    I smile when you pronounce the word "denim" it is precious. English is one of your many languages. You are a talented inspiration even for me at nearly 75.

      Yes, her pronunciation of the word “denim” brought me joy as well. I guess we can say it brings joy across decades since you mentioned your age and I’m in my early 20s. Cheers to us!

      It's so rare to hear the phonetic "I" as an "e" sound in the US and wonderful to hear it represented here. I learned that pronunciation in some European languages like German and French and even from an Iraqi woman who was explaining how to pronounce the name of her country but hearing it online again in Jamila's video was a pleasant reminder of how the internet and English language can bring us to so many international perspectives and experiences!

    • @ilariamasullo3353
      @ilariamasullo3353 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The letter I sounds like "ее" in most languages, English is actually the exception 😅 Plus, the word "denim" comes from "de Nîmes" - pronounced approximately as "day-nEEm" - with Nîmes being the town in Southern France where such fabric was originally manufactured

    Wow, that tip on quality and stiffness/thickness of a shirt fabric really makes the difference between having a shirt that serves you when you work vs. working to make a shirt work (and possibly not even throughout the day if it's so wrinkle prone). Now I get why people talk about investing in certain pieces can be so crucial. Thank you Jamila, for all of your thoughtfully explained guidance and continuing work!

    I choose to live a stylish life, and dress appropriately. But suddenly something happened that got me thinking.
    I work for a big tech company, as an engineer. This job comes with a very high income. And I dress accordingly. But recently my boss told me I am overdressed for the job and that is why maybe people could find it insulting. I asked if there is a dress code and he said- no. And these are his exact words:“ there is no official dress code but you should blend in with your colleagues. People come here often in t-Shirts which they wore 6 days in a row. So when they see you dressed elegantly, that could bother them“
    I was shocked! I should blend in with people who do not shower for 6 days?! I am not coming in T-Shirt and jeans to work. I am 34 and refuse to dress like a teenager. Dress code was different before pandemic but now, people really got relaxed. I do not want to follow.
    But again, that got me thinking, do I insult people by coming in shirt and pants, business dress, nice heeled shoes, with Make-up…?

    • @TSD0416
      @TSD0416 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      In a word, yes. I had the same problem when I was working in an IT company before the pandemic. I would dress up in a professional way and wore office attire and my coworkers complained that I was overdressing. And the complaints were insulting at times. You see when you work in a male dominating industry and you excel, the jealous coworkers will find a way to block your progress and possible promotion. My advice is to dress in a clean, professional way, wear neutral colours and try to stay under the radar. There’s no need to stir the pot.

      It’s not you that are too dressed up, it’s your colleagues being slobs! I wear what I love, not what others wear. They’re saying there’s complete freedom for people to go as casual as they want, but not for us to wear better clothes, how is that “freedom in dress”?

    I love Theory, too. But, my favorite clothes are in silk knit/jersey (I have hyper-sensitive skin) and I recently discovered that MM la Fleur silk knits are higher quality - thicker and have fully-fashioned (knitted-in) seams, not cut and sewn ones, which are inferior. I also got a woven silk skirt from la Fleur, and am very happy with the quality and thickness of that silk fabric, too. (No brand affiliation).

      In the post-Soviet countries most people speak English, French, German, as well as Russian, very fluently. Hence our pronunciation tends to be quite accurate and close to the authentic way.

    Jamila!! I want to thank you for this great content! I've been studying this capsule wardrobe method for a while now and sorting out the pieces that should be part of it. My selection is similar to yours. However, everyone has their own lifestyle and their own selection and organizing this takes time.
    But like I said, I loved your selection, it's similar to what I've been studying and applying to my style. I also love Theory's pieces, they are very timeless!

    Hello. It would have been nice to see other neutral colors that are also basics: tans, creams, white, gray. Black isn't the only basic color. I don't really think the oversized denim shirts are basics for everyone. Different shoe options would have been nice, also.

    Hey Jamila! I love all your content. I was just curious if you have ever thought about writing a book about woman’s dress rules for today’s modern ladies. I would totally buy it if you decide too! A topic that is common sense for some, but is a little tough for me as a topic of pairing, casual and formal dresses in the winter with tights and shoes. I don’t like always feeling like I have to pair darker colors with black shoes in winter and stuck with black shoes to go with all my winter skirts etc.. That is something I’m really hoping to get some More understanding on. And would love if you wrote a book that had this topic or even covered this topic in a video:)

    Unless it's a modern trendy piece, personally I do not associate black color with elegance, it's The Help color. One of my colleagues wears a lot of black tailored / timeless pieces in the office, she looks like a salesperson. I do wear little back dresses in the evening though.

  • @barbarab3159
    @barbarab3159 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just what we needed, Jamila! Thank you so much:=) One question: I see you wear navy and black together. I've seen style advice out there saying they shouldn't be worn together. Same for black and brown. So according to etiquette, is there actually anything wrong with that, or is wearing these colours together just a matter of taste and shouldn't be frowned upon?

    • @yulismith77
      @yulismith77 ปีที่แล้ว

      I`m not an expert, but I think these colors combinations do not compliment each other. That`s why they are usually not worn together. Just by looking at them doesn`t give you a good feeling about the outfit, black/navy, black/brown looks odd. Black is very bold color itself, it needs lighter or brighter contrasting colors to make it as not so dark and overpowering. But by adding to it even more darker colors gives it just one depressing look.

    • @pearinsomnia9188
      @pearinsomnia9188 ปีที่แล้ว

      Navy is blue, it's just a dark shade. There's no issue pairing it with black, treat it like a color. Grey and brown, however, shouldn't be paired with black because they're alternatives to black (grey is softer and brown is warmer) to make your wardrobe suitable for your complexion.

    • @rosethorn0232
      @rosethorn0232 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've heard the reason this is a "style rule" is because navy and dark brown are too close to the color black, so you'll end up looking very monochrome...but, wearing one color head to toe is also considered very stylish so that idea makes no sense.
      If you think about it people wear black and navy all the time, the navy item is just in the form of jeans, and this looks really good together. I suggest not putting any stock in some of these old style "rules" that no one can ever explain, like no white after labor day. Whatever meaning they had has been lost and really doesn't apply to us in the current day. IMO both black/navy and black/brown look really good together, they are all considered neutral colors so naturally they pair well together.
