Ok so it seems like a lot of people are missing the point of this comparison, which is probably my fault for not making it clearer. The point is not to say that "Terraria is better than Minecraft, you shouldn't enjoy or play Minecraft because Terraria is more fun". I'm saying that Terraria is the perfect player experience, it does everything that people want a game to do, while Minecraft misses those things pretty hard. Terraria is cheap, there's basically no monetization, it's on a convenient launcher (steam), there's a small team of loving developers who respond to the community, the game has continued to get free updates for over a decade, and modding was made as convenient and accessable as possible for free. Like I said, Minecraft is not impossible to download and play (and mod), but it has enough annoying barriers that will keep far more people from fully enjoying the game. Whereas Terraria has basically none of those barriers. And to take things a step further, Terraria's development team is practically nonexistent compared to the massive team producing Minecraft, which ultimately is all backed by Microsoft. It's Bill Gates Vs. Redigit and somehow Redigit is able to absolutley demolish Minecraft in it's accessibility and ease of use. As for why I chose to contrast Terraria's perfection to Minecraft's flaws, I mean c'mon I think the best selling video game of all time backed by the ultra giga-corporation Microsoft can handle some criticisms. P.S. Making Minecraft models is easier than making Terraria sprites, fight me
I tried making sprites for my terraria mod and it was actual hell Terraria sprites on paper look really basic but make it look super good like how re logic make it is super hard not to mention sprite for block and armor
I disagree, neither are perfect player experiences really, not exactly it has flaws too, not really it does what it is supposed to do. True, those annoying barriers do suck but Minecraft's price is fair. You act like Microsoft it self handles all of Minecraft which isn't really true. It really isn`t Bill Gates vs Redigit. Except A. Teraria itself can be criticized for it's actual in game flaws too B. it is also one of the best selling video games of all time and C. Microsoft does not handle all of Minecraft themselves. You got proof of that final claim? Because I doubt it is true.
in a nutshell Minecraft and Terraria are both good games but they have their own flaws they are perfect in their own way and every update that Minecraft and Terraria gives will have it’s ups and downs, also ignore the name I don’t really care about TH-cam besides watching and learning enjoying myself and not stressing about making video’s besides posting art and such rarely on other social media platforms.
i had a world years ago and on my first seed within the first 10 minutes i found an enchanted sword! i was new so i didn’t think much of it and i quit the game for ages. I start the game again thinking of all the memories i created and i went to a new world and started another terraria adventure and im glad it has still got popularity thank you and thank terraria
while Terraria is only 9.99$ I still managed to spend 50$ on it, not because I bought it from a wrong site or anything. No the reason I spend so much on it is because, I can't stop gifting it to my friends! Like no one deserves to miss out on this masterpiece of a game!
That’s a big difference between big corporations and a small team of devs. Not to say Terraria has a small team of indie game devs, but it certainly feels like they still have that mindset
this ^^^ anytime the terraria devs take a step back, they take 3 steps forward and create something cool out of the fuck-up. Minecraft used to be like this; it's how we got the Creeper, the 'Hell' biome, Hardcore Mode, Infinite Worlds, etc. A constant forging and emergent game which took fan feedback whilst not compromising on its vision and creating more. Terraria devs continue to do this, constantly replying to tweets and suggestions with something amounting to "Ok. Sounds cool. We'll add it." It's why we're getting new secret seeds, weapon types, diversity, journey mode, built-in goddamn SKYBLOCK to the next update. Mojang still refuses to do anything interesting about Phantoms, Inventory Issues, the End in general, Combat in general, etc. If the Terraria devs had any of this issues so poorly received in their game, they'd come back with 3x more content as an apology within the year.
The developers of Terraria are legends. They interact with the community often, make cool events and even add fan suggestions into the game, while Minecraft devs barely take a single peep from the community into account.
That's completely natural for a small indie dev team. For how corporate and conservative mojang have to be because of microsoft and delicacy of the game's systems, they still do a commendable amount of fun things
@@Pyrodiac Terraria does votes better than mc, When you realize that they took a vote to see if the players would want the update to come soon or if they would delay it to make it even better..... you can easily see the difference in communication between the communities, my respect goes to the indie games and games from medium/small developers.

As a game designer and programmer, I absolutely agree that making minecraft is a lot easier than making terraria. For example, you can see it by watching videos where some random guy creates minecraft in 1 week. Most of people think that when something is 3D, then it is much harder, but actually it always depends on the game
@@Foxerskimaking 3d it's a lot easier yeah, and even more with that blocky textures, I really respect re logic for making thousands of sprites that look different from each other
I agree but its a bit of an unfair comparison. Terraria plays more like an rpg than a sandbox. Minecraft plays like a sandbox that can become an rpg. A solid 70% of terraria mods are also just extra weapons, mobs, bosses, terraforming, and items. There are some unique mods like Terraria Overhaul that changes how the game feels but thats about it. Minecraft mods can change the entire genre from a 3d zombie shooter, battle royale, party games, souls-like, to recently a rougelite. Minecraft can somewhat compete in the rpg scene but the lack of innovation is holding it back.
What makes Terraria super good is its replayability. Not only do I unlock new content within the game for playing it and defeating bosses. but I can play the game multiple times over and have a different experience each time. Including the fact multiplayer is that easy to access, and mods are such high quality compared to Minecraft. Just showed how loved of a game it is by its community and developers. Truly a game I will miss, and one that brings a greater sense of satisfaction compared to the many times I've attempted to get back into Minecraft.
yeah terraria mods do feel like "oh i installed this popular mod and somehow my terraria got triplicated its content with literally no issues and a quality that is as good as the original game"
1.4.4 is still not the final update, 1.4.5 is coming out soon, which will include a crossover with dead cells, supposedly 1.4.5 will be the final update, but they've been calling updates the final update for like 7 years so who knows
What I liked about minecraft was how wacky but cohesive it was. As a kid I found the world and mobs super interesting because they were sort of all over the place and unique and funny looking. Nowadays minecraft only adds animals. Terraria is like old minecraft, it's got sniper riffles and magic staffs and wings, things players really want, while still feeling like it's one really thought out game.
Made me think of the statement: "We won't add any hostile mobs that are real animals" They prioritize animal protection and becoming Peta over actual fun.
@@FibblejoeTerraria: sooo the bees are un extincion, and for that the bees kill You, rather painfull and slow, and a BOSS to givie nigthmares to the inocent honey thieft

@@Fibblejoebecause minecraft is mainly for kids and kids are in most cases stupid. And people who play terraria probably know that you aren’t supposed to kill bees or other animals, especially when they are important for ecosystem.
@@Poptanic yeah but then they go overboard with it. They removed fireflies entirely because a different mob isn't supposed to eat them? Just have them not eat the fireflies????? At this point it seems like it's just an excuse for them to be lazy and not add things like hostile mobs that exist in reality and fireflies, again prioritizing a lot of other things over actual fun.
I kinda like Minecraft, ngl. But vanilla survival does get boring after a while if you're not into building. Just started playing Terraria couple of months ago and I have to say, it has so much more to do. It never ever gets boring. Also I hate Mojang. It's like they're intentionally trying to piss off it's fanbase. Doing stupid mob votes that only causes controversies and giving people what they want only to remove/nerf it (I am talking about the fireflies and copper bulb). Just fucking why?
Playing or talking about Minecraft often just upsets me because I see how much potential the game has, and they just continue to squander it every year.
Red actually responds to and treats terraria’s players as friends, and MANY terraria items and changes are because of that. Not requiring any fancy mob votes or anything, just talking about ideas with one of the devs. Also, the devs are a lot easier to talk to than Minecraft devs because they just act like normal people. They don’t just ignore messages and replies from players like Minecraft does.
Yall don't know how things works 💀💀💀. Mojang has added a bunch of features that the community asked even after it was bought by Microsoft. Yall just like to cherry pick on things because a specific thing wasn't added . The mob votes were supposed to be fun but yall ruined because you could get passed your biased .
@@DojafishBroz they're doing it too slow and too late. Like wolf armor had been a feature that all of the playerbase wants, and they locked it in a 33% chance mob vote. Also, don't lie, you know vanilla minecraft is boring af, you ain't gonna terraform the End.
I think that Minecraft really lost its original soul. The newer updates feel super empty and bland. It’s either nostalgia or the ruining of the game. For me, it’s probably a mix of the both.
yeah the updates are so mid, it doesn’t give me motivation to get back on my hours gone world especially since if your world was pre update, you have to travel far to find the new content generate
I regretted not speaking up when the devs made 1.4.4 since the devs were taking in a bunch of community feedback. But despite 1.4.5 not being meant as a community update, they've gone back to adding tons of community ideas anyway, so I have a 2nd chance to get my ideas into the game. The fact that the Terraria devs "unintentionally" listen to the community significantly more than the Minecraft devs really speaks volumes about them and their games.
This is the video I believe many Terraria players wanted to make but never did because they are afraid they will get flamed in the comment. I agree with every single point in this video and wouldn't ask for any more, thank you so much for making this.
Sometimes, stuff only is enjoyable when it ends. There's fulfilment in completing things, on accomplishing things. You can always play modded or do challenges with playing in a specific way. There's an infinite array of things you can do after it ends. The story ends, but not the fun.
Terraria was basically such a passion project that at one point when Redigit's kid got into Terraria, they asked Redigit to add in a dinosaur mount. And Redigit's response was "Sure, why not". Redigit genuinely said this on his twitter account
Overall, I think there is some skepticism about this "rivalry" and it is kind of mind-blowing how these communities forget that these games are totally different experiences, this two are literally besties and search a totally different game loop, terraria is mare about the excitement of all the things that you can do that will always keep you doing something and minecraft its more about doing your own thing and find your own way to enjoy the game while just living the moment, I kinda get it terraria always has been kind of an underdog while minecraft has been EXPLOITED by content creators and I think these communities should just enjoy this games as best as they can
It’s two different players who prefer either game. For those who want to play on their own terms, are creative, are technical and doesn’t need strict game progression, Minecraft is a lot better. The kind of players that prefers Terraria are those who need strict game progression, doesn’t have too many things to do at the same time and really likes PvE.
While u are right, i find terraria way more fun, playing both since they released on the 360. The only thing i find fun at all in minecraft nowadays is what other people who actually care make. Minigame servers, modpacks, etc. Without them i doubt a lot of people would still enjoy minecraft. Ive had some of my best memories on the game as a kid, but now it doesnt feel the same. Ever since microsoft bought minecraft its only gotten worse imo. Terraria has an amazing base game with so much to do with hundreds to even thousands of fun and viable mods that are right there on the steam page instead of risking ur accounts or even worse because of some RAT or virus on a sketchy site.
that's certainly fair, although i'd definitely agree with the main point of the vid, even if i personally prefer terraria way more, i can't help but also be massively disappointed by how SQUANDERED Minecraft is in terms of it's updates, and the general handling of the Minecraft IP. Where as it is utterly insane how good and consistent the terraria updates are. I really wish i can enjoy minecraft more than I do right now, the two games certainly aren't trying to compete. but damn. I feel like even if I prefered Minecraft I'd call Terraria the superiorly made and maintained game.
Just imagine how good Terraria 2 will be. Also, Terraria 2 has basically been confirmed at this point, which is mainly because the Terraria engine is too limiting, and they want something that has nearly no limits. As someone that’s played a good deal of both games. Just wanted to say I totally agree with all your points! It’s very rare you find game devs that care about the quality of the game more than its marketability. That’s why more and more of these AAA studios are pumping out unfinished uninspired cash grabs. I mean, look at Terraria itself, the way that the game grew and expanded over the years, and the way that it reflects on the game progression itself: how you play the game and approach obstacles completely changes as you progress. Even building improves with the tools you acquire. In Minecraft, you pretty much only get better quality gear, with a few exceptions. And almost none of those hours were wasted on main title, but playing and enjoying it. Defeating the wall of flesh, getting the rod of discord, listening to wacky jungle rock while beating a freaking plant, then defeating a moon god is unmatched and every time feels like the first. But a few years ago, I tried ranger and Calamity rogue after that, and it was awesome. It was a feeling I had when playing mage for the first time. Just a completely new perspective on the game. How I built my arenas, how I use my armor, which stats are important etc. Fast forward to today I played every class at least 3 times, at least 1 on each difficulty (because of how those were added one after another). And after master mode on every class and Calamity death mode on rogue and summoner, I can now say that every class is equally fun just in a different ways. I still play vanilla game sometimes tho. Just building and relaxing. And if you get bored grinding, install something like luiafk. It may seem cheaty, but I only use it for things and potions I already farmed for a lot before. Generally, using QoL mods speeds up the pacing and allows skipping tedious parts. Pumping up difficulty with mods also helps, since it essentially forces you to either hope for luck and spend tens of tries on bosses or look for stuff to make fights easier and learn something new. I still remember times I defeated bosses on the first try by sheer luck, and times I died even though I thought I was prepared and expected an easy fight. I hope this helps. And remember to take the brakes sometimes. Despite how I love this game I'm rarely able to play more than 2 playthroughs in a row even with different mods.
Terraria actually had a spin-off/ alternate universe game. Terraria: Otherworld had quite a lot of potential but in the end they cancelled it. You can still get the music from the game though, which I think is interesting.
Terraria Overworld was about to be an official game, but the amount of content and mechanics that has and not so many peoples got interested on it, they had to close this game for good. Well the point is, the sequels were never released. I definitely should have mentioned them in that point, but a lot of work that went into those was completely scrapped without them making any money. The big difference is that Terraria isn't scared to change things. Minecraft is scared to make the game too different. You could be told that Terraria released yesterday and the game does feel like that, while if you said that for Minecraft, there's too much old and outdated content in Minecraft. Mojang needs to either go back to the old style of updates, or update more old content. I personally think the first option is better, as it feels like the most well-thought-out and well-made feeling features are the older ones.
This is why I dont like Terraria. If the devs love the game so much but want to change it, they should make a sequel. A new game to change the mechanics but keep the original energy, you know. Most people who played PS2 games illegally used to buy a game for 5 BRL. Minecraft? It has been around a 100 BRL since 2012. It's just stupidly expensive. Only kids in kinda rich families used to play Minecraft in PC legally, kids who have good PC, Xbox and/or Playstation 4, because then their parents would agree to spend this much into a game that has less content than its level of price use to offer.
My favorite part about the Terraria devs is how open they are to new ideas, constantly thinking of/taking community suggestions for cool unique things to add to the game. Minecraft devs seem to avoid interesting or useful features at all costs. And more importantly, they avoid simple quality of life changes that would take literally no time to implement.
Right? like instead of implementing changes that the players would like, they instead suggest their own useless changes in the form of mobs or items and have the players vote on something completely new that they never even asked for. Players aren't excited by something new, they're excited by the freedom of choice that Minecraft has never given them.
As a Terraria and Minecraft player, that has been playing both for years, I can confidently say *Your statement are absolutely correct.* It really are a shame when Microsoft just decided to squeeze the heck out of Minecraft. If I'm being honest, I feel like Minecraft has lost its soul it used to have. The enjoyment and fun have decreased by a mile. I think everyone can agree that Minecraft rarely listen to us, nor they jump in to be part of the community, unlike the devs of Terraria. I hope Microsoft realize just how bad their decision are by making this small and almost _meaningless_ update to Minecraft (such as the mob vote...) Because in my opinion, if this keeps going, the Minecraft we know and love could potentially meet its end.
Oh, and one thing to add why Terraria's player experience are better in my opinion are the progression. Minecraft's game progression hasn't changed much, while Terraria do. But, Minecraft whole focus is about creativity though, so it's understandable why there aren't any major progression update.
As someone who played and loved both Terraria and Minecraft, I always considered them incomparable. Terraria is more of an action game, while Minecraft is a more chill game. I never play Terraria expecting a 2d Minecraft, and I never play Minecraft expecting a 3d Terraria, which is why Terraria mods for minecraft never really caught my attention.
For me Terraria is the pixel sandbox boss based RPG I wanted Minecraft to be. Over all the years ive generally lost interest in Minecraft due to the lack of new genuine progression and bosses. Instead they seem to be focused on blocks and just adding more irl animals as mobs while modders can do that and then some in 1/20th of the time Mojang can. As great as the nether/cave updates were ive lost passion for the direction Minecraft is going even as a childhood fan and instead picked up Terraria and its everything I wanted Minecraft to evolve into. Terraria makes you feel like a God by the end and MC on the other hand has 3 main bosses two of which (the wither and the elder guardians) have TERRIBLE rewards with extremely niche uses to the point where they are pretty much only worth doing for the sake of it for most players.
I think the difference is that Terraria is a thoroughly fleshed out game made out of passion and love by a small team of dedicated developers, while Minecraft has become a monetised mess with shallow updates that add features that lead nowhere and don't tie in with anything else in the game, such as copper. One focused on making their game the best it can be, while the other lives off the brand name to sell boring spinoffs to kids.
@@thegrayghoul4638I think it would be perfectly okay for Minecraft to have no bosses if they had a direction for their game. Most of the updates are extremely shallow, lack attention to detail and lead nowhere. The bosses are boring because they just exist for the sake of having a boss in the game. The End itself was always an artificial, extrinsic goal in a game where the real fun comes from making up your own goals.
Yeah the appeal of Minecraft for me is building cool shit. The lack of an entire dimension in Terraria means that building stuff just isn't as satisfying. Also, Terraria is fundamentally more of a combat focused RPG with a long series of clear goals that you are railroaded into doing, which is something that I don't care for.
I've played both games for a decent amount of time each, both multiplayer and single player, and I can confidently say that Terraria has been able to keep my attention much longer than Minecraft has. And another thing I like about Terraria that you could've mentioned is the fact that the devs want to have fun making the game just as much as the players want to have fun playing it, they add random joke items just because they thought it would be funny like a whoopee cushion that drops from a worm for some reason or gravity defying cactus balls to annoy players because why not. Compared to Minecraft which feels like it has had joy slowly drained out of it with every update feeling somewhat underwhelming and lacking on some features that they promised before, Terraria's updates just drop whatever the heck the devs find useful, funny, challenging, and/or playful, and let the players have fun with them however they wish
After the many many controversies (like their reason not to add sharks or the recent anti-gun thing) I feel like mojang despises terraria. Also they're probably politically biased against adding certain stuff to the game (like sharks (again) or fireflies). Not to mention the 1.17, 18, 19 & 20 updates, utter trash (excluding the warden).
I prefer minecraft for the multiplayer minigame servers singleplayer is like the most boring thing ever never understood why you would even play minecraft singleplayer
Why are you comparing them? They're not even remotely similar games. Just because they both have squares and building that doesn't mean they're trying to be the same thing. Terraria is, at its core, a combat focused game. It has building, yes, but it is not the focus. Minecraft is pretty much the exact opposite. It has enemies for you to fight, but they are not the focus. It is digital lego, and when you understand that, the more you will appreciate the love that goes into it. If you go into Minecraft expecting 3D Terraria, yeah, you'll be disappointed. BECAUSE THAT'S NOT WHAT IT IS
You should 100% make a sequel video to this, i'd love comparing core gameplay mechanics like bosses. i can just imagine the difference fighting a side by side of calamity's exo mechs versus the lich king from the twilight forest mod lol. anyways, great video.
i was very bored on my summer holidays and then my friend came and bougth me terraria. i did 1 playthrogh with him and it was SO GOOD, it was probably the most fun ive ever had in a videogame, since then i literally know everything about this game
I just picked it uo for the first time after seeing it arounf for like 10 years. Been playing mknecraft with my girl for about 6 years. Every couple months we start a world and have fun but now we jave beat the ender dragon, wither, and even the warden a couple times, we have several maxed out worlds, with litteraly nothing new, and anything they do add is like "heres copper you cant make any gear, and it doesnt interact with anything else but it rusts over time". And any loot you get is like heres a diamond sword, it behaves EXACTLY like the wooden sword but its just better stats. In Terraria in the first 4 hours i found a staff that summons a bird on my head that fights for me, a magic wand that shoots fire, made a sword out of cactus (that has different mechanics than the starting sword), a mace, tons of potions that teleport, fly, affect gravity, a fish that summons a shark to by my buddy, and fished another shark that acts like a chainsaw, boots thay let ke slide down walls, a necklace that acts as a light source, mines probably 5 different ores, and fought probs around 20 different enemies, found all sorts of other stuff underground (including a giant nest of antlions) and i just killed the eyeball boss. And from what i saw i jave barely scratched the surface of content. Like its INSANE how you fond COOL stuff ALL THE TIME, every chest im like WHOAAA A FLUTE THAT SUMMONS SNAKES I CAN CLIMB, instead of word 2 diamonds and 9 bread and a saddle.
I've noticed the same when playing with my friend. The Minecraft "magic" has worn of, while we still enjoy doing Terraria runs. I love both games, but oh well..
Granted Minecraft has enchants and a lot of building stuff and stuff you can do with commands and new weapon types too, also what makes the cactus sword different? Terraria doesn't even have as many biomes or structures or dimensions as Minecraft have (both in content and literally Minecraft has 3 dimensions). And nothing in Terraria is like the Warden either. And Minecraft worlds can be infinite and you can do anything in it really. Hell Minecraft a 3D game has a better ocean biome then Terraria a 2D Game...like why would it be so hard to make the ocean more immersive like Miencraft did?
Yeah it's just sad because Minecraft lack the point where's the player have main objective such as bosses and progression feeling after triger and finished something it's make it feels so plain and the developer kinda forcing the player to push their creativity instead of helping player by giving more block
I lost my creativity with Minecraft years ago, before, me and my cousins would build very big, great, and sometimes questionable stuff on our superflat world, survival was more of a side quest, for us, creative was where it's at, so many ideas, so much free time on our hands, we would just go way off, building mansions, roller coasters, houses, machines, sus pixel art, you name it, sky really was the limit. And then survival became more and more popular, we got influenced, and with that, we just lost our love and passion for building. Minecraft used to be a game that encouraged creativity, but now, it's just all gone, beating the game continuously can only keep you entertained for so long, the fun came from the buildings and magnificent art we would all create, now, this trend of "beating the game" has completely made that fun obsolete.
@@toastyboi8737well for me that’s the spark of a game, the ongoing playability! there’s mobs you can fight for a reason, and building only gets you so far (for me) it’s kinda more fun for me to get op armor, tons of villagers to sell you op stuff, building especially in survival is a hassle im not willing to do to get the materials, and i like the combat more, but i don’t like creative to just build either and i understand other people enjoy that more so it’s cool you find enjoyment in it still! i don’t sadly , i guess that’s why my preference is terraria
I remember Andrew spinks saying he wanted more of a purpose out of Minecraft and was mostly a big part of what drove him to make Terraria, This desire for a sense of purpose in Minecraft is what led the development of Terraria. I think this is where modpacks really shine for Minecraft if you want a sandbox game that also can give you objectives. Been playing/watching Hat Films play the Vault Hunters modpack and it's a blast to play. There's plenty of modpacks to choose from as well that can give you all sorts of fun goals. I remember playing one called Project Ozone I think? You basically are tasked with bringing life back to the world through the use of various mods. I stopped playing it eventually because my PC at the time was chugging when I tried to play the pack. Whoops...
Terraria updates = "Here's 100 more items, a couple new bosses that drop crazy weapons, and a few more accessories for your ingame avatar, also we added that dinosaur from that one fanart as a pet cause we thought it was cute." Minecraft updates = "Here's a new biome where you can mine slightly different colored rock inhabited by some weird monsters that don't drop anything useful because we decided encouraging killing wildlife in a survival game is offensive. And no, you can't make fences or bricks with that rock."
Small correction; the base price for Terraria at launch was $15, lowered to $10 sometime after 2016. It goes on sale all the time, even back in 2011 you had several chances to buy it for as little as $5. Minecraft's 1.0 launched at $26.95 (prior to this you could buy beta access for less and carry access to the "final product"), raised to $30 sometime after 2016. It almost never goes on sale; in fact I don't think I've ever seen it below $20 at best, and that was before the microsoft acquisition. The value comparison has only gotten better over time.
@@toffykoala32 when I got it on mobile in like 2013 it was $5, idk abt pc old price cuz I just bought pc Minecraft for the first time a few days ago lol
I'd like to point out one small thing, which is lag and overall clunkiness, in terraria you can really precisely dodge boss attacks, even on multiplayer not experiencing lag and glitches, while Minecraft can get extremely clunky, especially combat on multiplayer can be really laggy and enemies literally receive damage after a short delay
Minecraft's progression sucks. To get from 0 to diamond gear, you don't need to go on an adventure, looking for interesting structures and fighting various bosses. No, you need to find a village, breed and zombify the villagers, then get the diamond trades from an armorsmith and break and place the lectern repeatedly to get a librarian that sells Mending. After that, build an xp farm to enchant your gear and dig straight for an hour in the nether to get netherite, and voila, you have reached the top. No interesting encounters or challenges. No utilization of a variety of mechanics. Nothing.
@@alvaro1379He’s making a point, you just refuse to listen. Terraria has a generally better « journey to the top » system, with how many weapons, ores, and materials are locked behind specific events and bosses, whilst minecraft has a very simple process which can be, for some people, boring
To be fair they did change the way to get Netherite gear and you now need to find and raid a Bastion at least once for a Netherite upgrade template. For what it's worth.
If I wanted to play a game for progression, I wouldn’t play Minecraft, I’d play a generic RPG. Minecraft is amazing for me because it was a complete subversion of the mechanics of traditional adventure/RPG games, and is great because of the abstract little moments that is had in its simple construction.
@@CafeCharlie Oh lol mb. Like to see that you are responding to comments even 8 months later. I really liked this video and 100% agree with all of your takes in this video and I also love both games, but terraria is overall just a better game
As a lifetime veteran for both games, the novelty wears off after a while. First minecraft satisfies simplistic needs, then terraria offers a lot more seemingly unique experiences, but then becomes very limited where you start appreciating minecraft more, in part specifically FOR the emptiness and what it allows
@@orihiho2978 First i don't owe anyone an explanation, plus when the hell did i say terraria was empty, it's MINECRAFT's emptiness and freedom that lets you do stuff outside main game that you just can't in terraria
Both are games of my childhood, but Terraria has stuck with me. I haven’t really played MC, or had the desire to play in years. Terraria has always had my heart as my favorite game ever.
Same here. Now and then I'll install MC and play it a little, but I always get bored and stop playing pretty soon. Terraria, on the other hand, I could play through a million times and never get bored.
terraria is just easier to play. It has something to do except sandbox stuff, so it's always easy to return to it. So even if u dont feel like building a 401203012301200312 square meters building u can at least hop on to defeat some bosses or farm for some random stuff
I agree. You get addicted to Minecraft and play for two weeks without touching grass and then you just leave it in the dust. Terraria has its ways of keeping the game interesting no matter how long you play.
@@benismann It's not easier but it's simpler than Minecraft. Terraria is a world where you can have the much freedom you want, if you're stuck on something there is another path to walk(classes, bosses, etc), while in Minecraft because of the lack of content you really only have to go one path because you're forced to( overworked - nether - end )
mojang: NO, WERE NOT GONNA ADD SHARKS BC PPL WILL KILL THEM, HOWEVER WE WILL ADD A SHITTY ASS SMELLING RED COW terraria: yes, we're gonna add literal shit :)
One of the kindest things terraria has ever done happened. Re-logic got a call from the make a wish foundation, and they said a boy wanted to have his very own skin, and they actually made it in the update 1.4.5
I genuinely wish I could have my memory completely wiped of playing Terraria so I can experience EVERYTHING from it again. Was genuinely one of the most fun games just to learn and explore. That said, I also don't wish it because I have SO much nostalgia and memories playing Terraria from over a decade ago now (which is insane to me). I remember my brother getting the game on the X-box 360 and getting me to play it for the first time. I joined in, had no idea what I was doing or what was going on. But then I was given my first sword ever in the game by my brother, the starfury. Then he showed me the "hellevator" which in this case just led down to the underground Jungle where he had a Plantera arena set up. Now everytime I go to the underground Jungle or just think about it, I get super nostalgic. As well as every time I get the starfury again. Memories come flooding back to me. Simpler times.
Thats hit different, i remmember one of the first terraria version that didn't even had different sound for specific blocks, like every block you mind just had the sound of destroying dirt, and it was like one of the first version of terraria, frick im getting old...
@@TheMcZioms Sometimes I will just load up an old save with many memories left on it, wander around and just appreciate the vibes of the music with all the sites where me and my friends had built or accomplished something. The nostalgia it brings is unreal. No game (aside from TF2 for me) is more nostalgic than Terraria. Even Minecraft, while nostalgic, isn't as extreme as Terraria is, in that department.
the minecraft devs also push way too many restrictions onto their creativity. Like they’ve explicitly stated that they’ll never add sharks or furniture and don’t really have too many great reasons to back up their choices. There’s also the annual updates and the update themes that constantly get in the way of interesting and built up features. It’s hard to distinguish a lack of care from the developers or if the lacklustre updates are all due to their creativity essentially being capped.
they'll never add sharks because they are being hunted to extinction and adding them to minecraft would teach kids that killing sharks gives you a reward. They'll never add furniture because it would limit creativity. having to design your own things like furniture is one of the things that makes minecraft appealing to so many people.
@@Ethan_Cubed the shark one is stupid. Who says you have to hunt them for them to be in the game? Sharks may be hunted frequently but they’re also a key part of reef ecosystems, so teaching kids that instead of “kill shark because shark bad” as so many other forms of media do would do more good than bad, and raise awareness for it similar to how they did with pandas and axolotls. The furniture one isn’t as bad but it’s still not fantastic, even despite the many workarounds, some people may find that what they had in mind is simply impossible or at least overly difficult to pull off and discourage them from trying similar things. It doesn’t have to explicitly be furniture but maybe just more ways to tweak tables and chairs without having too much hassle. The simple ability to right click on stairs and sit down would be even less work to implement but still give players a challenge to add a little extra creativity. Ironically, despite encouraging creativity for players by putting roadblocks for them here and there, when mojang encounters any similar blockages they just give up.
@@Ethan_Cubed terraria has sharks, and encourages killing them for a high-tier ranged weapon, i dont think there was a spike in shark-hunting because of it
@@dragonslayer7724 best selling videogame probably haves to do, and minecraft is surely more popular with kids than terraria, personally i havent played terraria tho and it doesnt seem bad but the shark thing does make sense
I like this video; however, Minecraft has a modpack loader for the Java Edition called Cursed Forge, which is the overall way to play mods in that game. You don't download it separately, but it comes in a huge package where all the mods are interconnected. So, I think it's somewhat unfair to use the store that no sane human uses for a version that no one should play on PC, Bedrock/Windows 10 Edition
It’s hurts to hear this but its true, i played both games when i was young and love them for different reasons. I found myself at different times playing one more then the other. However, Minecraft feels more nostalgic to me while terraria still has me in, They are both great games but Minecraft lost something
It lost its sense of being a videogame, some of the last few updates they added foxes, bees, dolphins, goats, pandas, camels, axolotl and such; I was far more interested in Warden, and the new Nether mobs cause back then - they had creepers, enderman, witch, skeleton horse... and now they focus on endangered species and try to make their game realistic... it doesn't feel like game-world anymore
Minecraft -Has a bunch of unnecessary sequel games -Has mob votes that players hate -Barely cares about the community Terraria -Doesnt have unnecessary sequel games -Adds stuff that players want -Cares about the community a lot
One thing you totally should have mentioned was the progression system; not just the amount of content, but the ways in which it's used. It's why I got bored of Minecraft so quickly, yet have over 2,000 hours in Terraria.
I remember seeing this a long time ago, and tought you were just a silly hater. But seeing this video got me curious, and i ended up buying the game. That was the best desition of my life. I really want to thank you for making this video, because of it I staryed playing terraria, and enjoyed it as nobosy did...
Terraria… I have gotten so many good memories from it. And i have made so many friends due to it. Actually the Calamity Mod was the thing that brought me to a friend group and i have never felt so happy in there, its a place i could call my home a place where i could escape to. I truly wouldn’t know where i would be of Terraria didn’t exist.
I’d easily agree with all your points, but I do wish terraria had a better tutorial system for beginners. Every time I play I’ve got like 10 wiki pages open cuz I have no idea what things are lol
while i do understand this point, i don't really see how they would implement it into the game without taking away from the overall feel of it. Like, its one thing i've always liked about terraria is just the fact that you're dropped into a world and told nothing and you not only survive, but you prosper as well. Also, the guide is there to give you some early game advice and he also shows you every single crafting recipe that any item in your inventory can make. The guide i think is an effective tutorial system.
I suppose, last time I played though, Minecraft isn’t any better in that aspect (then again it matters less what you do in Minecraft, since it’s all up to you)
yeah minecraft has that kind of tutorial, because its so famous. You can just watch a video and bam you can beat the game. This is also why Terraria has so many items, classes etc. To give different experiences each time. While minecraft is really straight forward and you can beat it in 10 minutes
imo, a better wording for your title would be "How Terraria is a near perfect 2D sandbox (and why Minecraft will never be for 3D). Because the big difference between Minecraft and Terraria is the 2D/3D. This means Terraria can't replace Minecraft, yet the latter has a lot to learn from his 2D rival.
@@KhairulHarisKhairulAnuar that was the gift that I received, I played Terraria before Minecraft. I came to love Minecraft for it's own flavor but Terraria is by far my favorite of the two.
None is better than the other, both are amazing in their own ways. And they are so different that it is completely based on the player and what they want from a game.
Well they are both games about mining and exploring. How many games do you know that are about those two things specifically that aren't just Minecraft clones? 😂
@@tomastregr2899 I know. Terraria is just too original to compare really and Minecraft was a trend setting game. Both are great but I think Minecraft fell off a few years ago in my opinion.
My Terraria experience goes like this: I open a new world, beat the game. I open another new world and beat the game, but this time with a different class. I open yet another new world and beat the game one more time, then resort to building more advanced NPC housing. Or sometimes, i simultaneously do multiple worlds, like im doing in Calamity. In Minecraft, I open the game, beat the game. Then i make a new world, in creative mode and resort to building. And i forget about the game for some time... My rambling aside, this was an amazing video and i 100% agree with you dude!
The biggest mistake you can make playing Minecraft is to stop after “beating” the game. For me, the game only *really* starts once I have the max gear, my elytra and both a sugarcane farm and a gunpowder farm so I have an unlimited supply of rockets. That’s when I can finally start to slowly chip away at everything you can possible do in this game. Probably starting with farming every resource in the game to build new things or to collect even more resources and then decorate everything and make nice paths between the places, etc.
@@8is I get you completely, but in Minecraft i just dont feel any progression signs. The only one there is is when you beat the Ender Dragon, but then you are already done with the majority of the game. And the Wither is the even more forgettable boss that you fight just to make a beacon, not to get any new armor or weapons. Not to mention the Warden... Considering the building, i cant say im good at it, but the building in Minecraft is not as diverse as Terraria. I really enjoyed playing Minecraft from 2012 to 2020, when i discovered Terraria.
@@constellar6330 The building in Minecraft is far better than in Terraria. Mostly because of Minecraft being 3d. Building in Terraria is a lot more of a hassle since you’re only left with two 2d planes, which limits what interesting structuring you can use and you often just get to the point where you have to fill walls with combinations of different wall types to make some interesting pattern. In Minecraft, you can introduce actual depth instead of flat walls.
@@SilverMere20 I think you are missing the point of Minecraft and its “hidden” progression system that’s infinitely bigger, more creative and more complex. Terraria is about its carefully constructed game progression that the developers have created to guide the player through their entire playthrough. In contrast, take the way a technical Minecraft player plays the game. They create different farms to create more resources, which allows them to create other farms and machines that also allows them to automate more aspects of the game. An iron golem farm can give you a steady supply of iron, which you can use to create a super smelter. But you need some kind of fuel source to your super smelter, so you build a slime farm to create flying machines in a bamboo farm, which in turn functions as a fuel source. Your super smelter now gives you access to smelt large quantities of items and thereby giving you access to all kinds of new things, etc. and that is just one way to go about a technical player’s game progression, there are countless of other ways to play Minecraft because of its open sandbox environment.
1:52 Very true. As someone who grew up on minecraft, I had a friend accidentally buy a “windows edition” of Minecraft or something like that back in the day and because of that, he wasn’t able to play with us 🤣🤣
Don't forget the lore. Terraria has a much better world structure, whole Minecraft has a potential to be even better, yet it's not even as good as Terraria pre 1.3. It's hard for me to admit, as I've spent half of my childhood playing Minecraft, put Terraria is indeed a better game and sivce I've matured, I realized Minecraft is almost impossible to play alone. I still love it, but it's just too empty. Even the mods seem just random, there are no directions and no path when you play with mods, everything is just random
Terraria is a game that reached its true potential and then kept expanding this potential even more Minecraft doesn't try to reach its potential but expands anyway
@@viniciusgoulart5077 Minecraft has already reached its potential by being the best sandbox one could’ve ever created. The only thing left is to just expand on the base game, the same way Terraria has expanded on its basic game progression.
Minecraft in my opinion lost much of its charm when it was bought my microsoft. Originally the game was made with the idea to have a game that you can just pick up and play, having virtually no restrictions (other than those in the game). It let you play the game your own way, and have fun with the community focused on its creative aspects. With that said, minecraft was meant to be a sandbox oriented game, but because of microsoft, not only did the core programming of blocks change, making it more difficult to load into worlds, but they added so many other additions to the game that feels like a cry for help to make the game as fun as it used to be.
It really didn't lose any of it's charm though really. The core programming of blocks didn't change and it is not more difficult to load into worlds, it really doesn't feel like a cry for help as the game is still as fun as it used to be actually it is arguably more fun then it used to be.
@@Jdudec367 I beg to differ. Although I'm not entirely sure about the coding itself, I've heard rumours from data miners that blocks are now rendered as 6-figure panels rather than one solid 3D figure. My personal "evidence" of this is that I could run minecraft smooth as butter on most PCs, but now even on my relatively strong PC I have to deal with longer loading time and even when it loads, it's severely laggy to play properly. Like, understand that minecraft with added shaders need some of the more better and expensive graphics cards, to the point where minecraft with shaders outclasses 95% of any high quality game in terms of graphics, and the other 5% just include data bombs. If you find it more fun, that's your own opinion, but I think it's fair to say that minecraft officially lost its charm when we have to vote for a new mob every half a year or so.
@@lazarmarkovic8382I don't think that the rendering change you heard of is the reason why Minecraft doesn't run as well now. A solid 3d model for every block can mean that blocks could have 5 sides not viewable, whereas 6 panels lets those potential 5 panels be unrendered. I think the main changes were due to the increase of world height along with Minecraft just not being the most well put together game.
All you have said is so true, I wish minecraft would actually care about the playerbase. They state of the game currently is not that surprising considering what Microsoft has done to other games they bought. They always try to squeeze out more and more money, releasing dumb spinoff games, neglecting the main game and eventually killing the franchise as a whole. It is taking a lot longer to destroy minecraft's reputation because it's so popular, but they'll eventually pull it off...
You can see how much the developers love to make Terraria and add cool things, the creator is even adding a dinossaur mount because his son said that it would be cool. Then there is minecraft, they just do dumb updates because they fear that if they do something different people may get angry
It seems stupid until you realize that people will get angry at new features considering the fact that there is now a good portion of people playing the alpha versions
Except terraria is at the end already. The final major update is out and none will come after. Just remember how it started to really fall out of cultural relevancy years after 1.3. With no 1.5 to save 1.4, the game is bound to become more niche and somewhat irrelevant to the masses
Im sure models for terraria are probably easier, but you still need some level of skill with pixel art for minecraft

Terraria devs continue to do this, constantly replying to tweets and suggestions with something amounting to "Ok. Sounds cool. We'll add it." It's why we're getting new secret seeds, weapon types, diversity, journey mode, built-in goddamn SKYBLOCK to the next update.

The answer is simple:
The video maker likes Terraria more than Minecraft
One of the devs at Mojang was basically responding to all of this with “Minecraft is a game about expression and that’s what these updates are about”
People wish Minecraft had more ambition, more bosses, more dimensions, more progression and things to do that aren’t limited by their own creativity, but Mojang wants to move in the exact opposite direction it seems
Minecraft **kinda** cares about the communities voice, Terraria delayed 1.4.4 repeatedly to add more community ideas, they genuinely care while Minecraft pretends to care
@@doginpillows20 I usually see this argument as "Minecraft doesn't have content, because the point is to not have content."
Like, how would adding content to the game stop you from enjoying it if you already enjoy it without content?
Like, wow, Mojang, you added a whole 2 (two) new mobs to the game after that much time? Thanks, that will completely change the way I play Minecraft now. Anything more and it would've "bloated the game", lol
Sometimes it feels like Minecraft is on life support, and these sparse updates are just enough to give the impression that it's still "being developed"
Personally, I don't think that improving the game with more variety is "bloating" it.
In Terraria, everywhere you look, there is a new thing: a new NPC, a new block, a new biome, a new enemy, a new weapon type, a new trinket, a new event, a new mount... It's like a Kaleidoscope of content. And whenever you think you've reached the "end" of what it had to give, it comes around with more stuff.
Hell, even the world itself changes significantly as you play. Terraria's finite world seems infinitely more alive than Minecraft actual infinite world.
@@hectic1830 Minecraft isn't on life support at all, it's still played a lot and more then Terraria really. Also not all of these updates are sparse and it IS still being developed.

The amount of times I came back to Terraria and replayed it is uncountable. I've bought the game almost a decade ago and got about 600-700 hours in it. And almost none of those hours were wasted on main title, but playing and enjoying it. Defeating the wall of flesh, getting the rod of discord, listening to wacky jungle rock while beating a freaking plant, then defeating a moon god is unmatched and every time feels like the first. It's truly an amazing game that makes you feel, you'll get angry when a Wyvern spawns out of nowhere just because you got a block too high while fighting a boss, or you'll feel like you've just finished a shift at work when farming for said rod of discord and immense joy when you finally get to clap Moon Lord cheeks and idiot drops an item you've wanted on the first attempt. @@Delta_Edits.2000 h player here. Have you tried doing other classes? I used to play mage a lot, played it on release of every major update (5+ times) and got bored a bit.

But, for peoples who still miss this game and likes his ost, Re logic has added a seed that also called "Drunk Seed" that you get 2 different corruption biomes, more big trees, and etc, but most importantly, the Soundtracks from Terraria Overworld as default.
They literally canceled it for a "it wasn't good enough" reason. Not money, but love for community. Literally how can you not love this game back??

It's a ballsy claim to say Terraria 'didn't make a sequel' while not mentioning the kerfuffle with the two cancelled sequels. Seems a bit like stretching the truth to fit the narrative or a lack of research.
Well the point is, the sequels were never released. I definitely should have mentioned them in that point, but a lot of work that went into those was completely scrapped without them making any money. I don't think the fact that they considered, and even put a good amount of resources into a sequel, has any effect on the game as it never hit the market for one reason or another.
Mmm I don't know about that last part, a lot of old features of minecraft are pretty wonky
This is why I dont like Terraria. If the devs love the game so much but want to change it, they should make a sequel. A new game to change the mechanics but keep the original energy, you know.

It's just stupidly expensive. Only kids in kinda rich families used to play Minecraft in PC legally, kids who have good PC, Xbox and/or Playstation 4, because then their parents would agree to spend this much into a game that has less content than its level of price use to offer.
the only hard platform to do it on is PC. you shouldn't have a PC if your not smart enough to read the instructions on screen.

And the only time they add it is at the April fool's apdate

Yes!!! Finally someone who understands that both games are masterpieces stop comparing them!

+ Minecraft lags EVEN when you play singleplayer altough thats mainly a bedrock edition thing, but it's soo annoying
Its coded on java infact im surprised how clunky it is heck even bedrock edition is laggy and its coded on a pretty fast language
Nothing.
Umm no?
You can also just progress in the game normally without doing all of the stuff you mention.
Its a sandbox, you can do whatever u want
@@alvaro1379He’s making a point, you just refuse to listen. Terraria has a generally better « journey to the top » system, with how many weapons, ores, and materials are locked behind specific events and bosses, whilst minecraft has a very simple process which can be, for some people, boring

the minecraft devs also push way too many restrictions onto their creativity.
The furniture one isn’t as bad but it’s still not fantastic, even despite the many workarounds, some people may find that what they had in mind is simply impossible or at least overly difficult to pull off and discourage them from trying similar things.
Minecraft
-Has a bunch of unnecessary sequel games
-Has mob votes that players hate
-Barely cares about the community
Terraria
-Doesnt have unnecessary sequel games
-Adds stuff that players want
-Cares about the community a lot
terraria also has functional game progression
One thing you totally should have mentioned was the progression system; not just the amount of content, but the ways in which it's used. It's why I got bored of Minecraft so quickly, yet have over 2,000 hours in Terraria.
I remember seeing this a long time ago, and tought you were just a silly hater. But seeing this video got me curious, and i ended up buying the game.
That was the best desition of my life.
I really want to thank you for making this video, because of it I staryed playing terraria, and enjoyed it as nobosy did...
I'm glad you're enjoying it!
7:42 an amount of satisfaction that nothing in minecraft can compare to
no way inspectre the dude in daily chat like 5 years ago (i am GenesiS792)
That is true, that glorious shiny thing from above!
You know, I wanted to say as a joke that Minecraft had more potions, but then I looked it up and terraria has infinity more potions
That was a lucky friend group, because we all know what calamity players are capable of
I’d easily agree with all your points, but I do wish terraria had a better tutorial system for beginners. Every time I play I’ve got like 10 wiki pages open cuz I have no idea what things are lol
Yeah that's true
while i do understand this point, i don't really see how they would implement it into the game without taking away from the overall feel of it.
@@ericwollam5532 Fair points
I suppose, last time I played though, Minecraft isn’t any better in that aspect (then again it matters less what you do in Minecraft, since it’s all up to you)
yeah minecraft has that kind of tutorial, because its so famous. You can just watch a video and bam you can beat the game. This is also why Terraria has so many items, classes etc. To give different experiences each time. While minecraft is really straight forward and you can beat it in 10 minutes
Finally someone is fairly comparing these games
imo, a better wording for your title would be "How Terraria is a near perfect 2D sandbox (and why Minecraft will never be for 3D).
Because the big difference between Minecraft and Terraria is the 2D/3D. This means Terraria can't replace Minecraft, yet the latter has a lot to learn from his 2D rival.
But Terraria isn't liked for its sandbox part
@@smtandearthboundsuck8400 oh true, my com was kinda bullshit
My first impression of the title was "no way terraria is better then minecraft" but these are some realy fricking good arguments

None is better than the other, both are amazing in their own ways. And they are so different that it is completely based on the player and what they want from a game.
some of the points were valid but the stuff in relation to the mods, the building and the player creativity are completely backwards
The fact that terraria and Minecraft are compared so often despite the only similarity being that they are both sandbox both games is crazy.
Well they are both games about mining and exploring. How many games do you know that are about those two things specifically that aren't just Minecraft clones? 😂

@@Jymboslicx Name five that aren't like Minecraft 😂
@@8is I agree thatMinecraft building is better, but the overall gameplay, progression in terraria is miles better than Minecraft
Terraria is a game that reached its true potential and then kept expanding this potential even more
Minecraft doesn't try to reach its potential but expands anyway
even terraraia has better mods
@@bigpuff69Well…
@@bigpuff69 oh no somebody has a bad taste here? Terraria has an amazing lore and great progression, no go throw up as much as you like
@@viniciusgoulart5077 Minecraft has already reached its potential by being the best sandbox one could’ve ever created.
Notch left too, I miss when Minecraft wasn’t some bought out project
@@lazarmarkovic8382But yeah it did really lose its charm.
Minecraft updates: lets add 1 mob!
Terraria updates: New weather, new weapons, new creatures.

Same. Imagine paying to host a server as well. Terraria? Nah man, it comes with it.

@@zenphir9051 Minecraft's biggest mistake was evolving sideways
