Really giving the games a thorough look instead of just playing for a few minutes and moving on is one of the things that's made this series so good, IMO.
@@KyleS.1987 totally. i'm glad he decided to give dragon warrior 1 an entire episode to itself. it actually inspired me to go and beat the fan translated super famicom remakes of dragon quest 1 and 2 :] my reviews btw: dragon quest 1 is pretty short, doesn't outstay its welcome, kind of like the Fallout 1 of japanese rpgs. there's something very pure about it, and the way the dungeon music changes as you go deeper was awesome. dragon quest 2 is kind of amazing in that most of the big features from later dragon quest games are already here :o . multi-character battles, the ship... of course, some of the stuff, they didn't quite nail on the first try and even the super famicom version doesn't fix the last part of the game which was apparently never tested for gameplay balance at all lol, and it shows. but i beat it anyway!
Watching the Enterprise crew getting constantly knocked down by inchworms and having to retreat back to the ship after all that cinematic build-up had me laughing hard.
Warning when you do "NFL" by LJN. The game doesn't list what plays you want to select in game. It requires you to have a physical "call sheet" that was included that as far as I know hasn't been scanned so that game might be impossible to play correctly. It's also not very good.
To get to Area 4 in Blaster Master you have to get full Hover (H), and go back to the very first screen of the game. Above your starting point there is a ledge, use your Hover to get up to that ledge. There are several ledges above the first one and you have to use Hover to get to each successive ledge. Be careful because some of the ledges have an enemy on them and there is extra Hover (H) along the way. To conserve Hover, jump first before engaging the Hover. When you get to the top there will be a hole to drive through and then you will have to go down a short ways and you'll see the entrance to Area 4. That wall you saw with the spikes 55:27 is the way to Area 8 (the final area of the game). To get there, you have to get Wall Drive and Ceiling Drive (I think they are called Wall 1, and Wall 2). Those will allow you to drive upside down so you can drive vertically up that wall so your car will fit between that wall and those spikes. Up in that area past those spikes is the entrance to Area 8. Blaster Master was a game that DEFINITELY should have had passwords or a battery save. Videogame logic: there just so happens to be a case of radioactive material in your backyard, as well as a hole that leads to a subterranian underworld and there is a car conveniently located at the bottom of the hole so you can explore said underworld, moreover, there is a flight suit you can wear in the underworld and it just so happens to fit you perfectly. LOL. And incidentally, EFF The Adventures of Bayou Billy.
The intro to Blaster Master hit me hard as a kid. I was so motivated to play and be a hero right until the point where my peabrain couldn’t handle the non-linearness.
Blaster Master is awesome! I got it for Christmas one year, and it was one of my favorites on the system. That last door you decided not to go through was where you needed to go. You have to literally go to the very first screen of the game next, and hover up several platforms up to level four.
Oh my, Master Blaster is just giving me a "This is just a different but probably better Festers Quest" vibe in so many ways. From the way it sounds, from the way the bullets hit the walls and have weird movement, also to how things upgrade. Crazy!
It’s really neat looking back on these and noticing all the commonalities in games from the same developers, like fonts, animations, sound effects, and UI elements. That sound that plays when the ball travels through the air in Double Dribble is the exact same sound that plays when using the codec in Metal Gear
Consider checking out the PC CD-ROM version of Star Trek 25th Anniversary: it's more or less a totally different game. Features the voices of the entire original cast.
1988 being the year Mario 3, Mega Man 2, NES Bionic Commando, and Blaster Master came out, makes it feel like the year games reached that 4th-gen 16-bit era of quality. like, the year the Famicom succeeded a full generation of design and concept from where it started
I loved Blaster Master as a kid. Blaster Master Zero is a great modern remake, though I really ought to play the other two BMZ games sometime. Edited to say that those games are on Steam too, no 3DS necessary.
Me too! There was a series of Nintendo 'worlds of power' books by F.X. Nine based on Mega Man, Castlevania, Metal Gear, Ninja Gaiden, Bionic Commando, Wizards & Warriors etc. At my school they had Blaster Master and Wizards & Warriors
Have to say, I was stoked when I saw double dribble in there. I've never been a sports game fan, but that game managed to make it a fuckin blast. The pacing, the ridiculous over the top opening/half time show and slam dunk cutscenes really set it apart and gave it an energy I couldn't help but get enthusiastic about.
That Star Trek thumbnail brought back memories that was the screenshot that was always shown and it made me think the game had to be good and like that the whole time
This is probably dumb to admit online, but until this video I had never seen Blaster Master and always thought it was an NES Zapper game based on the name, so I never even looked into it to see what a cool game it was. I would have loved to sprinkle this in between my sessions of Captain Skyhawk, Simon's Quest, Burai Fighter, and Metal Storm among many others as a kid.
BLASTER MASTER! I've never met a person that disliked that game, and I hope I never do. And when it got ranked, it went exactly where I thought it was going to go. Good stuff. Fun fact: The boss music that played during a couple of the boss battles is also present in the bonus word search game in another Sunsoft title: Freedom Force. My favorite light gun game next to Virtua Cop. As for the rest...yeah. Bomberman on the NES is hard to go back to, especially in an era where Super Bomberman R Online exists with online multiplayer. That Stark Trek game definitely made some choices, especially that soundtrack that might be charged as a war crime in some countries. Code Name: Viper seems cool, Double Dribble IS cool, and so is Paperboy. Like many others, that's the version of Paperboy I grew up with and the one I immediately picture in my mind when the name comes up. Even though it's technically inferior to the arcade version, I personally think it holds up well.
I faintly remember playing an old flash game, it was just a giant NES Bomberman map with up to 64 players. I'd mostly just blow myself up on mistake before encountering another player.
Jeff if you love the Bomberman music check out the Amiga version, it's called "Dyna Blaster" for some reason but it's much closer to the turbografx-16 version and the music sounds so much better. One of my all time fav retro game themes, it goes HARD :D
I still have the Worlds of Power Blaster Master book I got at a grade school book fair. It was fine, but it's very literal in its portrayal of the game at times. For example, there's a bit in which Jason gets missiles by driving into a holographic image of the pick-up. I didn't get the book because I was into the game, though. I got it because they didn't have the Mega Man 2 book. I think that whole story kinda encapsulates my opinion of Blaster Master.
Most classic Star Trek games from the 90’s were designed and worked on by fans for fans it seems. Incomprehensible and frustrating for anyone who didn’t understand the in-jokes and references.
I don’t know about the gameplay, but the graphics in Star Trek look pretty impressive for an NES game. At least they tried. Too bad Paperboy looks really bad compared to the awesome arcade game.
Weird bit of trivia: there's a "Blaster Master" novel. Officially licensed and everything. It's more mediocre than anything else, but it's weird that they used to just take weird swings like that.
"Star Trek 25th Anniversary" just looks like a couple of retirees wearing sandals and looking for their golf balls in the high grass at the local country club.
I've got an energy drink you should check out. Bucked Up Miami 300mg caf. You can't taste the caffeine at all. It's kinda like that Sonic drink, but good.
Blaster Master fascinated me as a kid, but I only beat it in my late 20s. Gonna second all the praise the Blaster Master Zero games are getting in the comments. I still have a preference for how little the original holds your hand, but Zero is a great modern execution.

Blaster Master- The reason there are many "dead end" buildings that have a couple gun upgrades is you can do them over and over to get your gun back. The music keeps being amazing, and you stopped short of the first REALLY cool boss. This is one of the flaws in the "science" you claim to be doing, games that just keep getting better but you don't see it. The Guardian Legend is another example of this, so please when you do finally get to it, give it an hour or more. The other flaw is you don't judge games replayability based on a second quest because you don't know if there is one. As far as "the game is huge" you saw about 35% of the world. It's one of the rare treasures I was lucky enough to get as a kid with a very limited budget. Why would you even think it's not better than punchout, a game that becomes an absolute CHORE to play after you've done so 5 times? Not science.

“We never seem to get through as many games as we should” he says while playing the first one for an hour. And I love every second!
science cant be rushed
Science was rushed in the first few episodes. A lot of those games got one attempt.

I mean, it IS an LJN game. :b

That knowing look at the camera after the "Bomberman? More like bummerman" got me 😂. I love this series, what a great idea.

Blaster Master Zero is everything great about Blaster Master and plays like you remember it, not bow it is and is more accessible in a lot of ways.
As if Fridays needed another reason to be amazing. I need Jeff saying "Dynowarz: The Destruction of Spondylus" as my ringtone.
It’s better than Master Chu and the Drunkard Hu, but it’s no Low G Man: The Low Gravity Man

Do Rad Racer!!!
blaster music thoooo
The graphics on Star Trek some of the best on the nes fkn ay.
Why does Code Name: Viper instantly make me think of Rolling Thunder? The mechanics and even animations are almost 1:1 (Jumping, dropping, shooting)
As is the case with many "rip-off" games from this era, it is almost identical because the director of Rolling Thunder worked on it.
🔥🔥🔥
The c64 Paperboy theme is better than the arcade paperboy theme, a hill i will die on.
The sounds in Blaster Master were some of the most tolerable so far. some of the NES games can get pretty grating but that one was pretty nice.
