Thank you James for making such informative content like this. Your animation classes are a steal as well with how low you price them! I don't wanna sound too much like a bot advertisement account, but I love the way you teach and break things down. I highly urge anyone who is considering getting one or two of James' classes/recordings to buy them. I'm currently learning through his animation basics 2023 videos and this combined with the Animator's survival kit have taught me a lot in regard to animation. Please support content creator's like James so we can continue to learn from them!
That was such a simple yet highly effective explanation of foreshortening. Videos like this are so important, because young artists often focus on all the cool details and lighting of their favorite artists, but it’s these basic key fundamentals, that anyone can learn fairly easy with practice, that make up 90 percent of how effective their art will actually be, independent of style. If you can build a house, than painting and putting furniture in it will be the easy part. Thanks MDJ!
This was not only genuinely informative, but really inspiring. You introduced the study of perspective in a way that seems really fun, creative and playful rather than the usual academic and dry stuff. Thank you.
Studying MDJ’s guidance on advanced perspective then diving into Scott Robertson’s teachings improved everything I do ten fold. The, “here’s how you copy reference then change it enough to call it yours” channels are overwhelmingly popular. Sad so many people are spending years learning nothing…
I wish this guy had more reach because for me he is the most informative not just animator but also artist on TH-cam, and sadly TH-cam rewards quantity over quality which is really unfortunate
Not really, my immediate thought was the same. But I realized it's just a preference. And the people that make those videos get requested by fans to have their art "roasted". So it's all good...unless they didn't consent
@@SW-zb6bf i mean yeah but i think planning a video like this takes more effort, rather then just roasting art, which is what i think james was calling those videos, kind of lazy
glad that james is "indirectly" calling out some artists that are literally just doing content for the sake of content (which is fine but mid) instead making it educational and rich in quality like james and many other great but definitely smaller creators
Thank you for keeping up with sharing your knowledge for so long James, you don’t know how integral your videos were are and would be along my whole career in the art world, sincerely, thank you for inspiring and dispelling my doubts man!
The most 👏 straight to the point 👏 and mature👏 art help tutorial content creator on TH-cam. God so many of them are gimmicky and try too hard to be funny. This guy is who everyone should be watching.
4 real, so much good advice is mixed in with awful kid brained snappy crap that is hard to really internalize or really comprehend what they are trying to teach
I mean most of them are just TH-cam clowns - they make their living on reactionary bullsh*t. Can't be mad at them for just wanting to make a living. If someone is genuinely serious about art you watch things like Proko, New Master's Academy, etc.
Watched one of the guys from the beginning screenshots twice, his skills are actually impressive given how hard it must be to see what he’s painting with his head stuck so deep up his own ass
Mohammed agbadi used to do some great drawing content but now it's literally all commenting on TH-cam or social media drama. Obviously he's making money from it but it seems a shame that he doesn't post useful or interesting art content anymore, just this pointless dross.
Wow, wow, thank you so much, Modern Day James. You're probably one of the best art instructors on the internet that really is clear and concise while delivering amazing examples on what to do after aquring that knowledge. Thank you, much appreciation!
Thank you for this video! Since its so straight to the point and really easy to understand its great for people of all kinds of skill levels, be it a beginner or someone who just wants to refresh their knowledge. Truly appreciated!
oh! this is such a great shoutout for foreshortening usage! especially by separating it between simply overlap vs close proximity distortion i know there might be a big misconception that the scale "must be bigger" when the object closer to the camera while the thing is this scale change would only visible when the object is "close enough" to the camera otherwise this scale change wont much visible thanks for sharing this information! 😄
Art for clout vs art for learning. I want to learn art but not it be a career..yet.... I am subscribed here because you are art for learning. Knowing the difference will definitely grow one's skills as a new or intermediate artist. In 2020 I had to find the difference between the two to make my art skills grow from absolutely nothing to something. I actually got pretty decent after 1 year from nothing and posted a self portrait of my skills. There's a lot of flaws in it but I still stand by that. I haven't posted in a while because I need to build up another skill and find a higher paying job. I found that most art for learning YT channels were traditional artist and some digital artists. (Like yourself) Knowing this, knowing how to learn, and having unlimited time when I moved in with my parents during the pandemic; my art skills get better within a year. Now I am looking to bring my ideas to life. I have the skills to do it but top priority is getting a higher paying job. For now all I can do is watch the right YT videos. This channel is one of the right channel. in the sea of clout chasers.
Your channel is such a blessing. I liked the video, but the end felt a bit abrupt. I was looking forward to seeing the process. I can learn so much just by watching the process. It would be extremely helpful if you can add more of the rough figuring out part. Thank you
Sorry about that, the end was a bit abrupt! Tbh viewer retention is usually around two minutes so I try to wrap them up as quickly as possible. I'll make sure to include more of the process next time for the champs that sit through the whole thing!
This feels like a very great tutorial. During Covid i was able to gain a better understand for foreshortening through perspective studies but i still think i need practice. Especially with cyli like shapes so this is really helpful. 🎉
I dont got an issue with artist roast videos, they're typically in fun spirit, but man I wish youtube had more art instructors like you. Can't blame them tho, just people trying to make a living.
i pirated all your courses and they are a gem. when i make my first bucks ill become a patreon sub to you and all the good homies who taught me art. bless u
@@Eizengoldt Oh, seems like he did- likely for good reasons. if you want a quick summary, he was saying how he will post at a rythm that suits him ; doesn't want to please a youtube schedule or art community trends for a quick gain that go against his own values. He wants to focus on being an educator, not an entertainer. (despite the massive shift towards that at the time) simply, he dropped some real bars in the old intro too that caught a lot of us off guard

Yow that was uncalled for but really helpful for artists just starting out there!
What was uncalled for?
it's awesome how much the angle and scale can change how things look in drawing. i used to think the only way to make form was by adding shadows
