  • So we had a bad day, possibly the worst day with my Cane Corso puppy. I let a perfect storm of excuses combine to make me a bad dog trainer which showed itself in a bad morning! I wanted to share this with you and show you that we all have bad days, raising puppies has it's up and downs and hopefully this can give some of you the confidence to stick at it and not give up when times get tough!

Your channel is probably one of the highest quality dog behaviour channels that I found on TH-cam. It's quite a shame you have only a few thousand subscribers because you deserve much more. I love the honesty, I love the videos and to see that you're willing to share knowledge which others would try to squeeze every last penny out of it. Don't change man, always be this real because not so many people are these days. You have my respect sir, and I wish only the best to you and your family. Only a handful of people are like this these days, and you're one of them. You earned my respect. Hope you'll feel better and looking forward to each and every video to come.

    I needed this.
Had a terrible day with my boy (17wks) with crate training. Absolutely did my effin head in how bad it went. I was so wound up myself and I’m trying to calm an anxious pup!?

I’m a trainer of service and personal protection dogs. I’ve trained Dobermans, Bullmastiffs and Boxers and I find, for puppies, physical and mental exercise like hide n seek with their toys or treats before training make a huge difference. If you’re going through a busy stressful morning with kids etc I would leave your fur baby at home so by the time you get back your headspace will be clearer.
You’re doing an awesome job sometimes we don’t give ourselves enough credit and you should! Thanks for sharing looking forward to your next video!

I appreciate this video a lot. It’s nice to know that professionals deal with frustration when there is disobedience, especially in dogs that have been well trained in a certain behavior and choose to be defiant. For some reason we never see that part in media. TYFS!

    Hi Will. New fan here.
I'm a lifelong dog owner (50 years) 2 year dog trainer. I got a German Shepherd 2 years ago and decided to try and train this dog to a higher level than the basic sits and stays of all my previous dogs.
I took to TH-cam and read a few books to learn how to train my dog.
I quickly leaned towards a couple of trainers, you being one of them. I am so grateful to you for the absolutely immense amount of free knowledge that you have given me. My dog is amazing. A work in progress, I'm not a professional but super happy with our progress.
    Thank you 💪🐶♥️

Every Corso owner will run into some frustration at some point. Lol Some will experience it more than others just depends on the personality of the dog. Especially those 1-3yrs when they will try to push boundaries. Even as pups they do but when they get older they start to learn what they can get away with because they are bigger.

12 weeks is the time, EVERYTIME, that I start asking myself, “WHAT have I done?” The good news is it always passes! It’s all part of the bonding process. ❤️❤️❤️
On the crying...have you heard of misophonia? It’s real! Look it up! Crying, screaming, chewing, paper crinkling, leaf blowers...are all some of the things that can set it off. I KNOW you have it by the way you get stressed out even talking about that puppy whining. I know I have it, by how stressed out I get by hearing you describe it! 🤣🤣🤣

So true about how our negative energy can affect a pup! Just a couple of hours before I watched this, I got a warning on my phone that a dangerous storm was coming. I quickly took out my older dog to do her business before the rain came - they both hate going out in the rain. She went fine; then took out the pup. Normally he goes really quick but because the wind was really picking up and it started to rain I started to panic and it was in my voice - he refused to go out. He probably thought something really scary is happening for mom to be so scared - I'm not going out there! :-). An hour later the wind died down and the rain was minimal - he still was petrified to go out!! I had to show him everything was ok now and we'll go out together. Lol!

Thank you Will. I'm going through what you experienced through this video right now.
Our English Mastiff puppy just turned 2 yrs old on Dec 15th and we recused her from a kennel. She had been in the kennel since she was 3 or 4 months old and was just neglected. No training, loving, or socializing with other dogs or people.
She is very shy and gets scared very easily when she sees or hears things she's not familiar with. In fact, she has caused me to fall down 3 times and the last time was on Dec 18th, which resulted with a huge goose egg on my forehead and a black and blue eye. I'm so lucky the sunglasses took the hit and not my eye.
I'm so glad you posted this video b/c now I can see I just need to keep trying to train our puppy and get the correct tools, e.g., a prong collar to stop the bolting away when she gets scared.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your encouragement to keep going forward and loving our beautiful little girl. Take care. Katherine

Thank you for this message! I've had dogs most of my life and as a kid even trained them in 4-H. But ... my new puppy! She found my Kryptonite - reactive Frenchie screaming. I didn't know a dog could MAKE this noise. I usually have an abundance of patience, but with her I often feeel so guilty and defeated. I'll hold this story in mind as we move forward. Thank you 🙏

I have an 11-month-old Giant Schnauzer puppy. We have our good days and bad. Some days, our walks and training times are amazing. I really feel like we're making headway and she's the "perfect" puppy. LoL... and then there are the days, I come home so frustrated, I'm in tears. So, I have a 2 month old pitbull puppy and I had the almost exact same experience today. With all the people coming and yelling my puppy's name from all directions, giving wrong commands and driving me and the puppy crazy, and as I came home absolutely frustrated and panicked, this video popped up and calmed me down, so I wanted to say thank you, I really appreciate your channel and your honesty, you seem like a very nice person with much love and appreciation for the relationship between a dog and it's owner and have you manage to pass all this knowledge to us in a very calm way. I couldn't put in the time to train her that due needed due to my full time job so the rescue relocated her within the rescue then she got adopted by a couple who took her to training. I have always felt that I gave up on her. She was messing with my big female who put up with her for a while and was as patient as she could be and I didn't want her to get to a point sh had no more patients. I really connected with your story. It is reassuring to know that even the best trainers are human too. I have always loved working with dogs but always thought I won't know what to do in that situation I don't have a solution to every behavior like all the professional trainers I have watched so this stops me fro doing what I would love to do as my career where I will never work a day in myife.
    Thank you Will.

Oh, I'm sooooo glad you did that! Thank you! Like you said, almost everyone on TH-cam, Fb and Insta, just show the perfect product and it seem like a dreamland. Not fun for ordinary people with ordinary problems. So thanks for beeing human, and showing it! Greetings from Sweden

I found this today after a bad day yesterday. You have given me hope. We got 2 puppies about 6 or 7 months ago. And they are beating me down.We had a horrible time outdoors trying to run some energy off. I was ready to give one or both up , but have changed my mind after this beautiful rant. Thank you

Thank you! This is the best and most honest dog training video I have ever seen. I have been going through this with an Italian Greyhound puppy and somedays the whining just makes me lose it and I feel like such a failure. He whines about everything and since hitting adolescence he is having fits in his crate, so now I'm training for seperation anxiety although it seems like some of his behavior is just pitching a fit for not getting his way. And alot of the trainers I watch say never punish your dog. Well he would have never been potty trained if I hadn't started scolding him for eliminating in the house. When I'm trying to train in public and everyone screws it up, I get frustrated. People need to get a clue that when you ask a dog to sit he doesn't get the treat if he stands back up, how hard is that to comprehend? Now I see all these things are just part of the process. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I am so glad I have seen this. I have been to puppy classes today and my pup was an absolute nightmare! When I train her at home and out and about she is amazing. She is very obedient and well behaved.
As soon as she got into, the room she was an absolute terror. Everyone else’s pup was quiet and well behaved and there was a group of trainers criticising some how I was holding her lead (taught by will himself) then I was doing this wrong, ( again tips I had picked up from will and another great trainer) and that wrong my pup was misbehaving, I was getting stressed and just wanted to leave and felt like crying!
I have been going for 3 weeks now and get absolutely nothing from the course, she is far better behaved following my training (tips from will). It’s last lesson next week and think I might skip it!
But it’s nice to know that even an experienced dog trainer struggles too! I felt like a failure and a bad dog owner!😢 Thank you, this has really helped today.

This video was really helpful. Thank you so much for your honesty!! I needed this video because I too am training a Corso pup and he is so amazing but some days have been really hard.. I too picked a more submissive pup and I wasn’t aware of how much separation anxiety was going to effect me. So, thank you for the reminder that I have to stay calm in order for him to understand what I am trying to teach him

This made me smile and even giggle a bit because I have been on that roller coaster sometimes several times in a day! I have an 8 month old Aussie and some days are just frustrating! How can the same dog be stellar then defiant then loving then calm, then bossy...all in a matter of an afternoon?! I have a similar trigger (crying/whining and bossy barking set me off) and it sends me into an almost panic mode in my need to get it to stop. It is so hard to step back particularly when you are not at home. It helps to know I am not alone 1) in feeling like this, 2) in having days like this and 3) in struggling to turn it to rights. Thank you for your honesty - makes me want to get out there and try again!

THIS VIDEO. My Husband and I have a drive coming up in a couple of hours and WHAT will we be listening to on the drive? THIS VIDEO. I have laughed out loud a few times, only 9 minutes in because this is exactly what we are going through with not just a 19 week old Cane Corso female puppy, but also with 10, 8, 6, 3 year olds, as well as an 11 yr old Pomimo and a 5 yr old Cane Corso. I totally understand where you are coming from and what you're going through. The frustration and sometimes even anger is palpable so it's so refreshing to know that we are not alone in this and even a professional canine behaviorist deals with real life issues and has bad days. My Husband has to hear this because he has been over the new puppy for weeks now lol. 2 nights ago we were exhausted, had just been in the hospital for Rabies shots with our 6 yr old who was attacked by a stray cat, we got everybody in bed and turned in ourselves. Next thing is we started smelling dog diarrhea THROUGH OUR CLOSED DOOR, so the Husband goes out to discover Gracie Girl had gone massive diarrhea upstairs on the balcony carpet (which we had just had professionally cleaned last weekend), AND she was sitting on her dog bed EATING A CHRISTMAS PRESENT from under the tree, which the Husband had just wrapped and placed. It was a new phone...so yeah, I am the one trying to keep her in the home and do the majority of the training so I am thankful for THIS VIDEO. Thanks Will for being so forthcoming, with the good, bad and ugly! We learned several things after that night. Namely, she has got to sleep in her crate and is still not ready to be left out. She had done beautifully for 19 weeks and then BAM. So yeah, lessons learned and thanks again for this candid video. Merry Christmas to your family❤

Loving watching your videos. So useful and easy to understand. Totally love this though - as an owner of loads of dogs over the years, and a parent, I see how easy you get results, and then the owners are having a go - and they are doing so well. Just needed a tune up...but also thinking in the back of my mind that it is easy sometimes to make these things happen, until life steps it up and you are tired, busy, s9 9ver everyone, and that's when it's hard. So nice for you to post this so we can all relate.

You are a hero for sharing this. Not many trainers and/or behaviorists would. We all struggle at different levels. By being open and honest about your feelings, behaviors and triggers. You’ve saved many dogs from being misguided or even worse, hurt. Thank you for teaching us. Thank you for sharing both your strengths and weaknesses. You made this dog owner and amateur trainer a better person. That means you’ve helped others as well. That’s why you are a hero.

I have a 4 months old puppy. I had no idea what I was getting myself into and I had no idea how explosive my temper can be until she came into my life. She is smart and an absolute joy but training is hard, specially because every session is also an exercise in patience for me, which doesn't come easy. I watch many videos with tips and I usually end up in tears because I'm left with these feeling of inadequacy since most videos edition make it look so easy and trainers seem to be so chill and relax.
Thank you for sharing. I know it's being 2y since but today I feel a bit better about myself and my future with Zana.

I’ve already commented, but u touched on something that I think we all could have you discuss more in depth, and that is how to deal with people who seem to sabotage all the hard work I do with training my pup. Unfortunately my husband is one who thinks everything I’m trying to change with the pup is soooo cute! Can’t get him to be consistent with me and the training. Very frustrating!! Maybe some pointers on how to deal with these people. Thank you peace ✌️

I am from Australia and I have a difficult 4 and a half year old female Irish Wolfhound x Bull Mastiff that I have been working with. I’m getting better and so is she but we still have days where I wonder if I’m doing things wrong. She has some dog to dog aggression issues but is so lovely with people and so gentle with my grandchildren. She is worth putting the effort in. If I followed the philosophy of some people on TH-cam who only show their success then I would have given up by now. I absolutely love your philosophy and your values and I just wanted to say thank you for being so honest.
I do honestly get frustrated with other trainers who often have some good theories but their videos are all about how good they are and they never show the full story. If more were as honest as you are then maybe less dogs would get surrendered.
    Keep up the fantastic videos

We all have those days mate trust me, even more so at this time of the year when everything gets crazier for 2 weeks. I have two young autistic kids, two large dogs (who tbf are no problem at all now both adult) and also I work from home like yourself and so deal with all school/medical appointments on top of that.... some days its really easy to become overwhemed by everything. Like you say the best thing to do in that case is scrap any plans you had and take the time to chill and wind yourself down. Once calm again anything thrown at you is always easier to deal with :-)
