Maniac Mansion for NES is top 5. Computer version doesn't even have music. Multiple ways to solve puzzles, multiple endings, easter eggs. Shit is goated.
That first Mega Man is a colossaly influential first draft with an enormous level of cruelty. It feels dangerous in a way the other games don't; I hesitate to call MM2 an overcorrection but it is practically trivial by comparison. Also, Shadow of the Ninja (Blue Shadow here in the EU) really comes into its own in coop. It's pretty wack as a single player game. It also has some of the best music on the NES I think.
Jeff Gerstmann is still the best, even if his opinion on Megaman X is UNCORRECT F'real though there are some things I question now as an adult videogamesmin. Like that you need to get the dash powerup from Ghost Dad in the ice penguin stage instead of them just giving it to you at the start of the game. I think they made the right move in later games when you just had it right away. It feels like a super important mechanic in the game to do without for long.
Back in the day I also thought that Megaman 4, 5, and 6 were just a Shenaniganza of art contest bosses and reused asset ideas. I went back to these as an adult rather than a dumb child who was just consumed with moving on to the SNES and they are honestly all great games. Also Megaman X is a classic the music alone is iconic, the rest of the X series gets wonky but the first one hold up beautifully.
3:05:00 Did I just hear Jeff make a disgusted grunt at Super Metroid? Whoa. Now, that's a take that I just cannot get behind at all. On another note, I subscribe to the theory that people love Mega Man 2 so much because the Metal Blades are horrifically overpowered.
I think the "Normal" mode being ridiculously easy went a long way to endearing itself to people. (It's, of course, still an excellent game in its original difficulty.)
Super metroid is pretty good and dripping with atmosphere but the main thing holding it back is how terrible the movement physics are. The popular Redux romhack fixes most of the movement issues and makes running and jumping much more satisfying and purposeful. Also the game is really easy. As an aside, Symphony of the Night is better in every single way.
Square waves man! Having 2 square waves in the NES sound chip instead of a saw wave was definitely an option. It limited the sound options but it accidentally defined the sound of a generation. I like it, simply because it "sounds videogamey" to me, and that's precisely because the NES had two square waves, not the other way around. I don't know if that is an opinion.
I feel you, about dreading being sick. I just got over a really bad cold that lasted only a few days luckily. My sister's kids are always bringing home a new illness from school, it's basically a revolving door in their household
Mega Man 1 is so good. There are better games in the series, but I’ve played the crap out of the first 5 and let me tell ya, it holds up. I love it. GREAT music.
Honestly I can understand why Maniac Mansion is far from a perfect version on NES. Yet it’s a crazy feat and given I only had a NES in my early years, it was one of my favorite games because it was so unique. But then again I also adored Shadowgate on NES, even though I never got far. EDIT: wow he really took Maniac Mansion out back and shoot it in the head. Comparable to other NES it’s pretty good and offers something most don’t. faulty science!
I never thought about it, but you're right. Most people played Mega Man 2 or 3 before 1, even back in the day, so it's pretty easy to fall into the trap of thinking it's a miserable time. The first Mega Man is indeed good actually! And there are indeed good Mega Mans after 3. Heck, Mega Man 4 is secretly the best of the NES series. It has a man made of skulls! SKULLS! (Side note: This video made me buy Palamedes. I'd never heard of it before, much less seen it at conventions, and I was shocked to see such a decent and seemingly uncommon NES game go for such a low price.)
You had me there with that Megaman bit till you brought up megaman soccer. Personally I like em all including the Xes (pre PS1 era anyway) but can appreciate why someone would prefer the more refined and simple take of the NES ones.
Not that I would ever argue with the Science™, but Shadow of the Ninja - or Blue Shadow, as it was called here in PAL land - is definitely a sort of cult gem with a fair few folks, mainly for its music, fast gameplay, the bosses (some later bosses go *hard*) and especially its 2-player co-op. In fact, it's getting a full remake on Steam next year: Shadow of the Ninja - Reborn.
In Palamedes, I'm not entirely sure why you have to cycle through the dice at all. Shouldn't you just be able to shoot them with a generic blob? You always have access to all the dice, so you can always get any currently exposed piece on the board... It doesn't really add a challenge, it mostly seems like it makes things clunky for no purpose. EDIT: you address this ignore me lol
I think a lot of people get stuck real bad on either Iceman or Elecman. Both fights are extremely hard to get through without pause scamming the bosses, even once you know what to do. I definitely have memories of returning this rental without beating it or caring to re-rent, but it's probably one of the better Megamans to enjoy as an adult... provided you abuse the pause glitch because f this game without it.
I totally feel you on getting sick. I seem to have a weaker immune system than my husband so I get probably 50% of whatever my 4 year old or 1 year old bring home. I can’t count how many times I’ve vomited in the last 12 months but one bout put me in the hospital for dehydration. I swear it doesn’t matter how well you wash your hands, that shit is gonna get you.
Damn it my cousin had Shadow of the Ninja on the Game Boy and we spent a whole summer playing it to death. I had Ninja Gaiden on the Game Gear and we both thought it to be the superior game (it had a sicker soundtrack, at least), but batteries didn't last the whole game so we ended up playing GB instead. Keep on doing what you do sir, you're doing God's work right here.
Those ice cubes in Megaman need every microsecond of your reaction speed. I can't play punch out as well without original hardware on crt, night and day difference.
That little smeagol like creature at 1:04:16 looks just like Igor from Castlevania. Had to double check to see if Shadow of the Ninja was a Konami title 😅
I feel like Jeff's disdain for 16-bit versions of games that added more lore and slicker gameplay to their 8-bit predecessors is one of those "fundamental differences" in how we view videogames.
I see there wasn't time for Dragon Warrior after all. 😝(EDIT: I wrote that while watching the Dig Dug 2 segment, thinking of the post Jeff made on Bluesky before going live; I hadn't gotten to the end where he talks about the time needed to tackle the larger JRPGs.)
JEFF! You say "Shadow Of The Ninja is no Rambo" twice while putting it right ABOVE Rambo! Is this an error, or do you mean for it to be below, rather than above Rambo? I'm not all the way through the vid yet, in case this gets caught later on. Just want to do my part in peer reviewing the science.
wasn't there some way to do some kind of screenwipe magic in shadow of the ninja? i seem to remember there being some kind of input that let you do magic or something, but, its been 30 years so idk
everyone else here is (rightfully) baffled by the Mega Man X opinions, but I came back here to figure out why the hell Gremlins 2 is ranked so low I feel like this has made me whatever the Nintendo Science version of an anti-vaxxer is
I don't care about any of the later ones but MM4 gets a bum rep. I know Pharaoh Man is stupid but there is also Skull Man DID YOU THINK ABOUT THAT? MM4 has some of the best level design in the series as well, IMO improving on 3. 3 gets... bad.
To kind of piggy back off of Jeffs convo about everyone Jumping to Megaman 2. It's true everyone loves to talk about how great it is yet hardly anyone ever talks about its numerous flaws. People like to forget how broken the metal blade is because of how useful it becomes but it really takes away from the careful balancing of weapons/robot masters that the series would improve upon. Let's not forget the boobeam boss from Wily 2 or 3 that you can get stuck on if you miss a single crashbomb shot. Is Megaman 2 a great? Yes! But it is not a perfect game. I personally believe MegaMan 9 took everything great about MegaMan 2 and improved it all tenfold
NES Pipedream was a super addictive game. I remember getting really good at it back in college. I really need to play that again. Shadow of the ninja was actually quite good too, and I'm looking forward to the fairly recently announced remake coming out next year.
Imagine you just finished 8 robot masters and you jump into a level and find another robot but it's an empty husk then you see air man being dropped in and you think "you're not even from this game". That's mega man 3. The science ™️ will prove it's superior.
I had the Game Boy version of MM1, now that's some bullshit. You only jump two blocks high and can barely clear most attacks, Elecman's attack is 3 blocks high in most places.
I won't say I like dumping on Mega Man 1 but, I will say I am not big on some of the level design, it's mainly just Gutsman's stage. It's not smooth with those platforms that drop you. There is a lot of good in MM1 just a bit rough. Even though it obviously has so much good that was carried on and being the birth of a great franchise. Also yeah I didn't think about it until you said "Role playing games" and I went oh yeah what the heck are you going to do about Final Fantasy and what not? A whole episode for one of those maybe 2 of those tops.?
jeff's reaction to mega man x is definitely not scientific, it would have made more sense as a follow-up to mega man 3 as a sort of sequel to the trilogy
Mega Man 1 is the one I played most. There's a simplicity to it that I always like to revisit. Also, Halo 5's great. The story was whatever but the gameplay was fantastic. Best multiplayer in the series. Warzone was amazing, after an hour you basically had endless cards to summon tanks and stuff. It plays better than Infinite, and the campaign isn't an aimless open world but a series of well-paced missions worth replaying. Like Mega Man 1, it gets a bum rap!
I'm with you on Mega Man 1. I replayed it recently and I loved it. 3rd best on the NES. I'm almost with you on mega man x. I still enjoyed it at the time mostly but anytime I go back to it I drop it and go back to 1, 2, or 3.
The tragedy of this video is Jeff turning off the kids cd players. Way to miss out on some of the best music on the NES. It invalidates the whole ranking! BTW, as someone who grew up on the c64 version, Jeff is wrong and the NES version is way better.
I played through the first 3 Mega Man games for the first time on the Wii Virtual Console. They all had their moments of bullshit, but I came away thinking that 1 was better than 3. If I were to replay them again, I would probably play 1 and 2 and skip 3, the low points of 3 are worse than anything in 1 imo.
Jeff's insane opinion about Mega Man X continues to be absolutely confounding. His hatred for seemingly "edgy" things blinding him to how great the gameplay and music are, is really immature. Confusingly so. I mean he can not like it, that's fine, but to be so hard headed against a game with near universal praise is odd.
I think he is conflating his memories of the later games, I imagine if he played the first game again he would come around on it. I understand thinking mega man x is overrated, but it’s still absolutely a solid game
Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylous is mentioned not a minute and a half into todays episode, proving once again that it is the ultimate mid NES game. I do wonder how you're going to cover all the RPGs on the system. Over a seventh of the way through the catalogue and not one RPG yet. I'd love to see an RPG heavy episode where you play maybe three back to back for a bit longer.
Wow. That c64 maniac mansion music was def not better imo. I think you didn’t give it a truly fair shake. What you know bias. And mega man x rules, and mega man 2 is my favorite nes game.
I'm now constantly asking myself when trying to decide the inherent value of something, if it's "better than
Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus?"
SPONDEELOOS
It's no Low G Man: The Low Gravity Man.
Maniac Mansion for NES is top 5. Computer version doesn't even have music. Multiple ways to solve puzzles, multiple endings, easter eggs. Shit is goated.
To me, Jeff seemed super unfair to it. And I haven't even played any version.
Mega Man 1 is fine. But I can't support this Mega Man X slander.
Choosing to rank the NES over the SNES to avoid having to played Yoshi's Island or MegaMan X is Jeff's power move
The truth hurts
It’s always been his most incorrect opinion
It's the BEST PLAYING one of the 2D Mega Man games!

I think they made the right move in later games when you just had it right away. It feels like a super important mechanic in the game to do without for long.
"Mega Man X sucked."
All that you need to know about Jeff's bizarre grumpy outlook on video games.
Dig Dug 2 is my jam.
Babysitter left her son's old systems out so I played that and kunio soccer a ton.
Jeff has said that he kind of resents Super Metroid for buying it and beating it the same day, if I recall
I think the "Normal" mode being ridiculously easy went a long way to endearing itself to people. (It's, of course, still an excellent game in its original difficulty.)
It's no Low G Man: The Low Gravity Man.
Super metroid is pretty good and dripping with atmosphere but the main thing holding it back is how terrible the movement physics are. The popular Redux romhack fixes most of the movement issues and makes running and jumping much more satisfying and purposeful. Also the game is really easy.

Jeff is even more sick than he suspects if he thinks the Maniac Mansion NES music is bad 😆
No kidding, I didn't look at the list of games and man...what a disservice. He didn't do that to any other game. Then again, Razor had the best tunes
He didn't even choose Michael who has the best music
He confidently played the c64 version like it slaps harder.
Mega Man X is on of the best games ever made. It's all the other ones after that which went extremely wrong.
I really enjoy your streams. You have interesting ideas about some of my favorite classics.
Wrong ideas. But interesting.
Imagine having the stones to think the PC version of Maniac Mansion has better music. That's definitely an opinion.
If he's talking the C64 version then he is factually correct
That is also an opinion.

Cutters cut electric wires, Jeff. CUTTERS CUT ELECTRIC WIRES.
I wondered if they cut bombman's fuses. My memory was fuzzy.
If only there was a Duder who would have played all NES Mega Mans to give us his opinion on this...
But is Dig Dug 2 better than Master Blu and the Drunkard Chu? Which is the hit sequel to Master Chu and the Drunkard Hu.
The difference between the first Mega Man and Mega Man X is that Mega Man X is actually fun
That mega man thing is a jumping Rorasch test. I always saw a big telephone on a pole
was my day better than dynowarz destruction of spondyl00s
You had me there with that Megaman bit till you brought up megaman soccer. Personally I like em all including the Xes (pre PS1 era anyway) but can appreciate why someone would prefer the more refined and simple take of the NES ones.
dude, preschool for my 2 year old has been 2 years of constant runny noses and coughs. they say it gets better but im not holding my breath!
Bro that C64 Maniac Mansion theme song sounds like ass in a can. Also Razor can microwave the hamster.
Gremlins 2 is one of the most insane sequels ever made, it's completely ridiculous in the best possible way, and you should definitely see it.
Mega Man X is one of the best games ever made. That might be the only thing that Jeff has been completely wrong about.
Not that I would ever argue with the Science™, but Shadow of the Ninja - or Blue Shadow, as it was called here in PAL land - is definitely a sort of cult gem with a fair few folks, mainly for its music, fast gameplay, the bosses (some later bosses go *hard*) and especially its 2-player co-op. shocking footage of jeff gerstmann implicitly admitting he never thought to remap the dash button to the right shoulder 47:10
GOT EM.
The Sexy Lady Gremlin better show up in Gremlins 2 or I’m taking this cart back to the store right now.
Dawg, I love R.C. Pro-Am but how in the world is that above Mega Man 1?
To this day I will never understand Jeff's disdan for Mega Man X, and I would pay good money to watch him stream it and give it an honest go
Am I the only one who thinks the big jumping things in Mega Man 1 look like telephones?
35:17 That Elec Man groove gets bumpin', and Jeff says aloud what everyone else is feeling: "Oh yeah.."
It was probably Back to the Future 3, it came out in May of '90 and Gremlins 2 in June.
Gremlins 2 (the movie) is a fever dream. Ya got to watch it.
I totally feel you on getting sick. I seem to have a weaker immune system than my husband so I get probably 50% of whatever my 4 year old or 1 year old bring home. I can’t count how many times I’ve vomited in the last 12 months but one bout put me in the hospital for dehydration. Shots fired about Mega Man X Jeff. I will let it slide because you know not what you say. I will pray for your soul daily. 😁
Mega Man X is a great game.
80s sesame street had guts, also a bunch of sprites in shadow of the ninja look like they're reworks from castlevanias
the original mega man is still my favorite in the series, because mastering it feels like a truly monumental feat.

Those ice cubes in Megaman need every microsecond of your reaction speed. I can't play punch out as well without original hardware on crt, night and day difference.
Shadow of the Ninja looks like something you'd pick on on Itch for $1.99 today as nostalgia bait.
That little smeagol like creature at 1:04:16 looks just like Igor from Castlevania. Had to double check to see if Shadow of the Ninja was a Konami title 😅
Oh, man. Beverly Hills Cop 3 is actually my favorite.
I feel like Jeff's disdain for 16-bit versions of games that added more lore and slicker gameplay to their 8-bit predecessors is one of those "fundamental differences" in how we view videogames.
can someone make a compilation of every time Jeff says is it better than Dynowarz Destruction of Spondyl00s
Sadly I feel like kids don't stop getting sick as often only after the youngest reaches around 1st grade
Thank you so much Jeff.❤❤❤
It's kind of wild how much Gremlins 2 gives me Binding of Isaac vibes
Finally someone brave enough to say the truth about Mega Man Soccer
First Mega Man I played was 4, so of course that’s the one I like. 😅
Shadow of the Ninja is getting a remake, so hopefully it polishes the game a fair amount.
wasn't there some way to do some kind of screenwipe magic in shadow of the ninja? i seem to remember there being some kind of input that let you do magic or something, but, its been 30 years so idk
So the mini game in BioShock is literally a copy of pipe dream. Interesting.
lots of delicious spicy hot takes in this one. keep 'em coming.
everyone else here is (rightfully) baffled by the Mega Man X opinions, but I came back here to figure out why the hell Gremlins 2 is ranked so low
I feel like this has made me whatever the Nintendo Science version of an anti-vaxxer is
Shadow of the Ninja has such a RAD soundtrack.
I don't care about any of the later ones but MM4 gets a bum rep. I know Pharaoh Man is stupid but there is also Skull Man DID YOU THINK ABOUT THAT? MM4 has some of the best level design in the series as well, IMO improving on 3. 3 gets... bad.
I see you, true believer. MM4 rules.
I think I played Pipe Dream when I was like five or six? All I know is it's the first memory I have of a game actively giving me anxiety
The fact that "I'm outta here!" is not on the soundboard is a crime and a sin.
Anyone who thinks Mega Man 1 doesn't hold up has clearly never played Elecman's stage before beating Gutsman.
Gerstmann saying Low G Man The Low Gravity Man fucking kills me every time
It’s no Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus
Mega Man mentioned

Mega Man 4. Pharaoh Man. That was peak Mega Man.
The problem with Megaman 1 is the Yellow Devil boss. Never beat it.
NES Pipedream was a super addictive game. I remember getting really good at it back in college. I really need to play that again. Shadow of the ninja was actually quite good too, and I'm looking forward to the fairly recently announced remake coming out next year.
After seeing dig dug 2. Dig dug ds makes way more sense
I genuinely don't think I ever heard anyone hate Mega Man X.
He's wrong about it, even if it is his show
What is that song from Palamedes?
I think its a song from the 20's or something.
Imagine you just finished 8 robot masters and you jump into a level and find another robot but it's an empty husk then you see air man being dropped in and you think "you're not even from this game". That's mega man 3. The science ™️ will prove it's superior.

I really hope they put out NFL Blitz Legends on consoles and pc
Finish in one setting? So a rogue like.
The tragedy of this video is Jeff turning off the kids cd players. Way to miss out on some of the best music on the NES. It invalidates the whole ranking!
BTW, as someone who grew up on the c64 version, Jeff is wrong and the NES version is way better.
Fuck. Imagine laying this game in silence.
The sound effects in MM were best . They degraded after time with each with MM3.
Miss the old show. Evolve. ❤❤❤
Where’s Rad Racer at?
Dig dug II is ok
bold statement from jeff here but he's right about mega man x.
cause x2 is better 😎
only one mega man game lets you bully crystal snail
I played through the first 3 Mega Man games for the first time on the Wii Virtual Console. They all had their moments of bullshit, but I came away thinking that 1 was better than 3. If I were to replay them again, I would probably play 1 and 2 and skip 3, the low points of 3 are worse than anything in 1 imo.
I'm glad Jeff subscribes to the fact that you should always jump through the Megaman doors.
I subscribe to this philosphy until Mega Man 3 where I can slide through the door
This opinion i s the "insane" thing. This is a fun half-joke list. It's his opinion. Just deal. Lol
I think he is conflating his memories of the later games, I imagine if he played the first game again he would come around on it. I understand thinking mega man x is overrated, but it’s still absolutely a solid game
I couldn't stop laughing at his brutal take on Mega Man X
I like Beverly Hills Cop 3... it's not as good, but it's surprisingly still a good movie IMO.
I made this comment two minutes into the episode, right before you mentioned not leaving all the RPGs for last. Shame on me
Wow. That c64 maniac mansion music was def not better imo. I think you didn’t give it a truly fair shake. What you know bias. And mega man x rules, and mega man 2 is my favorite nes game.
DAMN.... Megaman X *defamation* up in here. It does kinda remind of what they did to Sonic when Sonic Adventure came out
Megaman X was a masterpiece.
