One thing I really appreciate about this is that as a kid, some of these titles were not very good. As an adult, they’re still not very good. That’s the power of science.

I'm actually a little nervous for the Mario 3 episode. 3 and Yoshi's Island are both games in the franchise Jeff has repeatedly said he doesn"t like. Half as a bit, but also partly for real. I think Mario 3 might be the best game on the system so I"m praying for Science to win over spicy takes.

Mario 2 was my actual introduction to Mario because my house was a SEGA Master System house, so by the time I got a hand-me down NES, it was a year before the SNES came out, and Mario 2 was one of the games we got with it. Long story short, Mario 2 is my canonical Mario

Luigi can skip whole chunks of levels and Peach can straight up fly. But hey, Toads real job is to hurry up carry the Princesses bags anyways so I guess he's got it where he needs it :p

He could have gotten hit many more times then that and gotten just as far without losing a single additional life. Take those hits. It's fine. It's not exactly a hard game, hyper efficiency is redundant. Dude had like 22 extra lives at one point. This is the problem with the idea of Toads abilities being at all special. They're just minmaxing abilities. You want Toad to get his flower? Fine. "Mathematically" Toad is the most "efficient" if you're specifically speedrunning. Yay. This is why Toads abilities are bad. It's like being able to jump 10 feet in the air when the highest just is five feet high. There's no benefit. Unless you're trying to shave fractions of a second off "a run" then being able to do universal actions slightly better then a character who can still do all the same things is an irrelevant ability. And I'm sorry but people doing "a run" are a tiny minority and not what the game was designed around. That's kind of the beauty of speed running but it also doesn't make the character with the easiest clips the best character. To most people Toad and Mario are both vanilla characters with no special abilities to speak of. They play the same. No wait; Toad has a worse jump. And unlike speed jumping does kind of matter.
I think the most fascinating thing is that Doki Doki Panic was this super ambitious licensed game based on a TV show to begin with. Imagine if they had never needed to make it SMB2. It either would never have left Japan or they would have just put some other random characters in it, like J.J. & Jeff on the Turbografx16. Like imagine Doki Doki Panic became The Adventures of Dave, Jon, Linda and Ken and still became this huge hit, and the actual SMB2 was a flop as NOA feared, and instead we'd now have TADJLK as Nintendo's main franchise.
It wasn't just a TV show, it was a festival and a whole ton of other stuff. It was amazingly huge. There's a great video about it here on TH-cam somewhere.
You should have played as Mario for a good portion of this. The reason it feels loose and floaty to play like you mentioned, is because you're playing as Peach.
feedback: these older games peak really high with their sound effects, so much so that it hurts my ears. Unfortunately they are so loud that turning them low means barely hearing jeff at all. do you have a way of making those sound effects less piercing and sharp at the top end?
i've never seen this story screen in super mario bros 2 before :o . i've played through the entire super nintendo version like twice (also only playing as the princess every single level), but somehow it never occurred to me to let it sit still on the title screen i guess?
Krion Conquest was the ultimate magazine-era Mega Man clone for me. Never played it myself but all the memories of those articles are coming back to me. Seems like the actual game needed a little more polish.
I was too dumb back in the day to know that SMB2 was a reskin of Doki Doki Panic, therefore SMB2 was my SMB2 and I love it. With that said, real players use Toad as your their main and Mario as their alt. Playing as Peach/Luigi is an affront to the purity of science.
I only owned five NES games as a kid, and two of them were NES Play Action Football and SMB2. I played that football game so much, I won 96-0 against the computer. Onside kicks to Ronnie Lott all day long.
I definitely think about how weird Mario 2 is all the time. I eagerly traded Cybernoid to a classmate to get it only to be immediately baffled that _this_ was somehow the sequel to Super Mario Bros. Stepping on an enemy didn't kill it, and I played for about 10 minutes without knowing I could pull up vegetables. Once figured it out, I came to enjoy it, but man, it made quite the first impression on me.
I swear, when my parents bought me and my siblings a NES for Christmas, the system came with an advert for Nintendo Power magazine and on that advert there was a screenshot for the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2. The screenshot featured a poison mushroom. It was the NES 'action set' with the red version of the zapper. But then 'Mario Madness' Mario 2 came out, with its' weird dream setting. But I never questioned the change up from SMB1. SMB1 was already kinda weird to begin with, as it has a storybook-like setting with magic beanstalks and rescuing a princess from a dragon/ lizard. But then Mario 3 came out after that, and it initially felt like Mario 3 was a step backwards from SMB2, with the lack of characters to choose from and a nerfed pick-up and throw mechanic. Nobody knew about Doki-Doki Panic, outside of Nintendo.
I was really hoping to hear how the combo carts stacked up compared to the individual games! I think that would throw a really interesting twist on the list
What people miss with the DokiDoki thing, trying to dismiss SMB2 for some reason, is that it was always a Mario game prototype. It took too long for this tidbit to be confirmed so the idea that SMB2 is some kind of spriteswap took hold.
yea that's the thing. But it's a small contrived detail so I think people just default to the thing that seems more natural to them. Like I knew that already, but now that you mentioned it, I remembered it for a fact.

I've come to realize over time that SMB2 is my favorite, and therefore the best, 2D Mario. I think part of that is that I don't really like straight platformers. You know. Like Mario games. Sure SMB1 holds a special place in my heart but Mario 2 just ticks so many more of the boxes that are found in all my favorite games. The play variety in multiple characters. The slower pace. The super large explorable levels full of secrets and paths. Even just having a "combat system" divorced from the movement and platforming systems. Real bosses. I think Mario 2 can sort of be looked at as if Mario was starting down the same path as games like Zelda and Metroid. Meanwhile Mario 3 and World, while to various degrees having some of these elements, are still very much focused on being straightforward platformers. I know this might seem crazy to some but I'd love to see a return to Dreamland as a metroidvania using Mario 2 mechanics as the core. It's just so easy to envision this game with it's levels all interconnected, letting you walk back and forth from world to world. The stages always had such a greater sense of place to me then the more "obstacle course" levels in other Mario games. If nothing else do a little throwback game. A new Mario 2 style platformer where you get to throw turnips at fools. Call it Doki Doki 2 for all I care, I don't need the branding even.
I don’t remember that 3rd level in DK Jr at all. Doesn’t even slightly look familiar. I had forgotten about level 4 but seeing it, I recall it now. I only played this on Colecovision. Maybe that version didn’t have this level 3?
32:00 BASED. Super Mario Bros. 2 is a fantastic game. If SMB3 wasn't my favorite Mario game, SMB2 would probably be the next one in line. Funny thing is, when you say you like SMB2 better than SMB3 because it's more interesting, that's exactly why Zelda II is my favorite Legend of Zelda. Donkey Kong Jr. is a banger too and Bucky 'O Hare seems fun with GREAT music, but as for Not Mega Man starring Francesca the Witch...not so much. I agree with the sentiment of there's something there and it has protentional, but from what I can see, ol' Vic Tokai kind of fumbled the ball when it came to execution. A shame. NES Play Action Football I had access to as a kid, but it didn't click with me as much as Tecmo Bowl did. Tecmo Super Bowl just completely outshined all other football games on the platform and had the NFL and NFLPA licenses to boot. Good stuff as always. Onto #32!

That football game has a great game boy port. I would play the crap out of it before bed every night. Has all the same sound effects looks pretty much like this maybe more ant like.
The isometric view is gone from the Game Boy port, which is top down. Pass plays and kicks switch temporarily to a zoomed out "map" view, so you can see where the ball can travel. I pretty much mastered the Game Boy port, but never grasped the NES and SNES ports. THe NES game I actually played for the first time, on real hardware, a few years ago, but never completed a single pass. I think Play Action is about throwing to a "spot" on the field, where your receiver is supposed to be. Your receiver is supposed to run to a ball in the air. Tecmo Bowl games makes that easier by throwing to a target that automatically adjusts to the ball in mid-air (usually).
While I can agree that Donkey Kong is a better game than Donkey Kong Jr., I cannot also agree that the NES port of Donkey Kong is better than the NES port of Donkey Kong Jr. DK is missing an entire level, while Jr. is whole and complete. Scientifically, I think Jr. should beat his dad for that alone. Now, I am not a scientist, but I think this whole list needs to be peer reviewed.
Love Mario 2. Prefer it to 3. It didn't begin as a Mario but it was Miyamoto, Kondo et al and was very influential on all Mario games after it. 2 feels like a playground or a toy box, you can mess about so much. 3 is linear levels with a time limit, much less open ended, far too many levels, and irritatingly difficult in many places. In my opinion
Mario 3 is a true sequel to SMB in that sense. It's a timed obstacle course, which a few deviations from the path. SMB2USA is very much a reskin of a game that isn't as much of an obstacle course.
Loved Mario 2 as a kid, then sort of couldn't stand it, then came around again and appreciate the hell out of it. The reasoning for Mario 3 being "bad" is kind of nuts. It's the sequel to one of the best 8-bit Nintendo games according to science, and it's better in every way.
His rose colored glasses for Mario 2 and yet bashing Mario 3 is kinda wild to me. Mario 3 is maybe my number one on the whole platform. It's so tight, so engaging and complex and just amazing. Still can't believe he put MB2 at 5, it's soooo not that good of a game in my opinion. Shouldnt even be in the top 20 I wouldn't think.

Toad runs the fastest and picks up/digs the fastest, which is why speedrunners use him. Mario is the worst character. Being able to float is cool, but Princess is OP since she can avoid most of the platforming, it just makes an already easy game, REALLY easy. But also a lot of instances where you got hit picking stuff up wouldn't have happened with Toad. lol Edit: And then you mentioned it.
US version Mario 2 never should have gotten the flak that it has but hearing "you know why Mario 3 is bad?" makes me not want to watch the rest of this episode or the episode which Mario 3 will appear in. My brain is actually melting I cant believe that.
Mario 2 is the Mario game I have gone back to MOST in my life lol It's awesome and better then Mario 1. Complains that you fight Birdo all the time (Even though there are more bosses thrown in) but Mario 1 only has the one same fight. This series was not supposed to take 'era' into consideration and just rank them based on what the games are.
Back on Episode 1 I said I couldn’t wait until he hit Bucky O’Hare and he did not disappoint! 🎉he should, at some point, check out the endgame beyond those four planets, though. It’s a heck of a design showcase. Center of the Magma Tanker rules, etc. …funny that it comes across as British when it’s the future Treasure devs. Agreed on the generous continues. The drums in those cave sections of smb2 are actually kind of insane; they feel like they’re of a much higher quality than what the nes should be able to do, almost like something you’d hear coming from the snes
I got Zelda 2 with my NES, and Super Mario Bros 2 was my first Mario. I didn't get Zelda & Mario 1 until later, in a bargain bin. So I have the most nostalgia for the games in the series that get the least love and fanservice haha
Maybe it changes later in the game, but I think my problem with The Krion Conquest is the whole witch angle seems at odds with the holy-shit-that-sure-is-Mega-Man future aesthetic of the level art and enemies. I think it would've been cooler (and maybe a point to help differentiate it more) if it was still a Mega-Man rip off, but it committed to a fantasy theme the whole way through.
The tech v magic angle sort of works, conceptually. But I don't disagree that Krion feels like a Mega Man world, with a witch character thrown into it, as a "rebel".
The front cover of The Krion Conquest box is extremely unappealing and doesn't really show what the game is about. It's some airbrushed picture of a 1930s looking wizard of oz style good witch/fairy godmother and some tiny enemies in a Neverending Story reject poster. So continuing the Megaman theme of having bad western cover art.

I know this might seem crazy to some but I'd love to see a return to Dreamland as a metroidvania using Mario 2 mechanics as the core.
It's just so easy to envision this game with it's levels all interconnected, letting you walk back and forth from world to world. The stages always had such a greater sense of place to me then the more "obstacle course" levels in other Mario games.
If nothing else do a little throwback game. A new Mario 2 style platformer where you get to throw turnips at fools. Call it Doki Doki 2 for all I care, I don't need the branding even.
I don’t remember that 3rd level in DK Jr at all. Doesn’t even slightly look familiar. I had forgotten about level 4 but seeing it, I recall it now. I only played this on Colecovision. Maybe that version didn’t have this level 3?

Super Mario Bros. 2 is a fantastic game. If SMB3 wasn't my favorite Mario game, SMB2 would probably be the next one in line. Funny thing is, when you say you like SMB2 better than SMB3 because it's more interesting, that's exactly why Zelda II is my favorite Legend of Zelda.
Donkey Kong Jr. is a banger too and Bucky 'O Hare seems fun with GREAT music, but as for Not Mega Man starring Francesca the Witch...not so much. I agree with the sentiment of there's something there and it has protentional, but from what I can see, ol' Vic Tokai kind of fumbled the ball when it came to execution. A shame.
NES Play Action Football I had access to as a kid, but it didn't click with me as much as Tecmo Bowl did. Tecmo Super Bowl just completely outshined all other football games on the platform and had the NFL and NFLPA licenses to boot.

That football game has a great game boy port. I would play the crap out of it before bed every night. Has all the same sound effects looks pretty much like this maybe more ant like.
The isometric view is gone from the Game Boy port, which is top down. Pass plays and kicks switch temporarily to a zoomed out "map" view, so you can see where the ball can travel.
I pretty much mastered the Game Boy port, but never grasped the NES and SNES ports. THe NES game I actually played for the first time, on real hardware, a few years ago, but never completed a single pass.
I think Play Action is about throwing to a "spot" on the field, where your receiver is supposed to be. Your receiver is supposed to run to a ball in the air. Tecmo Bowl games makes that easier by throwing to a target that automatically adjusts to the ball in mid-air (usually).

Action 52 might be a Crazy Creatures Situation. If the games weren't individually released, then maybe Action 52 qualifies.
While I can agree that Donkey Kong is a better game than Donkey Kong Jr., I cannot also agree that the NES port of Donkey Kong is better than the NES port of Donkey Kong Jr. DK is missing an entire level, while Jr. is whole and complete. Scientifically, I think Jr. should beat his dad for that alone. Now, I am not a scientist, but I think this whole list needs to be peer reviewed.
Love Mario 2. Prefer it to 3. It didn't begin as a Mario but it was Miyamoto, Kondo et al and was very influential on all Mario games after it.
2 feels like a playground or a toy box, you can mess about so much. 3 is linear levels with a time limit, much less open ended, far too many levels, and irritatingly difficult in many places.

Mario 3 is a true sequel to SMB in that sense. It's a timed obstacle course, which a few deviations from the path.
SMB2USA is very much a reskin of a game that isn't as much of an obstacle course.
Loved Mario 2 as a kid, then sort of couldn't stand it, then came around again and appreciate the hell out of it.
The reasoning for Mario 3 being "bad" is kind of nuts. It's the sequel to one of the best 8-bit Nintendo games according to science, and it's better in every way.
His rose colored glasses for Mario 2 and yet bashing Mario 3 is kinda wild to me. Mario 3 is maybe my number one on the whole platform. It's so tight, so engaging and complex and just amazing.
Still can't believe he put MB2 at 5, it's soooo not that good of a game in my opinion. Shouldnt even be in the top 20 I wouldn't think.

Toad runs the fastest and picks up/digs the fastest, which is why speedrunners use him. Mario is the worst character. Being able to float is cool, but Princess is OP since she can avoid most of the platforming, it just makes an already easy game, REALLY easy. But also a lot of instances where you got hit picking stuff up wouldn't have happened with Toad. lol

US version Mario 2 never should have gotten the flak that it has but hearing "you know why Mario 3 is bad?" makes me not want to watch the rest of this episode or the episode which Mario 3 will appear in. My brain is actually melting I cant believe that.
I’ve never been a huge fan of the Mario series. But SMB2 is different enough to be one of my favorite games for the platform.

…funny that it comes across as British when it’s the future Treasure devs. Agreed on the generous continues. They may make you not care about losing a life, but as a kid, it was a killer intro to tough games with a safety net of sorts to help out.

Smb3 is the most overrated game on the NES. Smb2 is the most underrated game on the NES.
The drums in those cave sections of smb2 are actually kind of insane; they feel like they’re of a much higher quality than what the nes should be able to do, almost like something you’d hear coming from the snes
I got Zelda 2 with my NES, and Super Mario Bros 2 was my first Mario. I didn't get Zelda & Mario 1 until later, in a bargain bin. So I have the most nostalgia for the games in the series that get the least love and fanservice haha
Maybe it changes later in the game, but I think my problem with The Krion Conquest is the whole witch angle seems at odds with the holy-shit-that-sure-is-Mega-Man future aesthetic of the level art and enemies. I think it would've been cooler (and maybe a point to help differentiate it more) if it was still a Mega-Man rip off, but it committed to a fantasy theme the whole way through.
The tech v magic angle sort of works, conceptually. But I don't disagree that Krion feels like a Mega Man world, with a witch character thrown into it, as a "rebel".
The front cover of The Krion Conquest box is extremely unappealing and doesn't really show what the game is about. It's some airbrushed picture of a 1930s looking wizard of oz style good witch/fairy godmother and some tiny enemies in a Neverending Story reject poster. So continuing the Megaman theme of having bad western cover art.
