  • They say never start the show with a showstopper, but that's precisely how it's going this week as we finally get Ninja Gaiden onto the list. Also, uh, Jurassic Park, Casino Kid... Treasure Master? Wario's Woods, hey! Weird week. It still smells bad in here, let's rank some games!

TGL and Kickle Cubicle were the games that came bundled with my NES back in the days (instead of Mario and Duck Hunt) and I still love and re-play both of them nowdays.
TGL is one of the main reasons why Shmups is one of my favorite genre.
"TGL" is also the password if you want to play only the shmups levels in the game.

As a kid drawing ninjas in the 80s, that single lit cheek of Ryu's in cut scenes was a huge influence. The cut scenes in general might be the first non-robot-y anime I was exposed to back then. The music also got me started recording game audio (you know, via the vcr to your stereo's tape deck.)

The best part about Ninja Gaiden's checkpoint system is that for whatever reason the final boss throws it all out the window. You lost all your lives on 4-4 the boss stage, and started at 4-3. You die or lose your lives on 6-3 you start on 6-3. You die even a single time against any of the three final bosses you start at 6-1. They apparently knew about the bug, but decided to keep it as a feature.

19:44 is largely why I love Ninja Gaiden. Few games on the NES were quite so satisfying in how swiftly you dispatch enemies compounded with that sound and visual. Even breaking open containers is satisfying. It just gets so many little effects right.

A couple thoughts after watching this:
1:06:50 For all the things wrong with Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout, I was impressed it had a 3D spinning pause indicator.
The music in Casino Kid during the matches was headache inducing, but that shuffle(?) sound effect was even worse. It sounded like a bug flapping its wings and was really unnerving.
Treasure Master going out on an adventure with his neon green biking cap, perpetually dopey smile, cocky strut and machine gun-like shin kicks had me grinning like an idiot the whole time he was on screen.

I first played Wario's Woods inside of the GameCube Animal Crossing. Sometime after Tetris released, I started thinking it would be cool to have a puzzle game in which you played as a little dude within the play-field, and sure enough, I wound up digging the hell out of Wario's Woods. You're 100% right about it. It has some stuff, but it has a learning curve, and getting used to Toad's inertia is part of that. Pretty much everyone I've shown it to reacted the way you did: they respected it, but couldn't get into it.

I got weirdly addicted to Wario's Woods on Nintendo Switch online after playing the VS with a friend. There's a lot to that game mechanically which keeps it interesting, and it's even better playing head-to-head. The SNES version has a VS CPU mode that makes the game feel more substantial, but the NES version is still great. The 2 player mode has a great soundtrack too.

Glad to see Ninja Gaiden get respectable placement. It might be my favorite NES game ever. Killer music. Amazing intro cutscene. Perfect controls. It's great. Also, kind of neat how well the Xbox-and-beyond games captured the spirit of the NES games' "never stop moving forward" design philosophy, when you think about it.
Bugs' Birthday Blowout is a game that I owned and played a ton of, because that's what you did with the games that you had, quality be damned, and I am absolutely stunned by how much of that game was unrecognizable to me. I don't remember shit about it, like some sort of self defense mechanism.

Ninja Gaiden is a great game that is straight up unfair at times. I didn't think "Is it better or worse than Castlevania 1?" would be a tough question, but I spent a couple of minutes sitting back thinking about that myself. They are similar games as they are different if that makes any sense.
As for the rest, Bugs deserved a better birthday, Casino Kid has potential but requires a more time and patience to dig into, and it's a shame that Treasure Master isn't as cool as your character's walk is, but Wario's Woods seems very interesting and Jurassic Park should have been ranked higher, in my opinion. I never got past the first level as a kid, but I always remembered the music and it makes me want to play the rest of it now that I've seen what happens after you open the gate.
Good stuff, Gerstmann. Onto Episode 30! Hopefully the GameScent smell cleared out by then, LOL.

Casino Kid makes more sense when you realize it's not a Casino game but an RPG based in a Casino. It's not a JRPG style layout, it's an actual JRPG. It's very much like the World Court Tennis RPG mode. The battles are Casino games and you have to win and the point is to work your way up to the big game and win it. That said, if you don't like video game BJ/Poker as a main gameplay mechanic, you'll hate it.

So soft drink ownership is surprisingly loose between Canada and the US; Dr Pepper is a fun one to look up as both Coke AND Pepsi sell the damn thing depending on where you live for example.
But for what it's worth Pepsi has been the owner/distributer of Rockstar in Canada for the last decade at least. It's who I buy the stuff from anyhoo. They also bought Guru and seem to have buyers remorse about it. It's a real racket.
So maybe that's a new thing where Jeff lives but hey, on the upside it might become a lot easier to get the stuff in the future as a result. The stuff is ubiquitous wherever Pepsi products are sold up here.

Ninja Gaiden (NES) came out in 1988. Ninja Gaiden (XBOX) in 2004. DOA in 1996 and Ryu was in the roster even then.
I'm pretty sure the only reason NG was rebooted was the popularity of DOA, and they started putting the ninja girls into the NG games. None of the franchises really reference each-other at all except for the major ninja characters, so I would say they are two different storylines. Like the MCU, but if Iron Man were the only movies before and after the Avengers. The first games has quite a lot of ties but they became less relevant with each game. But it's not like any of the games are known for their stories.

I'm a Dr. Mario hater but I've played many, many hours of Wario's Woods and I think it's really immeasurably better. It's not the most intuitive thing in the world and it has a rougher difficulty curve than most puzzle games, but once you know the moves there are many ways to quickly dispatch of vast amounts of guys, and multiplayer on a high difficulty level is really intense and exciting. There's also a lot of depth in that there are varieties of guys that can only be destroyed under special conditions that you can select if you need even more of a challenge. Most of the games that Jeff plays can be judged somewhat fairly in the time he allots for them, but in this case I genuinely believe it could have jumped 50 spots, easily, if he played it for another hour. After playing the lessons he pretty much went straight back to not using any of the techniques he was taught; I guess it just takes a bit of time getting comfortable with them. The SNES version is slightly easier since you have more buttons and don't have to use the D-pad to kick. It also features a voice acted middle-aged-sounding Toad yelling "Yowza!"

Why does nobody talk about piracy linked to the layoffs

I'd say it's more because of Fortnite and mobile

Do you see any correlation at all there? It seems Nintendo is hit the hardest by piracy, as their systems have been open to emulation for many years (and they claim a million people had pirated the newest Zelda before it had even released), but they're not laying a lot of people of at the moment.

The rest of the Looney Tunes gang really had no reason to be jealous of Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout. I remember playing this game when I was a kid and I didn't like it much back then.

I just saw that Jeff considers Orange Dreamsicle his 4th (so far) best energy drink. This makes me wonder how much sweetness Jeff likes into his Energy drinks, because Orange Dreamsicle is cloying as shit, and the worst Reign I tried. Melon Mania and Mango Matic are pretty good. Lemon HDZ is middling, but Orange Dreamsicle is horrible. In Brazil there are no other Reign flavors available, but it is a good brand, overall

Wait, couldn't you climb on the walls in Ninja Gaiden? So you didn't have to jump back and forth to go up.

Bugs Bunny Birthday Bash is more competent than some of the worst games on the list but I'd argue it's one of the most offensive games on this list from a standpoint of how mad you'd be if you paid full price for it at the time. You can squint at Circus Caper and think maybe the sort of person who would make this sort of game might actually enjoy playing it for a little while. BBBB is cynical trash, chunks of level and assets are clearly stolen from somewhere, and the level and variance of the slowdown turns both the platforming and combat into something that has to be worked around, not mastered. It Stinks!
