I started this video thinking "eh interesting" and came out of it wondering if I'd be smited for knowing this because I'm just not worthy of this knowledge
My god. I've been a professional illustrator for a decade but I feel like you've unlocked something new with the lighting bolt limbs. My gesture drawings have instantly improved and become more fluid.
+Clara Foisie You're not alone. I've met a few artists who excelled on their own and weren't getting anywhere with an instructor. I on the other hand had good instructors epic troll face win.
9 years ago....I remember watching these videos back in the day when I was playing around with art but never really committed any time to art. I finally did in 2020 and found out I enjoyed it. This has been very helpful!!!
M Povman I was just about to say the same thing! Like I don't feel pressured or feel like an idiot if I don't get it right (like I've had with art teachers), it's just, "Thats OK. Try again." I'm so relaxed when I'm drawing along to the tutorials. He's the new Bob Ross
It's always cool when you do something, then you find out "Oh, professionals do this too... cool! I feel more professional now." Good Tip! Helps me all the time with foreshortening! Keep it up!
It's....it's all so simple now! You don't understand. Foreshortening was the bane of my existance, I couldn't do ANYTHING involving any sort of perspective outside of eye level. And I tried everything, I just couldn't grasp it without a photo reference and, as a comic artist, there's not too many exact photo references for things like dragons or talking mongeese running away from ghosts. Now I have the cover I want, and it's all thanks to you! It's beautiful! I love you!
Omg same honestly I find it satisfying how quickly he draws that as well as jealous he can draw a better person in 5 secs while I take 30mins for something that's ok lol
I was always the top of all my art classes, and when I wanted to do something trickier, ie. fore-shortening, I was always shit outta luck. My teachers would always tell me to either just reposition something("You'll learn that next year/in college/etc..."...which I never did), or to just try something else. It was infuriating. And at 27 years old, with YEARS of experience, FINALLY I have my answers!!!! Seriously, why can't art teachers be like you...?
This is such an elegant and simple way of explaining foreshortening. So many books devoted entirely to this topic take hundreds of pages to explain what you just did in about 16 minutes. well done.
i was lost, alone and afraid and then the magnificence of the springy spring illuminated the true path with it's holy radiance and i was born upon a sea of curly devil horns that i can draw now, to a world born anew, a world of perspective based possibilities, a world... of wonder
I saw the Pinterest post, then leave the app and the second I take a look at TH-cam I see this. I was like "well... I'm happy that you recommended me, but how the hell did ya know I was interested?"
i watched this video YEARS ago and it came back to my recommended and im rewatching it but i didnt even remember how many techniques i use regularly came from you, so thanks bro
The technique he's explaining, in coils, is actually called a "mesh". Meshes are 3D objects on a 2D surface that have the basic 3D wire-frame or skeleton of the object and yes, they help a LOT.
FINALLY!!!! A friend recommended this back in college and it helped IMMENSELY. I've been trying to find this video again for YEARS with no luck. I will probably never say this again but that you TH-cam algorithm!
I'm going to be honest, this entire video legit blew my mind. the technique sounds super interesting, but I was actually left gawking at the part where you just drew a gridnplane under the figure xD
That's really interesting. It's almost like there's a kind of "conservation of mass" happening where if a hand gets bigger the rest of the arm has to get smaller. This is exactly the sort of stuff I wish I'd had in my drawing classes. "Just practice" is of course essential, but it doesn't give guidance like this.
I think the reason this is so helpful is because the coiling creates almost perfect cross-contour lines that make the figure look much more convincing and thus easier for the mind to rotate as a 3d object instead of 2d.
This method is literally amazing and I cannot imagine how many artists it’s saved when it comes to perspective and foreshortening but when I go to try it out, I find out that I already struggle with drawing coils itself…. oh boy, this is gonna take a while isn’t it?
You know, in high school I think I discovered this technique by mistake but disregarded the 3d-like effect it gave. This was really important for me to see, as just seeing this technique explained and in action has really opened my eyes to it once again and how I can apply it to my own work.
This REALLY fucking works. I find it a bit hard to use on the torso, but perhaps it's just me being a total noob. But it really helps with the arms and legs. Also, I love how most of the comment section is people going apeshit about how this wizardry works.
I'm self taught and I have taken a few art classes to see what they are like and they teach none of the important stuff like this. Subscribed, you're videos are really thorough and I thought I had everything down but this video taught me some really useful stuff. The only thing I never really got was how big to make the object in the foreground in comparison to the objects more in the background, I always just eyeballed it.
Tyrone Lannister You are so right! I´m actually pretty shocked that I´ve learned much more for free and through cheap courses than in the artschools I attended.
People kept recommending this to watch, and I was kind of "Meh" about it. Drawing tutorials never seem to give you much. They just sort of go, "Here's what I do, now you do it." And never really explain HOW. They never explain how to think or what to watch out for so you don't absorb anything. This, however, was flipping amazing and I can't wait to try it! I've always felt like I've sucked at foreshortening and as a result I've fallen into the habit of drawing mundane poses so I wouldn't have to worry about it, because all I ever was otherwise was frustrated. This video just rocks. Bless you :3 Subscribed.
