absolutely agree with this! i have been obsessed with hair , skincare and general body care since young as I have (almost) ezcema skin type and always struggleto feel comfortable in my skin but once i made it a piority in my teens... I've always found that's the key to feeling good and then feeling sexy, put together even without makeup. it's not the clothes, or makeup but the glow you have within you

#2 is so important! I use this in order to declutter. If something is a "meh" item, I force myself to wear it. If i don't feel good in it this day I know why I don't reach for it and can finally let go. In theory, I liked many of my clothes but not when I actually wore them. In reverse, the best indicator for a piece to keep is when I forget what I'm wearing because I don't constantly fidget or check myself in the garment.

I feel like I’ve collected many pieces that I don’t actually love and was just for the utility or because it was on trend, but now I realise I don’t feel good wearing them but also I think they’re useful and help me not to “waste” my special/expensive items, what would u recommend?

I once took on a bet from a colleague who challenged me to wear a different outfit to work (I was a teacher back then) for an entire year. I have a reasonably sized wardrobe and probably could do a good old cull now and again so I took up the challenge and I did it. Even if it was different shoes or a different cardigan or jacket ... it's worth thinking about and I realised that I was able to wear everything in my wardrobe without buying anything new ...

I’ve been documenting my daily outfits as best I can for the past few years and it has helped me so much! Even if no one ever sees them it’s a way for me to express my creativity. Also it really helps fortify me against falling for influencer trends 😂 I can appreciate a cute outfit on someone and realize that it is not really something that lines up with my outfit formulas over the years. I found this out the hard way when I tried to dress like “Parisian style” which was totally not me!! I am more of a bohemian girl. I’m not French Chic, I’m more Preppy Bohemian type.

I have been quietly binging your channel this week and it's given me such focus at a much needed time. I'm not on a low buy or no buy year, but I am on a buy better adventure. I never thought I'd be the type of person that would feel stuck in a style rut but recently I've realised how many items there are in my wardrobe that I keep wearing just because I own them, not because I feel good in them. And how many other items I don't wear because they were a one hit wonder and it's time to let them go.
I'm tired of buying things in a fit of shoppers excitement and then not getting the wear out of them because I didn't remember the fabric of that blouse makes me cold, or that t-shirt sleeve is too clingy and makes me self conscious, or the style of that jacket is too formal for my lifestyle. I want to buy with more intention than excitement this year, and your tips and tricks across so many videos, not just this one, have been invaluable!

    • @bzrbuzzy
      @bzrbuzzy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

As a buy nothing person, this resonates. Ive been feeling the need to Marie Kondo my clothes and get rid of items that don't spark joy. I accumulate so many random pieces w no intention because my options are whatever people are giving that fits me hahaha...truly we don't need many clothes but I have begun holding on to too many items bc they're free and they fit. Time to be more intentional as you say. I really think less is more woth clothes. As she says, we wear our main items within a couple weeks usually. What's the rest doing there? I need to take a critical tour of my closet this weekend. Confort really is number one though. I have zero hesitation getting rid of anything that makes me feel mentally or physically uncomfortable. I am thinking of a silk dress i kept bc it's got decent color and it's silk. However, i don't love the pattern and i dont have a dark slip for it. I felt nude all day and i don't like it enough to go through the trouble of buying a slip. A rough feeling fabric for a tank top i had intended to sleep in...nope. those two otems are easy discards.

So much yes to this. I've always stayed away from polyester, but have recently begun volunteering in a local charity thrift shop. Now I find attractive, well-made and good-fitting (and in good shape and well-priced!) polyester items quite often. I have to remind myself, "If you get this, you won't wear it. You'll get too hot." This was a great video. I wish I had watched something like this several years ago. I’ve always loved the “boho” “California girl” look on others and I spent a lot of money on pieces in those styles before I just had to admit it didn’t look right on me. I’ve recently discovered that a classic, clean lines type of outfit with maybe a small twist on it is what makes me look and feel my best. I learned about style journaling from another TH-camr and have been writing down my outfits in a physical journal with notes about what I love, like or dislike and what about the outfit or how I look in it makes me feel that way so I can avoid recreating the outfits I feel “meh” in and go straight for the ones I feel great in. Now I spend less time and money trying to look like someone else I admire and am more choosy and buy higher quality items of the ones I know will look and feel good on me.17:51

Documenting my wardrobe has been a game changer. I have been uploading everything I buy and wear into a wardrobe planner app and I pass my time creating new outfits and saving them for inspiration. It became crystal clear what I was not wearing and made a massive declutter that much easier. It's also important to differentiate between items you love on others and the things that work for you. For example, I love long flowy and frilly romantic dresses, but they don't work for me. At all. My style is minimal/classic, edgy and effortless. I need all of these characteristics in my outfits to feel good in it. Flowy dresses do not fit these style words.

Very helpful process to describe, I have thought about documenting those odd favourite styles....but because they are not consistent and per season, I don't think of it as a relevant/useful thing to do...and that I'm still in limbo between something and something. I think I've also been stuck in a mind set, to focus on what I don't like...and actually...when most of your wardrobe feels awkward on you. It just makes you feel lost, because you're not driven by positives. But I should really celebrate and pay attention to the occasional positive outfit days - and pair it with Pinterest, strategically. It makes sense to invite more positive choice and movement towards what I actually want!
Also, you have a very useful perspective of dressing that awkward part of you first...for me... I'm also petite! ..and in a way, thank god! It's so so much more common to get petite options in things like trousers now!! But it can still mean the shops are full of pitfalls and things you see are lovely by design, but just too long and sit weird. I imagine it's similar for taller gals too. We feel awkward in a 'standard' world or you incidentally benefit from a brand's take on standard 😅

So important to raise this point.

I am petite and pear-shaped, and I have wide feet. It is so important to start with the hardest to fit area, including trouser/jean length and sleeve length. If it's too tight or too long, you're going to fidget with it all day. For me it was also helpful to decide once and for all that I am a cardigan girlie. No matter how many blazers and faux leather jackets I like and try to wear, I'm gonna be more comfortable in a cardigan. Also, if you can track your outfits in an app that shows you which items you wear most often, you may find you've already chosen some of your best wardrobe staples.

I really enjoyed this video and found the tips very helpful. I am looking forward to implement them to pin down my style uniforms. My life is very versatile when it comes to outfits as I am in the office 2-3 times a week with a very strict dress code and the rest I work from home. I own a dog which puts other demands on my clothes. I also have a great interest in looking good and love a retro inspired look.
Thank you for a well researched video!

I used to do this when I had a job 😩. I’ve been a sahm for 8 years now. Between each baby I am able to get to my ideal weight but in the I between I feel so frumpy. My youngest is 6 months and I am in a rut. This inspired me to get back to it.

I always have trouble with documenting my style honestly because when I know I'm going to take a picture, I put in nore effort than I normally would. There's also the phenomenon where if it's my day off and I put in more effort for my ootd photo, like putting on my dress because the outfit isn't technically complete without it, I tend to undo some of that effort as soon as the photo has been taken, like taking the dress back off because I don't need it until 3 PM.
9:54 I'm a bottom hourglass (36 bust, 29 waist, 39 hip), but I'm also transmasculine. I enjoy feminine fashion as much as the next boy, and I love highlighting my trim waist, but I don't want to accentuate the size of my bust, because it's a big dysphoria trigger for me, and it's difficult to have one without the other. The disparity between my hips and waist should, logically, be the hardest part to dress, and it _can_ be difficult to find rtw pieces that fit comfortably through that whole area, but I will always have more difficulty with the top half.
I was raised super-fundamentalist Christian, and tight clothing still really chafes against my sense of modesty, as does clothing that shows a lot of skin.
My usual style uniform is: straight-leg jeans (+ belt) + below-knee skirt + t-shirt + flannel + ponytail + crew socks + tennis shoes. Sometimes, I wear a dress instead of a skirt + t-shirt, but I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that the dresses that mask my bust swallow my waist, and the dresses that accentuate my waist draw attention to my bust, so skirts feel better.

I know decluttering made me have not enough clothes. Having the right amount of clothes is important. Feeling liberated didnt mean go around nearly naked. Remember, most used clothing is cheap or free. Just dont steal or just take from people if wasnt intended. There is plenty of clothing and fabric made to keep creating. Dont follow videos that dont know the size of your closet space.

This is a great idea! However, it seems one may need different uniforms for different times of year. For instance, I love wearing sweater dresses or a knit skirt w/sweater with boots when it’s colder, but that doesn’t translate to spring/summer, as I want to cover my legs, and leather boots are not conducive to the time of year.

when you started talking about uniform outfits without doing it the Steve Jobs way I immediately was thinking about Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce in vampire diaries. They both have a color palette and its basically jeans and casual top both with a different take. Elena is more of wide leg jeans , converse and hanley long sleaves with lace camis most of the time. Katherine is more oriented toward lace camis and a little leather jacket with skinny jeans and high health boots. Elena as a more fall ish color palette. Katherine gravitates more towards black since her shoes and coats are often those color. Her make up is more of a dark smooky eye where Elena has more of brown natural make up. Elena wears more shorts necklace with small pendant where Katherine often has a longer chain and a slightly bigger pendant. They are both player by the same actress but because of those uniforms types of outfit and Nina’s acting skills you can easily tell who is who.

Hello Katie, I just discovered your channel and it is very informative, this video in particular. I'm 41 yo, home office worker (as a Spanish teacher, living in Argentina) and I struggle a lot with weather when it comes to put together and outfit... I see so many cute outfits for winter but on my mind is .... I'm gonna be cold if I wear this. So is very hard for me to put and outfit together. Also I gravitate more to the comfort side of my wardrobe: joggers and a hoodie, that would be my style uniform right now. Also I feel very lost when I've to shop...here in Argentina clothes are very low quality and very expensive, so I do prefer to shop on thrift stores. Anyway I'm rumbling here. Thank you, this video was a hit. New subscriber here ❤

Great content! I find myself wearing and pinning a lot of straight leg pants or jeans with a crew tee and either a crew neck sweater or blazer. I accessorize with scarves a lot in my hair and on my neck. I buy other shape pants but always find myself going back to straight. Also been loving my barrel leg for a little more edgy look. Same uniform tho

Great video Katie, must have been fun to make too :) I def agree with adressing your most challenging feature first. For me it's large bust combined with narrow shoulders (most challenging) then large waist to hip ratio (10" difference, second most challenging). Watching this video made me realize I have my own style formula's too without really knowing it.

Perhaps consider a video on all types of bras. I myself am 4'10" and when I lost a lot of weight, my bust shrank and dropped. Now, I can't find a comfortable or flattering bra. There isn't enough fat on my chest to pad an underwire, and it is like torture on the rib cage. Sports bras are OK, but then they come up too high and show under a blouse.

    3. Pinterest for inspiration
    4. Outfits that work on your body type
    5. Realistic outfits for your lifestyle (elevate basic tee and jeans with accessories or cardigan)
    6. Start with the hardest part first (top half for me)
    7. Know when to experiment
    8. Figure out what you don't like
    9. Comfort and practicality
    10. Don't neglect accessories

    Hi Katy,
    Great content.
I've got to work around having short legs and an aversion to heels, which is my most limiting thing. I also feel that pointy flats are cute on other people, but they're just not me.
I'm good with sandals in summer and flat ankle boots in winter and I go from there.
Btw, I'm an older woman but I still wear jeans and casual things a lot. Skirts disguise short legs, and I wear them more lately. It's good to keep evolving.
