vidocs since Halo Reach. It’s always great to see what’s going on behind the scenes. These have been an inspiration for my pursuit of game development as well.

they barely tell you what's going on behind the scenes. they vaguely described things that could happen in the game which they havent shown. this was people talking to their coworkers about a game they already know about, pretending like they havent heard any of this before. it was mad cringe.
@@defunctchannel942 If Bungie could demonstrate the development of a map, show that they can create additional content at incredible speed and efficiency that would generate more hype than any gameplay trailer.
Bungie should just demonstrate that their developer tools are easy for developers to utilize and aren't full of vast amounts of technical debt that plagues all botched AAA releases.

I really hope their will be a campaign or PVE game mode ! I don't really like being stuck in a PVP gamemode being able to switch from competitive to a more private experience is always good in my opinion.

The easiest way to build a loyal fan base is by making a good single-player experience. Once that’s set, multiplayer should come naturally. It’s no accident that the old Halo movement & gunplay was amazing for multiplayer.
I don’t give a rat’s ass about some The Finals + Apex Legends sh*t thrown into a blender.
I really hope that we as players will unwittingly put together AI core like a Durandal or something simular as one of these artifacts

Never was really a huge Halo guy, but it _was_ a very fun experience the few times I got to play it and watching Bungie suplex its flaming corpse through the floor in recent years alongside Destiny has been very sad.

I got super hyped that Bungie was doing another singleplayer scifi story shooter with multiplayer part for a while. All these loot shooters with 29 XP bars just make me feel like I'm doing 9 to 5 instead of having any fun. :/

The only thing that concerns me is that I don't recognize any of the names in this video. Last two games I played where veteran studios put out games with names I didn't recognize were Mass Effect Andromeda and Back 4 Blood.

the original marathon was one of (if not THE) first game(s) i ever played. (and by played, i mean i was 4 watching my dad play them) i really really really hope this gets more people interested in the original story/games. if good things are built on the backs of giants, you shouldn't forget what made those giants who they are in the first place!!
Something that would be interesting is a set of casual modes for Marathon, like TDM, Donination, etc that yo could bring your extracted weapons and gear into without being able to lose them. A way to hone your PvP skills without fear of losing items.
This isn't a Marathon title, it's Tarkov with a recognizable brand
I just see them doing the exact same thing EA did when they murdered Titanfall 2, stripped the guts out of its corpse, and used them to make Apex Legends so they could corner their share of the popular BR format. Except they actually are the original owners of this particular IP, so it’s slightly less egregious.
I guarantee Bungie’s just hoping to yoink the Tarkov market before someone else does what Fortnite did to PUBG and they miss this golden goose.

Every time I go back and watch this again, I'm more and more convinced that someone snipped out the first 5 minutes of the video. Something that actually explained anything about the world and why we should want to exist in it. The first thirty seconds are _"In Marathon you're a Runner. You grind the game to make your character better."_

So disappointed that we arent seeing Bungue return to create single-player experiences with multiplayer as a side option. Could have been a return to form for them, instead its like they asked "Hey, what if we made Gambit an entire game? Ooo ooo and lets get in on that closing circle of death thing people like that!"
Now, I'm going to admit that I'm a bit disappointed that the new Marathon is going to be an extraction shooter instead of a remake or reimagining of the original trilogy, but I'm also somewhat optimistic; the artstyle is genuinely cool and unique, and you guys have enough experience with multiplayer games to make this a really fun experience.
Still, hoping for a future new singleplayer entry in the Marathon saga.
Honestly, they probably were going to have an easier time getting funding for a game more like this than a remake of the original games. Perhaps if this does well, they’ll get the go ahead to at least rerelease them.

I would temper those expectations. If you read what they said in their GDC conference, you’d know they aren’t a studio equipped to make single player only releases anymore, or even any games that aren’t live service.
They call them “boxed launches”, as in games that release to retail and that’s it, such as Halo. They talked at length at how they transformed themselves as a studio to support live games over boxed launches. I’m not saying they can never go back to that, but they are currently not equipped to do it.

They're not describing what Marathon is, they're describing a genre, they're describing what an extraction shooter is. You could read a Wikipedia article about Tarkov and have more information about Marathon than after watching this video
Marathon as a setting could certainly work for a tarkov-like extraction shooter, but Marathon as an IP turning into a PVP focused game is not what most fans would have wanted I believe. The Marathon games have one of the most interesting stories in gaming, especially for their time and I imagine most fans of it wanted more of that story. Or a remake of it at least. A remake with a pvp mode wouldn't be the worst idea, but going purely pvp makes me question why it's Marathon

They did remake a classic Marathon game with online PVP once, Marathon Durandal on XBLA. I think modern Bungie just prefers focusing on live service experiences, unfortunately, probably brings more money in.

Most people today remember Marathon for its story.
However, Marathon had an absurdly ahead-of-its-time multiplayer component too. All of the core ingredients for what would become Halo multiplayer were there, intact, all the way back in 1994. To the few of us who had access to a room full of Macs during those times, Marathon multiplayer is unforgettable.
When you take the original Marathon multiplayer into consideration, a PVP-focused reboot makes a lot more sense. The extraction genre is still raw. I think there's a lot of opportunity to infuse this game style with the kind of atmosphere and moodiness that defined the original Marathon series. It's hard to see, but I believe Bungie can pull it off.

I wonder if/how big a part fighting against environment and mobs will be. Also their track record with Destiny makes me hopeful that it might slowly grow and expand into other types of gameplay maybe other modes etc.

There are some incredible people on this team which does excite me. You think about people like Chris, Steve, and Scott and you see some of that "old Bungie" that people don't realize IS still there which is exciting. With them you see Destiny 1's original art design, or The Taken King's D1 revamp, or Forsaken's complete revamp of Destiny 2.
I heard something about being "Downed" which hopefully does not include a self revive, especially in a solo game experience. that feature slows down gameplay and i don't support it especially in a game where your one life matters. But So Far it sounds like this game will hit all the points that pvp gamers want right now, Speed, Movement, Looting, Competitiveness, Skill Gap. Looking Forward to hearing more and seeing some gameplay!
I'm a HUGE Marathon fan, but I'm not really into multiplayer games and kinda scared of them, especially the seasoned ones. What if I'm just being... late? Or getting started in the middle or even near the end of narration, do I miss everything that was before instantly? That doesn't sound good for such a story-driven franchise like Marathon... And what if I want to play it like 10, 20, 30 years later? Just "no"?
Am I getting it right? It's really sad if I do. Extremely hyped for the game, but at the same time very worried.

Hmm, I am very interested to see how this will work with groups/ teams. Since I can imagine that you play with friends and you play either for Loot or for Story. And also what happens once all other players have been eliminated? can the last player just go exploring? Is there PVE? Will new players join?

As someone with thousands of hours in Escape from Tarkov, Halo, and Destiny, this is like a dream come true for me. The most important thing to remember in extraction shooters is the playstyles of all players being available, and that the movement feels fantastically accented by gunplay. Those are really important. Some of people's favorite elements of Tarkov is literally just the immersive nature of moving affecting your gunplay and how every mechanic affects every other mechanic in a personal immersion context. So excited.
Are there game modes where your loot is safe, never played extraction shooters

I don't know how to feel about this. It's a cool homecoming for bungie but a PVP only feels kinda odd, if there are some PVE modes I might check this out but I don't know about getting domed from across the map from some guy who been playing for 72 hours straight doesn't seem too appealing. That just my take on this
Players were ALWAYS a key point in Marathon's story. I just wish that there was a campaign in progress too that could directly go off of Durandal's story

Tbh nothing in this video feels like Marathon, it seems like Bungie tried making their own Cyberpunk themed game and then just slapped the Marathon title on it.
Marathon according to me has one of the greatest sci-fi stories of all time. Its just mind blowing. Every single text in each terminal was memorable.
To ignore that single player experience and turn it into a multiplayer squad game seems like a very strange choice.
Again I hope I'm wrong, but if I see the same lay writing I've been seeing in Destiny, I'm gonna be pissed.
But then again this seems to be more of a spin-off and does not seem to be changing the main story or lore of the game, so no harm I guess.

When the rumours claimed that you were going to be playing as a "runner" in an upcoming Marathon-branded Escape from Tarkov knockoff, that was the part that convinced me the rumours were fake - I thought that was just too ridiculous to be true. They weren't _really_ going to think that the name "Marathon" referred to "running a marathon", were they?
Turns out they were.
That's what it meant when they made the original games, ironically- Bungie came up with a working title of "Marathon" because that's how it felt to play through the whole thing, and the name ended up sticking.
At the very least, the setting sounds like it's firmly anchored in the classic trilogy- judging by the website, we'll be looting the ruins of the USEC Marathon and its Tau Ceti colony after it was destroyed between M1 and M2. I'm still not too optimistic, but who knows?

I hate that Bungie is so focused on multiplayer games now. Ever since Halo blew up and multiplayer games became so massively profitable, Bungie really seems to have lost its way.
Yeah. The Bungie that made the original Marathon is dead, just like the Bungie that made the original Halo trilogy. I doubt this game will be anything more than a cookie-cutter Tarkov copy, in which case the people who play Tarkov will continue to just play Tarkov.
@@ericwood3709 Ha. Funny you say that, considering one of the biggest complaints about Destiny right now is that its dev team has been leaving its PvP content to wither up and die from neglect.
And Bungie has _always_ been about multiplayer. Damn near every one of its games from its inception has been multiplayer; they were making exclusively multiplayer games long before online multiplayer even existed! Hell, part of the reason the original Marathon was hell to make was because the devs were having too much fun nuking each other in PvP matches to actually finish the damn game.
@@LieutenantAlaki All three Marathon games have long campaigns and an overarching story, plus good multiplayer as an important add-on feature. Before that, I don't know what they did for multiplayer. Pathways Into Darkness was single player only, that I know. It was kind of their answer to Wolfenstein 3D and Marathon their answer to Doom, as the features of each pair match up pretty well. So no, Bungie has not "always been about multiplayer." They started out making single-player and mixed games. Halo was the same way, of course. It was when Halo got very popular and Microsoft got involved that Bungie and their focus changed radically, and thus their games became much more multiplayer-focused, and now multiplayer-only. Even Destiny with its PvE content is still a multiplayer game, a type of MMO from what I understand about it. There is a difference between having PvE content and a game being single--player, and perhaps that nuance is lost on some people nowadays.
I hope someday I can work with you guys. Being the designer for this IP should have been awesome for a designer. Those graphical art style and direction seems really unique and refreshing.
