Even expensive scents can smell common. Baccarat Rouge 540 is an example. Careful when you buy, price isn't always a good indicator.

Honestly, I don't think it smells common, the problem is that it's been the most cloned fragrance in the last 3-5 years and this fact puts the typical BR540 DNA in this spot, but it's not a common DNA at all.

I personally use whatever my mom or grandmothers used. They were smells that I knew all my life so it’s comforting. I still have my mom and grandmother(on my dad’s side) but my other grandmother passed away. I know that might be weird to most ladies but it’s all a comfort thing. The strongest one I have is twilight woods. Others are Chanel.

Clean clothes are also VERY important. The high-efficiency washing machines that are being practically forced on us these days do not use enough water to properly get laundry clean. That is, if you use the normal cycles.
Fabrics also hold on to body odor, synthetic fabrics being worse than natural.
They make additives that you can mix with your detergent and rinse agents that will help remove the residual sweat smells, etc... from your laundry

Piggy backing off this thought also your home affects the way you smell. Having a range that has a hood vent that actually vents outside when your cooking (which a lot don't) if yours doesn't open a window when cooking and use oil screens over your pans when cooking with oils, cleaning under you hood vents and the filters which can have a rancid oil smell stuck to them. Having carpets in your house smell stick more to all textiles old unclean area rugs, dusty curtains smell stick to them. an old couch you don't clean, an old mattress, pillows you can't wash etc. old grout and sealants in your shower and around your toilet can hold molds and smell, and anyway you can keep dust down affects the air quality and smell of a house. an old house or house with moisture problems tend to have more smells. using air purifiers and dehumidifiers to help balance the moisture level in your home. point being these contribute to how you smell the smell of your house sticks to you no matter what perfume your wearing

Get a Speed Queen Washer and Dryer. You will be able to press the “Deep Fill” water level on every load. Use 1/2 cup of borax along with your favorite laundry detergent. Put about a splash of vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser. Your clothes will be amazingly clean and fresh. Always dry your clothes throughly. Mold and mildew do not smell good. Use your dryer.

You don't have to go to Paris to "smell" high-end. Be clean, be kind, iron your clothes, sleep well, and don't overdo it on the garlic. The classiest woman I ever knew didn't even wear or buy perfume. She said it was covering up. She used a nice essential oil first thing in the morning, and rinsed her face with rose water. I think it's about taste, not spending.

I'm so glad Anna mentioned the point about body chemistry. I smelled a perfume on a coworker one time that was so beautiful I just had to try it. But sadly, on me it smelled like vinegar even though my hygiene is insanely meticulous. Body chemistry and hormones are real, and they can really affect how a perfume will smell on you. I've had to test many different perfumes over the years before finally finding a few gems that really work well on me that I love. ❤

Yes-- being clean from head to toe is extremely important. However, I’m surprised that Anna is pushing expensive fragrances. Some very expensive fragrances can smell common and even give headaches. Using and learning about pairing body oils with fragrances can change a fragrance and make it your own. You don’t have to spend expensive to smell expensive.

To be budget friendly, I'd recommended using regular hair/body care products (unless you have a skin condition that needs special products) and only splurging on one pefume you really love. NEVER blind buy a perfume, get a sample and spray it on yourself so you know how it "develops" on your skin throughout the day. I also recommend getting a scent that is a nice everyday fragrance that can be worn in any season of the year
Taking a daily shower and using anti perspirant works fine for most ppl

While I fully agree, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with what you are saying- it is sound advice for someone trying to stay frugal. The focus on what Anna is sharing is solely on the aura/smell and how to wholly achieve that.
Me personally, i use unscented body care products since I work in the medical field. The exceptions are my antiperspirant and my hair products. I do buy high end hair products, but because my hair is very long and I do not want to lose my length by using cheap & damaging drug store products. I add in perfume for date night or a girls’ outing when I don’t have to be so careful about triggering someone’s allergic reactions or migraines.

I tried niche perfumes but could never pick one i like, they all are too complicated with so many "notes" opening up when you wear them on skin, sometime the smell changes in a few minutes, it was so confusing that i decided i'd rather be a mainstream girlie instead with my givenchys, versaches and VS body sprays 🤗 Realizing i don't have to catch up with all that trending "niche perfume" madness and i can stick with old faves made me happier and more confident.

I recently went to an expensive department store in Germany and found all these niche, but very popular perfumes, like Jo Malone, Byredo, MFK, Tom Ford, Amouage etc. I tried a whole bunch of them and didn't like most to even put on my skin! on top of that some of these brands are now probably even more popular than the usual luxury brands. and I have watched enough perfume content to know that most of the times the difference comes from branding and packaging, not the contents of the bottle itself. Like you, I also prefer more linear and monotonous scents instead of the ones that smell completely differently 30 second, 30 minutes and 3 hours after I applied them

I always look for the feeling of freshness and cleanliness and surprisingly, some fragrances make me feel the opposite.

The irony of our great state is that there are lots of very wealthy people who are sitting on lots of land and you would never know they are multi millionaires. Here's my ten cents: Kevin Murphy shampoo and other hair products are amazing in performance and smell. They are expensive but total game changers for me. As mentioned below, what you wash your clothes with also matters; there are high end laundry products as well as some mainstream ones that smell "elevated." Think about what your deoderant smells like, too; some deoderants are overwhelming. To add to Anna's comments about common or mainstream perfumes, I'd describe many of these perfumes as smelling very sugary (Ariana Grande's Cloud smells like a toasted marshmallow to me), like a Jolly Rancher candy, or very harshly, overpoweringly floral (like the perfume composition is not balanced). Some also have a strong synthetic fruity smell, like a banana body spray or somesuch. Also, affluent people in general (in my part of the US at least) do not smoke cigarettes, and as we all know, cigarette smoke clings to you and doesn't smell good.

@@saharkhursheed8261 i think it has to do with the choice and quality of ingredients and if the amounts they make are small and not widely available. It can also be unique combination of scents, or that it is a small family business, everything done by hand, long history and tradition… I kinda imagine it as a cool high end local restaurant that not many people know about, compared to McDonalds 😄.
As for the scent profiles, I don’t feel (from personal smelling 😊) that anything too strong, or very sweet is not really classy, but that the “clean” smells are the goal. If there is spice, floral, citrucy smell, it should be a hint. But that’s all very difficult to say because a smell depends on the skin of the person wearing it. PH of the skin is very important, have moisturized skin is also very important, etc. An old perfumer once told me to always try a scent on my skin and then smell it throughout the day for as long as it lasts, and if I like it, go back to the store the next day and buy it. The smell changes with time, and also your skin and the quality of perfume affect how long a smell stays on you.

I think it does depend on the person. There are many smaller brands - go to a high end store and smell them all. As an example, what I do is look a lesser known brand that uses good ingredients - knowing what good ingredients are can take some work - eg for rose you want rose absolute or Bulgarian rose. I used to wear Jo Malone Vetiver (now discontinued) until she sold the company to Estée Lauder. Now she has started another brand called Jo Loves which is less well known and there are some good fragrances in that range - I now use vetiver from Jo Loves. But also I stopped someone in the supermarket whose scent smelled amazing. It was Santal 33 by Los Labo. It is insanely expensive but you can buy a 10ml bottle so I wear that on special occasions and ALWAYS get compliments.

Nowadays any fragrance that used to be considered exclusive, can become mainstream. Think of Chanel No 5 or Baccarat Rouge. They're not made with special ingredients anymore either because of mass consumerism. I had a very elegant, classy relative who was always put together, I couldn't really detect one specific thing, she always wore ironed, tailored clothes (she took all her clothes to the tailor's, even the really inexpensive ones, to have them fitted perfectly to her body), she used the same body and haircare all the time (mostly non-scented creams or the kind that didn't have a "chocolate" or "christmas cookie" or "strawberry" smell, they had that typical clean cream scent) and she focused on skincare over makeup, haircare over hair dye so she'd always look clean and healthy. And she wore a fresh, a bit creamy fragrance, not too heavy, spicy or resembling any fruit or food.

Indeed smell is so important! My tip: wear no synthetic and hang your clothing nighttime outside and they smell fresh. Use a good deo, tong scraper, wash yourself every time with water after using the bathroom/toilet. I use already years the brand Keune for my hair. It's bit exspensive but you need very very little and really does wonders. Nice video Mrs Bey.

I love Designer perfumes but i pick my own. My nose makes the choice. I always have 4 or 5 different ones to cycle around plus body lotion/shower gel to layer the scent. People always say i smell lovely. They usually can't afford to copy me. I invest in the right perfumes that not every second person has.

Hi Anna, thanks for this video. I personally use 2 parfumes that a lot of people have been complimented on and I never told them what I was wearing. They are from Zara in collaboration with Jo Malone and they are Elegantly Tokio and Enerheticaly New York. They smell expensive, citrusy and leather.

I do still wear like "mainstream" type perfumes, just avoiding the most cheap and cliche types. I don't have a specific perfume that is my signature, but I do have a type of perfume that I feel is very me. Although I'm not sure about the right lingo. But basically it's "heavy" floral scents, with some musky and woodsy undertones. I seem to be drawn to many perfumes with viol in them. Also for haircare I use professional shampoo and conditioner, as well as more pricy skincare products for my face, but regular drugstore body soap. Don't wanna wash too much money literally down the drain lol.
I do get a lot of compliments for how I smell (I shower daily and often use just 2 or 3 sprays of perfume) so I take that as a good sign. I'm unsure if I smell expensive though, probably more mid tier. Perhaps more elevated than the average woman, but unlikely anything like an actually rich woman. And I'm fine with that, since my aim is more so to be classy than giving the impression of having way more money than I actually do.

I was mostly wearing mainstream perfumes until I discovered the “Merchant Of Venice” brand while on vacation in Istanbul.
I was in the department store actually looking to purchase a handbag when a gentleman who was working there recommended to spray me with the “La Fenice” fragrance.
Don’t know how to best describe this but this was the most beautiful scent i had ever smelled while at the same time it was “me”.
As Anna said you will understand when you find YOUR perfume!

Interestingly, studies show that men tend to prefer vanilla scents on women. Also highly rated are other things we associate with comfort foods (i.e. cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.).
In my experience, vanilla is far and away the scent that has always elicited the most positive reactions from men.

I really enjoyed this video because you are suggesting that people go and find their own signature perfume. I remember watching a video of yours in the past where you were recommending certain perfumes and stating that other perfumes smelled bad and I remember thinking "well, that's very subjective" because it is, what you like might not be what I like.
I have a perfume that was gifted to me as a wedding present from someone very close to me 14 years ago and the bottle is still only half-way through, but I consider that to be my signature smell now and it's not even a high end perfume, it's Victoria's Secret, but I love how it smells, one of my favourite scents. Unfortunately and fortunately it's been discontinued. Unfortunately because I can't buy it anymore, so I am planning on keeping at least a bit of it as a keepsake, but I'm also glad that it feels unique now and no one else has it.

I have noticed that a scent that you wear may smell different on someone else. Also I am very sensitive to scents, so I stay with mostly fresh scents. Giorgio Armani has some very nice fresh scents that I can wear. Some of Dolce are good for me also. Heavy scents, although lovely, give me migraines. I think it’s all about what works for you, and you like.

    1. it also matters what you eat - the body emits smells of processing the food you eat... your body, your hair, your breath have a whiff of smell of what your body have been processing, no matter they have been washed... 2. how about your laundry detergent? it smells just enough to have that slight sent of fresh.3. They smell like peace and security. They do not stress. Pheromones of content. 4. Perfumes usually have chemicals added to them for "spreading" the smell. NOT healthy and not good for anything or anyone. I wear citrusy flavors, and particularly one that is sort of ecco - just perfume, no chemicals. Divine, light, fresh, uplifting, unassuming. 5. Wear natural fibers. They do not retain any previous wear smells. 6. but not last - there are garment sprays that people spray in their wardrobes. they can be very subtle, delicate and elegant. Once you spray your garments with them and you have taken shower, you do not have to wear perfume! I have my favorite one and always get compliments on how I smell even I have not used perfume... Just a hint.

I totally agree about not overloading your body with scent. I'll never forget an experience I had last year at a grocery store. There was a man stalking items throughout one of the sections and his cologne was so strong I could literally smell everywhere he had been. It lingered in the aisles long after he had left them. To me, when people wear a lot of perfume I either assume they have become so accustomed to their perfume that they are "nose blind" and might want to rotate in another scent, or that they are covering up body odor. Neither one is great. Like Anna, I'm fairly sensitive to some perfumes. Back in the day when Calvin Klein obsession perfume was all the rage it was awful because some component of it gives me a terrible headache! Even the knockoffs that were floating around at that time would give me the same closed up throat and horrible headache. I think we always need to be mindful when we wear perfume out in a public place where you're going to have assigned seats. An airplane, at a concert or symphony. If you've doused yourself in perfume and someone next to you either doesn't like your perfume or is allergic to it, they are stuck sitting next to you for the entirety of the performance. One Christmas we were at the symphony and two people near me were wearing such strong cologne I felt myself having an allergic reaction and having trouble breathing. I had to ask an usher to move me to an open seat when there was an intermission. It's always something good to remember when you're going to be in one place for a long time. I'd say use a lighter hand with your perfume choice on those occasions. I'm very intrigued by certain perfumes and I think I will take Anna's advice and visit a nice store to see if I can find a nice, signature sent that won't give me headaches. ❤️

You are the one alone with it and smelling it. If you love the fragrance (no matter the cost) and it makes you feel confident, sexy, professional, fresh etc. then wear it. Please yourself first! Please your mate second. Everyone else is last ( unless the fragrance is truly offensive).
